So far alive, so far.
Characters: Tatum Donnelly & Aune Walkky
Setting: Room 304, Sonnier
Rating: PG-13 probably
Summary: Roommates doing roommat-y things.

Technicalities are always so very, well. Technical.
Technically the students of CCI had moved in earlier this week, and technically that would mean that most (or at least a few) would have their belongings unpacked. Technically, as it was the first day of school, the students might still be unpacking, reading, for those who wanted to get ahead on homework, or other activities suitable to their ages. But not Bekka, oh no. Instead she was ignoring her unpacked bags, the music from the room next door and even by some odd chance, her homework for favor of her notebook and the stats that needed to be adjusted for next school year. All she needed to find was her calculator, which is probably why clothes, boxes, and towels were tossed onto Tatum's unsuspecting bed.

Tatum had been across the hall for a few minutes, as well as up to the next level of the dorms. Checking in on her sister up there for a moment, she had peeked in on Rowan and Frankie for a few minutes as well, before finally accepting her fate and returning to her own room. She couldn't start hiding with her friends just yet, it was still too early in the year. She knew she needed to at least open up her trunks and boxes before and put her things into proper order before she went and made a make-shift escape into her girlfriend's room for the rest of the semester.

She had gotten some unpacking done earlier in the week, but she had other things to take out still, and although she had been working slowly at it, she was hoping it would just come along faster. Unpacking every year, and then packing up at the end, was grueling. At least they didn't have to pack their beds, though.

When she pushed open the door to her room, she immediately took notice of the pile of things loaded onto her bed, trying not to show any visible dismay. It wouldn't be any good to piss Bekka off this early in a semester. Without a word, Tatum moved over to the foot of her bed, where she still had several boxes of video games and electronics to set up. She crouched to the nearest, pulling it open, and taking a pile of Nintendo 64 games carefully from within.

She moved to her computer desk area, where she had also set up a small TV on the other end of the surface. She placed the games in a neat stack beside the TV, and then went back to the box, fetching the console to go with them, then back again for Wii games, followed by that console as well.

It was going to be boring work, but so long as she didn't try Bekka's patience, it might not be so bad.

Bekka, for the most part, ignored her roommate's entrance and her own unpacking mission. She had more important things to worry about, and if all went well, they might even successfully ignore each other's existence for as long as possible. It wasn't that she overly disliked Tatum, just that she saw little reason for their association. Stupid school and their stupid rooming system. She might as well have been roomed with a cactus for all she cared. All that mattered was her book.

To most, the next scene might have proven comical, for in a little longer than a flash, Bekka was hidden mostly under her bed, with only her sneakers poking out. Finally, with her head still hidden Bekka called out. "Tatum- black book, lots of math in it. Have you seen it?"

Tatum had been rather engrossed in straightening out a stack of Super Nintendo cartridges when Bekka caught her attention. She turned slightly, enough to just see the sneakers hanging from under the edge of the bed. She blinked a little, instinctively biting on her lower lip, trying not to laugh just a little at the sight. She wasn't sure how Bekka took to being laughed at.

"Uhm, I haven't seen it, not since.. you last had it, anyway, which was.. I mean, I have seen it, but not today.. or uhm, right now," she stammered, mentally kicking herself the entire time, feeling like a babbling moron. "Sorry," she quickly added.

"Yeah. Alright." Bekka rolled her eyes, this was a bit ridiculous and having an idiot for a roommate wasn't helping the situation much. She started to do her best impression of a backwards military crawl to try and make her way out from under the bed. At least the one good thing about it being so early in the year was that under her bed was still very little, no bugs, dust or wayward spells. She did however, bump her head on the way out and tried to sit up, cursing as she rubbed the spot on the back of her head.

It was here that she saw the rather retro games Tatum had out, giving them an inquisitive eye she had to ask, "Aren't those older than you?"

Tatum had been in the process of returning her full attention to the games, when Bekka mentioned them. She blinked a little, looking at the various cases and cartridges she had out, and then looking at the ones in the boxes, still waiting to be unpacked. "Some of them are," she finally replied, glancing at Bekka quickly, and then away again with equal speed.

"Mostly just the original NES games, most of them are from the eighties, and I have an Atari at home.. and an original Gameboy somewhere in my desk drawer. That's pretty old," she explained, reaching up to tuck some hair nervously behind her left ear. "Uhm, why though?"

Bekka's face was deadpan, she neither smiled nor frowned, for the most part this conversation was fruitless, and worst off. It was distracting her from the search for her book. "Because, it seems ridiculous to waste your space with those." She stood up then, lifting her mattress for the off chance it was there.

"Let me guess, putting it on the bookshelf instead of actual books?"

Tatum watched Bekka again, watched her pull up the mattress, frowning a little, vaguely hoping her bed wasn't next. "Some of them, I guess, like.. with actual books, I own actual books," the other girl replied quietly, just slightly downtrodden. She had a feeling that regardless of what she had to say, Bekka wouldn't deem it as a proper answer.

"I own books," she murmured again, as if that confirmed it, before she reached for something else from her box, placing it up onto a bedside shelf.

"Do you want a trophy or something for it?" Asked Bekka sarcastically. Clearly they weren't going to be a pair that stayed up all night giggling or painting each others toenails or whatever the fuck it is normal girls do. Heck, Bekka wasn't even so sure she'd be able to get a real conversation out of her roommate until mid-term, and only if she was lucky until then. She stood and spun on the spot a little, hoping half-halfheartedly that the book would just jump up this way. When she spoke again, she was a little bit (only a little bit) frustrated.

"Look while you're going through your congressional library, keep an eye open for it. Alright? I'm fucked if I can't edit it before the first game."

"I'll keep looking," Tatum replied quickly, nodding her head. When she thought Bekka had finished addressing her, she returned to the games, feeling significantly less enthusiastic about putting out her collection now. She almost wanted to go and get back to Frankie's room already. Bekka made a good point; it was sort of a dumb thing to have laying around everywhere, and Bekka wasn't the only one who thought so.

When she had finished with the current box finally, she moved it aside with another empty one, before moving to open another one up. She glanced at Bekka again, and then back down to the box. "I can like, uhm.. go, or whatever, if you need room to look around."

"Go, stay. I don't really care." Bekka replied absently. She had dedicated her attention to another box of her own that had once been stowed away in the closet. She waved a hand dismissively. "Go do whatever it is you people do. I'm good."

Honestly, she didn't exactly care at this point. Tatum had proved fruitless in her notebook search, and if she left it at home, or in her father's car then that would be a whole different adventure to retrieve it. If that was so, then Bekka was assured that her roommate would be just as useful there as here.

Tatum frowned a little at the response, though she didn't say anything immediately. She turned her back, attention on her shelf again, wiping a bit of dust away and then adjusting the items piled upon it. She worked out a delicate balance for most of her belongings, and with any many games and things as she had hanging around, it tended to be a series of precarious balanced piles.

"What do you mean you people?" she asked finally, without looking back.

The question caused Bekka to glance up at her roommate, really? Did the girl not know? So with a sigh she straightened herself up more proper and adjusted the unwelcome bangs from her forehead.

"You know, 'you people'. People like you and your little friends." Wasn't that clear enough?
porcelinaofvast From: [info]porcelinaofvast Date: September 13th, 2010 06:30 pm (UTC) (Link)
"Oh," Tatum replied softly, feeling instantly stupider. She turned her head a bit, focusing on unpacking again, her hands shaking just a bit. "I thought you meant gay-- ... err, y'know, something else," she explained, trailing off.
studiesallnight From: [info]studiesallnight Date: September 13th, 2010 07:31 pm (UTC) (Link)
"I didn't realize that was such an issue for you Tatum." She drawled slightly, it wasn't as if it was a great surprise about her roommate's preference, after all, it wasn't like this was the first time they'd ever spent time around each other. "I'll be sure to stop bringing home all the men from campus."

She went back to searching, this time repacking what had been scattered around the foot of her bed, presumably this might discover the hidden book. "Do lesbos have different kinds of fun than us squares?"

"I didn't even mean-- whatever, forget it," Tatum began to protest, trailing off more softly toward the end. Her hand tensed on the book she was holding, as she slid it into it's place on the second shelf up. She glanced back at Bekka as the other girl continued to speak, although she faced her books again before she bothered to reply.

"Just forget it, please? We're not even-- we're.. nevermind."
