Fragile Glass, Hard Diamond
It's like a whole new life, Melinda thinks to herself, looking out the window of the cab as it pulls up to 1407 Graymalkin Lane. Across the ocean from her family, her old life, her life of ignoring the truth of who she was... and a chance to repair some of the damage she has done.

Her parents had a hard time hearing what had happened. Her brother had listened... and told her that he loved and supported her, but had no idea how to help her beyond that. Her mother had cried. Her father had just been angry... not at her, but at the situation. And late at night, she had heard him sobbing in their bedroom. They all told her that they didn't blame her for what she'd done.

But that didn't matter. They might not blame her, but... they didn't know. They didn't know what it felt like to kill people... and worse, to remember enjoying killing.

She had to come. She had to try to wash this stain on her soul clean... even if she didn't think she ever could.

She gathers her bags from the cab's trunk and heads for the front door. A short time later, a student guide helps point out her room, and opens her door for her, letting her in.

Melinda steps into the room, bags loading her down.

The Graymalkin address was remarkably like the Massachusetts school in Christina's mind and as she stood in the corner of the room she'd been assigned to the young woman found herself reconsidering. Perhaps it had been a rash decision--or a series of them--to come here, to embrace her abilities and apply them into something larger than herself. She'd been trying to avoid following in Emma's designer shoe clad footsteps and yet...

...it would seem that there would eventually be a codename, a uniform, and some ass-kicking in her future.

"Awesome," Chris grumbled to herself as her cell phone rang again and again she sent it straight to voicemail. She didn't even bother to look at the caller ID. It was her mother. It was always her mother. She frowned, though as she sat the phone down on the nightstand and the door creaked open, another girl crossing the threshold.

"They weren't kidding when they said I'd have a roommate soon. Need some help?"

Melinda looks at the girl already in the room. "Um... hi! I... guess you're my roommate?"

I didn't know I'd have a roommate, she thinks to herself. Does... she know what I did?

"Where... should I put this down?" she asks. "I don't want to take any of your space..."

Does...she know what I did?

Chris blinked a few times as the thought presented itself. It was hard to miss, even though she wasn't openly reading. How bad could it be, whatever it was? Please let this new person not be all preoccupied with drama.

"I've got the right side of the room. I just got here myself so it's not like you'd be taking much of my space. I think it's generally still up for grabs."

"Name's Chris. By the way."

"Melinda," Melinda says, dropping her bags on the bed on the left side. "Melinda Dyars." She looks over to see if there was any spark of recognition in Chris's eyes at the dropping of her name, covering that investigation by offering her hand to shake.

"Christina Frost. If we're going with last names." She extended her hand and closed her fingers around the one offered, a firm and solid shake.

"Has anyone told you that you seem a little expectant of judgment?" Chris picked up one of Melinda's bags and put it at the end of her bed. "I'm not intentionally being nosy but it's just radiating off of you. Rather loudly, actually."

She tapped her temple.

"Light telepathy."

Melinda freezes. Oh, bollocks. She knows.

Images of blood, pain, and murder begin to play through Melinda's mind. Remembering the torture and mayhem she caused... remembering the laughter and enjoyment.

And behind it all... two faces. Mr. Sinister and Apocalypse. The two men responsible for it all.

The images hit Chris with the force of a Mack truck, so much so that she took a step back. Her eyes widened.

"Oh...shit."

The faces. She recognized them and as she recognized them she felt a surge of fear. It seemed to ride the wave of the other images, conflicted and confused but she knew, fleetingly, that it wasn't coming from Melinda.

Her own hand suddenly felt nothing at all. That's where the fear was from and in an instant the coldness and the numb began to spread, glittering and gleaming outwardly for as nothing as it was inside. Diamond.

"Well. Fuck."

"CALM DOWN."

Chris almost wished she could put anger behind her words just because the idea of a verbal slap to the nearly hysterical girl's face was satisfying. As it was, though, her words were flat.

"Your little...emotional mental display did this. In other words the more you freakout the longer I'm stuck like this. So...take a xanax or something. Otherwise someone's going to end up confusing me for an engagement ring and then I'll be exceptionally pissed. This is one of my other quirks."

Melinda takes a deep breath. "I... thought I turned you into glass. I didn't think I could do that."

Calm down, girl. Calm down.

"I'm sorry. I didn't... I..."

Her brain sticks, unsure even as to what has really just happened here, much less how she can try to make amends.

Good work, Melinda. You're here to try to fix things, and the first thing you do is mess up your roommate.

"No, my mother's genetic code turned me to compressed carbon because of your freakout. Just calm down and things will be fine. It wears off, I go back to being a normal freak and all is fine just...calm the hell down. I will hit you if I have to."

Chris sat down at the edge of her bed.

"You don't cope well at all, do you? Let me clear somethings up for you: I don't really care what you did. I care more about what you DO now."

Melinda steps forward, anger starting to flare.

"Excuse me," Melinda states. "First of all, no, I don't cope well with being kidnapped and mind-raped for seven months, but at least I keep it inside. So I'm sorry if you were poking your brain into mine, but that's not my fault!"

"You keep it inside? I don't think there's even a cheap charlatan psychic with fake ESP who could miss that you have Issues. By the way, I hear they have counseling for that. I really am going to have to render you unconscious aren't I if I have any prayer of having skin and bones again? Look, you aren't keeping it inside. You're broadcasting, even if you don't realize it. You have no control over your thoughts which makes you a continued victim of what was done to you. The sooner you harness control of your thoughts, the sooner you can heal and regain control, all of that psychobabble. Right now, you're just letting potential enemies know exactly where your weaknesses are."

Chris stopped for a moment.

"On second thought, keep being distressed. In the event of disturbance I can use you as a mental shield to keep my ass safe."

It crossed Chris' mind that compassion might be a good emotion at the moment. Too bad she couldn't feel it. Or anything.

Oh, this roommate situation is NOT going to work.

"Yeah, you have fun being a diamond," Melinda declares. She turns and storms out of the room. She's going to find someone to fix this immediately.

"More room for me then. Which is excellent since I have lots of shoes."

Chris shrugged and lay down on her bed and waited for the curse to run its course.

Lucas hasn't heard about just how badly the roommate situation went, of course, but he knew about the new student moving in, and wanted to check on Melinda anyway. With so much of the staff still recovering and on short hours, and him being the only healer in the place, he's been plenty busy helping out.

He heads down the hallway of the girls wing, not quite sure what to expect.

The diamond form was being stubborn this time. Melinda must have been having string after string of freakouts because only now, over half an hour after she'd first turned to stone, was the form fading away. Her arms were still diamond, though. Frustrating. But there was nothing she could do about it and it was getting boring just laying on the bed in the room waiting for Little Miss Issues to come back so she got up, slipped on some shoes and ventured out of the room.

To her surprise there was another person walking down the hall. Someone she hadn't heard coming. That was...different.

"Hey."

"Roommate situations are no fun." he replies non-committally, not wanting to get in the middle of that unless someone asks for mediation. "Powers that you have trouble controlling? What do you need to turn them back? Oh, and sorry... I'm Lucas Moonstar."

Chris shrugged.

"Situations happen. She'll either calm down or she won't. I believe she's lobbying for a new roommate as we speak." Sitting down on the bed, she pulls her feet under her. "Time. It's the only thing that I know of that turns me back to normal. You missed it; a few minutes ago I was solid diamond. I blame my mother.

"It's nice to meet you, Lucas. Seems like it's been a bit chaotic about here..."

He meanders in fully. "Time will tell, though right now, its a little chaotic. Hopefully you two can work it out. And there's plenty of time, so far as I know. And the chaos usually settles sooner or later."

"That's good, else I'll be in diamond mode permanently and while I'm sure it has benefit I much prefer my normal self." She wiggles her fingers as one hand returns to normal, warm pink flesh starting to spread up her arm.

"You very nearly snuck up on me. You're the first person I've encountered since getting here that I couldn't hear coming." She taps her temple. "Blissful peace and quiet."

He sits down on the bed a couple feet away, when she seems comfortable enough with him hanging out here.

"Oh, a telepath? We'll probably be in a lot of classes together. I'm a dreampath, as far as mutant powers go. Not as much regular utility, but it keeps most telepaths out of my mind, anyway."

"I prefer to identify as a technopath. The telepathy is just another unfortunate side effect of being Emma Frost's daughter as far as I am concerned but everyone insists on making a big deal out of it. I hate to break it to them, but I'm never going to have her skill and I've willfully avoided dealing with it most of my life. I'd much rather get into the nerve center of gadgets anyway.

"What exactly does a dreampath do?"

"There's nothing wrong with not wanting to do much with your powers other than controlling them. As for what my powers can do... astral projection, better than most psychics in the astral and I can tap into the local unconscious for things like speaking whatever the local language is. That's about it with awake people. When someone is asleep, I can enter their dreams, interact with their subconscious, help stop nightmares, manipulate the dream to help them dream about whatever they want, or undo psychic damage, things like that. Its not necessarily all that useful a lot of the time, especially since some people are pretty private about their dreams. I try and help out where I can though."

He nods. "I've been working with Melinda. I did most of the deprogramming of the people who were brainwashed. My powers are useful, just only in very specific situations. But they don't define me. I'm just glad to be able to help. I'm also still learning some about them. At home I had a lot more chance to study theology and magic, now I'm kind of working on balancing things out a little. Other than the roommate situation, how are you settling in?"

[info]whosperfectnow

"Eh. I'm settling. I still don't know exactly what I'm doing here. I swore to myself that I would avoid all of this and make a way on my own away from this and yet here I am."

"I will, Lucas. Thank you. I have to admit I didn't quite know what to expect from people when I showed up here. So far I am mostly surprised and in a good way." Chris smiles and then groans as her cell starts ringing. "I should take this. It's my mother and she's not going to stop with the calling until I answer. It was nice to meet you."
