Meeting of the McCoys
More and more Friedrich had grown disenfranchised with his family's methods of pushing the mutant agenda.  While Friedrich was hardly squeamish, in fact violence had little affect on him, but said action should serve a higher reason for the pursuit of mutant survival. While he wasn't sure he could say he loved his brother, Nicholas, he had a deep respect for him. The fact of the matter was, his habit of killing human sympathizers along with "wannabe-human" mutants seemed more petty than for any higher purpose. While Friedrich shared his brother's contempt for said individuals, in the end his continued crusade was not feasible.

His father was even more dissappointing. While Nicholas on some level may feel he's helping the mutant cause, Friedrich did not get the same impression from his father, no matter what he personally claimed. After long observation Friedrich came to the conclusion that his father was, in the end, a sadistic lunatic. He respected the man's brilliance, but his pattern of behavior increasingly confirmed the truth to Friedrich. The Dark Beast didn't care a wit about his people. To him "the cause" was simply a pretext to perform all manner of grotesque experiments to push the mutant genome. Not to help his people, but for his own curiosity and sick enjoyment. Friedrich's own modified mutations were proof of that. Granted Friedrich had intiated his own "inhuman" experiments, but at least they served a higher purpose.

Then one day, Friedrich believed enough was enough. He would never be able to properly aid his people within the confines of his home or with the limited doctrine of Gene Nation. No, he needed a new perspective. While leaving the only home he knew was difficult, it had to be done. So one day, with a disguise he'd been preparing to cover his animal-like legs and claws, Friedrich set out to find someone who could properly see to it his efforts were truly working for mutant benefit. Though in truth, he had little idea of where to go, hence his search. He had a few options, but wasn't sure which would be the most feasible.

Unable to make a solid decision without more information, Friedrich decided a visit to the library would be prudent. Perhaps there would be articles and studies he could utilize. He walked a little awkwardly, he wasn't used to walking like the average human, into the building. He made doubly sure nothing was visible before entering.

The library at Xavier's was excellent, but lacked the special collections, in various languages and editions, of the New York Public Library. Which was why Sylvie came here. She had found a biology text in Catalan -- Catalan! Wasn't that awesome? She'd even sat herself up on her lower hands to reach it, though she didn't leave her wheelchair.

Friedrich did his best to remain casual as he searched for the books he was looking for. He had a couple leads. Some of the names were considered hacks by their "legitimate" scientific peers, but Friedrich saw traces of brilliance in their theories. In particular there was a mention of a Yusef Razakah, an Uyghur geneticist out of China who had some interesting theories regarding mutant evolution. However getting information regarding his work was difficult. China wasn't too keen on sharing what it's learned regarding mutants with the West, though Friedrich had it on good authority that some of the man's early works successfully made it abroad. Of course the problem was that according to rumor, it was written in Uyghur. So even if he found it, good luck reading it.

He turned the corner, only catching a vague glimpse that there was a person there.

"Pardon me, Miss," he said ahead of time so as not to startle the person already there.

Sylvie sits back in her chair a bit, to be polite and not worry someone with 'what the heck is going on under that skirt?'

"No problem, but I've already taken the Catalan stuff." She grinned. "I know that's what everyone's after.

"Heh, while I'm seeking out something a little obscure, that would not be one of them. Your acquisition is most secure where it is," he answered in his usual overly-explained way. He begins looking through the nearby books. He looks upward where he thought he caught a glimpse of her trying to lean up. "Were you attempting to reach a book on the higher shelves? I could retrieve it for you if you are so inclined."

"That's very thoughtful of you, but I managed to get a hold of it. What are you after? I know my way around this collection pretty well."

For a moment he pauses, knowing how weird the object of his search may make him look. Still, any time saved was valuable. "Dr. Yusef Razakah's "Adapting the Human Genome". It may be difficult to find considering it was never properly translated into English."

"Oh, but really, isn't any excuse to learn Uyghur a good excuse to learn Uyghur? They had to make up /new letters/ in multiple orthographies!"

For a moment Friedrich just stands there a little dumbfounded. "I..in truth I had planned to use a computer to translate it." Suddenly he felt a little sheepish.

"Well... that's a valid option, too. I'm just a little biased. Linguistics student. Anyway, Dr. Razakha's work is right over there" She gestures with her upper left hand.

"Oh, well, proper fluency in distinct languages, I can count on my fingers without taking off my socks, but I've specialized in dialects to the extent that, well, 15 different dialects of Spanish alone."

Friedrich raised an eyebrow. "That's very impressive. I read and speak some German, though I don't claim to do so well."

"It can be a rough language, so close to English, but with the inflections and the fact that a turnip is a 'she' and a little girl is an 'it' throwing one's mindset off initially."

She extended her upper right hand. "Sylvie."

Despite himself, he found himself really enjoying this girl's company. "Friedrich, but my friends call me Fred. I suppose you can, too." He smiled a little shyly, though he tries to catch himself before a hint of his fang can be shown.

"Ah, no wonder you've tried your hand at German. In a Scots-Irish-Puerto Rican family like mine, Spanish was a logical choice."

And there warning lights went off in Friedrich's head. He knew the surprise had to be on his face. He coughs to regain his composure. "Um..yes..well, perhaps I should go check this book out. Thank you for your assistance." In his haste he tripped a bit. He frantically covered his leg, but for a brief instant a hint of his animalisitc leg could be seen.

"Fred," Sylvie wheels herself over to him. Her lower hands hike up her skirt until her lower arms stick out from under it. "They're not a jumpy bunch here. They've never really minded me."

Well that pretty much confirmed it. Part of him was screaming at him to run from the place and damn the consequences of doing so. However, another part of him found himself staying, calmed by her genuinely kind words. He never heard such a tone before.

"It's..not that, necessarily," he stated reluctantly. "It's..who I am,..and who you are."

He sighs. There was no logic in doing what he did next. He didn't know why he admitted it. Maybe it was because he wanted a friend, a family member whe didn't have to fear and be paranoid about.

"It's because..my name is Friedrich..McCoy I guess you could say I'm your cousin."

"...Oh." Sylvie keeps all of her hands calmly where they can be seen. "Well, whatever you may have heard, Fred, I'm not in the habit of picking a fight with somebody just because there were some problems with their side of the family."
