Don't Shoot The Messenger
A small crowd of people arrives at the front door of the Brownstone. Two men in suits, one of much higher quality than the other, a trio of uniformed police officers, and a trio of unmarked security personnel with more expensive uniforms. The man in the cheaper suit stands closest to the door, taking out a paper from his coat pocket.

"Just remember, Mr Primm, we're allowing your and your staff's presence here as a courtesy. I tell you to clam up or leave, you do it."

"Of course, Detective. We're just happy to assist. One of your officers will accompany each member of my staff at all times, I assure you."

The detective grunts something and knocks.

Bea looks up before she even hears the knock. "I'll get it."

She presses the comm button as she walks. "Kelly, if I get arrested, try to stay calm around the children, okay?" Pause. Rephrase. "Calm and also not spilling blood unless in an emergency."

The detective will introduce himself politely when the door is answered. "Good afternoon, miss. I'm Detective Scratch. I have a warrant to search the premises for missing property belonging to the Leap Foundation. This is Mr Primm, a representative of their legal department. I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you to let us inside." He hands over the paperwork, which seems to all be in order.

While she makes no move to get rid of them, she makes no move to get out of the doorway either. "Got to admit, I'm terribly curious what they gave the judge as probable cause."

Primm is about to speak, but a blistering glare from the detective shuts him up.

"Surveillance records submitted by the Leap Foundation as evidence." Scratch responds, taking a folder that Primm was already offering. He takes out several photos of Jack in the neighborhood, and even one of him on the roof, all in costume. "They'd like their, hang on a moment," the old man fumbles through the paperwork with obvious disdain for his company. "Here it is." He clears his throat. "'Bacteria-based self-propelled marketing prototype'. That's what they would like returned to them."

Bea looks. "...You can tell that's a humanoid being, right, Detective? Are you familiar with Awesome Android v. Mad Thinker?"

Scratch furrows his brow for a minute, then seems to have a moment of recognition. "That whole thing with Reed Richards and the square-headed--"

"The detective isn't qualified to make that kind of scientific distinction, young la--" Primm starts again, and this time Scratch bodily shoves him back towards the other men.

"Shut. UP." He meets the gaze of the suddenly tenser security agents, who are now being watched much more closely by the uniformed officers. Once the detective is convinced he's put that to one side, he turns back to Bea and nods his head. "Sorry about that, miss. I'm afraid I'm still going to have to search the premises though. We'll do our best not to make a mess." Another glance at the folder. "This... is kind of distinctive, and big enough it should be hard to miss."

He pauses, gives another pointedly unhappy look at Primm, then turns back to Bea. "And... if I found this thing and had any doubts about how accurate this description is--" He limply waves the folder in his hand. "--I think it'd be up the courts at that point."

If this really is where the Thunderbolts work out of, he's got no reason to light a fire under the ass of some people who've done good for the city so far.

"Calm, no blood, check." Kelly responds, before moving to come check the situation out first hand.

"I'm afraid you can't have him. He's proven sentient enough to undergo psychotherapy. We can get a note from his doctor. No matter what paperwork you have, you can arrest him, you can hold him in a secure facility pending custody hearings if they want to challenge they are his legal guardians. But anyone who actually cares about the law cannot consider a sentient anything to be property within the US, Canada or several other nations. So... you know, feel free to put him in a cell and feed him bread and water, but if you can obtain a warrant, you're bound to uphold the law also - and Awesome Android vs. Mad Thinker sets precedent in this state - he cannot be declared property without a full hearing. You may arrest him, you cannot legally return him to them as an officer of the law."

No, she doesn't give even a single damn about the law. But she knows it.

The detective nods with a faint smile, picking at his ear with one finger while Primm starts ranting.

Jack can be found clinging to the ceiling in his room, playing video games. He'd almost run to get the doorbell, but Bea had been so serious the other day that he figured that was probably about the same as answering the phone. He was going stir-crazy.

He flips down from the ceiling, costume sliding into place. "Are we under attack? Is it time to throw the bad guys in jail?"

He has not run out the door into the fray. That counts as being professional.

Kelly, meanwhile, is still chatting with the others, in her own special way.

"By the way, while the detective has a warrant, and that's fine, no one from your company is allowed, under the law, to secure warrants. Doctor, as a resident, I've decided I don't want you on my property, which means you're trespassing. Do you want to wait 30' from the building, or do I need to ask this duly appointed representative of the law to escort you off the property and arrest you if you resist?"

Bea... this is going somewhere, isn't it?" He looks vaguely uneasy.

Detective Scratch just smiles, slowly turning to Primm and the security agents.

"You heard the lady. Officers, if you'd escort our friends back?"

The uniforms just ignore the swell of protests that come from Primm as they herd them away from the building.

Kelly can't help but grin.

"By the way, if you do arrest Jack, definitely put him in with an interesting roommate. He could use the socialization opportunities. Oh, and pretty sure Bea and Anya are going to contest any custody claims, pending his psych eval. On grounds of child abuse and neglect, probably. They'll have the paperwork for you within the hour, really good lawyers. Meanwhile, though, I'm sure Bubba or whoever you stick him with can keep him company."

"We'll figure out what should happen later. Right now, the important thing is what should /not/ happen. And we're not letting those -- " there's some cursing in Askani. It's not being a bad example because Jack won't understand a word of it. " -- take you anywhere. You're going to come say hi to the police while we explain that you're going to stay grounded until the hearing, okay?"

Jack looks hesitant. "...you promise they're not going to take me away?"

For probably the first time anyone in the Thunderbolts would have seen him, Jack's confidence (whether it was ever deserved in a situation or not) seems shaken. He looks positively frightened. He'd gotten the general gist from Kelly what people who built others for fun or profit were like.

"And please don't call me 'grounded' in front of the police.... that's just not cool."

And back to the front door. "Detective, this is Jack. As you can see, he cannot be legally returned to anyone without hearing. We'll provide an agreement in writing to attend said hearing, and he will be kept safely inside until that time."

"There it is! That's the prototype! Guardian Unit 01, you are ordered to accompany me back to your holding facility." Primm yells, as the uniformed officers keep him beyond the requested distance. "Detective, take that property out of their possession immediately!"

Jack looks as if he's going to be severely ill, and while he doesn't obey the commands, his knees buckle slightly, as if he were going to step forward.

Detective Scratch looks in front of him... and just sees a young man holding the lady's hand. "Hey, you there." He leans forward a bit, waiting until he meets the other's gaze. "Van Halen sucks."

Jack looks up at that, confused, then leans away as he gives the older man a sideways glance. "Old Van Halen or new Van Halen?"

Detective Scratch straightens up again, scratching the back of his head. "Better damn response than my niece's iPod ever gave me..." He clears his throat. "Mr Primm, I'm afraid, as I'm 'unqualified' like you pointed out, I can't tell what I'm lookin' at here."

"You... that is unacceptable!" Primm screams, even as Scratch barely seems to be paying attention anymore. The Detective gives a business card with a handwritten number on in to Bea, and winks at Kelly. "I'll be having words with your Captain over this, Detective!"

"Yeah, yeah... you won't be the first. Good day ladies." Detective Scratch excuses himself, walking past Primm and his security agents. After some deliberation, and further ranting, the agents seem to have convinced their employer it's better to just depart for the time being.

Jack just blinks, more stunned than just confused now. "I..." He looks at Bea and Kelly. "Did I say the right thing?"

Bea jsut stares at the proceedings, hand twitching.

"Well, it is an important distinction. Hagar's the one who sucks. The important thing is, they're gone. There'll be a hearing. We'll win. Then we figure out what's best for you."
