Rainy days and Sundays always get you down...
Nikki was up on the deck of the helicarrier, cup of coffee in hand with a pensive expression. She had had a cloud over her ever since her brother had left. They fought like...well...siblings, and she was constantly giving him a hard time but...he was her brother. Even if he was off in burocracy heaven...she missed her brother deeply, not that she'd ever admit it.

Sammy was taking her usual turn on the helicarrier, coffee cup in hand, when she saw Nikki. The agent didn't look like she wanted to be disturbed, but anybody staring with that expression could do something unwise.

"Hey," she said in greeting. "You don't look like this is a good place to be at the moment."

Nikki didn't even notice she wasn't alone until Sammy spoke, as if she needed another clue that things were just not right at the moment, "Sammy, Hey..no, it's...I just needed some fresh air. I didn't think anyone else was up and around this early." She offered her a smile that was more of a wince before dropping her eyes to her coffee.

She looked....well, embarassed, her cheeks coloring, "...I'm happy for Steve, I am, and he's happy...and I know I give him a hard time, and I know we fight like cats and dogs but...We've always stayed pretty close to each other, we went to the same summer camps, we went to the same college, we've always lived in the same city...I dont know if it's because we're twins or if I'm just pathetically co-dependant..and I'll deny it if you tell him but....I miss him."

Sammy sighed. "Okay, I get it. You want to really enjoy the pity party." She sipped her cooling coffee. "You and Steve are lucky to have each other. I'm envious that you have such a good relationship with your brother, so make him as miserable as possible for leaving the SHIELD home world."

"Then this may not be the best time, but I've been wanting to speak with you..." she straightened up a little at that, putting her personal issues on hold for a moment, "I've been wanting to talk to you about my role here. I feel like I'm ready for more responsibility."

Sammy could certainly put in a word higher up the food chain for Nikki, although she knew Nikki had the bones to make it herself. Then again, the other woman might be feeling a little vulnerable right now. Sammy understood that feeling.

"You're a good agent and you have the qualifications to do a lot. What exactly are you looking to do next? Head your own team? Different types of assignments? More paperwork? Not the director's chair, because then I'd have to push you off the edge." She smiled so Nikki would know the last was a joke. Mostly.

She returned Sammy's smile. "I know I'll never have the director's chair...but I'm ready for a command position, maybe my own team....maybe, someday, I'll make a good second in command.'' Hey, you couldnt fault her ambition..

When Nikki had gone to make an appointment, she didn't expect Fury's secretary to tell her he had time available in 20 minutes. She'd wanted time to get herself together, get some material to support her request..at least get a pep talk. On the other hand, if she couldn't advocate for herself, a few days wouldn't change it and she quelled her nerves and tugged her jacket she threw on into place as she stepped into his office when his secretary nodded for her to enter.

"Colonel...thank you for seeing me, I know it's short notice."

Col. Fury had his very least favorite activity going on - paperwork. Sometimes he just couldn't push it off on the deputy director, she'd either shoot him or at least make him sleep on the sofa.

He gestured for her to come in with the unlit cigar in his hand. "I tell ya right now, Coulson, I ain't orderin' yer brother back."

She blinked at that before shaking her head, "He's very happy in his new position. Lots of bureaucracy and red tape, he's in seventh heaven in triplicate.. That's not why I'm here. I wanted to talk to you about my career here. I'm ready for the next step." Was it better to be confident or humble..? She never was sure with Fury..

He pushed the tablet away and sat back in his chair. He didn't mind confident as long as she had the bones to back it up. "You do good work in yer team. Other teams could use you. What are you looking at?"

Nick nodded. She was hungry, smart, didn't try to bullshit him with careful double talk. "While yer waiting for a field command, start workin' on your file. I wanna see you branchin' out, workin' with different teams, different departments. Get a big picture education. I wanna hear somebody tell me they need Coulson for the job because she's that good."

"I can do that." and she was confident she could - it would take double shifts and a lot of favors to get people to take the time out of their own jobs to get her up to speed...but if she couldn't take the time, she didn't deserve any kind of command.
