Fluff meme: Cooking is a science!
Cooking she could do, other people putting in all that effort and cooking for her? She couldn't do. Which was exactly why when Aleks proposed this dinner thing she'd already planned on coming early to help the moment she agreed.

Well, okay, she'd avoid having to cut any onions but she was still handy in the kitchen. Besides, regardless of what people said, cooking was a science. And she was a scientist.

"Hi. Now I know the fact I brought wine may be odd, considering I don't drink it, but I do own some. Fine, I use it only for cooking, but still. Classic guest-gift and it works with the whole cooking dinner thing you've got going," she rambles once he opens the door. Lena would admit to some slight nervousness. Not willingly, but still it had to count for something.

"That could lead to terrible complications. Thankfully, that can be easily corrected, of course."

"Well I'll have to evaluate this personally. It needs to be determined if they are a statistically significant improvement over the average backrub. As for your cooking, it has enough garlic probably that you've gotten instant points."

"Is that so? Now its my turn. What can I turn these points in for?" he asks, even as he moves to check on the stuffed chicken.

"My points system is a step above the rewards cards. Less point 'recycling'," she smirked. "I can offer the backrubs and cooking too but enough points gets you a 'get out of lab' free card. Which means I am obligated to go wherever you decide to take me. Minimal complaints."

"Wherever I decide to take you? That leaves a lot of options open. Any preferences on the returns for the vacation packages?"

She blinks. "You don't do anything halfway do you?"

He chuckles. "Pure speculation at this point. But in this business, we travel. Its part of the job. I don't have a permanent address off the carrier. I just have my car shipped wherever we're dropped. Figured I'd ask whether you're more the Tuscan Village, ski resort or tropical getaway type - so I can see if you're free next time I have an assignment somewhere interesting. Don't want to drag you out of the lab too often. Just make it fun when I do. Feel free not to read anything into it."

"Well I have a permanent address on the books. I just..don't use it. As for those options...depends the season but I do all of them. Don't worry, I can ski and swim. Waterskiing is a different matter though."

"Fair enough. do you prefer any of them though? But skipping water skiing - check. I'll come up with something else for seeing you in a swimsuit."

"Hey, I said I didn't know how to water ski. Not that I wouldn't," she chuckles. "It sounds like an adventure. But really, the preference is by the season is all. Though now that I know your not-so-secret motives I'll have to take them into account."

He nods, then continues chatting while he starts pulling the chicken out of the oven, accompanied by an intense scent of baked spices - definitely including garlic.

"Not usually shy about my motives, its true. The whole agent combined with taking classes hasn't left a lot of time for slow and subtle - or even meeting a lot of people outside the life. But I like you, and I'd like to get to know you better. If I ever get moving too fast, let me know, ok? Happy to tone it down, especially over screwing something up."

She takes the opportunity to get a good whiff of garlic and savour it. Ah, nothing like garlic and chicken.

"I'll do my best. I'm not very good at talking about...that sort of stuff." No, because she hated talking about feelings that way like some air-headed teen. Which had been a problem in the past but she'd try to fix that a bit. "And same to you of course. I'd like to get to know you better. At least more than just from your medical records and tissue samples," she smiled.

"That sort of stuff, huh?" He can't help but grin, just a little, as he starts serving up the chicken and salad.
"I'm easy to get to know though. Not all that complicated."

She rolled her eyes at that but looked amused still and thanked him for the food. "So you say, but at least now I have a bookshelf to match to the cell structure I know so well," she teased. "Okay Dr. Childress, tell me, what should I know about you?"

"Hmm, let's see... actual good thing to know, since its a workplace thing, and if it comes up we had a date, people may say something... Alice Dugan and I have had an on-again, off-again thing. Mostly fast dates. Its not anything big and isn't going to be - we've just been good for each other when neither of us is seeing anyone.

I probably put as much time and money into my car as most people put into their houses. Whenever we're going to be on the ground anywhere for more than a day or two, I have it shipped over.

I'll eat just about anything, but my absolute favorites are either All-American or Russian, given the option. Likewise, while I can actually follow discussion on wines and such, I usually drink beer... because, long as its decent stuff, I like it.

That's what I can think of. You know about my medical stuff, cooking, and so on. Feel free to play 20 questions if you have specifics."

As she listened she let herself dig into the heavenly smelling chicken. Perfect amount of garlic. "Got it. Tim's cousin, car enthusiast, favourite food types, and beer vs. wine."

"20 questions huh? Hmm...let's start with one easy one and one I always like to know. Where'd you grow up and...what is the stupidest question you've ever heard? Go!"

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]heytheredelilah

"Beer vs. pretty much anything. given my tolerance levels, hard liquor doesn't have much appeal.

And it depends on which part of growing up. Some bouncing around the country when my mother was working for different criminal syndicates. A new school every four or five months, and meeting more guys named Paul or Ivan.

Then my godfather brought my existence to my dad's attention, my mother was committed... rightly so, and the bouncing around between his jobs in New York, New Mexico and as a SHIELD consultant started.

I come by the light living and world traveling honestly.

Dumbest question... hmm, can't quite say there's no dumb questions. Mostly just from the people finding out I'm with SHIELD, and asking 'are you a spy? - First of all because, well, all sorts of reasons I'm not a good spy. But more importantly because, well, even if the answer was yes, most spies would answer no - or at least not have brought up working for SHIELD"

"So what was criminal syndicate life like?" Pause. "Put the nosy question down as one of my 20." She's aware that she's hogging the question time at the moment.

"Mmm there a lot of dumb questions. Most are dumb not because of just the question but who's asking it. Because a 4 year-old asking some of those will not make me blink but some people..." She shakes her head like she can't believe the stupidity of some people.

All things considered, he seems fine with just taking twenty questions, instead of going back and forth.

"Lots of moving around. Lots of not bothering to unpack more than a few changes of clothing, or even having much to unpack. Eating out almost every night, both because there was nothing in the kitchen, and a lot of syndicate business, in higher circles, is done around the table. When you have a merc who looks good in a little black dress, speaks half a dozen languages, and bench presses twenty tons, and she's running around with someone who benches twice that, and has enough clout that Spider-Man takes him seriously... that's higher circles."

"In a lot of ways, they were surprisingly similar. Moving around, dealing with lots of important people and all... but my mother had... and has, some severe mental issues. From the perspective of parenting, anyway, it was much better. I'd also much rather be working for SHIELD and receiving the treatments as part of the contract, rather than working for HYDRA or the New York families or Russian mob and being blackmailed for them."

"Yeah, in the end, a lot of good came of it. When they split, my dad didn't even know she was pregnant. He had had a hand in so much of the Hulkbuster project, it didn't take long for them to apply it to helping me or my godfather."
