1. hal met a girl named betty when he was traveling through france after graduating from high school. betty was an american tourist who took up with hal and the two were together for a year before betty took of with some australian asshole in thailand. hal had already bought an engagement ring.

2. he eats like a horse. not in a grain-and-oats kind of way, but in a constant kind of way. he eats a lot and he eats often and his grocery and take-out bills are a little obscene. he has a super high metabolism, though, in addition to getting exercise from running four miles a day, having a lot of sex, and being a rockstar, so it doesn't really show.

3. despite having a bunch of women who he fools around with and boucing from bed to bed, hal's kind of a romantic. if he does find a girl worth settling down for, he'd do his best to give her the world. until he got tired of her.

4. he learned how to play guitar from a guy named manuel who he ran into in spain. he doesn't actually know the corresponding note letters to the hand movements, can't read music, and never writes anything down.

5. he's smarter than he seems. at first glance he's just a dirty sexed-up alcoholic rocker, but he's actually got quite a brain on him. he reads a lot of philosophy and history and has a lot of Ideas about the world.

super-sekrit: with proper motivation, he'd totally make out with a dude.
