Home in Louisiana once agan
After their trip to the prison, Jason was happy that he and Sammy were pulling up to Gran's place to spend some time. He loved his old home, but damn if he didn't love it more because Sammy was with him. Gran met them out on the back porch and smiled, looking spry for a woman who'd had a heart a attack just a year ago.

"Hi, Gran! I brought your favorite secret agent to see you again." Jason grins, going to get their bags.

"I see that, Jason. Be a dear and handle the luggage while I work on getting this poor girl fed. Sammy, you look like skin and bones." Gran frets.

Jason tries not to laugh, giving Sammy an "I-told-you-so" look.

Rather than get on the chopper, Jake faced Sammy fully and took a step toward her.

"Don't try to make this completely my fault. Your brother chose you because he knew you would get the job done. I owed him a favor and he would have collected eventually. But if /you/ weren't involved with Jason, he wouldn't be a hostage. He'd have just snatched you or someone else you know to get his point across." Jake says.

"You're just as bad for him as I am. Like I said, Fury, you aren't any better than me for Jason. You're just too selfish to let him go because you don't want to be alone." Jake says, looking her in the eyes.

She seriously hated Jake Landon. But she wasn't interested in beating a dead horse. If he was going to try to kill her, a gun wouldn't help. She needed both hands free and ninety seconds of careful aiming to make sure the man didn't rise from the dead. "You're wasting valuable time. Argue it with Mikel. I have an injured agent to take care of, and you will not fault me for taking care of my responsibilities."

The hate went both ways between them. She acted like she wasn't a cold-blooded killer that would sell anyone out to complete the mission, but Jake had seen her type before. He'd warned his brother about her, but Jason wouldn't listen. Someday, he'd learn the hard way when she got all she wanted from him.

Jake got aboard the chopper and surprised the pilot.

"Take us to your boss and don't tell anyone that Delgado is dead, or I'll kill you and fly this thing myself." he says, grabbing the man by the throat.

When the pilot nods affirmatively, Jake sits down in the back and waits for Sammy to get in.

Sammy climbed in to sit in the co-pilot seat. "All we wanted was a vacation," she muttered, not caring if anyone heard her over the comm. "Take a break, get fed, maybe swim in the pond, dance a little, but noooo. Goddamn brothers have to get in the way, like they owned the world..."

Jake put on the head phones and sat in the back and closed his eyes, trying to focus on his goal. Save Jason. That was all that mattered now. Killing a Fury or two was a bonus.

He could hear Sammy's complaints over the comm.

"For a big girl secret-agent, you complain a lot." he says.

"Come back here. I want to speak to you." he says.

"I'm on vacation," she complained. She almost added that she'd left her big girl secret agent panties in a bunch next to Jason's boxers, but didn't. That was pushing her envelope a bit too far.

Whatever he had to say, however, wasn't something that the pilot, and by extension Mikel, needed to hear. Not like she hadn't heard the threats already. So she climbed into the rear seat on the other side from Jake.

"I can shoot faster than you can move," she said by way of a warning, "and I was taught to fight in close quarters by a hairy mutant berserker, so say your piece and be done with it. I'm getting tired of the threats."

Jake simply stares at her. He figured it might come up at some point between them, but then maybe his little brother was still watching out for him.

"Jason can assemble, figure out and disassemble complex machines, as you know. I can do something similar, except my ability works on another type of complex machine: people." Jake says.

"I can see any weak points in a person's body and attack them with precision. I see where people are strong and weak and I can make them break. Delgado suffered a neck and spinal injury at some point in his life that wasn't properly addressed." Jake says, looking Sammy over from head to toe.

"You're not exactly a spring chicken yourself, Fury."

"The reason I'm telling you this is because my brother's powers might develop into mine someday. Our grandfather could do both. Jason might be able to as well. So, I'm offering you an out from your relationship before you decide my brother needs to be locked in a cell, or worse, a .45 caliber injection to the back of the skull while he's sleeping."

Not Jason. It had been Evelyn to tell her their family secret in the hope that Sammy would be able to keep Jason from making that descent into madness.

"You must be screaming inside that brain of yours," Sammy said, staring back. "Must be awfully lonely in there. The reason you're telling me this now is that you'd rather Jason become as insane and alone as you are rather than take a chance with somebody who can understand him and has the resources to get him help if he ever needs it."

"I'm actually telling you because I think you're not capable of handling someone like him unless you've got a gun to his head, the same way you handle most of your other problems." Jake says, shifting in his seat.

"He won't understand it at first, but if and when it happens, he won't tell you. He'll try to hide it and go on like all is normal. But what happens on the day you realize he isn't staring at you with love or lust in his eyes and that he's staring at you because he's trying to figure out which way to twist that stack of dimes you call a neck so that you won't scream before before you hit the floor?" Jake asks.

"Just something to think about. New topic: I'll deal with your brother if you let me walk." he says.

"You know nothing about me, period. Leave me out of your amateur psychobabble crap. You never heard of me before Jason mentioned me, you don't know anything about my background, my training or anything I can do. But I know you, Jake Landon. I got your files. I got your brother. Your grandma likes me and your baby boy loves to teeth on my keyring. But if he does get to that point, I'll make sure to tell him which way to twist so he doesn't make a mistake."

"What deal did you make with Mikel?"

"Protection and money for my family. And I didn't make the deal with him directly. Delgado came to me before my trial a couple of years ago." Jake says.

"But you didn't respond to my offer."

"I think you underestimate your brother. Second, I don't trust SHIELD to protect my family. You hear things if you listen long enough. You people can't even protect yourselves and the first time I saw Jason after I got locked up, the kid had three broken ribs." Jake says, giving her a sharp look.

"The only reason SHIELD is worth anything is because Nick Fury is in charge. Get rid of him and the whole organization falls apart." he tells her.

"Money was never a factor, Fury. My skills are." he says.

"Jason wants to be a full field agent. He got himself into that one, and I don't hear him complaining that SHIELD sold him a bad deal. Agents get hurt. It's the nature of the business." She gave him a sour look. Three broken ribs? Was he kidding?

"I don't underestimate Mikel. I know what he wants, and he knows what I want. Just so happens I won't roll over and let him have SHIELD, and he won't conveniently be in the same room with me so I can kill him. If you decide to help him with that dream of his, you won't be safe either."

At Sammy's comment, Jake does something she's never seen him do.

He smirks.

"You could have put him in a lab. You and I both know he can out-create the best people you've got on staff and it would save him from ending up kidnapped when someone comes after you." Jake says.

"Helping Mikel seemed like a better proposition than SHIELD. From what he's relayed to me, your agents don't have a long shelf life. They either get out and run, flip or take injuries that they never wake up from.

I can't help but notice that the Furys never lose a man when it counts; it's just the people around them that tend to end up dead." he says.

"Just the way it is in any military, in any country. SHIELD deals with bigger problems. As for Jason, I didn't stick him in a lab because that's not what he wanted. But don't believe me. Talk to him."

She sat back and time paused while she took in their position and how far they had to go. She didn't want to be in the air next to the psycho any longer than she had to be, especially when she couldn't trust him.

Time began again as she turned her head in Jake's direction. "I will handle my own family issues. My warning to you is not to get in my way, or believe that Mikel can keep you alive. If you think Furys can't keep their people alive, you should worry about yourself."

"I'm not worried about me, Sammy. I made peace with my fate a long time ago. Someone will kill me someday. Might be you, might be someone else. The only thing I care about is making sure that said person isn't around to tell the story after." Jake says.

"Unlike you and your brother, I want mine to have the best of everything. No matter what that is." he says.

"Then hope it's me. It'll be clean and quick."

"Once we're on the ground, I'm taking Jason and leaving. Whatever you and Mikel have planned, it has nothing to do with us. I didn't tell Jason what Mikel wanted. He doesn't know the price was breaking you out of prison."

"I don't think he can stop me once he has you there to distract him. Unless, of course, he plans to continue to hold Jason while he's injured." She gave him an exasperated look. "Then I'll have to kill him ahead of schedule. You too, if you get in my way. As you've seen, I have no problem with pulling the trigger, and perhaps you and Jason aren't the only people in this equation with special quirks."
