Despite everything that had happened lately, the monster in the woods and Janis's bits, Ella had been determind to attend tonights ball. And she was glad she had, because it looked spectacular. She stuck her tongue out and tasted a snowflake, grinning. She was looking forward to going home for break and wrapping presents with Jenny and generally being away from the school for as long as possible, this thought kept her in good spirits.
Hitching up her dress (and exposing the secret sneakers underneath, Ella walked deeper into the hall, marvelling at every little detail.
Sam had been miserable leading up to the ball. There were tons of things weighing down on his conscious but there had been bright moments, like his shopping trip for secret santa and his few skating trips, he hoped the dance would be another one of those good times. Thinking of secret santa he spotted Ella and her sneakers. He grinned and walked over to her. "Hey Ella," he grinned.
"Hey Sam!" Ella greeted warmly, blowing her fringe out of her eyes. She still hadn't a clue who had left her secret santa, all she knew was it was awesome.
"Some party, huh?" She tried to grab one of the floating lights, but it lazily floated outof her reach. "I've never seen anything so cute."
"Hell yes!" Ella almost shouted, a little breathless. "Are you? What's Christmas like in Sam's house" she teased, twirling a candy cane in her hand that someone had thrusted in her direction.
"Totally, I could use a break," he smiled. "Christmas is always crazy at my house," he slipped into the facade of everything is totally fine at home more easily than he thought possible. "Both sides of the family come visit and there are just people everywhere. Hard to find a place to stand," he grinned.
"There's a lot of enthusiasm," he laughed. "How about you?"
Ella thought that sounded pretty neat, her and Jenny only had their adopted parents, but they were the only ones who mattered.
"Oh you know, it's pretty quiet. Our mom has a stress over the turkey and then our dad drinks too much Irish coffee and falls asleep by five." She rolled her eyes but she actually liked it that way. It was familiar.
"That sounds nice," he said. "I wouldn't mind a nice quiet holiday for once."
He looked around the dance hall, people were still arriving and checking out the decorations. He grinned over at his friend. "Care for a dance?" he offered her his hand.
"Oh god, only Christmas music would nearly kill me," he laughed spinning her onto the dance floor and placing his hand on her back in a very gentlemanly manner.
"So did you enjoy your secret santa?" he asked with a little hint of a grin.
Ella put one hand on Sam's shoulder, nodding at his question. "Oh yes, I got all this..." Ella stopped and her eyes went wide. "Sam! Did you do that?!" She squealed slightly and gave him a hug. "It was the best present ever! How did you know I like rainbows so much?"
"What did you get then?" Ella asked curiously as she spun around. "Obviously it wouldn't be as good as mine, because I had the best present." She waggled her tongue excitedly.
"Someone got me LED drum sticks! And a candy corn zombie tee shirt," he grinned. "Oh! And a cool RC skateboarder," he said remembering all the contents of his great secret santa gift.
"Man I'm going to miss everyone when they all go home for break," he said.
"I was thinking about having a New Years party or something, get everyone back together towards the end of break," he smiled. Mostly he was thinking of getting everyone back together so he could avoid his family for a little while.
"Yeah, it's been pretty creepy around here yeah?" he asked looking around suspiciously.
"My house, my folks are cool with it as long as I clean up afterwards and try to not break anything," he grinned.
"I did," he nodded. "It freaked me out a little," he lied. It freaked him out a lot. He didn't like to be anywhere near the woods these days. Anything about bits in the woods brought him back to that night two summers ago. He shivered at the thought. "I'm sure things will get sorted out you know?"
"Yeah, they probably don't want people in or around when they start checking things out," he nodded. "A gator makes sense though," he nodded.
"Enough about those un-pleasantries though," he grinned. "I was thinking about working on some cheer routines during vacation, you up for a visit one of these afternoons?"
"Oh man, sure! I'm a little rusty. I've been uh, sick. I mean, I rolled my ankle and I haven't been to practice since Halloween. Some extra sessions will be great!" Ella beamed back at Sam, excited at the prospect.
"Right on! I'll try and practice extra hard. This is going to be great!" The song ended and Ella released Sam from where she was holding him, deciding to go get a drink. "Thanks Sam. I'll see you over break, yeah?"
