It was ten minutes until midnight, and things were looking good.
Generally speaking, Jenny had enjoyed a pretty good night. She hadn't been hugely invested in coming to the dance originally, but now she was glad that she had. She had gotten to talk to Charlie for a bit, and even if he wasn't the most helpful man in the room, he was a decent listener, and it was nice to get some of the things with Ella off of her chest. She had gotten to talk privately with Sera for a bit too, and things were looking better in that department as well. Things were getting less awkward, and that was always good news.
Plus, she had seen Ella earlier while she was dancing with Sam, and it was nice to see her twin smiling and enjoying herself. That made Jenny herself able to have more fun instead of just worrying the whole time.
When she and Sera had finished talking earlier, they had gone to find Rowan and Meka, and after hanging out with them for a while, things were looking even better. She had made it through the dance, and it was going off without a hitch. She was happy, Ella seemed happy, Sera seemed happy, and it was Christmas. What did she have to complain about? Even if she didn't get a single present, right then, she was happy enough to just enjoy her whole upcoming break without a single complaint.
It was actually five minutes until midnight, when things went down hill quickly.
She had eventually convinced Sera, Meka, and Ro to all join her out on the dance floor. It was the last song of the night, and the floor was packed, with everyone moving together, and bumping each other shoulder to shoulder, back to back. Lots of students had left already, but there were still loads left, and Jenny could feel the energy in the crowd. She had Sera's hand in her left, and Rowan's in her right. Meka connected them on the other side, across from Jenny, and the blonde couldn't stop grinning. She didn't care what the song was, just that it was good, her friends were good, and they were together, and even if just for just the duration of a song, they could forget all of the bad things in the world.
Jenny was actually surprised when she got a whiff of something burning. It wasn't candles, although there were some around on some of the tables that she saw. It smelled sort of like burnt hair, like when you left a straightener on it for too long, but it was also a more specific smell, something nameless, a familiar smell. One that she hadn't smelled in a long time. For years, in fact. She didn't have time to think about it very long, before there was a tingling sensation in the tips of all of her fingers, traveling up her limbs, moving into her wrists, and she felt her hands slipping out of Sera and Rowan's hands, slipping like water. She felt nausea hit her, her eyes were overwhelmed with the brightness of the tree, very briefly, before she was completely on the floor.

There was zero time for her to react, and give any warning, just like every other time this had happened in her life. She was already gone, her body convulsing on the floor, moving like there was an electric current jerking through every inch. Her eyes were closed, but the lids fluttered rapidly. One hand repeatedly pounded on the floor, soundless against the booming music. It would be sore tomorrow, badly bruised. She wasn't even aware when Ella was literally shoving people out of her way, and dropping down onto the floor beside her sister, wasting no time in turning her body around, getting her into the proper position, doing everything she had always been taught to do if this happened.
She was sweating badly, occasional small grunts escaping her, her lips smacking loudly after every senseless noise that she made. People were staring now, realizing what was going on, backing up and giving them room, but still staring. Some teachers were trying to make their way through the throng of students, excusing themselves as needed, and rushing to the scene. It felt like it went on forever, and just when it seemed like she was done, a semblance of consciousness came to her.
Her eyes were open, just barely slits, staring up at Ella, like she didn't even recognize her sister. Unknown to her, some tears were escaping from the corners, slipping over her cheeks and dripping onto the floor under her. Her face felt cold against the floor, and she looked shocked, maybe scared, mostly confused. She barely moved, looking like someone hardly clinging onto life. The music had been stopped, and the silence seemed deafening. Teachers were just reaching her now, though they stood back, giving the twins their space, knowing that Ella knew what she was doing.
Slowly, in a croaking whisper, Jenny spoke;
"The abominations are loose... loose.. they're loose."
Without missing a beat, Jenny's eyes slid completely closed again, and the blonde girl's lips turned up into a wide grin. Completely unlike herself, and completely chilling. Strange, and more than a little cruel looking. Somewhere in the audience of staring peers, a girl gasped loudly in response to seeing it. Jenny reached a hand up, the one she had been beating on the floor. It was shaking badly, but she managed to try to make a reach for Ella's cheek. "I hunnnnger. Need... flesh, blood, bone. I hunger for manflesh. Bone and bits of meat... I thirst. So close now."
Then, she was gone again. The grin left her, the reaching arm dropping away like dead weight, hitting the floor beside the rest of her crumpled body. In the otherwise silent dance, it was as loud as gun fire.
And that was how the Snowflake Ball of 2010 concluded.
