"No," she said quickly. "No, I don't want you to go," for as exposed and embarrassed as she felt, she suddenly didn't want to be alone. "I just, you know," she shrugged. "It's been a while," she laughed a little.
Meka smiled in relief, if ever she were to be caught dancing, it was better that it was by a friend. "It's been three years since I actually danced," she admitted. She turned, looked over her shoulder, and pointed to the large scar running along her Achilles tendon on her left leg. "Ruptured Achilles," she turned back to her friend.
"I guess I never really talked about it," she gave Ella a silly grin. "Seems like a silly thing to keep secret now."
Ella stooped closer to look at the scar and whistled. "Ouch dude, that must have sucked. How badly did it hurt?"
Ella returned the smile and put her hands on her hips, inspecting the hall. "It is kinda silly" she whispered and then giggled. "But better to do it now before every girl in the school has seen Black Swan and decideds to be a dancer" she joked.
"It hurt a lot, I think it hurt more... emotionally to be honest though. I was laid out for a few months and I never had the heart to go back to dancing until now I guess," she grinned.
"Right?" she laughed. "Don't want to come off as a poser," she joked.
"Well I'm totally excited you're dancing! It's awesome, like...Switching off your brain and just going with it." She nodded to Meka's speakers and iPod. "My music is kinda louder than that though." She laughed and brushed some hair out of her eyes.
"Meka. I think the last thing you will ever be called is a poser" Ella teased and raised her eyebrows. "You're already like, the coolest ever!"
"I forgot how much I loved it," she smiled. "It's stupid but... I feel like I can connect to my mom when I'm dancing," she shook her head and looked over at her iPod. "Yeah, I've always loved the Beatles," she laughed. "Want hook up to my speakers?" she asked. "I'm willing to learn something new." Meka was actually excited to be sharing this part of herself with someone else.
"Awww, thanks Ella," she blushed even further. She did not think she was the coolest ever but it was sweet of Ella to say. "I think you're the coolest ever though."
Ella nodded excitedly and selected a song before tossing her iPod at Meka. "I don't have any dance moves. I just do it. You should show me some awesome ones!"
Ella smiled goofily again and shrugged. "I haven't seen you in forever. Were you at Sam's party?"
Meka hooked up Ella's iPod to her speakers and grinned when she heard the song playing. "This sounds fun," she said returning. She started doing some simple shoulder rolls to the beat of the music and stepping side to side.
"Feels like it's been a while, hasn't it?" she said trying to hide the obvious embarrassment about Sam's party. "Yeah, I was there," she said vaguely.
"I didn't see you either," Meka said mirroring Ella's little hop and then twisting on one foot. "Uhh... yeah, I was there for a while," she shrugged. "Drank too much though," she added laughing. "Why did you and Jen leave early?"
Ella added a dip in the middle, creating a pretty cute combination of moves. "I heard it got wild, I hope Sam had help clearing up."
She sighed and shook her head at Meka. "After Jen's fit our mom pretty much had her tied to the bed. I had to sneak her out and then we had to be back early before them." She grinned, she was still pretty proud about it. It wasn't often they broke the rules.
This was a lot more fun than she remembered. "That was cute!" Meka giggled trying to mirror Ella's movement. She threw in a few skips and cute hand gestures to go along with it. "Yeah, things got a little crazy," she said pasting a big, old fake smile on her face.
"Aww, that sucks," she pouted. "At least you got Jen out and about for a bit, I bet she loved it," she smiled. "Did you girls have fun at least?"
Ella threw a full twist into the mix, not catching Meka's rather fake smile. "Totally crazy. When we left some kids were trying to make pancakes in the microwave."
Her heartbeat was picking up now with the dancing. "I think she did dude, she was super nervous about going but like, people only stared at her at first and then it was forgotten, you know? I didn't kiss anyone but who can get lucky everytime, huh?"
She couldn't help but laugh. "Pancakes in the microwave? Damn! That must have been fun to clean up," she giggled.
"Yeah, kids forget things when booze and dancing are involved," she joked. She did a quick turn so she didn't have to lie to Ella's face. "Not this guy," she said, feeling bad about lying but not quite ready for that conversation.
"But let's be honest," she grinned at Ella. "The dating pool is pretty shallow."
Ella had to admit boys were not a priority for her, and laughed. "Seriously. We'll have to go out sometime and like, cruise for hot boys! Jenny should come, she's been acting weird recently."
Meka giggled, flushing a bright red. The idea of her cruising for hot boys was pretty ridiculous, in fact, she was steering clear of boys for about... forever, but she couldn't tell Ella that. "Definitely!" Meka agreed half heartedly. Stupid boys with their stupid ideas, she thought to herself.
"Aww, poor Jenny. Do you have any theories what's up with her?"
