New Year's
The beginning of a New Year, a time for new hopes, new experiences to come. A time to reflect on times past, remembering fond memories happily and trying to put less pleasant thoughts and experiences in the past.

It is a time of renewal, a time of rebirth. And for much of the world, it is a time of celebration. This is no less true for the super hero set as anyone else. If anything, they just have that much bigger of things to look forward to.

Tim felt like his heart was ripping out, but he had to get J'anna to go away on her own before it was too late to save her. Before she died because of him. He wouldn't have her blood on his hands, too.

"You...you have to, J'anna. I couldn't live with it if you died because of me. I've already lost a good friend, one of your best friends, my mentor, and a good kid from a damned good family. You deserve better than that." Tim says.

"People who come into contact with me end up dead before their time, J'anna. I never want you to be one of those people." Tim says, rising from the chair.

"Yeah, well I don't want to live /without/ you!"

She screams at him, right up in his face.

"You're all I have! You are all I have, Tim Drake! And I can take care of myself just fine. You worry about losing me? I worry about losing /you/. Every night. From the second you leave until I hear your boots hit the floor of the elevator near dawn. Sometimes, I sneak out and I stalk you while invisible to make sure some crazy person doesn't take you away from me. I have /nothing/ in this world BUT you. Nothing. I'm not leaving. I'm not. You're going to have to physically pick me up and throw me out of here."

"That's not true, J'anna. You've got your father and the Outsiders. You've got...Rex and his family as well, right? I'm /not/ the only person you have, J'anna. I wouldn't want to be the only person you have." Tim says.

"And the way we started out was my fault, too. I could have ended this then and you wouldn't be here right now. But I ignored my instincts and now you're in danger." Tim says.

"I really care about you, J'anna. I do. That's why I'm trying not to be selfish right now and give you a way to live your life without that hanging over your head. You've seen the things that have happened in my life. I don't want to bring that kind of pain on someone else." Tim says, remaining still.

He hasn't moved to throw J'anna out, but he's also not telling her to stay.

I don't see that. I don't see that at all. You're worth the danger to me. And I could die just as easily in a bus accident as from a maniac's attack. Would that be your fault, too?"

Her shoulders start to drop a little and for a moment, she's sure she isn't going to win this. Dumped on NYE. 2010 really was the worst year ever.

"You're going to have to physically remove me. So you either better throw me out of her by force or just accept that I'm not going anywhere. Choose."

Tim looks her in the eye for a moment, readying himself to throw her out...and then goes to sit back down. She could simply go intangible and keep him from doing so. Or tk him through a wall.

If she really wanted to be mean, she could make him forget this whole conversation, but he knows that she'd never do that.

"I think you don't give the other people in your life enough credit." Tim says.

"What happens if I die, J'anna? That's a real possibility in the next twelve months." he tells her.

Going intangible hadn't ocurred to her, nor had using tk to toss him through a wall, wipe his memory, or anything else she could technically do. If he was going to cast her aside, she was going to let it be a fair fight.

She takes a deep breath when he backs away from her and sits back down.

"I think you doubt just how much I love you," she says simply.

"What happens if you die? Then I'll grieve. I'll miss you. I'll spend a lot of time drunk, lying in bed trying to convince myself you'll come home. I'll be inconsolable--and I can't promise you I'd ever get over you. I might end up a bitter, miserable old woman. I don't see the future. I don't know what tomorrow is. But what I do know is that there isn't a person on the planet that doesn't face the same question. Anyone's lover could die in the next twelve months. Or end up in a coma from which they may never wake up."

She thinks about her dad, knowing exactly where he is right now, knowing he's holding her mom's hand, wishing she'd just open her eyes.

"No one knows what's going to happen. I just know I don't want to live in what if land. I want to live in here and now, which up until about five minutes ago consisted of me and my boyfriend and had the possibility of some cuddling and maybe more but right now feels a lot like that's not going to happen."

She kneels in front of him and takes his hands.

"You aren't broken and you aren't bad luck and you aren't a curse. You're mine. And I don't want to go anywhere that isn't with you, no matter how scary, dangerous, or surreal it is."

Tim is silent for a long time. He really wishes J'anna would listen to him, but if she won't, he's going to have to live with it when the truth comes to pass.

"No one was supposed to die." Tim says quietly. "We were supposed to win and go on with our lives while the League slunk back under their rock and wished they hadn't messed with us. It all went so wrong, though." Tim says.

	"It just seems wrong to me to watch anything that isn't New Year's Rockin' Eve. Mocking Seacrest at least amuses me." She offers him a hand. "Made you casserole." Maybe the night was salvageable.
