It Tolls For Thee
Dinadan Palmer straightens up, stepping off the back of Thomas Dinawa, the older man's heart in his hand. The Lighter Than Air Society had holed themselves up in Professor Kettering's basement again, like they almost always did. It had made them very easy to find, and the fact that each and every one of them had babysat him made them easy to dispose of. Dinadan has the vague sensation that he ought to say something pithy, but with the cessation of that bubbling noise he doesn't have an audience left to appreciate it. So he says nothing, but walks across the blood-slicked floor to the telephone.

This has been a good start, but there's someone special he thinks he ought to go look in on. He dials Petra's number without hesitation, the dead not having the worries and distractions of the living to cloud their memories.

After Petra, New Morlaidh, he thinks as he raises the phone to his ear. Won't Mother be surprised.

The phone rings.

"I'll call you from a land-line and you can head right over. See you soon." Petra hangs up, then dials his number over one of the phones in the restaurant, before putting it down on the counter.

Dinadan hangs up and smirks as she does exactly what she'd said she would. It's awfully sweet how much she trusts him.

He crawls out of the ear piece on the other end of the line and makes a show of staggering into a crouched position as he hops down onto the desk and starts to grow to "human" size. So long as she doesn't get a really good glimpse of the chest wound where Jai ripped his heart out, the blood and his otherwise-undamaged body might even disguise the fact that he's already dead...

Yes, that might have worked a lot better if she weren't Petra GARDNER. Paranoia doesn't come close to detailing all the apocalyptic scenarios Guy taught her responses for; and that was just for dealing with boys. Let alone zombies.

She's on the other side of the room from the phone, and advances cautiously, but her gaze is stern.

"Din. Let me look at you." She's going to get a good look at him before she gets any closer. Either she's going to confirm he's alive, or she'll get a look at whatever medical attention he needs. The fact that he called himself 'okay' on the phone doesn't match up with his act right now either.

Dinadan pulls up a sheepish sort of smile from his memories.

"It's okay, the blood's not mine. Barbarian prince, remember? I'm just a little out of breath." He concentrates a little, just enough to fill in the hole in his chest, then hops off the edge of the desk and spreads his arms wide to demonstrate that he's "uninjured". "Still not as good at traveling the phone lines as I should be, you know?"

She advances slowly, still cautious. "Din... what the hell's going on outside?"

"Your guess is as good as mine," Dinadan says, lowering his arms and taking another few steps toward her. "I think I saw Jai running around earlier, but I hid."

Closer, closer...

"What kind of zombies are we dealing with? I didn't get the chance to really look them over, the ones I handled already. Are we talking infectious disease or some kind of magic? Isn't this closer to what you science types would deal with?"

"Like I said, your guess is as good as mine," Dinadan answers, still moving closer and closer. "I don't think it's a disease, though. The ones I saw weren't too interested in biting anyone."
