Not Florence Nightingale
Maria had heard about the battle on the island of Atlantis and heard Superboy had been hurt. News traveled rather quickly in the cape community, not to mention Terry was a member of the YJLA. Maria had to admit that she was a little worried. For Jon because he was hurt and the fact that something had seriously hurt him in the first place.

Still he was one of the few friends Maria had in this crazy world and she would pay him a visit to make sure he was going to be okay. Maybe to get him to smile too. The boy definitely needed to smile more.

She made a stop or two before going to visit him.

He picks up the phone, checking the caller ID. "Oh, hey! Good to hear from you."

"Hey yourself, big guy," Alina says brightly. Yay, he answered! Generally a good sign of recovery in a patient. "How are you holding up over there?"

"Not too badly. Giving me some time to catch up on all the paperwork and mission logs, anyway."

"Listen to you being Mr. Responsible," she teases. "Did they give you visiting hours or are they keeping you locked up tight until everything's at 100-percent again?"

"This has pretty much been life since I got back, most of my time is tied in with the league somewhere. Hours are pretty much open - traditional doctors can't do a lot with Kryptonian physiology, but stick me under enough sun lamps, I'll get better eventually. Feel free to hang out and get a tan."

"Remind me to set aside a day when you're better to remind you about this neat thing we have called 'down-time'," Alina says. "You, me, things not exploding, somewhere they speak English -- unless you've picked up another Earth-based language -- it'll be great."

She glances over toward her closet and grins. "That sounds like an invitation to show up in a bikini that isn't meant to wear swimming if I ever heard one."

"Far be it from me to object to you in a bikini." he teases. "I'm just learning about this down time thing though. Not a concept I had tried much... but I'm working on it."

"I'll be sure to credit you with the funky-looking tan-lines," she teases back. "And don't worry, I'm an excellent down-time tutor. Gold stars on my work and everything -- literally."

"I'm willing to take the blame for that one." he replies, hesitating just long enough to suggest maybe, just maybe he almost said something about it being ok for her to tan without getting tan lines... but wasn't quite that bold. "I'll look forward to the remedial class then."

Funny coincidence, she'd been considering saying something along those lines too. Ah well, might be better to have that conversation somewhere other than her bedroom where there was a much lower chance of her dad overhearing and having an entire litter of kittens.

"A willingness to learn is a good start," she says. "Let me grab a few things and I'll be right over."

Yeah, there's definitely better places for that kind of discussion - and there's some areas where, Maria being a bad influence aside, she's more likely to go than he is, discussion-wise.

"Sure thing, see you shortly."

True to her word, less than five minutes later, Alina is on-site in a swimsuit not meant for swimming -- partially because it's homemade out of former T-shirts and partially because bandeau tops and side-tie bikini bottoms won't cut it if you're actually trying to swim. She's also got a bag with her that rattles a bit when she sets it down.

"I brought board games and a couple decks of cards so we can get started on this "Jon actually taking a break" thing," she says, posing just a little bit so he can get the full effect "swim"suit. "That work for you?"

He whistles at the posing - he's definitely loosened up some. "Yeah, sounds great to me. Make yourself at home."

Alina giggles and preens a little at the whistling before plopping herself down next to him and doing just that -- and, you know, taking the opportunity to enjoy the view herself.

"Glad to see you looking better," she says. "I bet sunburns have never been a concern of yours, huh?"

"Been looking into the magic-lightning thing as best I can, but haven't come up with anything yet," Alina says, making a face. "Other than that, wrapping up school stuff and looking forward to summer. So ready to be done with finals."

"Maybe, but I'm still investigating it," Alina says with a shrug. "At the very least it's good practice, and there's always the chance it'll result in the perpetrator catching a case of magical ass-itch."

She stretches and rolls her head from side to side. "Biology and watercolors. At least the last one's a final project instead of a test, even if it takes longer."

"Oh, definitely not wanting to discourage you from investigating. The more people looking into it, carefully, the better. What kind of watercolors project are you working on?"

"I'll let you know if I find anything."

Alina shrugs. "Self-portrait using our yearbook photos. I'm going the arty route and using weird colors instead of trying to match them to reality. More fun that way, you know?"

"I'll bring it by once I get it back with my grade," Alina says with a shrug. "I don't know if I'm a particularly 'artistic' type. I just like bending the rules and finding loopholes in 'em to keep from getting bored."

She's not quite sure if that's a result of who she is and how she was raised or a side-effect of having all that chaos magic swirling through her, but it's not something she's too concerned about either way. Her life would be different without her magic, but her life would be different without her arms too.

"Sounds good, I'd love to see it. Never had much of a brain for art myself - I don't 'get' half the stuff in the Metropolis Art Museum, no matter how much my sister tries to explain it. She, and mom have all the artistic talent in the family."

"Museum stuff is a whole 'nother ball game," Alina says with a laugh. "I'm pretty sure that being 'museum-quality' has to involve a little skill in fast-talking. Not that I doubt they're really good at what they do, but I've seen stuff in museums and auction houses done by 'serious artistes' that look like they were done in pre-K craft hour."
