Moving in on a kill
Jane was making sure the body armor she was going to wear wouldn't be too noticeable. Then she rolled her eyes wondering why she was being so paranoid. Jake wasn't going to hurt her. But it was still smart to worry about the other guys.

So she made sure that she was in black from head to toe more or less. Nothing reflective. Soft soled shoes so nothing would clatter and an extra gun strapped to the small of her back. She didn't think he would stop her from using it. She didn't intend on killing anyone tonight but it was probably going to happen.

She wasn't going to lie to herself about this. Tonight was going to be dangerous. Hopefully nothing added to it. With that in mind she set out for the building. She took care with everything she did. No one should know about her getting there aside from her partner for the night. So all she had to do was wait for him to show up and she would be ready to move in.

"Jake" steps from the shadows behind Jane silently, not even a rustle of his uniform to give him away. He's dressed in all black as he was before, except now there is a black hood pulled over his head to obscure cover his face. His bow is strapped over his shoulder, and there is a small hand crossbow at his hip. If the Yakuza are here, it won't fool them once the firing starts, but it will at least take them by surprise.

"Jane." he says from behind her to indicate his presence. "I need to ask you something."

"What are your views on killing in self-defense?" he asks.

She doesn't quite jump but there is soft cursing from her. Then she gives him a look because he had startled her. She wasn't going to let it go much further than that though. She just took in his appearance with a crooked eye brow.

Oh right.

"Well, that's complicated," she says with a shrug. "I try to avoid it when I can. I'm good enough that I don't have to worry about it too often. If you have to kill someone to protect someone else I'm okay with it. I would rather avoid killing but these guys might not give me that option because if it comes down to it? I pick us over them."

He nods. Her views are the same most others.

He will try to reign himself in.

"Very well. You already know that there are are armed guards. I took out two on the way here, but there may be more inside." he says, taking a look at the building.

"What time does the auction start? If we can, it may be best to simply steal the mask and get out again before anyone notices." he says.

She didn't expect to meet anyone with a vastly different view point. Most people really weren't okay with killing in her experience.

She checks her watch. It is just shortly after nine. "The auction itself starts at eleven. And really, it would be much easier like you said just to seal the damn thing."

"All right. Then the first thing we need to do is minimize our visibility." he says, pointing at security cameras on the left and right side of the building.

"We won't make it to the door without being seen, the way those cameras are set up. What floor is the auction on?" he asks as he draws the hand crossbow and fires one shot at each camera.

There is the light sound of cracking glass as both go out. Thirty seconds go by, then the back door opens. Two men in black suits emerge into the night, each brandishing a handgun and looking about the darkened area.

"Second floor. It's in the western auditorium," Jane informs him. She thinks they have a good chance of getting in.

She has her gun out. At times like these she wishes she had some kind of silencer but that was almost playing dirty. She didn't want to draw too much attention to them either.

Ah, there was no way around it. A shot to the leg would take out of the game. So she takes the shot.

Jane fires her weapon, clipping the foremost man in his right leg. The leg buckles and he yelps, falling to the ground.

The second man turns in the direction of Jane's shot, trying to line up a bead on her, and ends up with a crossbow bolt through his gun hand for this troubles.

"Let's go." Jake says, quickly moving forward. He gets the man his arrow took down, kicks the gun away, and punches him in the face. His resistance ends there, and Jake disregards the man further.

"Nice shot." he says with appreciation as he rifles through his guard's pockets. A wad of cash is taken, as are keys and an ID card.

When Jane is ready, Jake will open the back door to the building for her.

"Ladies first." he says.

Personally she would have left the cash. The poor bastard might need it if he survives the night. She nearly whistled at the shot that Jake made but chose not to since they didn't have time for stroking egos.

She made sure the guy she shot was down and out for the count and swiped his ID card. They might need both.

"Thanks," she says simply going in ahead of him. Her gun is slightly raised and she is watching for any other guards on her way in.

The hallway is poorly lit, and the lights flicker as if they're being toyed with by an overactive child. The hall goes on for about thirty feet, and Jane can see that it becomes a T-section at it's ending, allowing one to go left or right.

Jake watches behind them to make sure they aren't being pursued from the rear, but stops as voices become audible from up ahead, and the left side of the juncture.

"Bernie, go find Max and Milo and tell them to get back here. The rest of these viewers need to stay in this room while Mr. Kestrel views the merchandise. Boss thinks the Yakuza are going to try to stiff him because he's white.

I'm gonna make sure there's no trouble." the voice says. Jane will then hear footsteps coming in her direction.

Jake will follow her lead.

And this is being run by a criminal organization? With a shady connection to a multimillion (possibly billion she doesn't follow stuff like that) dollar company? She still feels like she is missing the big picture.

Jane looks or any way to avoid being seen. There are no doorways or any places to duck into. Just their luck.

She frowns then gets ready to take a shot to knock down the guy who should be rounding the corner any second.

The hall is narrow and there aren't any doors or other cover to duck into. They're exposed unless they can take control of the situation.

The man, Bernie, comes around the corner and sees Jane. He's six feet tall, but he's slim and much older. He might even been someone's grandfather.

He's utterly surprised for a second, but then reaches into his coat, fumbling for his gun.

Jane will feel guilty latter.

She just gives him a 'sorry Gramps' look before shooting him towards the shoulder of the arm that is fumbling for the gun. It will hurt him like hell. Hopefully it will miss his lungs but he will be on the ground and not a threat.

Jake watches Jane pull her gun and shoot the man. She gets hits him in the shoulder. Slade would've called the shot a failure, but for now, the shot did it's job.

Bernie crumples from the shot and falls to the ground, dropping his gun and writing in pain. He looks up at Jane, then Jake, and groans, taking several wincing breaths.

"Gonna...kill you...you little bitch." he says.

Just then, Jane and Jake hear muffled shouting, gunfire, and then...nothing.

Jake raises an eyebrow. "That isn't encouraging. We need to go." he says.

It was some time latter when Jane decided they should have something to eat. It ended up being scrambled eggs and toast since she hadn't stocked the kitchen very well and she didn't trust some of the things that were in the pantry from the last time her Dad had been here since it had to have been over three years ago.

She set a plate of food near Jake and lounged in a chair while picking at her food. She is thinking a little harder than she would like about what happened and is tempted to replace the food in front of her with a beer. It would be a good way to start forgetting what happened.

He comes awake at the scent of the food and he begins eating quickly. The food is good and as he eats, he watches her, much as he did at dinner before. For someone who is good at operating on adrenaline and keeping her emotions in check, Jake notices that Jane often wears her mood on her face.

And much like him, she seems to spend much of her time alone.

"This is great. Thank you." he says, continuing to eat. When he's done, he sits the plate on the table before him, and waits.

She will talk, or not, when she's ready.

She didn't have too many people she was willing to let in. She could easily count on her hand the number of people who got to know the real Jane Doe-Smith. And only one of them hadn't raised her in some fashion.

"Not a problem," she says before finally munching on some of the toast on her plate.

Silence fills the air for a while before she gives in. "I'm not good about discussing my feelings or anything. I'm used to dealing with stuff by hitting it. Very easy to do, ya know."

He nods.

"I'm not asking you tell me your hopes and dreams, or any secrets, Jane. We just fought an avatar of a Japanese Demon God that nearly killed us both. Oh, and the band of Yakuza who tried to kill him and us.

Only a the most hardened person doesn't have a reaction to that." he says.

Only people like me. he thinks.

"I notice there are no pictures out. Nothing that looks like it's irreplaceable." he says. "You plan on staying in this place?"

"I might stay on. This building belonged to my father and it's mine now." She leans back in her seat.

"The last month or so has been crazy for me. Heck. The last six months. I keep getting into thicker and thicker trouble." She wasn't going to talk about her part in bringing Cthulu down.

"I'm not a hero. I just do what needs to be done as best I can. And that mask shouldn't be used like that. I'm going to make sure it goes back where it belongs."

"Funny thing about heroes and villains: neither of them ever consider themselves to fall under either label. It's the people around that judge their actions and give them their labels." he says.

"But you had the choice to save yourself or let me die tonight. You still give a damn about your fellow human being enough to fight for them when the chips are down and the path is tough." he says.

"They call those type of people heroes, Jane."

Jane claps a hand over her eyes obviously not wanting to think about it.

"I renounce spandex. It's impractical," she informs him in a tone that is mostly serious. "And I don't leave people behind. I just-- It's one of those things I'm incapable of doing."

She'd rather not go into why.

"Too bad about the spandex. The world suffers." he grins, before becoming serious again.

"You don't leave people behind, but they've got no trouble leaving you." he says simply. Maybe he's completely off, but then, he knows how that is, too.

"Jane, whether or not you're a hero is something you can debate with yourself until the end of time. But what's apparent to anyone who takes a good look at you is that you're a warrior. A warrior who never quits, who never gives up, and, above all who has yet to reach the limits of what she's capable of." he says.

"Someday, you're going to be nigh-unstoppable, if you choose to be."

Jane flushes again for a moment. Then she shrugs lightly.

"People never stop learning. I've never really stopped learning either. There's always something new to study."

The blond figures that he is serious about everything he is saying. He has no reason to bullshit.

"Thanks." She means it. "I guess I'm going to have to keep learning if I keep getting cases like this."

She wouldn't admit the fact it paid very well had some appeal since it kept her from having to do the more boring kinds of cases too often.

She leans back and chuckles. "There are a few cases I've turned down because I wasn't comfortable with them. I do a few cases that involve surveillance. Sometimes I find I just don't agree with what they're asking me to do."

He nods, taking that into account. "Well, you're good at what you do and you've got the right to choose who you work for. But you say you keep getting drawn into crazy stuff.

Back home, we call that 'destiny'. And you know how to throw a party, Jane." he smiles.
