Tussle in Thailand
With some assistance from T.H.U.N.D.E.R., the team managed to convince the Thai government to allow them to follow the August General's lead to Proteus' location. The area itself was the suspected headquarters of a Malay terrorist group, so the JLI was advised to be on the lookout, as it was suspected Proteus may be working with the organization.

Petra's ready to turn this guy into a popsicle again, but she's curious what plans Xian's parents have in mind for him.

Meanwhile, when she catches Ghost Fox Killer examining Lizzy, she positions herself by the other girl's shoulder. She smiles, points at her friend, and gives a thumbs up.

Pippi looks around during the discussion, trying to make heads or tails of this. But Barbie isn't reacting badly, so things are probably ok. That's usually a good measuring stick.

Barbie looks a little to Din for confirmation, but ...
"Of course, Sir. We're all interested in seeing justice done and Xi'an safe here."

Dinadan nods once to Barbie. He's sure that the senior August General in Irons has had some experience in not doing politically-uncomfortable things in high-stress situations; and he likely has a better idea of how to go about effectively interrogating someone than any of them do.

Dex kept quiet and waited for the punching. The punching was always much more fun than talking.

"Thank you." He steps over to where Proteus is being held and looks the man dead in the eye and starts to speak in a different language. Anyone linguistically familiar will realize that it is a Ukrainian dialect, albeit an obscure one. The General's tone is cold, but commanding. He gives a subtle nod of his head towards his wife and Proteus paled. The General repeated something that sounded like a question. Proteus seemed to be looking back at forth at the Chinese officials, Proteus, and then a gulp upon looking at Ghost Fox Killer.

"Yingzi Bi!" Proteus finally yelled in a panic. "They called themselves the Yingzi Bi!"

The General seemed to be take aback by this answer.

"What?" The official said in admonishment. "He plays us for fools. The Yingzi Bi doesn't exist."

Pippi pokes Barbie gently, leaning in to whisper. "Yahtzee, what?"

Petra keeps up with bits and pieces of the dialect, but it takes her focus. The abrupt shift back to Mandarin surprises her, enough that she can't even laugh at at Proteus' panic.

"...the Yingzi Bi..." The travel addict says it to herself, trying to find the needle in a haystack of various foreign tidbits.

When next the General spoke, it was in English.

"Yingzi Bi means Shadow Arm," he explained. "It is an organization that allegedly works behind the scenes to further the ambitions of the Chinese government without official recognition by it so that it may do what it feels neccesary without tarnishing the reputation of the Party or the state."

"That's slander, General!" The bureaucrat's face had reddened. "The organization is a myth. It does NOT exist. It's slander put out by Western intelligence to justify their meddling in sovereign Chinese affairs." The man spoke in Mandarin, clearly hoping no one on the team could understand him.

"Regardless that is who he says has my son."

"There is no Yingzi Bi," the bureaucrat snarled. "I will not have you sniffing out fairy tales. It is simply some subversive group trying to use the name as some means of leverage."

Another poke of Barbie. "I understand all the words except the Yahtzee part, but it still doesn't make any sense. Are these one of those things that don't really exist but are really important, like Dex's smurfs?"

Barbie just listens for a bit. In Mandarin, she says, "Gentleman, I have no interest in arguing." In English. "The Official Story is that it's it's officially just a story. But it's the name that whoever has Xi'an are using -- and sure, who wouldn't use some 12-year-old's-idea-of-tough name like that, anyway? -- and people who hide behind stories generally try to stick around the source of the story, so he'll likely still be in Chinese-controlled territory, possibly with suspected government affiliations."

Ma looks at barbie with a barely suppressed look of annoyance.

"In that case, this has officially become a sovereign Chinese matter. The task of finding Colonel Fang falls to the state now. Return to America and we will inform you of when we find him."

The August General in Iron and Ghost Fox Killer were both unusually silent. The couple shared a brief look and with barely a look of acknowledgement, Ghost Fox Killer subtly disappeared.

The secretary clearly hadn't noticed. "Soldiers, take the shapeshifter into custody. He has many crimes against the state to answer for."

Petra flashes a grin, particularly in Dex's direction.

"I have this sneaking suspicion we're about to get backed into a corner that will make us have to do something terribly rude.

I, for one, have never caused an international incident before. But then again, I've never had a friend to rescue like this before."

Dinadan buried his face in his hands.

Secretary Ma would have walked out of the room. He would have walked out of the room, and they would have been able to deal with this like the contrary heroic assholes they all were. But noooooooo. No, let's brazenly commit to causing an international incident. Why not? It'll be fun.

Maybe he could just feed EVERYONE to the ants.

"Not. Helping."

That actually caused Ma to smile.

"Yes. You are," he asserted with confidence. The soldiers drew their weapons, pointing them at the JlI. "You will leave Chinese soil immediately. I will see to it though that the Party recognizes your service in bringing us the terrorist."

"That won't be necessary, Secretary," the August General assured, finally speaking up again. "We will see to it that they leave."

Anyone who may have caught Ghost Fox Killer's sudden disappearance will note she had returned, again seemingly out of nowhere.

"Fine," Ma conceded. "Feel free to summon the rest of the Great Ten if they remain obstinate. I will be putting a call in to T.H.U.N.D.E.R. otherwise." The man turned and made his way out as the soldiers escorted Proteus along behind him.

When they were gone, the General made an odd smile with his metal mouth as he turned to Ghost Fox Killer. "You have it, beloved?"

"Of course I do," she assured, handing him a computer disk.

"This is what you will need to find our son," he informed. "It's the suspected location of a 'terrorist' group said to operate in waters considered part of Taiwan's territory by most. I hope you understand the potential consequences this could mean for all of us involved." The General's stance was a mirror-image of the determination in his wife's face. despite the radically different appearances. "We've done our part, but we're counting on you get Xian out of there whatever the cost."

Barbie will apologize to Din later. She'd actually been going for sarcastic-cooperation in a'sure, we'll keep up the pretense' way, but her skills were clearly lacking. Still, the parents handled that.
She takes the disk. "We'll do all we can."

Petra looks back at Pippi with a mixture of 'We are?' and 'Where's this coming from?'

She then puts on her best waitress-smile and nods to Xi'an's parents.

"In case you didn't get the memo... we're big damn heroes."
