One Year Ago
Nick Fury knew where all of his troublemakers were almost all of the time. This way he knew when a headache was coming. There was one individual, not necessarily one of the troublemakers, he always kept tabs on was one Steve Rogers, aka Captain America.

Rogers was currently enjoying a cup of coffee and scrambled eggs at Rosie's Diner. Nick walked into the diner carrying a manila envelope. He slid into the booth and smiled at the waitress that appeared at the table. "Cup o' yer best, honey," he said favoring her with one of his best smiles.

"Coming right up," she said and went to get the coffee.

He looked at Steve and slid the envelope across the table.. "Got somethin' ya might be interested in."

Seeing James was always a hard thing for Natasha to deal with. Just seeing him tore at her heart and after each visit coping took a few bottles of vodka. A year of seeing him and having her heart ache at the sight of him. A year of drowning herself with vodka afterward.

She was happy SHIELD was making progress undoing the brainwashing, but she wandered if he would ever be free of it.

When the message came that he wanted to see her, she couldn't say no.

She arrived in full uniform and fully armed. The Widow didn't trust lightly.

James looks up as he realizes that someone is there, on the other side of the glass at his cell. When he sees Natalia, he has to hold back a a smile. It wouldn't do to make her think he was in good shape, to fall back into old patterns.

No matter how much he wanted to.

"I'm glad you showed up first, Natalia. You'll be able to help me convince Steve, and then Fury of what needs to be done now." James says.

"He needs to find the darkest hole he's got and lock me in there, then throw away the key. There were rumors in Russia that the Americans built a prison to hold the super-types during the Registration Act.

That place would be the best idea to make me disappear." he says.

"Natalia, you know the things I've done. Worst of all, /I/ know. The justice system would never let a man who's done the things I've done walk free. Hell, I keep expecting Fury to walk in here any minute and give me the old-fashioned .45 caliber injection to the back of the head." James says.

"Whether I did it of my own will or because I was brainwashed, people still died, Natalia. Lots of people. There's no way I can live with that." he says, looking at her sadly.

"You have to let me go, beautiful." he says, putting his hand to hers on the other side of the glass.

"I will not. I love you too much to just let you go."

She wanted the glass to not be there. She wanted to feel his hand touching hers.

"You are no more guilty than I am, James," she said. "We were both weapons and used as such. It does not make us any less guilty, but it does not condemn us to life in a prison cell. So many died at each of our hands, but it is the nature of the business. It's not pretty, it's dark and ugly, but that's just the way it is."

He sighs when she says she loves him, because he knows it. He also feels the same way. He loves her as much now as he did the night they tore them apart, but one of them has to be rational, has to think.

"I would never ask you to wait for me, Natalia. That wouldn't be fair. Besides, we don't even know if I'm fully free of whatever they did to me. We can never be sure they don't have a way to stop me or take control again, and I /will not/ endanger you, Steve, or anyone else in that way again." James says.

He has nightmares about it, about being with her when they come for him again. Someone says a word, and he goes from holding Natalia to strangling her to death. That scared him.

"I don't want to be the reason you die." he says.

"Nor have I. I...dream about you sometimes." he says quietly, his forehead joining hers on the glass.

"But you know that I'm right. Besides...even if I /did/ get out of here, I have no clue what I'd do with my life. The world is so...different now. They've let me watch TV and all I see is so much that's /wrong/. No service would take me with my record, but I can't imagine doing anything else than serving my country.

It's all I've ever known." he says.

"The Avengers is for heroes, Tasha. People would ask questions, want to know things. I couldn't be a part of a group like that after what I've done. It's funny, in a way: lately, all I can think about is what Toro and the others would think of me." he says.

"I'm scared that you're going to realize how messed up I am one of these days and stop coming back." he says.

"But I hate the thought of never seeing you again, even if it's for your own safety." he says.

	Steve had been by to visit James a lot whenever he could even when James didn’t want him too. He was so glad to see all the progress that he had made over the year. He knew that James could and would get better. Walking in Steve says rather confused, “I’m not interrupting anything am I?” (Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

Bucky is about to reply to Tasha when he sees Steve come in. He'd have to explain to his friend about him and Natalia soon.

"Hey, Steve. Glad you came. Natalia thinks Fury should let me out of here at some point, but...I need to be sure I'm not a danger to anyone else.

What do you think? Or do you think I should stay in here?" Bucky asks.

There's a part of him that hopes Steve doesn't /want/ to let him out of here.

"You two are both great. I don't know if I'd have gotten through all of this without both of you." James says.

"Either of you talk to Fury yet?" he asks.

	"Fury says that you're ready in SHIELD's eyes. So whenever you feel you are ready, you can leave." She supposed that Steve would want to talk to her at some point about how she knew James. That would be a lot of explaining. (Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)
