Family
Kalypso sat outside a small cafe in Rome and sipped her cappuccino. Normally she would go to a cold place, like the upper atmosphere, when she wanted to think, but today she wanted to be among mortals. She didn't want to feel so separated from them as she normally felt. Like she had been feeling since finding out she was an Eternal and not a mutant.

She watched the people pass by as they went about their daily lives. They were completely oblivious to the danger the world they knew was in. An ancient enemy stirred and none of them had any idea of what was happening. These days she wanted to be as ignorant as they were. She didn't want to know that the deviants were stronger and more powerful than they had ever been. It wouldn't be long until all out war started. She didn't want to know that the deviants wanted to enslave humanity.

She sipped her cappuccino and watched the sea of humanity around her.

Eliosha Paravich sat in the same cafe in Rome, deciding what to do next with his newfound freedom. He was already sick of coffee (even WITH vodka), but he had not yet grown tired of watching the humans with their cappuccinos and espressos and fancy clothing.

His eyes settled on a particular female a few years in front of him who seemed to be watching people as intently as he was. He wondered what she thought of the sea of humanity, so he reached out to gently touch her mind with his. He simply wondered if any of these humans could understand just how fleeting their lives were to those who would outlive them and all of their descendants.

Kalypso would feel the touch of his mind on hers, but it was not invasive or probing. Eli was only trying to find out what she was thinking of those around her.

*You really don't want to do that,* she sent back along the link.

Few people are bold enough to tell a stranger what they do and do not want, my lady. I've no quarrel with you; I only want to share some information. he replies. Even across the telepathic link, his Russian accent is audible.

Eli is a bit surprised that this particular being is so aware, but he has yet to see her face.

Perhaps if you turn and face me, we can continue this conversation aloud." he says.

For your comfort. he quickly adds.

*Come join me then,* she sent. Kal was cautious, but knowing she couldn't be killed except for only very extreme measure made her a little less cautious than she would have normally been.

Very well. he says.

Then he is sitting directly across from her, as if he has always been there; many of them are so wrapped up in their own tasks that they don't seem to notice. Eli looks into her eyes for a moment, then smiles. It's an attractive expression on his face, although it appears foreign, as if he's unused to doing so.

"Well, I suppose I can mark another goal off my list as of now." he says. He doesn't elaborate.

"What do you see when you look at them?" he asks aloud.

Kal didn't jump at his sudden appearance, but it did make her blink a few times. The face was familiar. She had seen it somewhere before. Her mind raced to place it.

"Please do tell what that goal was?"

"The people?" she asked with a head tilt. "I see them going about their day and their lives."

Eli smiled for a moment, then leaned back in his chair.

"I meant to meet a beautiful woman in Rome. I succeeded." he says. He doesn't expect it to flatter her, but it's worth the try.

She answers his question, but not with the...depth that he hoped.

"No, please. Tell me what you truly see when you look at them." he says.

She smiled at the compliment/flattery. "Thank you. Such a large compliment from someone who hasn't introduced himself."

She held out a hand. "Kalypso Sersi."

She left the other request go for now. She had to know his name. Maybe she would remember where she recognized his face from.

"I did not? Where are my manners today? I must have left them in Sierra Leone." he jokes, and tries to remember if he actually did leave anything in Sierra Leone he should be worried about.

"My name is Eliosha Paravich, Miss Sersi. However, please call me Eli." he says, taking her hand as his mind works over her name. It was familiar to him as well, but the only Sersi he was aware of...

was the one his father had been in contact with some years ago. One of their number. A coincidence? He suddenly wished he had access to the database back home. He could access it now, but it would require a rather vulgar display of his talents, and he didn't want to reveal himself any further in case he was wrong.

"How are you enjoying Rome thus far?"

"Please, call me Kalypso or Kal. Miss Sersi makes me think that you're addressing my mother." She gave him a smile. Eliosha Paravich. The name rang a bell. From where?

Then it struck her. The database in Olympia. Now she knew who he was.

She smiled more. "It's always nice to meet family, cousin. I did not expect to meet anyone from Polaria here in Rome."

When she mentioned that Sersi was her mother, Eli nodded in understanding; when she mentioned Polaria, his guard relaxed more.

"Very well, Kalypso. I will not shorten your name any further; I like it as it is." he smiles.

"I agree that it's always nice to meet family on one's travels. This is my first real outing, so it's good to meet someone I have something in common with. Everywhere else I've been, I've felt like an outsider more than anything." he says.

"So, are you just passing through Rome or do you come here frequently?"

A somewhat sad look appeared on her face. "Feeling like an outsider is common for our people when we are among humans, or so I'm learning," she said.

"I just came for a cup of cappuccino. It's hard to get really good cappuccino elsewhere, even in New York. What about you? You mentioned Sierra Leone and traveling. Are you exploring?"

A somewhat guilty look crosses his face.

"Father did not approve of the idea of me traveling about before now. My mother had to trick him into it, so to speak. But yes, I am exploring. I was in Boston, I think it is called, not long ago. I tried their cappuccino. And their lattes. And their espresso. I haven't found a coffee drink yet that isn't made better with vodka." he says, smiling.

"I've visited several places since leaving Polaria last week; I was in Sierra Leone just last night. Now, however, I'm at a loss as to where I should go next. I somehow thought the world would be smaller if I could go where I wanted on a moment's notice.

There is so much to do, and even more time to do it in." he says.

"Yes, I would imagine your father would not like the idea of you traveling," she said carefully. The Eternals, like all families, had their arguments and disagreements and Eli's father Druig seemed to be at the center of a lot of them. Cousin Druig was...well Kal stayed out of it and let Ikaris deal with him and the other Polar Eternals.

"You sound like you're in a rush to see it all," she said with a small smile. "As Mother says, there is all the time in the world," she said. Provided she lived through the coming war of course.

"To answer one of your first questions, cousin, when I look at humanity I see wonder, curiosity, ignorance and in a way some innocence."

Eli was aware of the disagreements with the other factions of their people; Father made no secret of his issues with Ikaris, though Eli did not know where they started. He would have to ask Ikaris himself someday.

"I suppose I have been a bit anxious to see as much as possible while I have the freedom. I could be called home at any time to aid in defending Polaria, and who knows when the next respite will come?"

He nodded slowly, listening to her answer and considering that he'd not thought of it in those terms, even if he that's what he saw as well.

"I agree with your assessment, even if it is a bit optimistic. Many of live in the moment even as they prepare for a future they may never see, or live long enough to appreciate. Yet, it doesn't deter them at all.

I admire that about them. They will never be here again, so they triumphs and failures are more beautiful for it." he says.

Kal nodded. "With the war coming, we could all be called back at a moment's notice." She hoped Druig was taking the threat of the deviants seriously. If the Eternals were not united, it would be certain doom for them and the planet.

"You should see Olympia some time. It's one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Though it does pale when compared to the view of Earth from a high atmospheric altitude."

Kal paused for a moment. "I grew up among humans. I've never found them fascinating or special until after I learned what I was. Now I see them differently and it's intriguing."

Father seemed to talk of nothing but the war these days, and actually accused their cousins of not doing all they could to combat the threat of the Deviants, though Eli had no evidence that such was true.

"Olympia was another place I wanted to visit soon. I think I will do that someday soon." he says. He does not say anything to her comment regarding seeing the world from a high-altitude, preferring to keep the knowledge of his disability to himself.

"I am learning more of them each day, and while some of it is intriguing, there are parts that are disappointing, even disturbing. I only hope they learn to work together, as our people have done, in the future." he says.

"Do you have many human friends?" he asks.

The war was all that most of the Eternals could talk about these days. Probably one of the reasons Kal had even less contact with her family.

"I would be willing to take you there and show you around." She smiled. "And introduce you to the family."

"Titan is also beautiful. It's amazing what they have done there. More of our Earth cousins should visit and renew ties with our Titan cousins."

"Some," she said. "I had my friends in school and recently I've made friends with the Avengers and the Young Avengers. Though I am sort of a legacy kid."

"I would like it very much if you would, Kalypso. I've been looking forward to meeting more of the family." he smiled.

Eli had heard little of what was going on out on Titan, but Kalypso was right; relations between all the families would become chill and brittle if they were not actively maintained.

"Perhaps we could go on a tour of the homelands. We could go to Olympia, then Titan, then Oceania, and finally Polaria. It would help us maintain ties with all of them." he says. The idea sounds good to him, at least.

When she mentions that she knows the Avengers, Eli becomes a bit more interested. "I have heard of the Avengers, and they seem like honorable people. You are full of surprises, cousin of mine." he says.

"Anytime you want. It's a quick flight there," she said. She did not teleport unless it was absolutely necessary.

She smiled. "I would like that. Anytime you want to go. I would just need to tell Jack before I go." Though she doubted she'd be warmly welcomed in Polaria.

"They are. Both of my parents were Avengers so I guess it's natural I know them and become a reserve member. If you're ever in New York I can introduce you to them. Iason is a full time member."

"Oh, I'm certain it is." he said, again not making any comment about flight.

"Oh, of course, please make your arrangements. You have a life and friends and likely a million other things going; I do not want you to drop anything on my account. After all, we have nothing but time." he said.

"Sersi was an Avenger? I can only imagine the adventures she's had and places she's seen. I would like to meet your friends as soon as possible, Kalypso. They are regarded as heroes, and it is not often that one can say they've met such august personalities."

She mentioned Iason, and that name Eli knew. Father often spoke of Ikaris and his son, Iason, and the words were not always kind. He wondered what falling out they'd had before he was born that would lead to such animosity, but he never pressed. Father didn't like to speak of it.

"I'd also like to meet Iason, too. I bet he has many stories to tell."

"Jack's a lot more than a friend," she said as her cheeks turned pink. A smile stretched her mouth when she thought of Jack.

"She was...still is I guess. From what I've gathered and seen, you never stop being an Avenger. You just go inactive or be a reserve member. My father is an Avenger as well, though these days he spends most of his time on Titan."

Kal finished off the last of her cappuccino. "Let me give you our address in New York and my cell number. When you're ready to meet everyone there and go traveling, you can contact me."

Eli's eyes widened. "Oh! It is a relationship!" he said, keeping his voice low.

"I am happy for you, Kalypso. This Jack is good to you?" he asks.

"I am sorry, it is not my place to ask. I hope that you two are happy, though." he says.

He hands over his Blackberry to let Kalypso enter her information. "I'm still learning about how this thing works, so please do not be offended if I don't call right away, or accidentally call you at an improper time. I can be anywhere at a moment's notice unless I'm in Polaria." he says.

He nodded. "Yes. I do not have the difficulty with it that many of our people do. I...happen to enjoy it, in fact. More so than flying."

True and not true.

"I am glad for you and Jack. He is a lucky man. I will be sure to tell him this should I meet him." Eli says.

"Intersting," Kal mused as she offered him his Blackberry back. "It's interesting how we have the same base powerset and yet we have these little quirks."

Kal dug into a pocket and pulled out a few Euros and placed them on the table. "Thanks. I'm sure you will get the chance to meet him when you visit."

"This is true. One can never tell where one us will excel and or fall short. But is good that we are not all the same." he says. He accepts the Blackberry back and reminds himself to learn all of it's secrets tonight.

"I look forward to it. In the meantime, travel safely, Kalypso, and call me if you need anything." he says as she takes the money from her pocket.

When she looks up, Eli is gone.

Kal shook her head as she looked at the empty chair. Only in her family.

She stood up and then lifted off the ground. It was time to go home.
