A Hard Day's Work (Possibly NSFW)
It had been over two months since Alisa had come to live with the Champions, and she had changed during that time. She had grown a bit more confident in herself, her stuttering was close to being gone forever, she had gained weight and now looked a bit healthier, and she even had a steady job with good income. Alisa also took Nick's advice and had been attending therapy sessions in the quarter once a week, o help her deal with her past life on the streets of New Orleans, and various other traumas. Alisa felt like a whole new person, almost as though she were reborn and given a better life.

But despite all of these good things, there were still things that urked her. Argo saw her as some best friend, no where near a woman. Ennie refused to see her after his powers went haywire, and she had not spoken to him since. But her biggest urk was that she was still not an official member of the "Champions". She just felt like some live in mechanic at times, but there was no room for complaint. Despite these issues, her life was a 110% better than what it had been.

Dressed in a white tank top which was over a black bra, a pair of army green cargo pants with a black leather belt holding them up, and a pair of black army boots, Alisa was hard at work repairing a neglected Motorcycle engine. She could not believe how people would treat their property like shit. Then again, she came from nothing so when she got anything, she cherished and took care of it. Oh how she wished some of these bike owners could walk a mile in her shoes.

Brushing some of her long auburn hair out of her eyes, she attached a part to her wrench that would allow her to remove stripped bolts. Someone obviously tried to do a home-made repair on this bike, and just did more damage. Part of her wanted to call up the owner and yell at him to buy a new engine. The other part of her knew that with her mutant abilities, she could easily fix the engine... which would make a pretty penny for her, Nick, and the shop.

Turning to her little AM/FM radio she found, Alisa turned it to a rock station she had come to love, blasting "Unwritten Law's" song "Save Me" into the shop as she went back to work on the engine.

His smile doesn't disappear, anyway, so apparently she didn't get too crossed up. He meets her gaze directly, giving her a small nod. "I know you can handle yourself, you've come a long way from when we first met, and I'm proud of you. Cause you're absolutely right... I know some of what its like to come from where you did. And you do understand me, better than most folk. Thanks... its not an 'at least' - I'm glad to have you about."

This eased up her awkward feelings and made her smile as well. Chuckling, Alisa leaned in and gave Nick a peck on the cheek. "Glad to 'ave you too, Nick! An' t'anks... it's nice to know ah'm makin' good improvements!"

Alisa continued to smile as she slowly moved away from Nick and went back to her workbench. Her Sandwich was barely finished, and her soup was half gone as she went back to removing the stripped bolts on the Engine.

"Oh, Nick... remind me to yell at dis douche bag for bringin' me dis engine wit' dese bolts! Ah ain' NEVER 'ad a customer yet dat gives me dis piece o' crap!" She growled, getting another stripped bolt off. "Also... ah t'ink ah know what's wrong wit' it... mah powers detectin' a blockage in de engine... possibly a dead rat or sumt'ing gross... at least dat would explain de smell!"

She had to go back to work, as much as she wanted to sit next to Nick. Not that he would yell at her, but she as worried her actions would be too soon for him. Hell, even that kiss on the cheek felt too soon for him. He needed time to recover from Roxanne, right? He didn't need her moving in to take her place... then again, he never viewed her like a woman, no one really had. She grunted working on the final bolt.

Of course, he's noticed the changes in her. What kept him from viewing her as eligible had more to do with her needing some space, being emotionally fragile - she's not so much, not anymore. And he's noticed.

He may get a little more intent behind the peck on the cheek. Then she's back to work. He considers a moment, chewing on his sandwich. Then he sets it aside, and crouches next to her.

"Soon as you're certified, and as we build up a reputation, we'll get a better class of customer. Here, let me help you." he adds, getting to work next to her. He may not have her powers, but he's a good mechanic in his own right.

"Alright, alright... dere one more bolt to go before ah can open up de engine an' find out what de fuck is blockin' it." She had developed a little bit of a sailor mouth working in the shop, but it did not bother her that much. "An' on dat note... ah ain' reachin' in dere an' pullin' it out!"

Alisa blushed a little as Nick was right next to her, now. Why did this make her blush? I mean, it was Nick, her boss, a guy who just thought of her as a friend like Argo and every other man she knew. There was nothing to them... plus he just got over another Rider! She nearly dropped her wrench as she put too much thought into this.

"Oops! Sorry!" She managed to catch it before it fell, and then twirled it about her fingers. She finally got the last bolt off, and tossed it over towards the workbench.

He nods. "Don't worry, I got it. I'm sure I've done a lot worse." Like condemned people to damnation. Ok, so they deserved it, but still.

At the sudden movement, his hand shifts to try and catch the wrench, ending up on her hand.

"You ok?"

Her eyes were as wide as saucers as she felt his hand on her own. She did not know what to say, what to do. Her mind was just completely blank. God, why did she get like this when anyone kissed her or held her hand. All she could do was just look at Nick. It took her several moments before she could actually speak to him.

"Ah'm fine, Nick... don' worry about it. It was a tough bolt is all."

Ok, now that tone he knows.

He looks back at her, hand not moving from hers. "You don't sound fine. And I don't think its the bolt. Want to talk about it?"

"It's stupid, Nick." She gave him a shy smile, his hand still on hers, not moving or budging. "It's jus' ... ah don' know. Ah kinda like you. But it's you know, too soon for you to consider dat, an' well... ah should get back to work, an' finish eattin' ..." She was stammering, trying to hide the fact that she told Nick she "liked" him.

She did like him. He understood her, encouraged her, and despite his absence from the shop... he still seemed to be there. Truth be told, Alisa knew he would never go for a real relationship. He was a man on the move, a nomad of sorts. He did not need her to admit she had feelings for him. It was probably the last thing he needed to hear from her.

He seems a little surprised for a moment, then the gentle smile returns. She's not the girl she was two months ago - and she is cute. And they can work together. And sure, he knows he's probably screwing things up - but that's just his life.

"Let's get this bike fixed up, together. I'll get the rat out of there... then you go get cleaned up and dressed for a night out. I think we have some talking to do, and middle of a garage over a smelly, abused bike isn't the place to do it. Steak sound good?"

"Uhhh... Oui, oui steak sounds good. Never 'ad steak before." She continued to blush, just looking at his smile. Nick always had a great smile when he showed it."At least let me 'elp you get de rat out... ah mean... dat's gross. Probably covered who who knows what! Ah'll get de trashcan... so you don' gotta walk around wit it... den ah'll wash up."

Alisa reluctantly pulled her hand away from Nick's and went to go fetch the garbage can that rested by one of the work benches. She managed to carry it over with little to no problems, and open it up for Nick. She only prayed that whatever the hell he pulled out of that engine would not make her puke... and that it was a rat and nothing something even more gross.

"Should ah hum de funeral tune for dis?"

Nick, on the other hand, has no squeamishness, and any more, his gag reflex is about non-existent, so when he finds the dead oppossum, there's no hesitation in drawing it out and tossing it into the garbage. "Glad trash day is tomorrow." he says, before moving to wash up.

"With the blockage out of there, ought to be a pretty easy fix on the rest of it. Want to finish up?"
