Pauline had closed the door to her room before she got on the phone. If anyone but DJ came in, there'd be tiny blue hell to pay.

The staff at The Place took a while to decide if her mother was in a condition to be put on the phone, and reminded her to turn off any stereos that might be anywhere in the background.

And finally, Rachel Argosy was brought to the phone.

"Hello, Pauline," came the singsong voice over the telephone.
"Hello, Mom. Happy Mother's Day." It was such a bizarre thing to say. Rhapsody hadn't done any mothering since she was finally caught for good, before Pauline could clearly remember. But Pauline called every year.

"You were on TV, Pauline! I saw you! But they turned it off before there was a clip from your show. They always turn it off before the music starts." The voice gradually went from pleased to angry.
"Yes, Mom. I know. It isn't healthy. You know that."
"I could show them such things if I just had some music."
"I know, Mom. You try to have a good day, okay? I've... I've gotta go."
"Okay. Goodbye, Pauline."
"Goodbye, Mom."
