Checking on the home team
Commander Fontaine, Deputy Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., made the rounds when the special ops team came back in. After their last disastrous outing, she wanted to make sure they were still in one cohesive piece. The reports had been favorable.

She hadn't met the newest member yet, though she knew the contents of his file. She'd been the one to have it sent to Sammy for consideration. Her little gun nut, and Walker and Dugan, could always use someone with the ability to build a better gun.

Sammy's report had been terse but informative. The others' a little more informative. Landon was next on her list.

Sammy watched him with with curiosity, waiting to see if he would continue the thought, but accepted his reluctance when he didn't.

She smiled when the waitress returned with a pot of coffee and a cup and saucer. The smell of coffee perked her up enormously.

"I'll remember that if I'm ever in the area again."

Tech noted that the oddest (odd to him, anyway) things made Fury smile. It was also a nice expression on her face.

"See that you do. I daresay that you could even have a good time here. And there's swing dancing spots all along the way toward Bon Temps. They make for a good way to spend an evening." he says.

The waitress passes him his omelet and Tech eats, looking almost euphoric as he does.

"Omelets are the food of the gods." Tech says happily.

Sammy found his expression amusing. She'd only witnessed that sort of euphoria when it came to her friends and chocolate.

The roast beef sandwich was placed in front of her and she found she was right. There was gravy and it looked homemade. Her stomach rumbled a little and she didn't bother looking embarrassed by it.

"I don't know about a good time. I've forgotten what those are like off the firing range." It was an attempt at humor, but maybe it struck too close to home. "Do you go dancing a lot?"

Tech nods. "I should /go/ to the firing range more often." he tells her between bites. "No use in making guns if you can't use them."

Her second question earns her an enigmatic grin from the tech specialist.

"Not as much as I did when I was younger. Gran was a dancer in her youth and later an instructor. Lots of ballroom stuff, but she.taught me about Jazz and Swing dancing. My grandfather loved to dance with her." Tech says.

"I was...okay at it."

"Is that an okay as in you managed not to smash any toes, or an okay as in you have a closet full of trophies?" She tried the coffee. It wasn't her specialty blend, but it was hot, dark and delicious. "My dad taught me to jitterbug."

Tech looks down at his plate bashfully. "It's not a closet full...just a few."

A fully-adorned mantle is just a few, right?

However, his attention snaps back to her as she mentions the jitterbug and he laughs aloud.

"I would pay good money to see you jitterbug, Fury. I don't know why, but I think you're good at it." he says.

"Dancing is like fighting," Sammy said, a paraphrased quote coming from somewhere she couldn't quite remember. "If you can do one, it helps you do the other. It takes the same muscles and in many cases, the same movements. We'll use that when it's time to take you into the gym for training."

"Let's say I managed not to mash toes and tip him over when I jumped around." His omelet did look good, but her sandwich called. She relinquished the coffee cup long enough to pick up a sandwich half and swirl the end she intended to begin nibbling in the gravy.

"I certainly hope so. Perhaps I'll pick it up easily enough." Tech says, continuing to eat the large omelet. He hadn't had real gravy quite some time, and resolved to ask Gran to make pork chops while he was home.

"Well, that is a good start. I also cannot picture your father doing the jitterbug, so the two of you must really surprise people with dancing." he smiles.

"Oh, we didn't dance in public. Not like that." if Tech's grandmother cooked like this, Sammy knew she'd gain ten pounds before she got him back to the helicarrier. "It's not something the director of SHIELD wants to be photographed doing."

"Your image is really important to you." Tech says. It's not a question. He notices that Fury carries herself as if she is on display at all times, and he supposes that's true, considering who her father is.

"Well, at least you're going to some hole in the ground town where no one is going to know you from Eve." he says.

That was a curious comment from someone she didn't know very well. "Dad prefers to have some dignity in public. Mom has literally spent decades giving him some polish for the media. It's half the battle for people around you to believe you can do the job. I just make it a point not to do something I'd be ashamed to tell my parents."

She reached for her cup. "I'm looking forward to meeting your grandmother."

"I think I understand your meaning, and I feel the same way. I love my grandmother, but I often wonder how she must have felt, how she still feels, when she goes places in town. No one disrespects her, no one speaks against her, though she's not the kind of woman people line up to go against. She's a good, salt-of-the-earth person who just happened to have criminals for relations." Tech says sadly.

"She never came out and asked us what we did, and we never volunteered the information. I think it was a silent agreement between Jake and I that we didn't want to see the stern disapproval in her eyes at our choices. I also know she had to hear the worst rumors about what Jake did to people. I never understood why she didn't just throw us out. She was within her rights to." Tech says, seeming to ponder that himself, and unaware that what he'd just said to Fury might have come across as a dig rather than the simple observation it was meant as.

"I am certain she will like you, Fury. She has a good sense of people, and she doesn't gladly suffer fools. I see you have that in common with her." he says.

They were both younger siblings with brothers in prison, and trying somehow to be better and make up for the fact that circumstances put them in this position.

The thought was startling enough to flash through her expression.

"I'm certain your grandmother is proud that you're not in that life anymore."

He smiles at her, genuinely, which is a dazzling expression on his often-serious features.

"She was nervous about S.H.I.E.L.D. at first, but I think she's come around quite a bit. Though she says she will write to her Congressman if I'm not being fed well." Tech grins, finishing the rest of his food.

"Did you want to order dessert? Otherwise, I'll take care of the tab and we can be on our way." he says.

Sammy smiled back. "She wouldn't be the first one, and I will assure her that while home cooking can't be beaten, we're doing our best to make sure you don't go hungry."

She was full and had plenty to think about. She had been given glimpses of Tech that both intrigued and spoke to her.

"I'm full," she assured him. She was about to argue over who paid, but decided to give this one a pass. It was his turf and she was on her best behavior. "How far to your grandmother's from here?"

"About another two hours from here. Once we're inside town, we can stop at Wal-Mart and get a few things before we head to the house. I need to get a suitcase to carry the rest of my clothing and some tools." he says.

Tech, after a bit of work, will manage to get his wallet out and pay the bill, leaving the waitress a generous tip. He finishes the last of his juice, then stands up. Fury is good company and he feels as though he's learned a bit more about his leader than he knew before.

Each time he thinks he's peeled back something close to the final layer of her, he learns that he's barely scratched the surface. He finds that a challenge.

"Ready when you are." he says.

She rose from her chair and offered a hand. She realized when she did that she probably shouldn't have, but her protective streak could not be denied.

She covered by continuing the conversation. "C.B. The quote is 'Ready when you are, C.B.' I do need to pick up a few things. I have a list I made when you were visiting."

Tech takes the offered hand and follows her out, to the intrigued (and somewhat confused) expressions of the patrons of the restaurant. Of course, Tech doesn't notice. His focus is really only in one place.

"Ready when you are, C.B. Got it." Tech says.

"Next time, we'll be able to switch off driving, when my ribs aren't so sore." Tech tells her.

"I don't mind driving," she said, measuring his steps and noting he was moving better, but still seemed a little stiff. "I had to conquer it before it conquered me. I was getting a driving lesson when I manifested. True story."

Tech's eyebrows raise in astonishment at her admission.

"Were you scared? Did time stop all at once, or did it slow to a crawl and then stop?" he asks. He's been wondering something about her ability since he first learned what it was.

They reached the SUV and she hit the unlock button on the key fob.

"Actually, I had Dad's attention for a couple of hours and he decided it was time to learn. I was seventeen. A car came shooting out of an alley right in front of me and it was such a scare that my adrenaline went through the roof and everything stopped. Then it started again and I almost crashed into a lamppost. See, when it happened I took both hands off the wheel and tried to shake Dad to get him to respond."

"Your ability is activated by your adrenaline level?" Tech asks, intrigued. That certainly made sense, at least for a starting point, but how did one continue to activate those abilities after several times?

"That must have been terrifying for you. How did Colonel Fury react to your telling him of it? I've often wondered how people who are time-displaced resolve what happened to them in their minds." he says.

"Have you ever tried slow down time, rather than stop it?" he asks, an idea beginning to brew in the depths of his mind.

Scientific curiosity aside, Sammy opened his door and waited patiently for him to get into the vehicle.

"It was, and often. I had to learn how to trigger it without an adrenaline pump, and then learn how to control it. Dad didn't doubt me, but he didn't quite believe it either. I don't have the X-gene, I'm not a mutant. Since I was the only one experiencing it, it took a lot of testing to make true believers out of my parents.

"Then I had another set of problems to deal with. You know how it is when you're playing with a Jack in the Box? Once you know it's going to happen, then you're jacked up waiting for it. I was my own worst enemy with the adrenaline rushes."

Tech gets in and breathes a sigh of relief once he's at rest.

"Adrenaline can kick at the worst times, that much is certain." Tech agrees.

"You certainly seem to have it down cold now, from all the indicators I've seen during our work together. It has certainly been a learning experience working with you and your ability." he says.

Including a few embarrassing moments that didn't bear repeating.

She climbed in and turned the key in the ignition. "Thanks. Now, if I find out you're working on a device to keep me from slipping in and out, I will put itching powder in your sheets."
