Checking on the home team
Commander Fontaine, Deputy Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., made the rounds when the special ops team came back in. After their last disastrous outing, she wanted to make sure they were still in one cohesive piece. The reports had been favorable.

She hadn't met the newest member yet, though she knew the contents of his file. She'd been the one to have it sent to Sammy for consideration. Her little gun nut, and Walker and Dugan, could always use someone with the ability to build a better gun.

Sammy's report had been terse but informative. The others' a little more informative. Landon was next on her list.

"No /wonder/ you're all skin and bones, child. Takeout does not a proper meal make! Jason suffers from the same delusion. Well, I'm just going to have to set you two straight on a few things, starting tomorrow morning." Evelyn says.

"I hope you brought an appetite, Sam, because you're going to have to go home and tell your parents why you've gained a pound or two. Perhaps my grandson's luck in the kitchen will even improve and he'll cook for you all from time to time." she says, though she sounds less convinced of that particular statement.

	Sammy looked down at herself. Skin and bones? Well, she hadn't had much of an appetite since Qamar... But she didn't avoid food. She could always eat. And there was always coffee with cream and sugar. Those were calories. She should introduce Mrs. Landon to Jarvis. "Jason bragged about your cooking all the way here from lunch." Evelyn smiles, noting some similarities between this girl and her grandson.

"Waffles it is." she says, noting the items she'd need for tomorrow morning in her mind. Of course, she had them all, and if she was missing something, she'd send Jason out for it in the morning before Sam was up.

"Well, Sam, it's been great talking to you, but this old lady needs to get to bed. Will you tell Jason to lock up if you seem him before you turn in, please?" she asks.

	Several minutes after Evelyn heads upstairs for the night, Tech returns, a favoring his ribs a bit, but not looking too terrible. "Oh, Fury, you're up." he says, poking his head into the kitchen before walking in and sitting down at the table. "I hope you and Gran weren't too bored without me." he smirks. "How's the coffee?" Sammy was leaning back in the kitchen chair with the cup in both hands as she mulled over the conversation with Evelyn. The woman was as cryptic as Tech on some things. All in all, she quite liked the older woman, and would seriously consider introducing her to Jarvis if she ever visited New York.

She looked up when he entered the kitchen. "Of course I'm still up. It's pretty early for us city girls. I had a lovely chat with your grandmother."

Oh /that/ couldn't be good.

"You city slickers do keep odd hours." Tech grins.

"Thank you for keeping her company, Fury. You didn't have to, but it's appreciated. Gran's as shoot-from-the-hip as you can get around here, short of actually shooting someone." he says.

"I hope she didn't grill you for info on S.H.I.E.L.D. and what we really do. I had to create a little bit of a story for her so she wouldn't worry." he says.

	"Oh no, I'll be fine." he says, a little too quickly. "Shouldn't take long at all. " He doesn't need Fury seeing him struggle; he should have asked Jess to help him while he was over there. He'll make it happen. "Um, let me get to that now." Tech says going to his room down the hall, past the staircase. Twenty-five minutes later, he still hasn't returned. 	While Sammy appreciated a man who's first instinct was to handle his own issues before asking for help, she had little patience for one who put himself through unnecessary trouble. "Thank you for not calling her in, Fury. I appreciate it." Tech says quietly. That would have been worse than the slight amount of shame he felt at letting Fury see him like this.

Once she was done, he slipped the dark blue shirt over his head and turned to face her...and found himself a little closer than he expected to. Her eyes are much more blue than they look at first glance.

"Besides, she'd kill me for keeping a pretty woman waiting." he says.

"Shall we go?" he asks, though he hasn't moved yet.
