Checking on the home team
Commander Fontaine, Deputy Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., made the rounds when the special ops team came back in. After their last disastrous outing, she wanted to make sure they were still in one cohesive piece. The reports had been favorable.

She hadn't met the newest member yet, though she knew the contents of his file. She'd been the one to have it sent to Sammy for consideration. Her little gun nut, and Walker and Dugan, could always use someone with the ability to build a better gun.

Sammy's report had been terse but informative. The others' a little more informative. Landon was next on her list.

	"Thank you, Sam, but...Ah would like it if you and Ah could just be Sam and Jason right now, before we have to go back to being Tech and Fury. Later on, Ah'm gonna need a good memory or two to keep me in my right mind, or as close as Ah can come." he says quietly. He gives her a half-smile and does something he's never done before. 	Sammy hugged him back, tight as she could. He was warm and tense, and she wanted to make it better for him. "It's going to be okay, you know," she said against his shoulder. "I'm not going to let anything happen to you, not even you." (Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

Jason hugs Sam tightly, memorizing the scent of her hair, the feel of her pressed against him. There's a part of him that screams to him to remember this, because someday, it won't be here.

"When you say it like that, Sam, Ah believe you. Even when Ah logically know that Ah shouldn't be countin' on you to save me from whatever may happen." he says.

Someday, she won't be around to watch him. She'll be the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and responsible for the welfare of thousands, no millions, of people. She won't have the time or the inclination to watch over a single R&D guy.

He lets go and looks Sam in the eyes for a moment, allowing himself to memorize the color, the expression on her face, the way contrast with her hair. He imagines that time stands still for a moment, while he does so, before letting Sam go and going to the passenger side to get in.

Sammy breathed through the next minute before she climbed in behind the wheel. Jason Landon had a lot to learn about How Things Were Done in her world. He had to believe her because she wasn't going to lose this fight. She'd get him into see Charles Xavier if she had to so he wouldn't lose himself.

She cleared her throat as they pulled back onto the road. "Did you see Jessica? How is the baby?"

"No, didn't see Jess. She's already back at home, but Ah did speak to Doctor Holland. He says that Jessica needs to stay on her vitamins and to take it easy. The baby seems like he's in good shape. It's a boy, Sam." Jason says. He was going to have a little nephew to teach about building things.

"She could probably make the car trip to Leavenworth, but Ah don't wanna risk it. When Ah go to talk to Jake for the last time...Ah'm gonna tell him then. Maybe that'll convince him to work as hard on his own behalf as Ah am." he tells Sam.

	She smiled at Jason's enthusiasm over a nephew. "Maybe he'll want to be a baseball pitcher, ever think about that?" she asked, teasing a little. "Or an astronaut." He sighs at his grandmother's request of Sam to get Jessica out, mainly because there's no mention of Gran going with her. "Okay. Ah think Ah can talk her into it. "I did ask your grandmother about going with her, but she wants to stay in her own home and sleep in her own bed. I can't fault that wish. I did say I'd have someone check on her." She'd twist arms on the Savoy detail if she had to and make sure someone kept an eye on the Landon place with the intention of helping Evelyn instead of surveillance.

"Okay, you're going to have to direct me to the nearest store to buy a swimsuit. And probably a few others things while I'm at it."

"This shouldn't take long. I'm not really much of a shopper. Mom's shopper usually has stuff sent to me unless it's something I need to try on. Took me forever to get her to realize my underwear didn't need little pink roses on them anymore."

Sammy winced and glanced at Jason beside her after she parked. "That falls under the category of too much information and I'm really sorry."

	Tech simply chuckles at the thought of an adult Sam with little pink roses on her underwear. Immediately after that, he stops chuckling, as the same thought arouses a different interest in him. "How about Ah come in and back you up? It would look weird if my girlfriend went to try on stuff and Ah sat in the car. Ah mean, isn't that what they make the chairs outside of dressin' rooms for?" Jason asks with a smile.

"And if you actually need an opinion, Ah'll try not to both the process too much." he tells her, unlocking his door to get out. He puts on his coat and smooths down his shirt, before heading to the door of the establishment.

"Ladies first." he says.

"Well I don't know," she said, going through the door first and waiting for him to take his hand again. Her fingers slid between his in a familiar motion. "I had one boyfriend and we shared study notes. He didn't shop with me."

She looked around as they passed through the racks. "Being late in the year, the choice is probably limited. I'm going to hope it doesn't cover my knees or come in lime green."

Tech is extremely curious about this former boyfriend and his status, but he doesn't press for more information. Sam will tell him what she wants to at the time of her choosing.

"Ah'm sure you can pick anything outta here and it would look great on you. Ah haven't seen you put anything on that doesn't flatter you." he says, looking around at the selection himself. "Ah bet you could even pull off lime green."

"Your tattoo is a secret. Noted. But your butt is fine." Tech says, off-handedly.

"Now, Ah will not make any concessions as to lookin' at your backside, Miss Fury, but Ah have it on good authority that it is indeed a fine backside." Tech says, following her to the Women's department.

He looks over several items as they make their way to the dressing room, looking at a few items that he thinks would look good on her while he waits.

"Uh huh." She shot him a look and went to a rack of the last offerings for summer near the fall fashions. She selected a couple she thought might fit.

After trying them on in the dressing room, she opted for the tan colored one piece, though it did cover more skin than she was used to hiding. IT probably wouldn't make much difference with her summer tan as she always managed to lose it in the winter anyway unless she was able to get away to a beach for some dedicated sunning.

She really loved to lay out in the sun.

She was about to change back into jeans and shirt when she decided to tweak Jason a little. She would have left <Tech alone, but Jason wanted to be normal, and he thought guys gave their opinions on their girls' outfits. She was on a mission to distract his mind until it was time to review the material Mrs. Landon had kept hidden since her husband was killed.

She pushed the curtain aside and walked barefoot toward the mirror set up just outside the dressing area. The tan color was a few shades darker than her skin tone. The top didn't show as much cleavage as her normal choice would, and the bottom was cut high on the thighs to show the skin paler at the hip where it would normally be covered. The back dipped in a vee to just below her natural waist.

Sammy turned in circle to see it at all angles, lifting her hair out of the way to get a good look over her shoulder at herself in the glass. The tattoo set on the upper portion of her hip from behind was hidden by the extra fabric.

"Well?"

If Sam was searching for a way to distract Jason's mind from anything that wasn't a thought of her, the expression on his face would answer her better than any words ever could.

To Jason's credit, though, he did try.

After several attempts to get past the world "well", the mixed expression of approval, pride and desire becomes a cat-ate-the-canary smile. Jason Landon would have felt this way if it had just been the two of them, but the added surprise of a stockboy crashing his cart into a pillar at the sight of Sam in a bathing suit only made the smile bigger.

He kept looking for words, but his eyes would speak volumes. He couldn't stop looking at her.

"Ah think you should buy that one and we should go to the pond ASAP. In fact, you get Ah'll just go throw some money at the cashier and Ah'll come back and carry you out. Ah'll even drive." he says.

"You look great, Sam." Jason says, though the word he'd really like to use is hot but he is a gentleman. Mostly.

He's still staring as though he's debating whether or not it would be improper to pounce upon her right now.

"Ah should get to that throwing money at the cashier bit, if that's the one you like." he offers.

"Thank you for the popular vote." She grinned at Jason over her shoulder and shook her hair out. It would do to cool off in and get some air. Best of all, the bleak look in Jason's eyes after the hospital was gone. "I can't get this reaction in New York. Okay, I'll change and pay for it, and you sit tight. Won't take a minute."

She dashed back into the dressing room and re-emerged a few minutes later fully dressed and carrying the approved bathing suit. "I don't suppose they have some sunscreen here. You did say there's a drugstore down the block?"

"Do they not have beaches in New York?" Jason asks. He's pretty sure Sam's caused car crashes or people to lose coordination when she's in minimal clothing. He can't imagine a situation where such doesn't happen.

"Yep, Mr. Philmeyer's Drug Store is right down the street. We can get just about anything else you need there." Jason says.

"Looks like you have an admirer." Jason smirks, nodding at the stockboy who is STILL staring at Sam, even as he tries to pick up all of the stuff he dropped.

"I'm the oddity. He'll be fine when the next cheerleader comes in for a prom dress."

At the register, she put the suit on the counter along with her wallet to rearrange the her jacket to lay flat over the gun and harness. When the clerk didn't make a move, she looked up to see the older woman staring at the slight bulge.

She smiled at the older women when her eyes finally looked up. Without a word, the item was rung up and Sammy was holding out her credit card and drivers' license.

"Next stop, sunscreen and then we're in the water. Do I need to ask if there are things in the water that bite?"
