Not Exactly the Day Envisioned
Occasional doubts about his relationship aside--a small part of her would have preferred things be, well, smaller, really, but hey, Starks did things big--Steve truly loved his girlfriend.  Which meant that he absolutely had to make her birthday as special as he possibly could.  He had scrimped and saved from his Avengers salary for several months in order to be able to take her out to dinner at what he had hoped was a nice enough restaurant.  Not his usual world, but hers.  A way to show her world was something he could at least try to operate in.

He studied the menu thoughtfully for a moment, before looking over to her.  "You look beautiful."

The thing about Steve was, well, most people assumed that if you took away his bow and arrows, then there wasn't much he could do. They ignored the sword, the staffs, the boomerangs, because he did, primarily, make use of the arrows. What they ignored was the fact that he had been trained by numerous Avengers, to be far more than that. To be his own weapon.

Because as they guy with no powers, and not even the little extra residual super-soldier formula, he needed every edge he could get.

He stopped, slid his foot back, and in one easy motion, brought it between the nearest guard's legs, even as he brought his hands down on the back of the falling guy's neck.

Anya wasn't exactly a slouch without her armor. When one was the child of the Black Widow, one learned hand to hand combat along with fashion and how to shoot a gun.

Anya ducked and turned, sending an elbow into the guy of the agent next to her. She followed up by putting her hands on the back of the doubled over man's head and brought a knee up to meet his face.

That took care of both the guards, and for the moment, at least, they were alone in the corridor.

"Well," he said, "that's as far as my plan went. Breaking in's a lot easier than out."

"The good thing," Anya said as she grabbed Steve's hand and started running down the hall. "Is that the EM fields aren't present when they move us."

They rounded the corner and Anya placed her palm on a scanner and opened a door. She pulled Steve inside and the door shut behind them.

"I should be able to access their computer system, find out where we are and clear us a path out of here." Luckily enough there was a computer access panel in the room they were in. Anya got to work.

Steve paced while Anya worked. The charges were insane. Not that there wasn't a small part of him could have murdered the Mandarin, but he believed he would have stopped himself, if it had ever come to that. Despite being denied his own chance at revenge, he considered himself lucky he hadn't had to find out.

All of which left the question, what was going on?

Anya quickly did what she needed to do. They were aboard the Helicarrier which made getting out a little more difficult, but not impossible.

She disabled the security cameras from here to the hangar bay. They could grab a hovercar and get the hell out of here.

"We're all set. We have a clear path to the hangar bay. We should grab a weapon on our way."

He nodded. "Good job," he said. "Let's move. Sooner we get out of here, the sooner we can get some real answers."

"Please. This was nothing. If I had time I'd unleash a nasty little computer virus," Anya said. "Let's go." She opened the door and checked to see if the coast was clear.

Fortunately for them, it was. The corridors were mercifully empty, until they came to the hangar, which was currently filled with guards and mechanics.

Steve pressed up flat against the wall, craning his head around to look. He reached into his inside jacket pocket. Some how, they'd managed to miss it when they were searching him. An explosive arrow-head.

"One shot at this," he said. "I throw it, make a boom, and we run for a car."

"Got it," Anya said and was ready to run. There was a Porsche not too far away. Thankfully it was Stark Tec and Anya knew she could get it started and out of here.

Steve armed the arrowhead, counted to three, and threw it. "Go!" he told Anya, already in motion.

Two seconds later, the arrowhead exploded.

Anya ran when he said go. She reached the Porsche and put her hand on the electronic lock. The lock clicked open and she opened the door. As soon as she sat down she put her hands on the steering column. Thankfully the cars had been designed and built by Stark Inc so she knew the systems. A moment later the engine came to life and started purring.

"Come on!" yelled to Steve as she pulled the door close.

Anya used the car's controls to open the hangar door and then stomped on the accelerator. There was a screeching of tires and possibly some smoke. The car launched forward.

Steve let out a breathe as the adrenaline started leaving his body, once they were safely airborne and out of the hangar. Too much confusion and Anya's brief scramble of security had given them just enough of an exit to work with.

"We need to see what happened for ourselves," he reflected, trying to think. "Figure out what the hell is going on."

Anya nodded. "Agreed. Thankfully Mom still has a safehouse or two in the city and each of them have access to SHIELD's computers. I can hack in and see what they know about all of this."

The car started to fall for a few seconds before the flight mode kicked in. She put the throttle to the max and headed down into the concrete jungle of New York's skyscrapers.

"Then we can see what we're going to do next. I'm going to need my armor," she said and was already sending the commands to remotely activate it.

"I'll see what I can do," she said and sent commands to the armor to grab Steve's equipment. "I know Mom has /stuff/ at the safehouse."

Once they were on the ground, Anya parked the car on a random street and they got out and made their way to the subway. Even though Anya disabled the tracking device on the car, she wasn't going to take any chances. They rode a few of the subway lines, took a bus or two and when Anya was confident they weren't being followed, she took them to the safehouse.

The small one bedroom apartment wasn't much, but it had the things they would need. Once inside, she booted up the computer and started the program that would bounce the connection all over the world. Anyone trying to trace it would have a very long trail to follow. She turned on the monitors that showed feeds of outside and all around the building, including the roof.

She turned to Steve. "First thing's first. We need to change the way we look. There's clothes in the bedroom for you to change into." They were always kept there for Misha just in case. "And...." She went to the bathroom and pulled out two boxes of hair dye from under the sink. She tossed the box of dark brown to Steve. "Use that. I'll get the other stuff we'll need."

She came out of the bathroom and found the hidden latch to release part of the far wall. It slid open and revealed an armory. There were guns of all sizes and makes with ammo, a crossbow and arrows, knives, grenades, grappling gun or two and even a spare set of Mom's Widow's Bite bracelets. Along with C4 and detonators of course.

"I don't know if I should be impressed or worried," Anya said as she stared at the wall for a moment. The she opened a drawer at the desk and pulled out a neatly stacked and wrapped wad of cash, two passports and two cell phones. "Only use the phone once and then toss it away," she instructed.

Some kids' Mom's took them the playground. Hers took her and her brother to safehouses to show them where they were, what was in them and what to do if they ever needed to go to ground.

Color Steve extremely impressed. He never would have thought of... well, any of this stuff. And while he too, had a spy parent, he had expressed little interest in that aspect of things. It wasn't how things were done. You stayed above board, you played in the spotlight, and you never did dirty work.

A change of clothes and a dye job later (combined with a pair of sunglasses) and he looked at least something like a new man. It probably wouldn't fool many for long, but it might give him a little bit of an edge.

He surveyed the weaponry with a look that was half awe, half disgust. "Anything here not designed to kill people?"

"I would say the microwave, but then again if I touch it, it can turn into a deadly weapon."

Anya was now a brunette as well and was sporting a change of clothes. "Mom...Mom lives...lived in a dangerous world. Spooks need to be prepared for just about anything and be able to adjust to changing situations. She's been wanted by governments all around the world at different times, including our own."

Anya shrugged. It was just a fact of her mother's life. It was dark, secretive and dangerous. How things were in her mother's life had been explained at a very early age and each time Natasha left to go to work when Anya was a kid, a part of her always wondered if she would see her mother again. Anya had always been happy to see her mother come home and Anya appreciated every second she got with her mother.

Mom was a working mom, she just had a very dangerous job. Anya had always been proud of her.

Anya grabbed two pistols and ammo and placed them on the desk. She also grabbed the Widow's Bite for a non-lethal method. "There may be a tranq gun," Anya said as she looked at the wall of weapons. "Try that one on the far right."

"You know, my mom was a spy too," Steve said. Granted, spy/super-hero friction, along with pure stupidity, had nearly destroyed his parents marriage--he didn't even know the whole story there--but ultimately, his was the world of the super-hero.

"But not exactly the same kind as yours," he eventually conceded.

He took the tranq gun, and the crossbow. At least with arrows and his ability to aim, he could easily shoot to disable.

"Okay, so we need to see for ourselves this "attack" they're going on about."

"Right. And we can't stay here that long. SHIELD doesn't know about this place, but I'm sure they'll find it soon."

Anya went over to the computer and started typing. In a minute she had the surveillance footage of the attack playing on the screen. "Come see."

The video was... interesting, to say the least. In the hallway outside the cell, there was a brief flicker of light and then a figure in black and dark purple, bits of it cloth, bits of it armor, his face hidden behind a mask, appeared.

The figure took out the guards easily with some kind of beam weapons, though it didn't look like he had killed either. Another beam of some kind--all the beams seemed be coming from the figure's knuckles, Steve noticed--destroyed the cell door. The figure fired inside, but automatic weapons fire on him, from further guards, ruined his aim and made the shot go wild.

The figure turned, and it was clear he was wearing what looked like a chestplate with an arc reactor of some kind in the center. He pointed, unleashing beams of force and heat from his hands. But a stray shot struck the chestplate, sending sparks flying and briefly dropping the figure to its knees, before it used jet boots to rocket through the roof.

Steve's mouth was hanging open. "Well. That looked like Stark-tech to me. Some of it, anyway."

He nodded. "I recognized a couple of those moves. Just like mine."

Forensics would report on any number of factors, including biometric scanning, which matched up to Steve exactly. Other files compared to known footage and records SHIELD had on him. Some of the things the Steve in the footage did were better than his average levels, some worse.

They also had some good readings off the armor itself.

"Not all those blasts looked like Stark-weaponry though. But that could just mean it didn't come from here. Think maybe we can track any of the energy signatures?"
