A Strange Quest
Quinn had been thinking about the leprechaun incident and had a feeling it wouldn't be the last time he saw the little annoy creatures. Quinn's magic hadn't been effective and he had to know what to do the next time they came around. Maybe there was a spell or something that would work against them and their magic.

Quinn had to go to the one person who would know about this kind of stuff.

He teleported to 177A Bleecker Street in New York only to find it empty. He wondered where Dr. Strange was.

There was one person who may know. Quinn teleported out to the West Coast and arrived at the front gate of the Defenders.

The Hood couldn't help herself. She walks up behind tall, blond and muscular and decides to start a conversation.

"So. What are you in for?" she says in her discordant voice.

Dawn jerked and nearly dropped her coffee. As it was, some spilled out the top.

"I'm, ah, the mortal avatar of an Asgardian sorceress," she said. "Or something. But I got the invite, so I came, even though I'd be really bad at the job. And don't know nearly enough about magic to judge anything."

Babbling again. Great.

She's...so cute! She reminds Melissa of both May and Kelly...if the two were rolled into one, completely devoid of socialization and drop-dead gorgeous.

Nine out of ten voices in my head say I'd Hit That.

"That's...kind of hot, the whole avatar thing." Melissa says. If she was painted blue...

The Hood forces her brain to come out of the gutter and talk to the girl like a normal person. She looks up the woman who has at least six inches on her and smiles in the shadows of her hood, those red eyes taking on an amused stare.

"Don't sell yourself short, Dawn. You got invited to this mystic shindig because you might be able to do the job. You obviously know /something/ or you wouldn't be here.

Mages are a lot like sharks. They smell blood in the water and you're bleedin' all over the place. You let them get a scent and they'll try to eat you alive. In fact, most people are like that." Melissa says.

"What do you do for a living, girl?" she asks.

Dawn missed a lot of the subtext there, which was good, because it would probably send her into another round of babbling.

"It's... made life interesting," Dawn reflected. She wasn't sure if it was interesting in the good way or interesting in the "may you live in interesting times" Chinese curse sort of way. On the one hand, she had made some pretty awesome friends. On the other hand, she'd nearly died several times.

She shook her head. "I've picked up a few tricks on my own, but most of what I know was downloaded straight into my head by magic. I know that I know it, but I don't know how I know it. It's very confusing."

"I'm a librarian, actually," she said. "Sometimes research assistant."

Hm. If that thing with Billy Connors doesn't pan out, she might have to introduce May to this girl. Melissa files this away for future pairings.

"Librarian is cool. I kill people." the Hood says, looking at Dawn.

Two seconds go by. Then three. Four seconds. Five.

"HAHAHAHA! Just kidding! You should see the look on your face, blondie!" the Hood grins under the cowl.

"No, really. I'm a freelance Wealth Redistribution Specialist and LifeStyle Planner in my day job. The magic thing helps with both." she chuckles.

"We could work together sometime, if you're interested. You ever need some mystic back-up, feel free to call me." she says.

Okay, heart? You can start now, Dawn thought. This time she really had spilled her coffee. She gave it a frustrated glare and magicked it away, before conjuring herself a new one. This one had a Starbucks logo on the cup. Yeah, her conjurings definitely came from somewhere.

"I work with Marlow a lot," she said. "We're on the same team. The Defenders. With some Asgardians and a Celt god and a demigod and some other people. But yeah, sure. Help's always good."

Even if the girl was giving her the serious creeps.

Yes, this one is definitely cute. Melissa thinks she will keep her. She found even more endearing that the girl seemed to have bought the whole "Freelance Wealth Distribution" line.

Kelly was right; if people aren't in The Life, they usually have no clue what that really means.

"Good to know, Dawn Roberts. I'll look you up some time when I need some extra mystic firepower. Do you know anyone else besides Marlow here? Like Hat Boy or James Bond over there?" she asks.

Look up gullible in the dictionary, there's probably a picture of Dawn. Or naive. She's too new to the super-person game to have developed the proper instincts about it.

She shook her head. "I think I've seen that Akilah and Daniel in some newspapers about the Avengers, but that's pretty much it."

Melissa does some looking around and wonders if everyone here is a goodie-goodie with delusions of saving the world. Sure, she just joined the Thunderbolts, but that's just a cover until she and Kelly can get the hell out of there.

"Yeah, the Wakandan Princess seems about as fun as a empty tupperware at a potluck and I don't know the other guy." she says.

"If you were the Vishanti and had to pick someone here for the role of Sorcerer or Sorceress Supreme, who would you pick?" she asks.

Dawn was surprised that anyone was actually and truly interested in her opinion on the matter at hand (even in spite of the invite), but did take a moment to gather her thoughts.

"Marlow, probably. She's got a good handle on magic, as far as I can tell. And she knows about this stuff. She recognized the fire-headed demon guy the Defenders fought once. Dorm... something or other."

"Dormammu." Melissa says instantly. She's well aware of the demon Dawn describes.

"Didn't know you guys tangled with him. He's in the heavyweight division as far as demons go. The next Sorcerer Supreme has to be ready to handle him and anyone else that walks into this dimension uninvited." Melissa says.

"What do you think about what Hat Boy over there said? You think we'd be better off with or without a Sorcerer Supreme? Would you risk yourself to in after Strange if you had to?" she asks.

"Well, I didn't do much," Dawn said. She didn't bother explaining that she'd had a panic attack, nearly died, and only gotten back into the fight by fully syncing her spirit with that of Asleif Thorsdottir.

She shook her head. "I really don't know. I'm not even sure I knew there was such a thing as a Sorcerer Supreme before today, let alone what one did. But, ah, if we have one, it's probably a pretty important thing. But then again, what if this Doctor Strange guy comes back tomorrow? Does he get the job back? Or do we just give him a gold watch, a handshake, and go with the new guy?"

She swallowed nervously. "But, ah, if we had to, I think I would. I'm pretty new at this magical thing... but yeah. I would. I mean, it sounds like this Strange guy's worth a whole lot more than me."

Though she'd be scared out of her mind and probably not achieve anything. "But if it meant the world was safer because of what I did... yeah."

The lack of confidence was definitely a downer, but Melissa is sure there's a warrior-babe in Dawn just looking for a reason to get out. She's a /librarian/, right? They're like, the poster children for closet naughtiness.

"What scares you so much, Dawnnie? Is it the hood? Or is it just the people here? You're as good as every one of them, I bet. This whole mysticism bit...it's intimidating at first. It's scary as all hell because you don't know what's around the next corner. Last week, it was a run-of-the-mill ghost who just need a little help getting back to the afterlife.

This week, it's probably an imp causing trouble. Next week, it's a demon lord who wants to devour your firstborn for crossing it. The point is, you can't let 'em see you sweat. You take the punches and roll with them. Every now and then, you'll get some freak that magic doesn't really help with. That's when you make sure you've got a good knife or gun handy to help said person with their breathing problems." Melisa tells her.

"Do you know how to use a gun?" Hood asks.

Dawn shook her head. "It all pretty much scares me. Magic's gotten me killed, more or less, twice."

Once when those cultists had tried to sacrifice her and Asleif had accidentally incinerated her with magical blowback, and one when she'd been zapped by Dormamu.

She got better.

"I used to be normal. And then all of sudden, I'm dealing with all this craziness, and Asgardians, who are awesome, but are kinda crazy to and I'm pretty sure that the world could have ended with Dormamu and the big flaming Norse monster and..."

she stopped herself. Babbling again.

"But no, I don't know how to use a gun." Granted, she could throw a car around if she had to, so between that and magic, not much need.

"You look like you got better. Way better." the Hood says, giving Dawn the once over. "I know what you mean. My old man got in bad with a demon and it caught up with him. But the demon tortured my big sister first, as a lesson." she says.

"You're cute when you babble, but you should learn to use a gun. Never know when magic might not be the solution to everything."

Dawn was barely used to the kind of attention her new physical attributes brought her from men, let alone receiving much attention from women.

"That's... that's horrible," she said quietly. "I'm sorry."

She swallowed. "Maybe. I've got a couple Asgardians teaching me how to fight, if that's worth anything."

She knew the others didn't trust this one, and her own sense of creepy was going off... but this was an oddly human moment here.

"I just don't want to see what happened to either of us happen to anyone else."

"My old man always told me that there were two kinds of people in life, Dawn: victims and perpetrators. If you don't want to be the first, you better get damn good at bein' the second." Hood says, looking up at Dawn with those crimson eyes hidden inside the shadows of the cloak.

"I'm here because I'm never gonna be anyone's victim again, or let someone choose how I live. Everyone here has a different reason they won't or can't do the job and that's fine. I just hope they aren't so focused on my appearance that they miss the fact that I'm willin' to step up when everyone else is steppin' back." she finishes.

"Enjoy your coffee, hottie." the Hood says, going back to her corner.

A life view Dawn immensely disagreed with, though she admitted to herself that she'd spent entirely too much time as the victim. She needed to take charge of her life. She was on the damn council of magical... people on Earth here. Time to put on her big girl panties.

Weird. There was something not right about the Hood, and yet... Dawn wondered if anyone else had ever actually sit back and listened to her before.

Dawn was about to ask if she'd wanted some, before she'd walked off.

Well.

She had a lot to think about.
