Resident...Evil?
Despite the garbage that went down earlier in the week, Melissa found herself a happier camper today. The Boss Man's check cleared; she and Kelly were now much more financially solvent. After a call to her lawyer, Diane, to get bills and things paid, Mel goes downstairs to have herself a victory dance, or as they're called, a beer. Never mind that it's early in the morning and that she hasn't hand breakfast, which also sounds like a good idea, Mel just wants to enjoy having her money, her girl, her magic and her guns.

Kelly was right about this whole mercenary gig; it paid dividends, even if being shot at and nearly killed by life-draining nutjobs was part of the job. They'd also done the world a favor by removing Benedict Kine's sorry self from it, and Mel figured they deserved medal for that. Instead, they got hefty-paychecks. Maybe she'd /buy/ herself a medal.

She walks into the kitchen, going through the cupboards to see if there's any eggs to make an omelet. If there is bacon, it's left untouched.

Bacon is against her personal religion.

"You work a lot. You know what they say about all work and no play." Melissa says.

"I come from a long line of workaholics," Anya said as she stood up to refill her cup. "We work hard and we play hard."

"Yeah, I know what you mean. My grandfather was one, and so were both of my parents. My big sister was, too." Melissa says.

"Some apples never fall from the branch, let alone roll away from the tree." she grins.

"My mother accuses of my father of having had a cloning project going on when she had me."

Anya shrugged.

"I think it's half genetics and half bad influences. They taught me that if I wanted something I had to work for it. I know not a lot of people would believe that, but I didn't have everything just handed to me."

"I'll admit, I'm one of those people who really did think that. My mother told me she met your old man once. Lookin' at the papers and things, a case /could/ be made that you and him get by on your good looks alone. My Ma was a good judge of character, though, and she told me that Tony Stark earned the stuff he had, just like my dad did." Melissa says, taking a bite of a pastry.

"So I could believe he taught somethin' like that to a kid. Having a girl instead of a boy must have made him nuts, though, huh?" Melissa chuckles.

"Did the same to my old man, that. Having two girls made him really crazy." she says.

"Unfortunately people only know what they see in the papers. Spoiled rich kid. What they don't see is that I have a full coarse load, I do this," she said and made a small wave of her hand, "and in the summer and over holiday breaks I work at the company. I would work during school, but my father said I have to try to be a normal teenager. As if /that/ could ever happen."

"I don't think so," Anya said. Though the thoughts of Dad preferring a boy over a girl had been lingering her whole life. "I think he was probably glad I was a girl on some level. I think our relationship is as strong as it is because I am a girl."

Anya smiled. "Though he will have a son in a month or so. So he'll have one of each."

"You said you have a sister. Are you close to her? By the way if I'm prying just tell me to back off."

"Yeah, I think the same thing was true for my old man and me. My sister's mother took her from him when he was a kid, so when my mom ended up with me, he took a hard look at his life and made some choices." Melissa says.

"He chose my and me over work and he'd worked to get to where he was his whole life." Melissa says. As proud as she was of her old man, she couldn't help but wonder if he thought it was worth the risk after she died.

"Big sisters are special, Red. Pretty sure that kid will think you made the world and everything in it soon enough." she smiles.

"We were close. We're not these days. She lives in New York and we don't get to talk much." Melissa says, thinking about going to see Bree again now that guilt had kicked in. It was likely that Bree didn't even know she was gone, but Melissa liked to think that her sister noticed and missed her at times.

Kelly stumbles downstairs in Hello Kitty lounge pants and an oversized t-shirt reading 'Violence is Not the Answer; I Got it Wrong On Purpose'

She pours herself an extra large mug of coffee and buries it under a ridiculous amount of cream and sugar, then stumbles over and flops down on Mel's lap.

"M'rn'ng."

"Morning," Anya said between sips of coffee.

"My dad did sort of the same. He grew up and got responsible when I came along. He told me once that everything in his world had to adjust because I was there. I was the person he had been making the world better for."

Anya smiled. "He'll probably be a dork like my other brothers, but I will be the cool sibling. The others wouldn't know cool unless it knocked them over and stood on them." She had to laugh a little.

"I go to New York regularly. You're always welcome to tag along. It's good to see family."

"Don't mind Grumpy here. Humanity will set in a soon as she's had three or so cups of Demon Blood." Mel says, stroking Kelly's hair as she flops down. Poor baby.

"I might take you up on that offer sometime, Red. I have a friend in New York I could see while I'm there." Melissa says, not discussing the topic of family any longer. She's never mentioned Bree to Kelly, for what she thinks are good reasons.

"You do any work on guns, Red?" Mel asks out of curiosity.

The g-word perks Kelly up immediately. She's usually high energy anyway, so a little bit of her sugar with a little bit of coffee combined with her favorite word gets her somewhat back on track.

"Ooohhh, so we're on warm and fuzzy family topics? Cool." She hasn't done anything more family-related than introducing Mel to her dad's head - which says everything one needs to know about her family.
"Oh, Mel, dad says hi from the bowling alley. He sent a card through the shoe rack attendant and wants to know when I'm going to come get him."

"Most of my family is like that. You don't get in between Mom and the coffeepot in the mornings."

"Define work," Anya said. "I know how to use them, clean them, put them together, fix them, and identify them but I don't make any."

"As much as I wanna say soon, I don't think your dad is going to fit in around here, babe. Hell, I don't think we really fit in around here, what with all the stares Bug Babe gives us." Melissa says. That girl Sydney is pretty wacky, but she's also a complete buzzkill.

"Speaking of family, Kelly, my Uncle Clint and Cousin Jack are coming up from Texas along with the family for my early birthday party. They said they're finally okay with meeting you. It's a costume party, though, so we need to go shopping." Melissa says.

Translation: Gun shipment with buyers in town, good stuff. Wear gear.

Melissa looks back to Anya. "Oh, too bad about not making them. But you could make them better? I'm thinking about switching my current ones out for something with a bit more stopping power, but I'm not sure yet." she says. Besides, her first guns had been a pain to enchant and she'd have to scare up and kill another demon for part of the ritual.

Maybe Dawn would help.

Kelly nods thoughtfully. "You're probably right. I'll tell the bowling alley they can keep him for a while and have someone pick him up when they get around to it. I guess the attendants were a little wierded out, but they have good nachos, so its ok now." she muses aloud.

"Got it, costume party, I'll dress for the occas..."

She blinks. "Ooohhhh, working on guns... /you're/ the chick with the power armor. That's hot."

Sydney has made little secret of her general distrust of the two newest house guests. That they had yet to receive a satisfactory explanation for why they had been there or why the other people had been attacking them...

To say nothing of the sheer amount of guns and general bad vibe she got off of them. The one with the cape might have been okay. But the other one was just plain not right. She'd been keeping her door well locked at night.

However briefly, she had been a super-villain. She knew how to recognize certain kinds of signs. Maybe even the signs of people who enjoyed hurting people a little too much.

She'd spent the morning in the lab, on a couple of freelance engineering consulting jobs, paid under the table, but for people who checked out. Now, however, her system demanded food--mostly sugar, but some protein too.

She saw Anya first. "There any frozen waffles left?"

"Hey, Bug Babe! Come to the dark side. We have coffee and pastries." Melissa says, smiling at Sydney. That smile could be anything from a subtle come-on to an outright threat.

"You look chipper this morning. Have any good wood lately?" Melissa asks.

Anya groaned at the pun. "There may be some in the freezer. You know I don't go anywhere near food that has to be cooked." Though Anya has eaten food cold or mostly frozen before.

Sydney fought down her anger, including a small voice inside her that was telling her to bite off Mel's head and lay eggs in her stomach.

Dammit. Pastries. So much sugar...

No.

She held Mel's stare however. "Afraid not. I've got standards."

The offer to cook, however, surprised her.

"Er... thanks?"

Melissa just watches Sydney as she responds, almost hoping the girl gets angry enough to flip out. Maybe she'll tell her to buzzzz off. That would make Mel laugh. Loudly.

She gives her credit for not rising to the bait, though.

"Impressive. The Force is strong with you, young Skywalker...but you are not a Jedi yet." Melissa teases, biting into her pastry.

"No problem." Kelly responds to Sydney, going to town with a cutting knife, hacking up some sausage and browning it before blending eggs and cream cheese, the knife flying across the cutting board almost too fast to track as she gets going on extra-light sausage scrambles on toast to go with the pastries. She doesn't bother using a spatula, speeding up the process all the more by handling everything with her hands and a fork to do the blending, the small burns on her fingertips from working with a pan filled with sausage grease disappearing almost as fast as they appear.

"Who wants scrambles? And by the way, you guys have this place really well stocked."

"Sure," Sydney said, maybe in spite of herself. She was hungry. "Just add some powered sugar to mine."

She didn't really think she was wrong here. Certainly... she understood a second chance. She was living one. But what she'd done and what she suspected the other two may have were a fairly vast gulf.

No real option but to wait and see. Right now, living under the auspicious of Stark was about the only thing that kept SWORD or SHIELD from capturing and dissecting her ass.

"Depends," Anya answered. "Sometimes it can be quiet for awhile and other times it can be something just about every day. It goes in cycles."
