Atlantis - The Last Stand
Mason was wearing two parkas as he and Marrina waited at the set coordinates on the Nova Scotia shoreline. An official envoy from Atlantis was supposed to pick them up here. He was holding her hand, and what of his face could be seen between his scarf and his hat looked worried. He nodded to her.

"Just in case I get killed..." He squeezed her hand. "I love you. And you were worth it."

Vishin is with the guards, spreading his arms wide.

"Princess Marrina... Atlantis is most pleased to bring one of it's favored daughters home." he grins deviously, then gestures towards the craft.

Something about this whole thing definitely set her on edge, but she couldn't tell what.

"I am pleased to accept the offer of transportation for myself and my chosen champion," she said.

She gave Mason a small tug, and started them toward the ship.

Mason nods and follows along.

"I trust," the vizier continues, even as he steps aside, "--that you have brought the death waiver, with your mark? It would, of course, be most unseemly if Lord Kerouac's family sought punitive measure in the highly unlikely event of his death. It is only a measure to protect you, Mister Jeffries." He gives a very formal, very insincere, sullen look.

Mason tenses, and reaches inside his coat, handing over the parchment. "I've signed it."

Vishin inspects the form and nods. "All is in order then." He signals to the guards, who form a tight semi-circle behind Mason and Marrina as they all re-board the craft.

Hours later, they arrive at Atlantis. The craft empties into an airlock, a dome used for diplomatic meetings having been filled with air. There are throngs of nobles and guards lining the walkways, leading to an arena with lavish seating, and a box for the royal family.

"Princess, if you please. Your father and sister await you." Vishin gestures for them to part.

Mason looks at her. "I'll be fine."

She fought of the urge to frown.

"I know you're going to win this one, Mason. I believe in you."

Marrina nodded her thanks, and headed off to her family.

"So if shit starts going south, I have Charlie on hand to save Mason."

Kassi had made the trip special for this.

Mac was not happy about this. No matter how much the aristocracy had disapproved of Mom's marrying Dad, they'd all known better than to pull b.s. like this.

"Kassia." Namor says simply. His words should be enough of a warning.

Otherwise, he sits and watches the proceedings in silence, his expression betraying nothing.

"Hrmph." Kassi crossed her arms over her chest. "Charlie'd so eat the other guy. Death by kraken's totally a normal thing..."

She mumbled most of her commentary...and noticed that Mac's chair was really close to hers. Weird.

"For an aristocrat stereotype whose name is synonymous with 'unhappy idol of stoned posers,' the guy's hardly the worst we've got. Plays by the rules, at least."

Someone had been rearranging the chairs, Mac noticed. Weird.

Marrina was worried, clenching and unclenching her hands. She felt...a little funny, truthfully, the same way she had some of the other times she'd gone kind of berserk.

She tried to force herself to remain calm.

Kassia spotted her sister's 'must not go monster' routine out of the corner of her eye and immediately reached out with her mind.

Hey. It's cool. You're okay. Anything goes awry and Mac and I will make with the beatdown. It's fine.

Mason walked out into the middle of the arena. He'd taken his shoes off, and declined the weapons that had been offered him.

He looks around as some sort of ruckus seems to be starting at one end of the area, a particularly pale and... ominously statuesque Atlantean standing and having a cloak removed from him by attendants.

He curls up his face, then yells.

"My name is Mason Jeffries and I just want to say you should all be ashamed of yourselves by trying to force Marrina into a relationship she doesn't want, and I'd still think that even if I wasn't dating her!"

He's honest, but not terribly good with dramatics.

Mac watches. Incorrect interpretation of the Legal Stupidity aside, Mason seemed like a nice guy. Very...earnest.

That was not enough to impress Kerouac. He instead sneered at Mason as one would hope.

"I fight not for her hand now surface dweller, though she is worthy of any Atlantean to pursue. I fight for the honor of Atlantis. One such as you is not worthy of her. You do not understand our ways or our honor." He is staring at Mason coldly right now.

"You do not understand Atlantis. You would dishonor our noble Princess due to your naive innocence. I will not allow that Mason Jeffries of Alpha Flight. Be prepared to forfeit your life for her honor."

Namor keeps his feelings on Kerouac's words and Mason's sentiments to himself, though he agrees with both of them.

Privately.

Marrina felt her calm returning, her mercurial flesh and mind sliding back into place.

Thanks, sis.

She groaned inwardly at Mason's not-quite grasp of the situation, even as she was outwardly impressed by his courage and conviction. If she'd ever had any doubts--which she did not--that he loved her, they were gone now.

"Kick his ass, Mason," she said, quietly.

Mason just looks back flatly, as calm and cool as a glacier.

"I love her, I'm proud to fight for her, and her being a princess or AtlanteanPlodexwhatever or anything else like that has nothing to do with it.

Learn to deal."

He could throw back plenty about how Marrina hardly knows about their 'ways' herself, but he doesn't want to ruin the moment by chattering on as he knows he has a tendency to.

He spreads his feet and readies himself. "My name is Mason Jeffries, and I accept your challenge."

Vishin shakes his head and all but 'tut-tuts', leaning in by Namor, whispering.

"An ignorant peasant on top of being a surface-dweller. I imagine it must be a great reassurance to you to have this unfortunate situation so close to being resolved, your majesty."

"You have /no/ idea what a relief it is to see this farce come to a close, Vishin. Soon, my daughter will be allowed to move on with her life." Namor says neutrally.

"And before anyone considers a repeat of this with Princess Kassia or Prince MacKenzie, please let it be known that I'll not sit through another few days, weeks or months of this sort of contest. Is that clear?" Namor asks.

"Absolutely, your majesty." Vishin lowers his head and backs up slightly, waiting for Kerouac to begin the challenge.
