Atlantis - The Last Stand
Mason was wearing two parkas as he and Marrina waited at the set coordinates on the Nova Scotia shoreline. An official envoy from Atlantis was supposed to pick them up here. He was holding her hand, and what of his face could be seen between his scarf and his hat looked worried. He nodded to her.

"Just in case I get killed..." He squeezed her hand. "I love you. And you were worth it."

Jordan and the others have gotten as cloe as he figures they can without getting attention.

"Ok, Alex, Mel, you two are responsible for finding our parents and getting them out of there. When you've found them and have them secure, radio me and I'll raise a distraction so you can get out past the guards."

Among the various patrols around the city domes, there is one that seems to swing out a little wider than it should at one section, coming close to what could be called 'slums' by surface standards. A nearby embankment also seems to hold a number of caves, one of which has a power line running into it.

The powerline seems definitely the thing to follow. There's a light purple discoloration in the embankment as Mel sinks in and starts to spread.

He smiles, pulling down his scarf to kiss her, just as there's a spray of foam several dozen yards out. An Atlantean craft surfaces. It comes to shore and guards march out. Mason kisses Marrina again, almost defiantly, then turns and bows.

Something about this whole thing definitely set her on edge, but she couldn't tell what.

"I am pleased to accept the offer of transportation for myself and my chosen champion," she said.

She gave Mason a small tug, and started them toward the ship.

Mason nods and follows along.

"I trust," the vizier continues, even as he steps aside, "--that you have brought the death waiver, with your mark? It would, of course, be most unseemly if Lord Kerouac's family sought punitive measure in the highly unlikely event of his death. It is only a measure to protect you, Mister Jeffries." He gives a very formal, very insincere, sullen look.

Mason tenses, and reaches inside his coat, handing over the parchment. "I've signed it."

Vishin inspects the form and nods. "All is in order then." He signals to the guards, who form a tight semi-circle behind Mason and Marrina as they all re-board the craft.

Hours later, they arrive at Atlantis. The craft empties into an airlock, a dome used for diplomatic meetings having been filled with air. There are throngs of nobles and guards lining the walkways, leading to an arena with lavish seating, and a box for the royal family.

"Princess, if you please. Your father and sister await you." Vishin gestures for them to part.

Mason looks at her. "I'll be fine."

Aftermath

Mason kneeled, bloodied and about to fall over, but triumphant. He could still support some of his weight, so he didn't think the piercing of his leg had completely crippled him. He was more concerned about the shot that had nearly taken his eye, he still didn't dare try to open it. Half his face is covered with blood, rapidly staining his clothing.

The arena is like something Kubric and Escher might have collaborated on, with some bits of shrapnel thrown even into the stands. Kerouac is laid out, barely conscious, having admitted defeat.

The crowd is already in an uproar, some calling foul over Mason's mutation, some calling for another to challenge in Kerouac's place, others cheering just for the spectacle of what had been a truly impressive battle, and even polite applause from a few romantics, glad to see the defending champion triumph.

"My name... is Mason Jeffries..." He coughs out the words, forcing a grin as he tries to limp towards the royal box. "--and I. Am. Canadian."

Namor regards the young man in silence for a long moment, as the rest of the court watches. No one's moved yet to attend to Mac's request as they all wait to see if the King himself will strike down this young man who has braved seven different suitors to claim the hand of the Princess.

If Namor so ordered it, his men would kill Mason Jeffries and anyone who allied with him. Namor knows this. He also knows that his daughters and cousin would be among those to do so.

He does not enjoy the fact that Mason won, but the young man has proven himself worthy, after a fashion.

"Well-played, Mason Jeffries." Namor says simply. "This duel is concluded. See to the injuries of the victor and the vanquished. I am retiring to my council room until further notice." Namor says.

Then he rises and sweeps from the chamber without another word or a backward glance.

All of the wondering and waiting for the other boot to drop with Atlantean tempers and reactions will have to wait. There is a thunderous noise from the doors. Then another. After a third, the doors to the room of challenges fly open, buckling under the force of a sufficiently determined Canadian powerhouse.

Jordan strides into the room without a word, just a glare for all about - then walks right up to Namor, shoving a parcel of papers, sheathed in plastic for protection from the water, at Namor.

Namor realizes mid-stride that he's being approached. He turns, expecting some manner of attack and is annoyed to find the papers shoved in his face. He calls off the guards who are already approaching Jordan and stares the young man down.

"What is the meaning of this?" he asks, taking the papers. His gaze is still locked on Jordan.

Jordan begins, with a frown, brooking no interruption from anyone.

"Since this entire stupid affair began, I've been searching Canadian and Atlanean law for anything that would let me put an end to this farce. And to date, I've been hamstrung. Because its a matter of Atlantean law, if I so much as set foot here, I would have been arrested, fired, and shipped to Atlantis to face your criminal proceedings any way you wanted.

Today, you made a mistake.

Per Volume 500, Page 103, Article 31, subsection B of the 1961 to 1964 Vienna convention on foreign relations, to which Canada is a signatory, which states that there shall be an exception made to diplomatic immunity in cases where the agent has a vested involvement in a matter of succession.

This letter," he holds up the letter sent threatening the death of the Jeffries. "Which Prince Namor now has a copy of in hand, establishes a causal link between the proceedings here - which involve the eventual marriage of the eldest princess of Atlantis, a matter of succession, and the assault and kidnapping on Canadian soil of two Canadian citizens and fomer government agents, along with death threats against those agents unless Mason Jeffries conceeds any hope of becoming Prince of Atlantis to an individual not selected specifically by the prince regent of Atlantis - the only person who would be an exception to the articles of convention.
That mistake authorizes me, as an agent of the Canadian government, to walk in here, and inform the people heading up this farce that I now own your ass. Namor can kick me out if he wishes, with or without my prisoners, but if he does so, the next step is that the Prime Minister of Canada asks S.H.I.E.L.D. and Nick Fury to come in as an international peacekeeping force and turn Atlantis upside down, exposing every dirty secret, every skeleton in the closet, every hidden resource to which a surface body might wish to lay a claim, and anything else Nick Fury or his cigar get an itch to uncover in pursuit of evidence in the matter of a capital crime. So unless you want that, I suggest you deal with me.

As such, Vishin and Draconia of Atlantis - as a duly authorized representative of the Canadian government, I am placing you under arrest for the crimes of gross violations of personal rights and liberties, unlawful imprisonment, undue and illegal interference in matters of lawful succession, assault and aggravated battery, conspiracy to commit these acts and levying a threat of death against both current and former agents of law of a sovereign nation.

You have the right to be informed of all reasons for your arrest and changes in the conditions and charges.
You have the right to retain and instruct counsel. You may call any lawyer you wish. Canada provides a 24 hour telephone service by which you may gain legal counsel who may instruct you in private. Such advice is without charge.
You are not obliged to make any statement, but as, from this moment forward, you are now in my custody, anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.
If you do not understand sufficient English to understand these rights as presented to you, indicate such and I can read the charter of rights and freedoms to you in a dozen more languages - I studied the Atlantean translation on the way down.

And, just in case - you say, 'but wait, Agent Bochs, we didn't sign that letter. You can't prove we knew about it' - see, that document I gave Lord Namor is both a copy of the evidence, and includes a subpoena for every single member of Atlantis' armed guards to testify as to who might have given the order to have the Jeffries captured. I'm willing to bet that first, Namor will command them to tell the truth, and second, they would rather tell the truth and give your names than become one of the accused.

Each and every one of you is now witness to that subpoena having reached its intended audience. To wit - you've been served."

Mac's impressed. As a former Assistant Cop of sorts, this hits him in all the right places. He also knows that Namor's occupied and this Bochs kid doesn't know for sure which one Vishin is. And thus, that he's very slowly backing away. And he will soon back into His Highness MacKenzie Rider.

"Not going anywhere, Mister," he says as the hands go firmly on the courtier's shoulders. "Boy's got jurisdiction." Pause. "Um, right, Majesty?"

Namor listens to everything Jordan says in silence, this entire farce grating upon his last nerve. So much had gone /wrong/ in so little time that it almost seemed a blurs. Fury would know better than to come here seeking war, because Namor would burn the surface world to the ground before he let humans conquer Atlantis.

Then, Namor actually /reads/ the document in question, taking as long as it requires to go over the words and holding everyone in suspense. He reads over the document, then back to Jordan, then back at the document again.

The desire to smash this young man into the ground is strong, but it's tempered by something equally as intriguing.

Opportunity.

"First, you will refer to me as King, Agent Bochs. Secondly, I am not in the habit of letting...surface dwellers come into my kingdom and issues demands. Your threats of bringing SHIELD and Fury's hounds here hold little value with me. If the surface comes to Atlantis seeking warfare, we will deal with such transgressions accordingly." Namor says, no small hint of frost in his voice.

"However, you make an interesting point. I did not sanction this contest or the kidnapping of the Jeffries; when I have a quarrel with a man, I settle it myself and not with his parents or progeny. Still, Mason Jeffries and his family were wronged by citizens of Atlantis. If the situation were reversed, I would risk war to see that justice was done by my people." Namor tells Jordan.

He looks to Vishin.

"You and that bitch Draconia have placed good Atlantean men and women in harm's way for little more than your own personal gain and convinced them it was 'for the good of Atlantis'. I have the right to execute you both at this moment for treason against Atlantis and I should do so.

However, I find the human legal system to be far more cruel to endure. Therefore, you'll both be released into the custody of Agent Bochs and Alpha Flight. Pray that you are both sentenced to life imprisonment, for you are both permanently exiled from Atlantis, forbidden to return on pain of death.

And if any Atlantean should see you within my domain again, I grant them the authority to execute you on sight." Namor decrees.

He looks back to Jordan.

"I will, however, tell you to take your prisoners, your brother and his family and get the hell out of my kingdom, Agent Bochs. I grow weary of the treachery perpetrated before me and my temperament now is such that I will brook no more interference in the affairs of my people from parties foreign or domestic.

Do you have anything further?" Namor asks.
