Atlantis - The Last Stand
Mason was wearing two parkas as he and Marrina waited at the set coordinates on the Nova Scotia shoreline. An official envoy from Atlantis was supposed to pick them up here. He was holding her hand, and what of his face could be seen between his scarf and his hat looked worried. He nodded to her.

"Just in case I get killed..." He squeezed her hand. "I love you. And you were worth it."

Jordan begins, with a frown, brooking no interruption from anyone.

"Since this entire stupid affair began, I've been searching Canadian and Atlanean law for anything that would let me put an end to this farce. And to date, I've been hamstrung. Because its a matter of Atlantean law, if I so much as set foot here, I would have been arrested, fired, and shipped to Atlantis to face your criminal proceedings any way you wanted.

Today, you made a mistake.

Per Volume 500, Page 103, Article 31, subsection B of the 1961 to 1964 Vienna convention on foreign relations, to which Canada is a signatory, which states that there shall be an exception made to diplomatic immunity in cases where the agent has a vested involvement in a matter of succession.

This letter," he holds up the letter sent threatening the death of the Jeffries. "Which Prince Namor now has a copy of in hand, establishes a causal link between the proceedings here - which involve the eventual marriage of the eldest princess of Atlantis, a matter of succession, and the assault and kidnapping on Canadian soil of two Canadian citizens and fomer government agents, along with death threats against those agents unless Mason Jeffries conceeds any hope of becoming Prince of Atlantis to an individual not selected specifically by the prince regent of Atlantis - the only person who would be an exception to the articles of convention.
That mistake authorizes me, as an agent of the Canadian government, to walk in here, and inform the people heading up this farce that I now own your ass. Namor can kick me out if he wishes, with or without my prisoners, but if he does so, the next step is that the Prime Minister of Canada asks S.H.I.E.L.D. and Nick Fury to come in as an international peacekeeping force and turn Atlantis upside down, exposing every dirty secret, every skeleton in the closet, every hidden resource to which a surface body might wish to lay a claim, and anything else Nick Fury or his cigar get an itch to uncover in pursuit of evidence in the matter of a capital crime. So unless you want that, I suggest you deal with me.

As such, Vishin and Draconia of Atlantis - as a duly authorized representative of the Canadian government, I am placing you under arrest for the crimes of gross violations of personal rights and liberties, unlawful imprisonment, undue and illegal interference in matters of lawful succession, assault and aggravated battery, conspiracy to commit these acts and levying a threat of death against both current and former agents of law of a sovereign nation.

You have the right to be informed of all reasons for your arrest and changes in the conditions and charges.
You have the right to retain and instruct counsel. You may call any lawyer you wish. Canada provides a 24 hour telephone service by which you may gain legal counsel who may instruct you in private. Such advice is without charge.
You are not obliged to make any statement, but as, from this moment forward, you are now in my custody, anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.
If you do not understand sufficient English to understand these rights as presented to you, indicate such and I can read the charter of rights and freedoms to you in a dozen more languages - I studied the Atlantean translation on the way down.

And, just in case - you say, 'but wait, Agent Bochs, we didn't sign that letter. You can't prove we knew about it' - see, that document I gave Lord Namor is both a copy of the evidence, and includes a subpoena for every single member of Atlantis' armed guards to testify as to who might have given the order to have the Jeffries captured. I'm willing to bet that first, Namor will command them to tell the truth, and second, they would rather tell the truth and give your names than become one of the accused.

Each and every one of you is now witness to that subpoena having reached its intended audience. To wit - you've been served."

Mac's impressed. As a former Assistant Cop of sorts, this hits him in all the right places. He also knows that Namor's occupied and this Bochs kid doesn't know for sure which one Vishin is. And thus, that he's very slowly backing away. And he will soon back into His Highness MacKenzie Rider.

"Not going anywhere, Mister," he says as the hands go firmly on the courtier's shoulders. "Boy's got jurisdiction." Pause. "Um, right, Majesty?"

Namor listens to everything Jordan says in silence, this entire farce grating upon his last nerve. So much had gone /wrong/ in so little time that it almost seemed a blurs. Fury would know better than to come here seeking war, because Namor would burn the surface world to the ground before he let humans conquer Atlantis.

Then, Namor actually /reads/ the document in question, taking as long as it requires to go over the words and holding everyone in suspense. He reads over the document, then back to Jordan, then back at the document again.

The desire to smash this young man into the ground is strong, but it's tempered by something equally as intriguing.

Opportunity.

"First, you will refer to me as King, Agent Bochs. Secondly, I am not in the habit of letting...surface dwellers come into my kingdom and issues demands. Your threats of bringing SHIELD and Fury's hounds here hold little value with me. If the surface comes to Atlantis seeking warfare, we will deal with such transgressions accordingly." Namor says, no small hint of frost in his voice.

"However, you make an interesting point. I did not sanction this contest or the kidnapping of the Jeffries; when I have a quarrel with a man, I settle it myself and not with his parents or progeny. Still, Mason Jeffries and his family were wronged by citizens of Atlantis. If the situation were reversed, I would risk war to see that justice was done by my people." Namor tells Jordan.

He looks to Vishin.

"You and that bitch Draconia have placed good Atlantean men and women in harm's way for little more than your own personal gain and convinced them it was 'for the good of Atlantis'. I have the right to execute you both at this moment for treason against Atlantis and I should do so.

However, I find the human legal system to be far more cruel to endure. Therefore, you'll both be released into the custody of Agent Bochs and Alpha Flight. Pray that you are both sentenced to life imprisonment, for you are both permanently exiled from Atlantis, forbidden to return on pain of death.

And if any Atlantean should see you within my domain again, I grant them the authority to execute you on sight." Namor decrees.

He looks back to Jordan.

"I will, however, tell you to take your prisoners, your brother and his family and get the hell out of my kingdom, Agent Bochs. I grow weary of the treachery perpetrated before me and my temperament now is such that I will brook no more interference in the affairs of my people from parties foreign or domestic.

Do you have anything further?" Namor asks.

Jordan locks eyes with Namor. For the barest moment, with tempers at their height, it looks like there might be some challenge with Namor's tone, before the really surprising happens.

As a duly authorized agent of his nation's government, acting with the support of the law behind him, Agent Jordan Bochs kneels before Namor.
"Absolutely, your majesty. Canada has no quarrel with you, your court, or Atlantean law. We appreciate your tolerance in this matter, and once again welcome your eldest daughter into Canada as a treasured citizen and trusted agent. Canada's only interest in this matter was in apprehending the people responsible for threats to our national order."

Yes, the last bit is intentionally paraphrasing Namor. If he wants Atlantis to be treated like a major nation, worthy of respect, Jordan is happy to give him the opportunity to look awesome and kingly and international in front of his court - so long as Namor plays along.

As for getting the hell out of there with his prisoners - no one wants that more than Jordan, so its little surprise, in hindsight, that he's remarkably accomodating and chipper about getting everything he actually wanted, and all it cost was kowtowing a little in front of Namor.

Sometimes it pays to be Canadian, and not American about things.

"As soon as Vishin and Draconia are in whatever chains you deem sufficient to hold them, we will be out of your court with haste, your majesty."

Namor looks to the Captain of the Guard, Amrael Shahrazain.

"Captain, suit the prisoners, bind them and then take a squad of men and escort Agent Bochs and his people back to the surface. Once they have Draconia and Vishin in custody, return to Atlantis. I expect a full accounting of who was responsible for the Jeffries' kidnapping and who else was a part of this plot with Draconia and Vishin." Namor says.

The captain nods briskly, then orders that his men see it done.

"Your fair dealings with our people will be remembered, Agent Bochs. Atlantis seeks a relationship with the surface that is based on tolerance and respect, rather than distrust and rancor." Namor says.

"Princess Marrina, Princess Kassia and Prince MacKenzie: we have much to discuss. You will all meet with me again in two weeks' time to discuss matters of state." Namor says.

He turns to leave the room before he stops and regards Mason Jeffries.

"I have met many humans in the course of my life and my relations with them have not always been cordial. In fact, many of them have been antagonistic on both sides. I recognize, however, that it took great personal courage to come among a country of people who did not have the well-being of you and yours at heart." Namor says.

He takes a deep breath.

"The fact that you did so for the right to be with my daughter also does credit upon you and the people who raised you, Mason Jeffries, as well as your country and humanity as a whole. I cannot undo the wrongs done to your family and the disruptions of the lives of you and your friends...but for the sake of my people, my daughter foremost among them, I can attempt to forge an understanding borne of mutual respect. You are the standard by which I shall just future suitors of those in my family." Namor says.

"To that end, we will dine together, Mason Jeffries, once you are healed from your injuries. You, Princess Marrina, myself and the rest of Alpha Flight." Namor says.

"You have passed the first test, Mason Jeffries. I hope that you excel at the others in the manner you did at this one." Namor smiles enigmatically.

"You are all free to go." Namor says, once Draconia and Vishin are led back to the chamber, suited and clapped in sinew that will hold them.

Vishin seemed as if he was about to make an appeal to Namor, but the guards and restraints are already upon him.

"No! I was only trying to protect our people! Don't you all see?!" He jerks his chin in Namor and family's direction.

"The royal family's FETISH for the surface dwellers will destroy us all! How often has he betrayed our ways for Susan Richards?! We must stop it!" He'll continue ad nauseum until he's stopped.

Mac glances his sovereign cousin quickly. And if ever asked, he would mutter that his hand had slipped. And that jaw Vishin was using to do all that? It's going to just happen to get a nice firm, if somewhat pulled considering relative forces, punch.

Mason had been just about ready to set off some sort of chain reaction headed in the creep's direction, medics fussing over him be damned, when Marrina's cousin beats him to the... well, punch.

He manages to push them aside enough to look squarely at Namor with his one good eye remaining at the moment.

"Your Majesty,--" oh god oh god oh god don't say anything stupid don't say anything stupid "-- what I did... was the only thing to be done in the situation. It is my honor to have fought for Princess Marrina."

He manages to nod his head before the blood loss and fatigue catch up again and he lays down again.

Mac, remind me to high five you when we're not on official duty.

Kassia, for her part, was so angry that she was starting to take on a blue cast.

"And your fetish with subterfuge and treason strengthens Atlantis none itself."

Kassia moved to stand by her sister. Marrina would need the support.

Marrina really hoped her jaw wasn't hanging open, because right now, she couldn't have been for surprised.

First, there was Jordan's sudden arrival and his announcements. Then there was the revelation of who was behind everything. And then there was... Father was being... nice to Mason? Wanted to have dinner?

Also, she needed to definitely do something nice for Mac in the near future.

Right now, though, she just let out a breath of relief.
