Valentine's Night.
He'd headed to work as soon as he got up in the morning, barely stopped for lunch, and worked some more. Valentine's Day at a plant shop was kinda busy; go figure. Then there was the charity thing and a beautiful evening with Andrea. Mac had had an exhausting but excellent day.

And then he got home, and knocked on Kassi's door to check on her.

Ben Parker is worried. He hasn't seen Kassi in going-on two days and he's a little worried. He thought she might have been sick on Valentine's Day and he'd gotten busy later that night, but today was quite worrisome, especially after forgetting his phone at home, so he couldn't text her.

He'd had a pretty bad dream about having an argument with her, but he couldn't remember why they'd fight or most of the dream.

When he sees Mac, he's a little confused, but then Ben remembers that Mac works at a floral shop not far from here, so he might not know that Kassi didn't come to school.

"Hey, Mac. Is Kassi okay? She hasn't been at school and I've got her assignments for her. Were you coming to get them for her?" Ben asks.

Ben sighs. He knew this was coming.

"Okay, I know that her mom and dad travel a lot, and that they don't really have time for her, so they've appointed you to watch out for her. Her other sisters, likewise, don't have much time for her, but you're watching out for her. I get that.

But Kassi and I are really good friends, Mac. I'd...I'd like to be more than her friend if she's okay with that, but she's really guarded, like she's afraid of letting people in. I don't know what you tell her parents about the people she's hanging out with, but I really like her, and I'm not going to get scared off by you or her super-powerful business man dad or mom." Ben says.

"She's the first real girl-friend I've had since..." Ben stops, about to say since Sidonie died, but he can't. Thinking about Sidonie just now hurts for reasons he can't describe.

"...in a long time." Ben says, looking Mac in the eyes.

"Okay, Ben, I appreciate your willing to do the more detailed version of the If You Know What's Good For You conversation, but that's not the one we need to have right now. I need to talk to you about why I let Kassi stay home from school today, but first I have to ask you a real personal question, so sorry." Mac looked at him intently. "Have you ever seen a psychiatrist?"

"A psychiatrist?" Ben asks, his expression clearly confused. Why would Mac ask him that? Mom suggested that he "talk to someone" after Sidonie died, and Ben had refused then, too.

Did Kassi think something was wrong with him? Why wouldn't she just ask him instead of sending her cousin to try to shake him down?

"I don't need to see a shrink, Mac, so no, I haven't." Ben says.

"Where is this going?" he asks.

"Oh, it seemed like a reasonable question, since I came home last night to find Kassi crying because you two had had a fight, confirmed with someone else that you two had a fight and that you seemed like you were dealing with some kind of other emotional problem that made you lash out at her, and now you seem your totally cool self. So really, man, let's hope somebody's got a mental health problem here, because if you fought with my cousin and forgot about it just because you don't care, I have to seriously rethink being cool with you."

Ben nods at Mac slowly, as though Mac is speaking a language Ben has yet to decipher.

"Kassi said we had a fight? Did she say when? Or what this fight was about? Because that's news to me. I haven't seen her since Friday after the game. We went to Big Nick's, she ate a lot of fries and I teased her and...then I walked her home." Ben says, declining to elaborate on the after of that.

"I was hoping to see her before school yesterday, but it didn't happen." Ben says, trying to think of why that was. He's /mostly/ sure that Kassi was busy doing something, but he can't remember /what/ just now.

"I like to remember every time I see Kassi, Mac. I don't just forget stuff to forget stuff and I didn't see her yesterday or today, but I'm not sure I like what you're trying to say.

Would you ask her to call me? I'd like to know why she'd say something like that." he says, mostly confused and hurt by Kassi's action.

"Ben, I don't like what I'm trying to say. You were apparently there yesterday morning. I talked to this idiot who was bothering her yesterday morning and he said you were there, too. And I'd really prefer Kassi not talk to anyone else involved until I figure out what the heck's going on here. She was really taking it hard, and whether this is mental illness or what and who's got it, I don't need anyone making her worse."

"Oh please. My Aunt Angelica used to get tortured in her sleep by a telepath constantly, and she didn't know about it or anything she did as a result... but maybe you're not. Then maybe Kassi is. Maybe she's hallucinating and this jackass is encouraging it. If so, he's a dead man." Mac's voice couldn't be more serious. He figures he has to consider that a possible option, just in case. And if Vincent mindmagicked Kassi, he is deader than dead. "Just tell me where you were at breakfast time yesterday, and I'll be that much closer to knowing what the heck really happened."

/Vincent wouldn't let you see Kassi yesterday, remember? You saw him, and her, and then you were at school./

"Vincent...wait. That name sounds familiar. Kassi said something about a Vincent when I tried to talk to her, but she wouldn't go into details. The name is familiar, but I can't bring up a face, man.

You don't think /he's/ a telepath, do you?" Ben asks, wondering if this Vincent guy messed with his brain to keep him away from Kassi.

/That/ idea made Ben even madder. He was going to find out about this.

And it made the symbiote /very/ happy.

"Vincent's Andrea's ex. He and I aren't getting along too well at the moment, and I don't know everything he can do. So what I need to know right now, Ben, is where you were at breakfast time yesterday, because I'm trying to do this by the book here. Then I go back to Vincent and I do what needs doing. I don't want Kassi facing any of this until I've sorted it out."

	"I...went to get Kassi a gift-card to the new vegan restaurant she wanted, and I waited around for a bit for it to open. I think I went to Kassi's place, but I don't know if I saw her." Mac listened. Well, that settled it. Sure as hell and raging to the stars he hadn't seen her since Friday not fifteen minutes ago, and now he 'doesn't know if he saw her or not' yesterday. If it wasn't a normal mental illness, somebody mindscrewed the boy.

"Okay. If you've got that homework on you, I'll give it to Kassi, and here's hoping I can get her feeling better and back at school tomorrow."
