Checking in
When visiting Mom it was best not to go empty handed. A box of her favorite truffles worked pretty well. He made sure to stop and get some before he went into S.H.I.E.L.D. Medical. As worried as she was about Stark, she might not notice it wasn't her favorite vodka.

He knocked on the room door and waited for admittance.

Natasha heard the knocking at the door and jumped out of the chair she had been sitting in. Tony was asleep and she didn't want him waking up. The man needed all the sleep he could get. She had been dozing in the chair, not wanting to leave Tony's side even to rest.

She opened the door, smiled when she saw her son and slipped out of the room.

"Hi honey."

"Hi Mom. Just stopping by to see if things were still going okay." He offered her the box of chocolates. "And to bring something to help the time pass."

Natasha wrapped her arms around him and hugged him tightly. "Things are going," she said and kissed his cheek. Waiting was not one of Natasha's strong points.

He hugged her back. "As long as they're going in the right direction. How is he?"

"They're going in the right direction." Too slowly for Natasha's satisfaction, but she'd deal with her own issues. "He's sleeping right now. He's still very weak, but making progress."

"I'm glad to hear it." And he was for their sakes'. "Any word on when they expect he'll be able to go home?" Slow healing was something Misha had never experienced.

Natasha shook her head and released him. "None yet. They're being very tight lipped around here." On one hand she wanted nothing more than to be able to take Tony home, but on the other she was glad they were keeping him here. He wouldn't get any rest if he were at home.

"So I've heard. Your sister told Tony about her," Natasha said as she took one of his hands and led him to a few chairs in the hall. "How was Tahiti? Everyone more or less behave themselves?"

"Her research is faulty. She thought that pointing out I'm a bastard would be an embarrassment." He sat down next and stretched out his legs. "Tahiti was warm and relaxing, and everyone conducted themselves just the way they always have. Didn't you threaten dire consequences if anybody spilled about the sister?"

"Not all Starks are geniuses, apparently." She patted his thigh. "I did, but your sister's first loyalty will always be to Tony. No threat will ever keep her from telling him the truth. She's the biggest daddy's girl on the planet."

He laughed a little. "There's a newsflash. Maybe you can shed some light on something Ms. Donovan said at the party in front of credible witnesses. Apparently I'm a major stockholder in Stark Inc. Did you know about that?"

Natasha shook her head. "No, but then again, the man lives to surprise people. I'm not totally surprised though." She really wasn't. Though Misha didn't see it, Tony cared about her son and knew what he meant to Tasha and Anya.

As promised, Misha showed up at noon the next day carrying his backpack with enough beginning reading for the semester to keep him occupied and a grease-dotted takeout bag. Reading was hungry work.

He waved Mom off for her break, encouraged her to take as long as she wanted, and took a chair in Tony's room. The patient seemed to be sleeping and Misha didn't want to disturb him in anyway. Mom would skin him alive it he caused her husband any stress during the recovery process. So would Dad. Dad was big on united fronts and showing respect.

He opened a book, liberated a double bacon cheeseburger from the bag, and settled in for an afternoon of study.

"It's fucked," Misha answered after a moment. He balled up a food wrapper to drop in the bag and closed the book on his lap. "Company-wise. Mom and the kids are safe enough. There's a lot of attention on what's going on with Stark Inc. and another bombing would be suspicious."

He knew he liked this kid, even if the feeling wasn't mutual. "Do you know who bombed the car and if I was the target? You can't overlook the possibility of Ms. Donovan being just another opportunist."

"I don't know. Mom and Nick are playing it close, but the timing is too good not to suspect Ms. Donovan." In his head he's back at the party watching a stranger try to embarrass him by pointing out his bastard status in front of a senator and a financial backer. As if the world didn't already know after the coronation. It made him smile a little.

"Do you need anything? Water? A phone? More pain meds?"

"That's exactly why. Ambitious people who feel entitled to something make terrific patsies."

He can only shake his head a little as the nanites do their work. "For my wife and child not to do something over-the-top stupid in 'avenging' me. I'm right here, and alive. What needs to be done is to consolidate the stock and make a bid for the company."

"Mom's too busy guarding your door and Anya is being Anya. Over-the-top stupid hasn't happened." Yet. He, James and Eliza were still on the lookout for something other than ordinary stupid.

And speaking of stock... "Is there something you might've forgotten to mention that I shouldn't have heard from an ambitious, entitlement patsy first?"

"What? The stock portfolio?" He shifts a little to get more comfortable. "There wasn't a need. You'll do the right thing."

Misha suspected his true purpose in this crazy family was to provide entertainment when Stark got bored annoying the menagerie living under his roof.

"I appreciate the vote of confidence. I could appreciate it more with a little advance warning next time." Because surprising Romanovs always carried the possibility of danger, even the one with the old fashioned code of ethics.

No kid, that's just a side bonus.

Tony looks at him like he grew another head. "I assumed you knew you got something in the will - and you'd try to give it back." He shrugs as much as the healing process will allow. "I would say 'enjoy it' but that kind of fun I think you might be allergic to."

His dad didn't raise him to assume. Assuming things only gets a guy in trouble. He's to protect family and team, in that order. Be kind to kids and barmaids, certainly. Fight the bad guys. Everything else will sort itself out. He does have a sense of humor, but something about Stark keeps it silent most of the time.

Misha gave him the two headed look right back. "You married Mom six months ago and you're already planning to die? She's not that bad."

"Tasted her cooking?" The sardonic grin then moves to a brief, genuine look of wistfulness.

"Misha, you really don't get it, do you? I've been dying well before you or your sister were even a thought. Every single day of my life I've lived like I was dying because I was. First it was from boredom and lack of purpose. After Iron Man it was because you don't get long good-byes in this business. The only time I give a damn about living to see tomorrow is where your sister is involved. I love your mom because, stubborn as she is, she gets that."
