The Plot Thickens (Karen)
Fifteen hours after the Chicago PD responded to an incident at a warehouse on the pier, Detective Lynch is contacted by Seargeant Griswold, who ended up working overtime and was the first to respond when the call came in.

When she arrives, the police have shut down one of the main roads headed out of town and the reason is quickly apparent; off the side of the road, there is a burned out husk of a vehicle, a black 1967 Chevy Impala. There are scorch and burn marks on the vehicle where it hasn't been smashed or crushed beyond repair. On the ground, two bodies lie underneath sheets, and the Crime Scene Investigators are taking photos of the trunk, where there is a third body.

Sergeant Griswold approaches Lynch when she arrives.

"I'm startin' to think it might be time for me to hang it up, Detective." he says wearily, nodding to the crime scene.

Karen had arrived on her police motorcycle.

"You know you wouldn't be able to stay away for long," Karen says.

She gives the site a quick look over and does not like what she sees. "So what do we know so far?"

"Got a call about two hours ago reporting a vehicle broken down on the side of the road. First responders found two men in the front seat of the vehicle, burned nearly beyond recognition. However...they're both wearing Hell's Angels Prospect cuts. We've got ID's." Griswold says, passing her a pair of printed mug shots.

"Donnie Barber and Chris Gaines, both small-time felons and recent recruits of the United States' most dominant one-percenter motorcycle club." he says.

"The car itself looks like it drove through hell. There are some chain marks on the vehicle, could be stolen. We're running the plates through the database right now to find out, but...we've got another complication, just like last night's case.

There was a body in the trunk, female, early-to-mid 20's. There was an ID on her, too. Sarah Prescott, also in town to promote her new movie, co-starring Austin Caine.

She also happens to be Caine's ex-girlfriend. We confirmed that he was staying at a loft in town, and she's been over there a few times in the last week." Griswold says.

"Meanwhile, no word on Caine's."

"Bikers. OK so we've got a start there than. We need to see what else we can find out about them later."

"Shit," Karen says, "This is to be kept quiet as long as we can it going to be tough but we need to try."

"Caine is not looking good right now but in what way I don't know yet."

"Detective, this guy is connected to /two/ different crime scenes in less than twenty-four hours. There's no sign of him in either one.

How much long do you think we can keep a lid on this?" Griswold asks her.

"Did your, uh...friend come up with anything?" Griswold asks, seeming uneasy at bringing up the topic of Matt Walker.

"I don't think we can keep a lid on it for too long but the longer we can keep this close to our chest and from becoming a media circus the better," Karen says, "If we can't keep a lid on it then we can try to control how the information gets out as best as we can."

"Some dark stuff," I haven't heard if he's found anything new yet other than what I told you he told me at the crime scene."

"Look, no offense to you, or your friend...but have you ever noticed that things tend to get /weirder/ whenever he gets involved?" Griswold asks.

"The guy can do things that normal people /can't/, and it's an every day thing for him, it seems like. He shows up at crime scenes before we tell anyone about them and he always seems to know more than he says he does." the Sergeant says.

"I just wonder what else in this city is out there that we're gonna run into on account of whatever crazy is taking over Chicago."

At the Police Station

When Karen gets back to the station, Matt is sitting at her desk, waiting for her.

"Heard you had an interesting morning. I did, too. Guess who came to visit me today?"

Karen give him a quick get out of my chair glare.

"Interesting is one way to put it I guess," She says, "That friend of yours Ian I think you called him."

Matt smirks and rises from her chair, to take the one on the opposite side of her desk. He reists the urge to put his feet up on it. The first time he ever did that, Karen flipped his chair on him, sending him sprawling to the floor.

"Actually, I had a woman and her son come to my office today, asking me to look for her other son. She thinks he's in trouble. Guy by the name of Jeffrey Thomas Templeton. Told her that I was too busy to look and she started crying and begging for my help. I told her I'd get to it when I could.

I asked for a picture of her boy and..." Matt pulls a photo the pocket of his long black duster and hands it over to Lynch.

"...this is her boy, Tommy." Matt says.

When Karen looks at the picture, she'll see that the man is a few years younger, but he's identical to Austin Caine.

"She said he wasn't doing so well lately, after his 'break-up' with Audrey Stark, I think her name is. Anyway, Mrs. Templeton says that Tommy-Austin called her the same day Stark got married, drunk as all get out. She says he wasn't himself. I did a bit more looking around and some of his co-workers say he hasn't been the same since then. He's missing meetings, not showing up to events and the like. A few people say he was pretty temperamental a few days after.

He even ditched some girl he was supposed to go out with after a charity auction because she was in a wheelchair. Real saint, huh?" Matt asks.

"What happened with you today?"

"Sounds like the media would just love to tear him a new one," Karen says, "It seems like they love nothing more than a celebrity in a downward spiral."

"We found another bizarre murder," Karen says, "A couple of hell's angels and get this Austin's girl was also found there killed as well in the trunk of the car. The whole place was pretty well burned. It wasn't pretty."

"His girlfriend was in the trunk of the car, with a couple of bikers?" Matt asks, his brow furrowing in confusion. That didn't really fit anything.

"Let's look at what we've got. Two murders in less than twenty-four hours, Austin Caine with a a connection to both. Scent of hellfire at one scene...wait. You said the second scene was burned up, too?" he asks.

"I've got a bad feeling about this one, Karen. Something doesn't fit right with all of this." he says.

"Who was the girl in the trunk? Any ID?"

"Sarah Prescott was his ex-girlfriend and his co-star in his latest movie, Karen. Caine is somehow connected to both of these events in less than twenty-four hours and no one has seen /him/ at all." Matt says.

"His ex-girlfriend turns up dead a few hours after his wallet turns up at a Cultists Anonymous meeting. For all we know, he tossed his wallet on the ground and one of those psychos just happened to find it.

His mother comes looking for him but wants to hire a private investigator, rather than talk to the cops. Hell's Angels don't take kindly to having their people offed. You can bet /they'll/ be looking for him, too.

Yeah, I see this going badly before we get much further on." Matt says.

The Following Night at Fangtasia
[info]this_fire_burns
2011-06-20 02:55 am UTC (link)
Matt Walker steps into the vampire bar called Fangtasia (who the hell named this place?) and looks around until he finds the person he's seeking.

He does his best to ignore 1) that Jace Everett's "Bad Things" is playing. 2) That it really does feel like the air went out of the room, because the place is dead silent (pun intended) 3) That if he didn't need Michelle's help right now, he'd be hunting most of the patrons in here right now.

Matt's killed at least four vampires a night since making his demand that vampires leave Chicago. He's pretty sure a few of these guys know who he is and wouldn't mind settling the score.

Rather than dwell on those things, he walks on up to the bar and sits down in front of Michelle.

"Hey, I need to talk to you, in private." Matt says.

And to think, she was beginning to think the madness had, at least, receded back to "hypnotize and drink from fangbanger" levels. But this was clearly a sign that it had not.

"All right," she said. "I get off in ten."

It was actually closer to twenty. Between a sudden influx of norms and a brief argument over tips with a serving girl, Michelle was ready for her shift to be over when she was able to talk to Matt again.

"All right," she said. "Let's find somewhere private."

Of course, this would be about the time that one of the vamps in the bar decides to get brave...or stupid.

"Hey, Michelle. Don't go anywhere with this asshole. You know what he does to our kind?" the guy, Rick, asks. Rick is a regular and might be a little sweet on Michelle.

"You mess with her, Wizard, and I'll fuckin' drink you dry." Rick says, baring his fangs.

"Hey, people? /He/ is standing right here. Michelle, you're on my very short approved list. In fact, you're the lone entry. Rick here is about three seconds, and the wizard means, THREE SECONDS, from finding out if he really does sparkle in sunlight like Edward Cullen." Matt says, staring the vampire down.

"But in the interest of not getting your ashes all over Michelle's new Coach handbag, I'm gonna suggest she walk out first so I can follow her. Be cool and I'll take the evening off." Matt grins.
