On The Road
The private plane touches down at Logan International airport at sundown and Avery's eyes snap open as he comes awake. He looks about wildly for a moment, uncertain of where he is, taking stock of the people around him. He's been feeling strange since the other night.

He's on this plane for a reason, but he doesn't know why. Furthermore, his mouth is so dry that he feels like he could drink a lake.

"Water..." he manages to croak, turning to Sydney.

Avery forces a smile onto his face, trying to fake it until he makes it. He wasn't able to see Zoey for Father's Day or the day they left because he wasn't feeling well, but he couldn't let whatever he'd caught shut down his life.

He takes the offered glass of water and smiles at Sydney, hoping this fever goes down soon.

"Honey, I'm fine. Just a little head cold. If it gets worse, I'll go to a doctor. I promise." he says, leaning over to kiss her cheek. By god, she was warm...and she smelled different. It was something new, but not her perfume.

Something in that smell made his mouth water, and suddenly wanted Sydney then and there.

Instead, he takes a long, deep drink of his water, draining the glass quickly. Oddly enough, his mouth still felt like sandpaper.

"I think one more ought to do it." Avery says, passing her the glass again.

Sydney refilled the glass and passed it back. Syd was a mom and she did mom things to other adults. Like now when she put her hand on his forehead. "You're burning up," she said with a scowl. "I don't like this. We're going to the hospital as soon as we land."

She picked up her handheld computer and made arrangements for a car to pick them up and take them to Mass General.

	"You look like death warmed over," she said. "You're pale and hot. I have godlings and I'm not afraid to use them even if it means one of them carrying you into a hospital." "Yes, dear." Avery sighs. He really wanted to get to that lockbox today, but if they were going to the hospital, then that might have to wait. Besides, once Sydney could see that he was going to be okay, she'd probably relax.

"I love you, too, Sydney. We'll go to the hospital and then we'll get dinner. How does that sound? We'll hit the post office in the morning." Avery says.

Pause.

"Do I really look that bad?" he asks.

	"You look bad enough for me to worry," she said and kissed his forehead. "It's a deal." She sighed with relief. She didn't want to fight him on it, but she would call the Defenders if he wasn't going to go. She wasn't above carrying through with her threats. (Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

	The next morning, Avery wakes up and the first thing he notes is that he feels like a million bucks. It's a little bright in his room, but that's okay, because he feels /great/! He looks over to see where Sydney is. (Reply to this)(Thread)

Avery rises from the bed and simply watches Sydney sleep for awhile. She looked peaceful and he didn't want to disturb her, so he slid out of the bed and crept out of the room quietly.

He doesn't quite understand that he's not making any sound just now as he peeks out of the room, but looks down over the hallway to see if anyone's around. He sees a nurse or two and flags one down.

"Mr. Crittenden, you shouldn't be out of bed." the nurse says.

Avery nods apologetically and looks the woman in the eye, giving her his best charm school smile.

"Do you think I could get a bagel or something? I skipped dinner last night." he says.

"Sure, I'll be right back with one." the nurse says, her eyes seeming to glaze over a bit. She turns and leaves without another world.

"Oookay." Avery says to himself.

	He's practically standing next to her when she turns to look the opposite direction. Once again, he moves almost silently about the halls. "Hi, honey. 	About an hour later, after various cajoling, threatening and something that may or may not have been mind control (Avery is really hoping Sydney didn't pick up on that), they have the contents of the safety deposit box. "When she was younger, she ran off with some guy for nearly a year. Dad flipped out big time. After she came home, she and Dad got into it really bad and he threw her out.

They don't even talk anymore. Can't be in the same room, and all. It's part of the reason that I try to be so close to Zoey. I don't want she and I turning out like that." Avery says.

"But there's an address here. The house is in Sydney, Sydney." Avery grins at the little joke.

"By that count...this kid would be like...twenty-two." Avery says.

The discussion with his mother went poorly.

She begged Avery to let this go and not rip open "old wounds", but Avery wasn't hearing it. He couldn't understand why his mother would tell him to give up on this person in their family.

When he heard his father enter the room on the other end of the receiver, Avery ended the call with his mother.

"Looks like we're on our own with this one, but that's okay. I'll make my parents deal with this when we get back." Avery says.

"Syd, thanks for sticking with me on this. I can't tell you how much it means to me." he says, kissing her hand.

"When this is over, I'm taking you somewhere with lots of sun where you can wear a bikini and Zoey can play in the water and make sandcastles." Avery smiles.

"Right now, we need to find this house and see if we can talk to my nephew." he says.

The plane lands and they exit into a bright sunny summer day in Sydney. Avery winces in discomfort as the sunlight hits him, covering his eyes.

Sydney can see that Avery's skin is about three shades paler than it was when they left Boston.

"Damn it's bright out here." he complains.
