A Chilly Fall Afternoon (open)
The Ides of October found Cait in the kitchen at Xavier's baking various types of cookies and even a few pies. The Ides weren't something they celebrated here in the States, but back home they still kept a few of the traditions alive by celebrating. The Ides of October were always her least favorite. The chariot race was always fun, but the slaughtering of the October Horse was not and Cait hated it.

This year instead of watching a horse get killed, she was in the kitchen baking.

Lucas doesn't spend a lot of the time in the school buildings, but when he does, its usually in the kitchen. Right now, its planning to do some cooking for a weekend picnic, only to find it rather occupied.
"We celebrating something?"

"It's the Ides. Back home it's sort of a combination fertility/please-please-don't-let-something-terrible-happen thing."

"We have some of those too, good thing to encourage now and then. How can I help?"

"Eat," Cait smiled. "I'm done so all you need to do is eat."

He takes one of the cookies and leans back against the counter. "That I can do. I need to do some cooking eventually, but no rush. Moira, Danielle and I are going out camping this weekend, I think."

"S'good stuff." Corey, finished his pie, will handle a little of the cleanup so Cait can get a chance to actually have some.

"Camping? Cool."

"Mmm, good cookies, thank you. And yeah, we found some great spots back in the woods, and the supervisors seem pretty ok with it as long as Danielle is somewhere around to sort of chaperone."

"There's pie too," Cait added. "It sounds like fun. Nice time of the year to do it too."

"Definitely going to have to try that. There enough for me to pack a little for the weekend trip out? The time of year doesn't much matter. Moira, Danielle and I all spent most of our lives pretty outdoor-centric. I think we'd just kind of live in the woods and use our rooms for storage and the really bad weather days if they'd let us."

"Sure looks like it. I bet Moira and Danielle haven't had pumpkin much before."

"You three definitely have me beat. I like the outdoors, but I'm pretty into beds for most days. And my rain tolerance is low."

"Aww. The Twerp doesn't like getting wet." Which of course Cait exploited every chance she got. Corey spent a lot of his life being wet. "There's plenty for you to take with you. I kind of go crazy when I bake."

"Thanks, I appreciate that. I'll let people take what they're going to, and pack up leftovers for camping. And you're probably right about them and pumpkins, not native to their home."

Corey nodded, expression scrunched. The short-stack wasn't the biggest fan of random dousings, either. Cait had some distinctly unfair advantages in this family.

"It's funny to think about what's native where. I mean seriously, when you consider that basil and tomatoes were on opposite sides of the world until relatively recently, 'cause they were just made for each other."

"Do you spend your time looking up useless information?" Cait asked. Half the time she was amazed at the weird stuff her brother knew.

"For the most part, I wouldn't know. I just know what grows in the midwest, since if it wasn't a short trucking route, it didn't usually make it to middle-of-nowhere Colorado. That, and a lot of things we just grew ourselves."

"We grow a lot of our own food in Nova Roma. Once and awhile someone will go into one of the cities for things we can't grow."

Cait shrugged. She grabbed a plate and put a slice of cherry pie before offering it to Lucas.

Lucas accepts the pie gratefully. "There's a couple community gardens and things like that out on the reservation, but for the most part, it was smaller scale. Just what Mom and I grew. And eventually Michael."

"Personally, I like going to the grocery store to get what I want. It's easier and a lot less work. The only downside is it never tastes as good."

"The grocery store had basics, like flour, sugar, bread... about three fourths of the time. But only restocked once a month. Otherwise, it was mostly ramen and honey nut cheerios. When we needed something we couldn't grow, we could go into town, but that was a three hour drive."

"Yeah, that's a big trip. Usually, the people in Nova Roman willing to put on some pants and go into Querencia and such places had a pretty easy trip of it. ...Of course, a lot of times during the summer, it's our immediate family. Everyone knows I need my shade-grown chocolate bars -- for some reason, Grandad Lucius won't suggest that any growing space get set aside for that -- and would give a list."
