A Chilly Fall Afternoon (open)
The Ides of October found Cait in the kitchen at Xavier's baking various types of cookies and even a few pies. The Ides weren't something they celebrated here in the States, but back home they still kept a few of the traditions alive by celebrating. The Ides of October were always her least favorite. The chariot race was always fun, but the slaughtering of the October Horse was not and Cait hated it.

This year instead of watching a horse get killed, she was in the kitchen baking.

Cait smiled. "Thanks. I try."

"Cait's awesome at this stuff," Corey admits. "I, in my opinion, have the slight edge on, say, chili."

"Chili is man food," Misha said with as straight a face as he could manage. "Takes a man to make a good chili to compliment your beer."

Cait knew Corey was better at cooking, but she pwned him at baking. "Yes, you are better at cooking, but you still won't make garum for yourself."

She grabbed a few drops of water from the sink with her powers and flicked them in Misha's face.

Corey grinned. "Yes, and it takes some special consideration when the target beer is Root."

"...You are talented and stylish please don't make me make my own garum?" Why did the the yummyness of the sauce have to be directly prpoportional to the lousiness of the preparation process, oh cruel world?

Misha scrunched his face up against the water droplets, covering his plate with his hands so the contents stayed dry. "What's garum?"

"Disgusting," Cait said as she grabbed a cookie.

"The ketchup of the gods. Unfortunately, the whole making it with pickled and fermented fish guts is really hard and gets kind of...smelly."

"Uh... yeah." That idea actually stopped Misha from taking another bite for a second. Only a second. "Sounds like something Dad would eat."

"Kind of smelly? There's a law about making it inside the city limits of Nova Roma." She shook her head.

"They put it on and in just about everything," she said to Misha. "Fish paste. Gross."

"Man food," Misha said with a sage nod. "For a New York boy, I live dangerously eating from the street carts. And if Mom or Anya decides to try something in the kitchen."

"Then you're going to try some next time we come back from Nova Roma," Cait grinned. She quirked an eyebrow at that. "Surely they can't be that bad."

"Worse. I love them to pieces but I don't trust anything they make in the kitchen. Appliances have been known to commit suicide when they walk into the room."

"Oh, I wish I was." He shook his head and started on one of the cookies. Mmm... He needed milk.

He got up to get a glass and the jug from the fridge. "If it wasn't for takeout, I'd have starved when I stayed with her on visits. Anya inherited it."

"Sounds like they should avoid moving out of the big city if they can help it."

"I'm sure neither one won't ever be caught roughing it in the suburbs." He got the milk and returned to his seat to enjoy the treats. "I think those exact words are on Jarvis' business cards."

"They live a cushy life, that's for sure." If Brat heard that, she'd have whacked him into next week. He picked up a cookie from his plate. "There was a bakery near Mom's place that she'd let me go to on weekend visits to get cookies and stuff. These are better."

Cait smiled and her cheeks turned red at the compliment. "Thank you."
