Adjustment Time
Still bothered five days after the lunch that introduced both a sister and a view of his father Jack didn't realize existed, Jack was spending a lot of time on the roof looking at the New York skyline.

He hadn't picked up a pencil or piece of charcoal in the whole five days.

He'd spent some of them with Dad, in between Matt dealing with Eliza and Mrs. Stark, assuring Dad that everything was okay. In a sense it was. He liked Eliza enough for someone he didn't know much. He wished it didn't feel like Mom was getting the raw end of something.

He hadn't spoken to Kal directly in the last five days. He'd left some messages for her, letting her know Dad was in town and they were handling family business. He even offered to go back to San Francisco with Dad and talk to Mom, but Matt felt this was one discussion that didn't need to include the whole family.

With the sun going down, Jack sent a text Kal's way.

Hey Gorgeous. Lunch or dinner soon?

How about meeting me in a couple of hours at my place? I'll get takeout, whatever you want. Roof is nice at night.

Jack smiled. Kal had the knack of making him feel good.

You can have me for dessert. See you soon.

Soon was nearly nine o'clock. Jack tacked a note on his door for Kal and carried a blanket, an ice chest with cold drinks and the bag of food he'd purchased from the Chinese restaurant two blocks down.

On the roof, he spread out the blanket on a swept area of the roof, near a couple of lawn chairs in case they'd rather sit and watch the stars. The bag held takeout containers of chow mien, egg rolls and fried rice, with eating utensils and handy wipes. He set it all in the middle of the blanket and wandered over to the ledge to look over and see if he could see her arrive.

Kal took the easy way to Jack's and therefore didn't see the note on the door because she saw him on the roof. The night was nice enough for sitting outside and pretending there were stars in the sky. The only way a person saw a star in New York was seeing a celebrity on the streets.

She smiled when she saw him and landed softly next to him. Flying was getting easier the more she practice. The wobbling was almost all gone.

"Hey handsome," she said with a smile.

Jack like his illusions of seeing stars. He knew they were up there. It was enough.

One second he was alone, and then nothing was so disturbing that it couldn't be made better with a smile from a gorgeous brunette with great bone structure. "Hey you. Brace yourself, I'm going to hug you."

"And here I was hoping for a nice deep kiss, but I suppose I'll settle for a hug," she teased as she wrapped her arms around him.

"There'll be kissing, but right now I really need this," he said into her hair as he put his arms around her and squeezed.

After a long minute of breathing her in, he turned to dip her, holding her securely in his arms. "You were saying something about a kiss?"

She knew about how much fun family issues could be. She hugged him tightly as long as he wanted. She needed it as much as he did.

"I did," she whispered. Her mouth brushed across his lightly before she gave him a deep kiss.

The kiss ended and he smiled against her mouth. "I missed you. Hungry? Thirsty? Any other appetite I can feed for you?"

"Missed you too," she said against his mouth. "I just want you, but first tell me how your family stuff went. What happened?"

He kissed her again and turned her toward the blanket and the waiting food. "Well, it turns out I sort of have a sister."

Kal sat down and patted the spot next to her. "How do you sort of have a sister?"

He sat down and leaned over to kiss her neck before he began unpacking the food.

"Eliza Romanova, daughter of Natasha Romanova and Matt Murdock, appeared in New York from another dimension. She did the only thing she knew to do, she went to the Avengers. Mrs. Stark called my dad to come out and meet her. It also turns out that my dad and Mrs. Stark were a serious item from way back, before I was born. Like they could have gotten married themselves if everything had worked out right."

"Wow. That's...wow. How are you with all of this?" She put a hand on his thigh. "It's a lot to deal with all at once."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

He stopped to put his hand over hers. "Eliza seems nice, don't get me wrong. She's out of her world, but she's dealing with it. Mrs. Stark and her family took her in. They had another one show up last year so they're used to it."

"Dad, though... It was like he was seeing what might've been if he and Mrs. Stark had made it work. Her son was there, the guy in the papers. Misha. If he and I hadn't been there, they would've been a family all their own. Mom is going to have a fit if she hasn't already."

"At least she seems to be handling it okay. Your dad seems like the resilient type." Kal had met the man once, but Mr. Murdock had a certain air about him. "I can't imagine what it's like for him to have an old girlfriend to come back into his life like this. Your mother, I think, will be more understanding than you think she will be."

She squeezed his hand. "How are you holding up?"

Kal made so much sense, but Jack couldn't forget hearing his father's heartbeat speed up at the sight of Mrs. Stark, or hers skip beats when they arrived at the restaurant. Parents shouldn't be so complicated.

It wasn't the more important thing, though. Eliza's well being was foremost.

"I'm okay." He lifted her hand to kiss her palm before return to setting dinner out. "I gave Eliza my cell number and asked her to call me whenever she wanted. She has a lot to get used to, but she's in good hands. What about you? What have you been doing the last few days. How did finals go?"

"It's ... different." He gave her a rueful smile. "Mom and Dad raised me away from all this, so I have some catching up to do. Come on, tell me about your weekend."

"Which is why it has to have really shaken you up," she said. "You can talk to me, Jack. I'll always be here."

She waved her hand in the air. "It was an interesting weekend. I have a cousin staying with us for awhile. He's nice, but a little clueless because he was raised in Olympia and in space. I also had another cousin pop in for a brief visit."

"I know," he told her. "I appreciate it. I've had a few days to get used to the idea. Just waiting to hear how it went at home."

"Your cousin was raised in Olympia Washington, and space?" The two didn't quite reconcile in his head. "Are they both on Sersi's side of your family?"

"I'm sure your father will let you know if there's any problems."

"Olympia as in the Eternal's city," she clarified. "And in space. His mother is...hard to explain, but she is a cosmic being." She nodded. "Yes, Mom's side of the family."

After alternate dimensional family, cosmic beings were not so daunting.

"Right, the Eternal's city. Sorry, my brain flipped when it should've flopped. How do the two you like having a house guest?"
