Civilian Management: Alpha Flight
Before entering the building he reads his personnel file one more time.  Randy was always more intuitive with these files then he was.  If he didn't feel the ex-MP was the only one he could trust Bryan would never have shared a damn thing with a civilian, even if it wasn't Randy's fault.

Jeez, it was a year ago.  They'd sent his fiancĂ©e into so-called a domestic disturbance call.  It turned out to be a hostage situation and the punk targeted Randy.  Being a generous soul, Randy wrote the whole thing off as a bad coincidence - just something that could happen to any cop, much less one around a highly armed population.  Bryan was more cynical.  He thought Sir - his nickname for his dad - might have hand in it.  Randy, of course, make a joke about Bryan's paranoia at the very idea.  What he hadn't told the love of his life is that Sir offered a command and promotion if he found someone more "military wife" material.

Besides, Randy could have been the next Tony Stark.  The Vinicator suit performed a lot better after a week in their basement.

Well Sir, he thought You wanted me serving my country honorably?  How do you like this?   He walks into his new command, literally wrapped in the flag.  Let the fun begin.

He nods. "Afternoon everyone. Please -" He gestures. "Have a seat and I'll make this short."

Jordan still seems ok with this, other than seeming worried about his team, especially Emily, and how they're taking this. He tries to not add to the tension any more, at least, and settles in at the front.

Alex jumped up and onto the table. He casually walked across and then jumped down into Mel's lap. Maybe having a cat to pet would help calm her even though Alex hated being seen as a pet.

Mel scritches behind Alex's ears, his presence a welcome distraction from her nerves, but certainly still paying attention to what's going to be said.

Marrina took a seat. New guy didn't seem too bad, though she did not, personally, think that they needed anyone other than Jordan.

Emily's annoyance at her anger being interrupted by others finally overflows.

"You can all roll over and accept a new leader if you want," she shoots to the rest of the team, "but I think Jordan's been great, and I'm not going to just allow this."

She turns to storm out of the room.

Jordan jumps up to get in her way. "Emily, I understand why you'd be upset. Believe me, I'm honored all of you trusted me enough to let me lead you so far. But we work for the Canadian government and the Department. We get paid, we get missions... they can change the rules on us, and we have to be able to deal with that. I can't ask anyone to like it, but can I ask we at least try and stick together in this and do our job? At least give the Lieutenant a chance."

She stops and glances between Jordan and Whittaker.

"Fine," she says. "Since the team leader has asked me to stick around."

She sits and shoots daggers at Whittaker.

When everyone is together, Bryan starts to speak. He operates as if the teenage outburst never happened.

"My name," he starts. "Is Lieutenant Bryan Whittaker. My service record, by my request, has been opened to you. I have been ordered by the Department of Defense to take on the identity of 'Vindicator' and command of this team." He looks directly at Jordan. "So far, this team has been lead with honor and success." Then he goes back to addressing the group. 'I'm here to continue that trend. Be assured, the enemy has been out there watching what you do and forming strategies to get around us - or worse."

Mel listens. Well, he sure didn't seem like he lost his temper easily. That was good. Really good.

She looks to Alex when he speaks.
"That's the ones from America or the Balkans," she whispers. "Ours tend to just kill people a lot, Mom says.."

"We don't know what the future holds," he notes. "But if history is an indicator, this team will be facing some tougher fights. My job is to make sure you have the support and structure to do yours at maximum efficiency."

Once he is, he asks bluntly. "Are we gonna be expected to kill people?"

"No. While the DoD has a stake in things and lethal force has been authorized, we are not soldiers in the conventional sense. Killing will only ever be done in the defense of other, those on the team, or ourselves and - " He smiles for the first time. "Since government paperwork can make you consider death a better option, I would think through lethal force very carefully."

Marrina hadn't had much to say; she was content to let the others talk and ask questions for the most part.

"How much autonomy as a unit are we going to have? The Department hasn't asked us to do anything we wouldn't have been inclined to do anyway so far, but... I've heard stories."

They did before but it was clear at a glance Jordan Bochs had been doing all the work, and doing it the way a bright 16 year old who was guessing on his homework world.

He grimaces. "You don't. I do."
