Defenders
Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy.

Christmas Day is a Christian holiday, it's true, but it also has become increasingly secular. It is an opportunity for love, charity, and goodwill, even in Los Angeles, arguably the most superficial city in the country.

There is some debate within mystical circles if there is indeed such a creature as the embodiment of Christmas Giving known as Santa Claus. But whether or not there is such a being, the spirit of giving itself is very real, be it incarnated in a fat man in a red suit or not.

Throughout this small blue planet of Earth, people have brought trees into their homes, decorated them with lights and ornaments, and placed them in locations of honor. Stockings have been placed on the chimneys. And gifts have been placed under the tree.

Some are looking forward more to the receiving than the giving. But for many, it is the act of giving which warms them, which fills them with the holiday spirit.

Each person, in their own way, becomes a part of this spirit of giving. Each person, in their own way, becomes Santa Claus.

The Defenders Manor has been decked out with lights, as has most of the grounds. Ohu has made hanging lighting a top priority, and every tree on the grounds -- including the palm trees -- is well lit with multi-colored lights. Despite the warm location, Ohu has made sure that there's plenty of snow on the grounds, too, with a bit of magic. As for the gods themselves, and their mortal keepers...

She knew all about every cent counting. How many times did Syd only eat a few bites of food and let Zoey have the rest because she needed it more? Or counting change so she could afford a gallon of milk?

"You're going to do it," she said. It wasn't a question. "I'm still trying to figure out how I got dragged into it. I'm a historian and a glorified babysitter. That's it."

"Again, I don't see where I have a choice, at least not short-term." He's still pacing a little.

'You're better at this then you know."

"That's because this job is basically babysitting. Granted they're not kids and they're gods, but it's still babysitting. That I can do. What Thor is asking me to do? I can't do that. I don't know how to do that."

"Ms. Potts does a lot more than babysitting," Syd pointed out. She sighed and took a long drink from her wine glass. "Just what would all of this entail?"

"Making sure someone with some age and experience is signing the papers at some level so Dr. Doom, Margaret Donovan, or some other creep doesn't take over the means to destroy the Earth 30 times over."

Syd sighed. "I have got to be certifiably insane to even consider this," she muttered before finishing off her glass of wine.

"No doubt." He's going to pay for this. The mead is going to help any old time now. "But at least while we get screwed over in New York, I can show you the sites."

"And not in the good way," she said before she realize what she said. Yup, definitely had enough wine. She could feel the heat on her cheeks.

She cleared her throat. "Just out of curiosity, how many trips to New York will this require each year?" Syd had to think of Zoey first and no way in hell was she leaving Zoey alone with the kids for that long.

"Nope," he chuckles. "Not in the good way. So I might as well get you down to Rockfeller Center and Zoey into a snowball fight on the Avengers lawn. Maybe Steve can show her how to aim."

"You didn't answer my question. How many trips a year will this entail?"

She smiled. "I'd like that and Zoey will love it, but who's Steve?"

"Barton kid." He smiles. "His mom and dad are real characters. You'll love them. Overall, Steve's a good egg and a crack shot."

He sobers at the other question. "I have no idea, but if Thor wants any other favors, I'm going to lobby he makes it only as much as you can handle. Sometimes he needs to have that drilled into his head."

"I see. I'm sure Zoey will have a great time. I'm just thinking about Zoey in terms of these trips. I can't pull her out of school that much and goodness knows I am not leaving her here with the kids." There would be no buildings or anything left by the time they got back. She looked at the bottle of wine and contemplated another glass. Probably not a good idea since she was probably going to be up at the crack of dawn.

He looks at his empty glass and pours another. He then sits on the couch, takes Syd's feet and starts to rub them. "It's been nothing but hell for you here, huh?"

A shiver raced down her spine. She almost melted into the couch when he started giving her a foot rub.

"No. It's been challenging to say the least and I never know what's going to happen next, but it hasn't been hell. Yes, I've thought about quitting a few times, but that's before I was used to the insanity. Now I'm just another patient in the nuthouse."

She smiled. "It's like everything else in life with ups and downs. Good along with the bad."

"Seriously, why stay?" He focused on her feet. "Zoey loves it, but outside of the pay you always seem...tense."

"The pay is the big factor," she said. "What I make in one year here, it would have taken me two or three years before." Not having to pay rent or buy food also helped in the money situation. "Access to that library is another reason. I would have killed to have access to a library like that in the past."

What she didn't say was this is just who she was. She had always been the focused, serious type her whole life. Reading and learning were her top priorities and she knew she came across as intense, uptight and stuffy.

"And it's a challenge."

"Pay, library, and challenge...." He considers this while taking sips from his mead and working his way up her calves. She has spectacular calves. 'In what way?"

Oh God his hands felt good and she was trying to do her best to not melt into the couch. She kept in shape by jogging and going through kenpo techniques during the day while Zoey was at school.

"Keeping up to them and managing the mischief. Zoey's a lot to keep up to, but toss in six godlings and a sorceress on top of Zoey and it's a full time job."

He was also a challenge in a different way, but she was not going to mention that.

"Access to that library for starters. I get to go back to school." Syd smiled. "And I get to tease my sister that I got a foot rub and leg rub from Simon Williams."

"Oh, ho! I see how this works! I'm the cheep entertainment!" He leans over her. He's not drunk yet, but he's within the ballpark. "You need to be taught about fun. I am -" He puts one hand to his chest while the other props him up over her. "So boring compared to the vast world out there." He gestures by taking his hand off his chest and gesturing to the TV across the room.

Syd at first chuckled and then he was leaning over her. Close. Too close. She could feel the breath get caught in her chest. "I assure you, Mr. Williams, you are not the cheap entertainment. Just merely something I can hold over my sister's head and torment her with."

She had just enough wine to think about leaning up and kissing him, but thankfully not enough to actually do it. Not to mention she was the biggest chicken in the world.

"Please. Your life is a lot more interesting than mine. I'm one who thinks libraries are the best things ever invented and I could spend days getting lost in a museum. You at least socialize with other people."

"If you can call them people." He leans back. The whole, "my sister finds you sexy," is never encouraging. He returns to her feet. "It's all work, Syd," he finally admits. "Every bit of it."

Syd sighed with relief when he moved back. Any longer and she would have lost all common sense and kissed him. "You still get out and socialize. The highlights of my social life in years have been the blind dates my sister insists on setting me up on." Even though all of the guys were so not her type. "She means well, but they're all her type of guys, not mine."

"So what do you do for fun if all those parties and socializing are work?"
