Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
WHO; Charles Vaisey && Melanie Roberts. (A bit of Stewart Ackerley)
WHEN; Thursday Morning, after study hall.
WHERE; An empty classroom.
SUMMARY; Just a talk.
RATING; PG for now~
WARNINGS; Rambling? Gosh we're the people that ramble so much.
STATUS; In progress.

There was a small hole in Charlie’s robes, just near the cuff so he could put his finger on it and try to push through it even though it was obviously not big enough to do so and he wouldn’t want to tear it more. It was just one of his ticks that he’d have whenever she was around. He’d been vaguely scratching his quill against some parchment to prevent Professor Snape from telling him to get to work, the only problem was that he didn’t have any ink in front of him, and he didn’t feel like actually completing the façade by simply bending down to grab some from his book bag. Charlie shook his head as he thought how lazy he was, and took a hesitant look up across the room only to see Melanie talking animatedly with Stewart Ackerley. Charlie sighed once and gave Malcolm an elbow attempting to get his attention.

Once he did so he gave a nod over in Melanie’s direction, and then mouthed the word “today” and then went back to his time wasting motions of pointlessly moving his quill. He’d told Malcolm about what had happened, and how he’d been avoiding Melanie all week. Charlie had even gone so far to ask a few other Slytherins in the common room if he’d be missed at study hall. But that was complete nonsense, why on earth would he try to skip study hall only to be so close to her during Care of Magical Creatures? Charlie had grinned and bared the class reluctantly, striking up conversation with every other classmate than with her so he wouldn’t have the opportunity to talk to her or vice versa. He still couldn’t believe that she thought he was joking. Honestly he’d laid everything out for her in black and white and she still couldn’t believe him. The only one that stood to lose anything from that was Charlie, and he had. All week he’d had been acting oddly and when asked why Charlie would just claim that his classes had had him busy and he hadn’t had much sleep. Malcolm was most likely the only one that noticed- the only other boy in the sixth year Slytherin dorms that would notice that Charlie was always either sleeping or doing class work or at class. The last week had been bleak, but Charlie had come to a resolution and, after a run through as to what Malcolm thought, he was going to do it.

He’d just ask her for a word. It was almost too logical, actually. He’d explain that yes, indeed he did think of her in that manner, no, it wasn’t a joke, and then ask her something that would hurt badly but he’d need to hear. If he let this ridiculous hope go on he’d drive himself insane. He’d been thinking ultimately too much lately, and even though to anyone else he’d look like the model student his thoughts were somewhere else entirely. The second that she just said that the feeling was not mutual he could go on- only in theory of course. Charlie gave Malcolm a grimace of sorts as he looked once more at Melanie and waited.

His bag was ready to go for the second that they were excused. Charlie was certain that he had to do it today otherwise he’d never work up the nerve again. He gave Malcolm a semi-sarcastic thumbs up as he took a deep breath and walked to the doors of the Great Hall to wait for her. Once he saw the recognition on her face of seeing him his stomach went into the automatic knots that they knew so well from being around her. Determined not to lose his cool like the other day Charlie reminded himself to breathe and gave both Melanie and Ackerley a weak smile. The two had been at the back of the group of students rushing to get out of Study Hall, and for that Charlie was grateful.

As soon as she was close enough Charlie gave another awkward smile and held onto the strap of his bag for dear life. She wouldn’t say no, would she?

“Hello Melanie, Stewart,” he felt a small shiver as he turned towards Melanie but tried to not let it phase him, “Could I have a moment of you time?”

If there was one day of the week that Melanie hated, it was Thursdays. With no classes to attend to, it seemed almost stupid that she still had to be present during Study Hall. She had an Herbology essay to work on, though, and she figured there would be no better time to do it than then. When she'd walked into the Great Hall, she had done so with her eyes fixed on the floor, carefully counting her steps as she went and only looking up once to survey who was present. She noticed with disappointment that Laura wasn't sitting on her usual spot at their table and briefly wondered what was going on with her friend; she seemed rather scatter-minded lately. Her disappointment quickly turned into delight (she really couldn't keep her mind focused on one thing for too long) when she spotted Stewart sitting a little way over at the Ravenclaw table. Without hesitation, she hurried over to greet him, deliberately ignoring the Slytherin table and anyone sitting there.

Even after almost two weeks had passed since that morning, Melanie still wasn't sure how she felt about the whole turn of events. On the one hand, she felt rather relieved that Charlie seemed to finally get the hint that she was tired of their petty arguments and would back off. She still had no idea why he had kissed her (and then proceeded to run away), but she reckoned it was probably some sort of prank... a dare, maybe. As much as it hurt to think about it, she wouldn't put it past the Slytherins to play those kind of jokes -- they had done something horrible to Justin, after all. And in the first week of school, no less!

On the other hand, there was a lot of disappointment. Disappointment at the realisation that this Charlie would never be her Charlie, again (the one that used to play hide and seek with her in her parents' backyard and would always let her win) or at the fact that they might never speak to each other again, even if it usually was through bickering. Melanie had fooled herself, for all of six years, into thinking that maybe he never really meant all the taunting and the arguments, but now she realised it was all just wishful thinking. The Charlie she knew when she was a kid had disappeared somewhere and in his place was now a whole different person.

What disappointed her the most, though (and she had a lot of trouble coming to terms with it), was that they had shared a kiss that hadn't meant as much to him (if anything) as it had meant to her. Her first kiss, too.

It hurt, a lot, but Melanie was determined not to let it get her down, any more. She had spent the worst two weeks of her life worrying and thinking over something that was rather pointless, acting weirder than usual and raising suspicions among her friends and it just simply had to stop. No more worries, no more doubts, no more 'what ifs.'

With that thought going over and over again in her head was how Melanie approached Stewart, greeting him with a wide smile. She spent the hour half-arsedly working on her essay while chattering with him about nothing in particular, careful not to get Professor Snape's attention whenever they approached a particularly funny subject.

When the bell rang and Study Hall was over, Melanie was quick to jump off her seat to get out of there as soon as possible. She began shoving everything into her bag, breaking her ink bottle in the process and spilling it all over her hands and the table. Groaning in annoyance, she wiped her right hand on her robes before taking her wand out and vanishing the mess she'd made. Her hands were still lathered in black, but she shrugged it off, simply wiping them on her robes again before picking up her bag and following Stewart towards the door. The Great Hall was almost empty by then, so it didn't take her long to realise that Charlie was standing right there on the entrance. Her face fell, along with her stomach, and her mind made quick work of coming up with an excuse to avoid him. Would it be too rude of her if she simply shouldered her way past him? She dismissed that idea immediately, knowing that avoiding him would not solve anything. She would simply have to let him know, rather politely, that she didn't want to hear whatever he had to say. That was simple. Piece of cake.

Her brows furrowed when he spoke and she automatically opened her mouth to say 'no,' but another idea struck her just in time and she closed her again. Looking from Charlie to Stewart and back again, Melanie let out a small sigh and shook her head. "Um, no. I-- I can't, I." She couldn't quite meet Charlie's eyes as she stumbled upon her words, "I told Stewart we would do, uh, something. In-in the kitchen. Right now. So, um. You know, sorry." She knew she sounded like a fool and not at all convincing, and she looked back at Stewart with wide eyes, hoping he would get the hint and get the both of them out of there, as fast as possible.

Talking to Melanie was probably the best thing for Stewart right now. There was just something about being around the cheerfully oblivious Hufflepuff that made him feel like nothing was wrong at all, and that nothing bad could ever happen. It was like they were both safe, because like they say—ignorance is bliss. So he was naturally excited when he saw her walk over to Ravenclaw table to join him. It might have been that he was preoccupied with thinking about the current situation with Dean, or the fact that Melanie seemed to have her mind elsewhere also, but they didn’t talk about anything remotely important. Stewart was glad for the light conversation, he didn’t think that he could have participated in anything other than that. And luckily professor Snape seemed to be keeping his eye on the Slytherin table, it might have been because the professors were still watching Harper. Heck it even could have been because out of all the tables at study hall the Slytherin table seemed the least productive when it came to coursework. Although it was common knowledge that Snape wouldn’t punish a Slytherin.

When the bell rang Stewart was ready to go back to the common room and just lie down. He could have easily asked Melanie what she’d want to do, after all the both of them didn’t have classes on Wednesday. But he’d rather just lay around in his dorm for the day; after all he hadn’t done that in a while. Always busy with something or another, Stewart hadn’t had time to be lazy this year. And right now seemed like the perfect opportunity.

“Oh Mel,” he said as he noticed her wiping her ink stained hands on her robes. He gave her a smile and reached over and turned her hand over looking at the mess. “I don’t think there’s anything we can do for it. But don’t worry, it suits you.” He let out a short laugh and then noticed that Melanie had a small dot of ink on her cheek. He shrugged it off and they walked towards the door much behind everyone else. It was only when he noticed how quiet Melanie was that he thought to look in the direction that she was staring in, an odd look on her face. Charles Vaisey. There wasn’t anything wrong with the Slytherin, he seemed nice enough. Though there was an odd thing between him and Melanie. It was almost like the both of them had a fascination with each other—whether it was Melanie being very annoyed with him or when Stewart would see the two actually getting along through the journals. Stewart didn’t really see why Melanie would look so displeased to see him though. The last that Stewart had heard the boy hadn’t committed any murders, or hexed any random first years, or punched anyone recently. Stewart had a slight feeling that Melanie wasn’t telling him everything but ignored it. He might be more open than most people but that didn’t mean that they had to be the same way.

When they had gotten to the front Stewart noticed that Charlie was acting just as tense as Melanie was. He could only notice, while Melanie was tripping over her words—something about the two of them doing something today—that Charlie was holding his bag so tightly that his knuckles were bone white. That was most definitely saying something since the Slytherin was very pale to begin with. Oh. Stewart grinned widely when he realized what was happening. Charlie obviously was nervous around Melanie, as was Melanie around Charlie. And from the Way that Melanie was tripping over her words something must have happened. Maybe through the journals, after all they could talk to people privately. He turned towards Melanie and raised one of his eyebrows. After all, how upset could she be at him? She was Melanie; she didn’t hold grudges for too terribly long.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about Melanie I’m not hungry at all,” Stewart tried not to smile and he turned towards Vaisey. “Besides I didn’t finish all my work for Astronomy, I think I should run off to the library, maybe try to catch someone to help me, yeah?” Stewart imagined Melanie’s face right now, and was expecting her to shove him or something to that extent, but luckily nothing of the sort happened.

“Anyway, I think you two should talk. After all I always say that communication is the key to…” the smirk formed on his face, as he put his hands on Melanie’s shoulders, avoiding her eyes, and softly pushed her in the general direction that Charlie was in, “good, healthy, relationships.”

Stewart nodded once and then walked briskly through the doors, holding his hand up in the air and waving goodbye to Melanie, without looking back. He would just go to a corridor or something. He couldn’t leave Melanie alone with a Slytherin, despite how nice he seemed, or the awkwardness between the two. He’d wait for Melanie—and her reaction to his betrayal. Stewart let out another laugh as he walked across the main entrance. This was much more fun than sleeping.

Charlie felt his stomach drop as Melanie started coming up with an excuse. He knew it was just because this was so far off, but he couldn’t help but wonder if it was because of the kiss. Of course it was, but… was it that bad? He shook his head, ready to say something that would most likely get caught in his throat and walk off. Though Ackerley—Charlie blushed as he heard him say something about a relationship. She’d told him. Oh Merlin, how many people had she told? Charlie wanted to groan but at the same time he couldn’t help but notice that the Ravenclaw was giving him an out. Melanie didn’t necessarily want to talk to him, and yet she was being ushered towards him, and before he knew it Ackerley was out of the door—although he wasn’t headed in the direction of the Library. Odd.

Charlie took a deep breath, determined to not loose his cool. This was his chance, he needed to explain, well, everything. He turned back to Melanie and attempted to give her a smile, though it didn’t really convey the right emotion as it ran across his face. He opened his mouth and closed it again. He couldn’t quite talk yet. He shook his head quickly, put on another smile and attempted again.

“I know that you don’t want to talk to me,” it was painfully obvious, “but uhm, I need to talk to you. There’s just, some things I wanted to explain, that couldn’t have been explained properly through the journals…” Charlie let out a breath and looked down slightly. This wasn’t going as he had planned. “Somewhere more private? If you don’t mind?” Charlie leaned forward, although Melanie was close enough thanks to Ackerley, and grabbed Melanie’s hand. A bit forward, perhaps, but this was important. He turned around and started to make his way through the main entrance, her hand still in his, headed towards the classrooms just through a nearby corridor. Charlie tilted his as he saw Stewart go into the hallway that they were headed. He supposed it was just as fair, he wasn’t intending to hurt Melanie, but he was used to people being hesitant when around him. He was a Slytherin, after all.

As he made it quickly towards the Hallway, Melanie behind him, he let out a sigh of relief as he saw that the first classroom was open. Maybe things were starting to go his way. Charlie went inside the classroom, and gave Melanie what was supposed to be a comforting look, as he closed the door, and started performing a few charms so that they wouldn’t be overheard. “You can sit down wherever, and you can leave at any time,” Charlie said over his shoulder, “I just… didn’t want anyone to hear what I have to say. The door’s unlocked though. And your friend is somewhere in the hallway. I don’t want you to feel like you’re trapped or anything.” He sighed at this. Would he have to defend himself so much if he were in any other house? He turned around, and placed his arms on a desk, leaning forward towards where Melanie had decided to be. He looked at her for a couple of seconds, no longer worrying about frightening her or looking conspicuous. If there was a chance she would leave he might as well enjoy this while he could. He took in her face, trying not to analyse the emotion on it, the colour of her eyes, the way her hair was slightly messy, a strand of it misplaced, and a small black dot on her cheek that could only be ink. He smiled and then took a deep breath. Enjoyment over, now it was time to take care of why he’d wanted to talk to her so much.

He turned and bit his lip as he started pacing back and forth though the classroom. Most of the unused desks had been shoved against the wall furthest from him, giving him some room to walk around, as if walking around would calm his nerves. It hurt just thinking about what he was about to say, but he had to say it. He closed his eyes, feeling like he was about to jump from a cliff. No, this was scarier.

He blinked a couple of seconds and then looked at Melanie, a significant distance was between them from the pacing he’d done. “Look, I just,” another breath, “I needed to tell you that I wasn’t joking when I said I fancied you. I honestly do, and I have for quite some time. It’s not easy to say,” Charlie rolled his eyes when he said this; of course it wasn’t easy to say, “but it’s true. That’s the reason why I kissed you. This isn’t a joke and this isn’t something just to see your reaction. I don’t even know how you could see this as a joke. I mean I’m the one putting myself out on the line.” Charlie stopped walking, and sighed before sitting on a desk near her and looking towards Melanie. “I—I wanted you to know all this, because I feel you needed to hear the truth, especially after the…” kiss. He had kissed her. Even if she told him that she loathed him, and that she never wanted to speak to him again, that one day would overshadow everything. Because despite the problems that had come of it, it was one of the best feelings in the world. Charlie paused and then looked up, making sure that his train of thought wasn’t ruined. There was only one other thing left he needed to say, after all. And it would painfully end whatever it was that they had. Who was he kidding, they were just friends, if even that.

Charlie stood up solemnly, and walked towards Melanie slowly, ready for the rejection, but also the closure. He’d said that he needed this, after all. He looked up, a sad smile on his face, and put his hands on Melanie’s shoulders. Hey, if this was going to hurt he might as well make it hurt as much as possible. He looked at her for a few seconds, and then swallowed once before continuing. “One of the main reasons I needed to talk to you is that I don’t think I’ll get over this—this foolish hope that you might like me too. I mean, you’ve made your opinion towards me quite obvious. But I still can’t get over this.” Charlie paused again and blinked. All he wanted to do was simply lean forward and kiss her again but that was out of the question. He could only inflict so much pain on himself. “So if you could do me the favour of just saying it. Saying that you don’t feel the same way. If you said it flat out, I would be able to get past this a bit easier, maybe. So, please?”

Charlie gave her a crooked smile, not wanting to take a breath. His heart braced itself for its end.
