OCTOBER 31, 1997
Masquerade Ball

WHO; The majority of the school.
WHEN; October 31, 1997
WHERE; The great hall and the gardens as well as the surrounding areas.
SUMMARY; Our man jack is King of the Pumpkin patch. Everyone hail to the Pumpkin King. This is Halloween. The Masquerade Ball.
RATING; R at the very most.
WARNINGS; The punch has been spiked with an Euphoria-inducing Elixir and a mild Babbling Beverage.
STATUS; In Progress.

The Great Hall was adored with the best that Charity Burbage could muster. Candles that would have usually kept the hall brightly lit were gone and replaced by pumpkins as well as a multitude of small white spheres of light that couldn’t be discerned as anything but stars from a distance. Despite the fact that the ceiling was overcast, nothing would stop the smile that Professor Burbage kept on her face. With a flick of her wand she placed the final touch on the decorations. She lowered a Jack-O-Lantern, on the center of the stage where the weird sisters would play, that was larger than her in her entirety.

With a quick shake to the Headmistress’ shoulders, she gave her yet another smile as she waved off Professor Hagrid who was attempting to bring more pumpkins into the room. They could go in the garden, after all.

“Would you kindly let the students in, Minerva?” the Headmistress shook her head disappointedly. She had been against this whole affair since the idea had popped into Charity’s head. But the simple fact that she was against the whole idea of it didn’t outweigh what her students had been through this past year. It would be for the best, they had earned this and more. Headmistress McGonagall gave a quick nod before heading towards the doors, a small breath, and then she opened them to find a group of masked students already gathered there, their eager faces reminding her why she had agreed to this in the first place.

With an honest smile, she raised her hands and projected her voice as Albus would have done if he were there, “Welcome, students, to the Masquerade Ball.”

Hermione and Ron: a walk before the ball

Ron found his ears heating up slightly from her complimenton his robes and he shrugged, giving her a somewhat nervous and lopsided smile. He looked down at the robes then back at her.

"Yeah, reckon they owed me for all the teasing they did with the last ones." He smiled again and then suddenly remembered the corsage her got. "Oh! Er, I got you something." He said, pulling it out from behind his back and careful not to knock the mask from his pocket. Holding the corsage out to her, he felt the pink on his cheeks remain. "Ginny said you might like this so..." He trailed off, looking at her.

Hermione started to say that the teasing was warranted since the dress robes he had worn previously were absolutely hideous and looked like they were from the turn of the last century, but held her tongue. Such comments, she knew, would either ruin whatever confidence he had found or would have caused him to get upset and for them to row. The latter was something she didn't want to happen tonight.

When he said he got her something, she couldn't help but furrow her brow and become curious. Why had he gotten her something; she hadn't gotten him anyway. "Oh," she sounded when she saw what it was and bit her lip. It was more of a muggle tradition to wear corsages than a wizarding one and she made a mental note to thank Ginny later.

"It's really nice, thank you, Ron," she said, untying her mask from her wand and holding onto it instead. "Do you know how to put it on? You're supposed to tie it to my wrist," she instructed.

Ron let out a sigh of relief when she said she liked the corsage. He wasn't quite sure about it but Ginny has assured him several times that it was a good idea and now he knew Ginny to be right. He made a mental note to thank her later.

"Oh, er, alright." He said, reaching out and fumbling with the ribbons on the corsage to get it on her wrist. His fingers brushed her skin several times and he felt like his skin was on fire at those spots. After several minutes, he finally managed to get the corsage on.

"So, er, walk then?" He asked, vaguey gesturing to the common room door. "Reckon we can leave the masks off until the actual ball starts. We still have a bit of time." He said, glancing at the watch he'd been given by his parents for his seventeenth birthday. He never really took it off.

As Ron stumbled to tie the corsage on her wrist, Hermione bit in her lip and resisted the urge to instruct him how to do it properly. He'd figure it out and would probably get annoyed if she harped on him about now doing it just right. When he finally got it on there, she reached down and turned it just slightly, admiring it for a second and smiled. It was perfect, she had to admit, though the colour was a bit off. Ginny probably mentioned to him that her dress was blue, but hadn't specified which shade of blue it was. Still, it was the thought that counted.

When he mentioned their walk, she nodded and started heading for the door, opening the portrait and stepping outside. "There's no point in wearing them now anyway. They're only required in the Great Hall," she explained, following the familiar path to get outside. She hoped it wasn't too cold; though her dress had sleeves, it wasn't exactly the warmest material ever made.

Ron was very conscious of how quiet it was as they walked together. It was still early and so not many people were out, most will still getting ready for the ball that would start soon enough. The air was crisp but not cold, not yet anyway. But Ron was prepared to offer Hermione his cloak if she needed it... as much as people may want to deny it, he was caring and a gentleman when he wanted to be.

A part of him knew that this was just attending a ball as friends, that was all he'd asked as anyhow, but a small part of him ignored all that and saw Hermione as his date and that part of him was a very happy part indeed. It was hard being in love with someone and not being able to say anything about it but at least he was here with Hermione. That counted for something.

"So, uh, you coming to the match tomorrow?" He asked her, making conversation and hopeful at the same time. Hermione didn't always come to the quidditch matches because she was usually so busy.

Though they were quiet, it wasn't an awkward sort of silence either. She felt perfectly content with him, though the butterflies in her stomach were still making themselves known on a regular basis. They were going as friends and though she had hoped it had been more, it was better that way. It kept them from being unsure and weird around one another as there were no underlying pressures.

Glancing over at him, she heard the hopefulness in his voice. "I'm actually not sure yet," she responded, looking back in front of her. "That would mean nothing would get finished tonight and most of the day tomorrow, and losing that much time will put me behind." It was something she had explained before and she knew that both Ron and Harry would be disappointed.

Sighing, she fiddled momentarily with the corsage on her wrist, thinking. "I suppose I could come, though if it lasts too terribly long, I might have to leave early." She hoped that would be a good enough compromise.

On one hand, having Hermione there might make him slightly nervous and distracted during the match but on the other and bigger hand, he wanted her there, needed her there for support. It was just soothing, calming almost to know she was in the stands watching them play.

"Alright, then." He said, a bit if disapointment showing in his voice from her answer of not knowing if she'd come and maybe having to leave early. He didn't want to protest and maybe get into an argument with her... not tonight.

Looking around, Ron admired the decorations and tried to focus on the night at hand and what Harry had said to him numerous times. Should he make some sort of move? Try to kiss her or something? He knew he didn't have the guts for the kiss part but maybe something a bit more simple. Take a deep breath and at the same time avoiding her eyes, Ron reached out and took Hermione's hand, pretending to guide her around some prickly bushes but not letting go afterwards.

Hermione noticed the disappointment in his voice, but really, that had been all the consolation she could offer him for now. Depending on just how much work she had left to do and how long the match lasted would decide how long she could inevitably stay. She'd tried several times to bring her work with her, but the noise level wasn't very conductive to studying, so she had given that up finally.

Caught up in her own thoughts, Hermione was surprised when Ron reached down for her hand. She looked at him, then at their hands, and back up at him again. She knew, she had to have known that he had done it under the pretense of avoiding some prickly bushes, but she suspected his ulterior motive. Not that she was complaining, far from it actually, and so, as she bit into her lip as her cheeks turned red again and just let him hold her hand. It felt nice, though now she couldn't help but try and figure out just what it meant.

Ron reached up and scratched the back of his head with his free hand, noticing the looks Hermione was giving him and becoming slightly nervous from them. Did she suspect? Trying to make the red on his cheeks go away, Ron looked at his watch again and saw it was nearly nine.

"Want to head to the Great Hall then?" He asked, quietly, knowing that once they reached there they'd have to let go of their hands to put their masks on and not looking forward to that part, but looking forward to the rest of the evening. "It's almost nine."

Hermione definitely suspected, only she couldn't bring herself to ask just what he was doing or why he was doing it. She didn't want to ruin it, whatever it was that he was doing. They might have only ever held hands when they were running about during one of their missions or something like that, but never just because. She rather liked it.

Nodding at his question, she glanced over at his watch. "We don't want to be late," she said, though it wasn't required to show up on time, it was just good form in her opinion. Especially since she was Head Girl.
