open to Tiernan
It was going to be a long night. It was late, and Rory was still at the office trying to figure out the ins and outs of a case. A man had been accused of aiding rebel wizards following Voldemort and hiding them, and it was Rory's job to find the evidence to back it up. He was going through a list of spells that the man had allegedly cast, and it was getting to be mind numbing. He'd had to cancel dinner with his boyfriend again, and he could tell that his boyfriend's patience was running thin.

Sitting back in his chair at the conference table he was at, he rubbed at the bridge of his nose and let out a loud sigh that turned into a huge yawn. He was exhausted, and all he wanted was to go home and crawl into bed for a while. But he couldn't leave yet, not until he found something solid to work with. He wasn't aware that Tiernan was even still there, he'd thought that the man had left hours ago so when he heard the office door open up and he glanced in the direction of the noise, he frowned a little bit. The last thing he wanted was a run in with Tiernan - especially tonight when he was all ready cranky.

Getting up, he decided to head to the breakroom to get himself a fresh cup of coffee and to maybe warm up the rest of his dinner since he was starting to get hungry. He was hoping to avoid his ex, and he was keeping himself busy by looking around in the fridge for his takeout container.

"Because I never needed to parade our relationship around." He called it a relationship now because hearing the anger in Rory's voice had at least made him grasp at taking this argument seriously rather than falling back on his old methods of passing everything off as a joke. "I wasn't going to be selfish and ruin your career. You couldn't have found another job. Your reputation would have been shot. Everyone would have thought you'd gotten the internship based on your willingness to fuck me rather than the fact that you're fucking amazing at everything you do."

He didn't like getting mad, the emotion didn't feel right on him. Sure, he could get self-righteous in court, but actually feeling pissed off was disturbing. Shiny happy people with perfectly put together lives and cavalier senses of humor didn't get pissed off.

"Parade our relationship around?" Rory repeated, arching a brow as he stared over at the older man. "You think that's what this is about - I wanted to show you off? I just wanted to be a normal couple with you. I wanted to be able to really share things with you, like take you to dinner with my family - or meet yours. I was tired of not being able to share this amazing part of my life with anyone else in my life - weren't you?"

"It doesn't matter whether I did or not. It wasn't possible." He didn't want to admit that at times he had wanted those things but ultimately had been too cowardly to really fight for them. Besides, the whole job thing had been a perfectly legitimate excuse for him to stay in a relationship without really letting himself be fully committed.

Waving Rory off, Tiernan aimed his wand at the Chinese food and knocked a warming spell on it instead of just using the damn microwave. It would have worked beautifully if he hadn't been so upset. Instead, it set the carton on fire and Tiernan let out a growl as he grabbed towels to damp it out.

"It was possible, you just didn't want it enough," Rory said back quietly as he watched Tiernan put the fire out. "I think you were just afraid that if we weren't hiding anymore, it'd be too real for you."

It hurt to admit outloud, but it was the truth. It wasn't as if Tiernan had an amazing track record for relationships. In many ways, Rory had felt that he simply hadn't been worth it - not really. It hurt, and he looked away with a heavy sigh through his nose as he clenched his jaw.

"You might not like Jeremiah, but he loves me," he added.

Tiernan shrugged like it was nothing. "I love you," he said after a moment and knew that it wouldn't matter at this point. "Jeremiah is just easier for you because he always does what you want. He waits for you when you want him to wait. He's romantic when you want him to be romantic. He's easy when you want him to be easy. I'm difficult and you never liked that."

His food was ruined and so was his night. "Why don't you go home to him? You're not going to get any work down now. I know you."

It wasn't as if it was the first time Tiernan had ever said those words to him, but still - they struck a chord in Rory that he wished hadn't been there at all. He felt a little guilty, because Tiernan was right. Jeremiah was sweet, but at the end of the day he just wasn't who Rory really wanted.

"He is all of those things, it's true," he admitted, "But he's not you."

With that, he turned to go gather his things up because Tiernan was right - he wasn't going to get a thing done now.

Tiernan just stayed in the break room for a long time. He felt a little satisfied that he'd efficiently chased Rory out of the office and right into the waiting arms of his new boyfriend. At least he felt like he had some sort of control in the matter.

But that was ass backwards and before Rory could leave, he walked into his office with purpose. "Stay here tonight," he said as he walked in without even knocking.

Rory had just gotten his things packed up in his briefcase and he'd been about to leave when Tiernan came into his little office. Frowning, he glanced up at him and turned away to reach for his jacket so that he could slip it on, along with his scarf.

"Why?"

"Because I think I could seduce you if you stayed." He offered his best joking-but-also-not-joking grin. It was clear just how little respect he had for Jeremiah. He downright hated the guy even though it wasn't fair. The man could have been a saint and Tiernan would have still hated him.

Taking a few steps forward, he leaned over Rory's desk. "I remember breaking this desk in with you." Tiernan was good at using sex like a weapon, especially when he didn't want to face the reality of the emotions attached to it.

This hadn't been the first time Tiernan had tried something like this, but every time it got more and more difficult to say no and to walk away. Rory wondered if Tiernan sensed that, too - felt that he was wearing Rory down.

"Don't turn this into some little game," Rory said softly as he turned back around to look at Tiernan. "You think this is funny, don't you?"

"I think everything is funny. My therapist says its a defense mechanism. And by therapist I mean you." He stared down at the oak of the desk, running his fingers over it. He could still hear the way Rory had whimpered, the look on his face, the way he felt. Exhaling a slow breath, he looked up at the other with an unmistakable expression. When it came to showing how much he wanted someone, Tiernan was not shy. He wore his lust all over his face. Unfortunately, he refused to show very much love there.

"You don't think an occasional angry fuck would do us good? There's no way he makes you feel like I can."

Rory just stared back at him in silence. Sometimes, or almost all of the time, talking to Tiernan was a lot like talking to a brick wall and it was entirely too frustrating for Rory.

"Goodnight, Tiernan," he said as he plucked up his briefcase and grabbed his wand, then moved to head out.

"Am I supposed to beg? Do you want me to beg for you to come back? Dump him and come back to me." He clenched his jaw and folded his arms across his chest. It sounded more like a threat than a request and he knew it had come out all wrong. He was digging himself into a hole here and he had no idea how he was going to climb back out.

Holding up his hand, he tried to prevent an answer to that. "Nevermind. I'll just go jack off in my office." There was that composed, snarky humor again. His face didn't even flinch now when before it had been a brief mask of desperation and bitterness.

Rory paused and stood by the edge of his desk as he stared over at Tiernan for a moment, as if trying to figure out if the man had been serious or not.

"If I did - leave him and come back to you, what would change? Nothing. We'd be in the same situation as before - even after I was done interning you didn't want to be honest about the fact that we were seeing each other," he added. "Would you really want to be with me or not? I don't think you can answer that," he said as he started to walk again and he moved around Tiernan.

Tiernan didn't let him get by him without clenching a hand around his upper arm. Just that grab sent a tidal wave of want through him. He'd spent so long memorizing Rory's body because he knew that he'd lose him eventually. Now that was working against him because everyone he'd been with since then had turned into Rory in his mind. But it didn't compare to the real thing.

"Stay tonight," he tried one more time, this time pressing his mouth in against Rory's cheek, back by his ear so that the words snaked inside. Tiernan was so manipulative, single minded. It made him a great lawyer, but sometimes it made him a shitty person.

Rory hated how his heart betrayed him, because the second he felt Tiernan's hand around his arm he just wanted to sink against the man and drop everything in had in his hands. No one compared to Tiernan, even if he could be a manipulative and selfish person - Rory loved him and not even Jeremiah came close.

"Goddamnit, Tiernan," he said softly, "Why can't you just let me go?"

It wasn't a no and that made hope explode inside of him. But as soon as that hope came, a sense of guilt rode along with it. "Sorry," he finally said quietly as he leaned his forehead down against the other man's shoulder. For what seemed like an eternity, Tiernan allowed himself to linger in that position. Every part of him wanted to force a kiss that he knew Rory wouldn't be able to resist. It would be theft.

Finally, his hand released the other, dropping away as he straightened up. He pushed a smile onto his face and made the universal sign for crazy by twirling his fingers against his temple. "Always a little stupid before trial."

wanting tiernan. what city should we say they're in? maybe new york city, and one of them can get offered a job in los angeles or san francisco?]

Rory closed his eyes and he let his head drop down to, so that his mouth was resting against the side of Tiernan's head. He marveled at how Tiernan could always smell so good, and he let out a soft sigh.

"You're so difficult," he laughed softly, the first break of cheer at all since their encounter had started, and when Tiernan pulled away Rory straightened up. "You'll do brilliantly, you always do."

New York sounds good! If Tiernan knows about the breakup he's going to throw Rory

a breakup party. Maybe he'll break into his apartment and set it up and it can be this big awkward thing :D]

The laugh made Tiernan melt, but he didn't show it. He just let his insides churn with heat and unfulfilled want. "Yes, I suppose I am rather brilliant." That's not exactly what Rory said but Tiernan was always willing to turn words around to suit him.

For a moment it was like nothing bad had ever happened between them and he gave Rory a smile. He was back to being professional, like a co-worker instead of a secret ex lover. "Have a good night, all right?"

all like - dude you can't just move across the country not allowed! haha ]

"All right," Rory said quietly as he tucked his wand away inside of the hidden pocket of his jacket. He ruffled a hand gently through his hair before he cleared his throat and looked to the door. "Good luck tomorrow," he added before he slipped out of his office and waited for Tiernan to do the same so that he could lock up.

tiernan would get into aan arguement and end up letting him go. then he'd chase after him a week lat

he'd be so upset. he might even get himself fired somehow. like he wouldn't show up for work]

Tiernan obliged, leaving the man's office with a heaviness to his step. At least he would have something other than opening statements to obsess over tonight. He could picture Jeremiah and Rory together. As soon as Rory walked in the door the other man would be delighted. Maybe he would think that Rory had come home just for him. Maybe ultimately Rory had.

It stung and Tiernan couldn't say anything else. Instead he left to go back to his own personal little isolation tank otherwise known as his office.
