A quiet night with a beautiful woman
Avery brought Indian food to the mansion along with a couple of books on archaeology. He'd been trying to learn more about it lately so he could have conversations with Sydney, though he knew he'd never match her encyclopedic memory. Still, listening to her talk so passionately about her love of history was a big turn-on. He loved her and enjoyed seeing her happy.

Once inside, he picked out a bottle of wine for them, and brought the food to the table, then went to go find Sydney.

Sydney was standing outside the closed door to the bathroom in her suite. Zoey was taking a bath and Syd was waiting patiently for her to get done. Well, not so patiently.

"Are you just about done?" she called. "You've been in there for thirty minutes."

"No!" came from behind the door.

Syd rolled her eyes. Typical. Kids never wanted to get in the bathtub, but once they were in, they didn't want to get out.

Avery comes up the stairs, hearing the exchange and knocks lightly. He points to the bathroom and silently asks if Zoey's in there. When Sydney confirms it, Avery nods.

Zoey does this at his house, too.

"Hey, honey!" Avery says to Sydney, loud enough to carry through the door.

"Gee! I have dinner all set up and I bought ice cream. Did Zoey go to hang out somewhere else tonight?" he asks.

	"I'm good. Just put in the paperwork to run for the City Council seat last week, so I apologize for not being around more." Avery says. "I'm glad I got to see you on your birthday." he says. Avery had to ask in case serum Simon had had any effect on her. He was glad to see it hadn't.

"Well, I brought you Indian food, partially to make-up for not being around and partially to make up for what I have to say next..because it's bad. I only just found out and I'm working around the clock to handle it." Avery says, bracing himself.

"My ex-wife took it upon herself not to sign and file our divorce papers last year. So, as it stands...I'm technically still married. Cecelia called me llast week saying she wants to reconcile. After I hung up on her three times, I thought she got the message.

Then she showed up at my house last night." Avery says.

	"Oh.../oh/. So what does this mean? A long drawn out court battle? Or something else?" Syd hesitantly asked. Things with Avery were going well, too well apparently, and the last thing she wanted was something to mess this up. Second chances were rare and she wasn't going let this one get messed up. "First and foremost, I love you and Zoey. You two are my world and I want you both in my life. But I can understand if this is too much to deal with. You didn't sign on for baggage or complications like this." Avery says.

"I do not want to reconcile with Cecelia, Syd. She cheated on me with a guy we went to school with and...I can never forget that or get over it. My lawyers are hoping they can get Cecelia to see reason before this gets ugly or public, but I don't know.

I don't want Zoey learning about this on TV. It could cost me votes in November, but I'm more worried about what this will do to her and to you. I...had to tell you, especially after what she tried to pull at the auction in New York." he says.

"Feel free to tell me you never want to see me again, if that's how you feel."

"She is," Syd told him. "/That/ seven year old is a handful. Don't forget I also have three Asgardians, one Celt and one half-Olympian to contend with. Griffen. And all the animals. I swear the universe has a twisted sense of humor."

She snuggled against his chest.

"Honestly, I've never thought about more kids. Or being in a relationship for that matter. Zoey was always my focus."

"Can I ask you a question, then?" Avery asks. "Would you be interested in another child someday? What about something...more than we have now?

Please don't get me wrong, Sydney. I love what we have now, the three of us. But I'd be lying if I said I didn't think about another little girl who looks like you. Or a little brother for Zoey to tell all of her awesome stories to." Avery says.

"Of course, we'd insure them both with Lloyd's of London and every other imaginable insurance to cover the crazy adventures they'll end up going on when they battle Lord of the 87th dimension and come home with a pet Munchasaurus that takes up three city blocks....

but they'd be /our/ kids...and we'd ground them together." he chuckles.

Syd went still and pulled away a bit. "I...I don't know about another kid. I've never given it thought and...it's a big step."

Her mind reeled. She should have expected this, but she didn't think it would be now. It caught her completely off balance.

"But as for what we have, I would like to see where it goes, Avery. I love you. Zoey loves you. I would like us to be a family in whatever shape it comes in."

Oh boy. He'd said something wrong.

"You realize that I didn't mean I wanted to have another child /now/, right?" Avery asks cautiously. "I'd love to, but only with someone who wanted to do the same, Sydney. I love you and it's not a sticking point.

You /do/ have a lot going on in your life and I don't want you to feel pressured in any way." he says, looking a bit embarrassed.

"How about dinner? I'm pretty sure we'll have a Small Lady asking about food and ice cream shortly." Avery says.
