The date was set, but it's not a 'date'
Vincent, having returned from breakfast from Andrea and cleaned himself up to face the remainder of the day, waited in the lobby of the Baxter Building. It was still a few minutes before he was to meet Asleif, but he felt it best to be prepared. She might not view the movies they were going to see as their intended genre, but they should prove reasonably entertaining. The gap in years between their productions should also well illustrate the pace at which mortals make advancements in their crafts. He was rather looking forward to the outing, but was prepared to cut it short if she made any misunderstandings about the 'just friends' arrangement.

Asleif had adopted mortal guise today, for appearances sake if nothing else.

Today was a day to be spent with a... friend. The word rolled strangely through her mind. First her inexplicable desire to see to the safety and happiness of the small mortal, now she was pursuing relationships that did not add to her power, her knowledge, or her pleasure. More importantly, she realized she actually was looking forward to the experience in spite of that.

What was happening to her?

Still, she did have to make an entrance, appearing in a puff of smoke.

"Greetings, Vincent," she said.

A twitch of his own fingers and the smoke dispersed. "Good day Lady Asleif." He bowed slightly, more out of habit for greeting her than true subservience. "Are you ready to depart? We have some time before the first feature begins, but I wanted to explain the basics of 'movies' to you if you haven't encountered them before on Midgard."

"I art ready if thou art," she said.

Asleif went on. "Mine father didst speak of them at times, but mine knowledge of them art... select," she said, choosing the last word carefully. "An explanation wouldst broaden mine knowledge, I art sure."

"They're, for the most part, recorded sounds and images of costumed actors' performances. A mechanical apparatus is used to project the images onto a large surface. The couplet of features we'll be watching today are both interpretations of the same historical literary figure, Dracula."

Asleif considered this. "Most... fascinating," she said, after a moment. "The marvels the mortals doth create art truly quite remarkable, given what the doth have to work with."

"Their minds are capable of astonishing feats, truly." He offered his hand. "Are you prepared to depart?"

Asleif took his hand. While she had a slightly lesser opinion of mortals than Vincent, it was not a point worthy of debate at this time. And loathe as she was to admit it, in this particular situation, he was actually right.

"I art."

With another spell, Vincent teleported them to the movie house the double feature was playing at. Back to back showings of Bela Lugosi and Gary Oldman renditions of Stoker's tale of Dracula. A nice way to display advances in cinema, and the various ways the tales were interpreted.

Of course, Vincent and Asleif knew full well that Dracula was in fact real, so they viewed them more like historical parodies.

Several frozen drinks, a bucket of popcorn, and a few hours later, they exited the theatre. Vincent obviously wasn't going to hold her hand, but he didn't feel the need to give her as wide a berth as previous. There had only been one passing incident during the screening of the second movie that he had to shoo her hand away as it seemed to be lingering against his arm. Other than that, no problems.

"So.. your thoughts?"

She'd already rated a decent approval from him for not speaking during the films.

"Most fascinating," Asleif agreed. "Mortals hath been upon this world but a fraction of a time compared to we immortals, but they truly have made their own mark upon it, and in far shorter a time."

She nodded, and went on, "Well-crafted tales, both. Though one doth get the feeling that those of the first didst try, perhaps, a bit harder."

Vincent smirked. "You sound like Grimm. He has some disparaging perceptions of modern actors as well." He glanced at his watch. "We've got a while before dinner. Was there anything else that interested you for this visit?"

Asleif considered her options. She had seen precious little of the city during her time in the city before the move to California.

"Whence I was here before, I heard much of a 'Central Park.' And didst regret that I didst not see it before we left."

Vincent nodded, checking his watch. "A bit late for the zoo, but it's a pleasant place to walk through anyway. There's plenty of art and craft sellers to gawk at, and the scenery itself to take in. Teleport or subway?"

"A mechanical contraption for transportation of people. Some would say New York's is the finest such system in the world. Are you passingly familiar with trains?" Vincent cocked his head inquisitively.

"Yes, this is much the same, but generally traversing shorter distances, and travelling through underground caverns and tunnels dug by man. One can reach most of Manhattan and it's sattelites by this. It's crowded, noisy, and host to a shocking variety of smells, but the view of the people of the city it affords is a sampling like none other." Vincent smiled. He may love the convenience of his magical transportation, but he loves the city more.

Underground? Like some common troll? What does he take me for!

Asleif, however, gave it quick, but thoughtful consideration. On the other hand, it wilt be an experience mine siblings cannot claim. Shouldst I survive, I wilt have... how is it put... One over on them?

"Then let us try this, "subway,'" she said.

Vincent smiles and bows cordially. "Then this way, Lady Aslief. But allow me to save us some of the distance.." A little polite flattery couldn't hurt. Even someone without his particular emotional magic bent could have picked up the momentary tension.

"--and show you the most impressive of these locales." A tug of her hand and a spell later, and they were outside Grand Central Terminal. He lead her inside, purposefully having arrived at the opposite end of the terminal from where they'd need to go, to be able to walk her through the central area with it's hurried throngs and star-painted ceiling, to say nothing of the decades old architecture.

He also didn't think Asleif would have much patience for changing trains, so the most direct route to Central Park would be preferrable.

Twas nothing compared to the halls of Asgard, but... Twas impressive all the same.

Asleif's eyes widened ever-so-slightly, almost imperceptively with, with wonder. New knowledge, new experiences, were always desirable things, and this was quite new indeed.

"Tis quite remarkable," she told Vincent. "I art glad thou didst suggest it."

Stopping only briefly to grab them each a chocolate filled croissant, Vincent escorted her to the subway. "It's one of my favorite places in Manhattan. The emotions run high here, with many arrivals and departures." He swipes them both through the turnstile and escorts her to the appropriate train to get them to one of the corners of Central Park, carefully leading her down the stairs.

Chocolate. Now there was something which, if all else were weighed, might well slightly tilt the scales in favor of Midgard's continued existence. Twas nothing like it in Asgard, she was loathe to admit.

She tenses, perhaps ever so slightly, as he leads her down the stares. Even for one as controlled as she, there were old fears, tales of the Trolls that lived in the dark. Her father... her father and mother Sif could cast them away, but the fear still briefly touched her, before she forced it from her mind.

The subway beneath grand central was hardly the dank caverns of Asgard. It was brightly lit, with street performers and vendors present, and the usual hustle and bustle of crowds with places to go. Vincent gave her hand a squeeze as he munched on his own pastry. "I will not let anything in this city do you discomfort, Lady Asleif." He knew his own ways well enough to avoid saying 'harm', as such a promise would only be an insult to her sensibilities and ego.

He escorted her onto the appropriate platform and through the doors as it opened. A gentle suggestion, made with a simple gesture, parted the crowds slightly to let her enter more easily, and find a seat. He sat beside her, smiling. "We should arrive soon enough."

Vincent understood her well, Asleif reflected, in ways in which her siblings clearly did not. She was most comfortable in his presence.

As she sat, she felt herself relax.

"Mine thanks," she said to him, then nodded slightly. "This be quite the experience, but I art enjoying it."

Vincent nodded, scarfing down the remainder of his snack as the train lurched into motion. "I would hope so. This is the greatest city Midgard has ever produced, and is the axis by which it turns, in spirit if not by cosmology." He states, just a little smug.

"I have no doubt that you, having trained under my mother, have empathic and emotional skills of a fearsome strength, but..." He smiles wistfully. "I wish others could truly see the city as I do. It is a living creature unto itself, and the people are it's moving blood. Emotions stream and flare across it like colors on a sunset, or waves on the ocean."

"'tis indeed," she replied. "The so-called 'City of Angels' in which we doth now reside, art a diverse place as well... but it doth not hum with the live that this city doth."

She nodded. "I wish greatly that I could do so."

Vincent smiles, perhaps a bit haughtily. "I should think, however, that I would not like it to come so easily to others though. I have dedicated my life to emotions and illusion. It would not sit well with me for others to outdo me without much struggle." He bumps a shoulder against hers, punctuating the friendly challenge and candor.

Once they reach their stop, he ushers her from the train. The individual station stop isn't nearly as impressive as that of Grand Central, but still very much alive. When they emerge onto the streets however, the early evening activity around Central Park and it's attractions is moving strongly.

Asleif nodded, a gesture of appreciation from one skilled spell-caster to another. "Mine own magics have concentrated themselves more in offensive purposes, though trickier art always quite dear to mine heart."

Her grandfather was the god of mischief, after all.

Asleif took in the sights with the kind of undisguised (however briefly) awe of someone seeing it for the first time.

"I'm sure you excel at it. I do prefer disinformation to dismemberment however." He grinned.

Strolling along the sidewalk, Vincent took his time taking in the latest art and 'handmade' items being sold. As luck would have it, there were a few exceptionally nice chalk drawings across sidewalk sections as they entered the park.

Strange, truly. Father and their mothers had tried to raise the children to be humble (often causing them to wonder where, exactly, they had gone with Asleif), and in this moment, the lesson seemed to have taken hold. No insulting or condescending comment passed Asleif's lips as she regarded the merchants and artists and other fellows of Central Park.

Clearly, she was slipping. Or perhaps simply less inclined to her traditional behaviors when her siblings were not around to infuriate her.

"Impressive," she said, speaking to an artist whose chalk drawing was still in progress.

They continued walking for a bit, until the stretches with artists and sellers were behind them, simply taking in the scenery of the park's pathways and bridges.

After a while, Vincent inclined his head. "Lady Aslief... if I may speak candidly." He cleared his throat. "You seem... at ease, and yet due to that very state you seem ill at ease."

Asleif bowed her head. "Thou art... most perceptive, Vincent," she told him.

"Truth be told, I art used to keeping others at a distance. Mine siblings, doth those who hath come with me, and those at home. Save thee and perhaps... a small mortal, I hath no friends.

I excused mineself from emotions, looked down upon the worlds as though quite on-high. And yet here, with thee, I find myself... humbled, giving in to softer emotions."

"I know not what to make of mineself."

"I.." His pace slowed slightly. "I can offer my sympathies."

He turned his gaze to her. "I would blight thee from this realm if you ever shared that I confessed such, but I know I art not easy to get along with." His exposure to her let his old speech slip back a bit. "I too, have scant more than my extended 'family' and Andrea to count as friends. And even my family I have often kept at bay. They do not see the world as I do. As such a fragile thing. I have tried to temper my impulses, but it is a difficult thing."

He leaned against the rail of a bridge, folding his arms and gazing across the water. "I have however, heard that friends make it easier." He affords her a smile. "We're much alike, you and I. I have no-one in my family that I can truly have commonality with, and... if you will pardon my presumptuousness, I would imagine that even if you have other siblings of Loki's line, none of them have your... particular bent."

"Thou art most correct," Asleif told him. "Though I too, wouldst never admit to any other than any might read me so well."

How to put into words what she felt? She was alone, different from any other of her family. She held affection for them, wouldst mourn them greatly were they to pass, even if she would never speak the words to them aloud. She did hope that they knew that.

Or worse, the jealousy that she felt? The others adapted to readily to the challenges of this strange realm, leaving her to feel ever more apart and separate than they.

"Thou makest this realm most bearable for me, Vincent. You have mine deepest thanks for that."

"Your friendship is thanks enough, my lady." He smiles quietly. "Bear that in mind."

He stood up, brushing his sleeves off of the dust from the rail. "I see much of us in each other, for all the good and ill that would entail. Perhaps we can learn from that."

Asleif's smile is small, but present. Warmer than one would have suspected (her siblings had often mused that her smile might frighten small children).

"We art much alike," she agreed. "All the better to meet as friends. Could be most... destructive, t'were it otherwise. But aye, as friends, there be much we canst learn from the other."
