BLACK OUT!
Gabriel was silently wording his opening lines for the next segment of news when the lights dropped. He lifted his head in a curious manner, having been standing away from the news desk and wondering if it was just a backdrop thing. It wasn't exactly peculiar, there had been men working on the spells earlier this week which had caused the lighting charms to flicker and crackle. He let out a breath and stood where he was, watching as nearly everyone around him performed lumos with their wands. Gabriel supposed he should as well, and wondered if this sort of incident would mess up the wireless airwaves. He didn't know much about the magic behind the WWN, but he supposed those who did would fix things.

He muttered to his assistant that he was going to go into the corridor to see if it was only their studio that had gone out, and she quickly skittered away to find the snack trays. Gabriel let out a breath, sighing at the thought of having to stay at work later because of this delay. He had dinner plans for Rachel and the children, he did not need the annoyance of pushing back reservations. As he pushed out into the hallway, he let out a groan at the darkness. His wand was soon out and he felt awfully tired, frustrated that his day was going to be spent in near darkness.

"Do you have light?" he called out to a figure down the hall, noticing a brighter light than that of a normal lit wand. "The spells have gone out over here, it's pitch---"

Why had he been so languid in his movements just now? Darkness overcoming the WWN studios? In the middle of Diagon Alley? Diagon Alley, which was the near breeding ground for death eater attacks. Gabriel wished he had the mindset to jump to the worst possible conclusion, but the spell the cloaked death eater shot off sliced him across the side of the head, knocking him out cold and to the ground.

If he didn't die today, right now, Rachel was going to kill him.

OOC: OKAY! Magical places affected: Hogsmeade, Diagon Alley, St. Mungo's, The Ministry! The weather is terrible outside all of these places! Death Eaters are already THERE ready to get in and out as fast as possible! Lighting spells are down, candles won't be lit (all of these places had 'workers' messing with them earlier that were really death eaters foiling them. HOME INVASIONS---many wizards live in muggle areas, so they COULD be using electricity, and so on. SO....I will add with any other info/questions, just...GO :O Narratives are super welcome :O

It's for Friday! But Leigh is leaving tonight annnd I know we all work/have plans so. YOU KNOW HOW I AM :)

Tiberius wasn't concerned about the storm right until the lights went out. "What the-" he muttered as he tried to navigate his way around the halls where his old office was. This was the Ministry, they used magic. They didn't have power outages due to storms. "Lumos" he said pulling out his wand glancing around carefully, except the offices seemed to be empty. People tended to skip out earlier on Fridays.

"Aw Tiberius, you haven't forgotten about us plebeians down here after all." Theo drawled leaning back on his desk. "Such a good boss, coming check on us."

"Nott." he addressed him coolly. "What are you doing just sitting in the dark. You need to--"

"Ah-ah, I really don't think you are in any position to be ordering me around, or have you already forgotten what happened the last time we were left alone in the dark." Theo smirked pushing off his desk and stalking closer to him. "And it just so happens, I like the dark." he said distracting him, disarming him with an nonverbal spell, laughing as he watched Tibs fumble for his wand. "You may be all high and mighty behind your desk making your laws, but let's be honest, when it comes to a real life duel, you don't stand a chance."

"You should really think about what your are doing. You won't get away with this." Tibs said pulling every last ounce of courage he had left, standing there wandless.

"Oh I have. Been thinking about putting you in your place for ages. Mudbloods shouldn't be making laws for a world they don't even belong in." Theo just laughed again as he grabbed Tiberius' arm, shoving his wand against his throat. "And what exactly are you going to do? Arrest me? Let's go have some fun." And then they were gone, leaving the offices in a eerie silence.

Brier!

2010-08-05 03:27 pm UTC (link)
Sarah tried not to lean too far over the counter, in fear that her elbows would slip and she'd clunk her chin into the wood. It was hard not to, though, because Brier had stopped by the Three Broomsticks before picking up his son, and he was talking to her. He had helped her out so much with the visa situation and then he'd shown up for a little bit at the Equinox book release (which had thankfully not been affected by the new ministry rulings---) and then he'd invited her to his friend's baby's party!

Phew, that was a whole lot of stuff to be smiley about.

Sarah listened excitedly as Brier talked about his day (she had asked! Being a solicitor was so interesting to her!), grinning widely as he went on. The weather outside was awful, but hopefully it would clear up enough for him to pick up Rory without much of a mess. And maybe she could take her break around the same time and just casually offer to walk down the street to the daycare with him! That would work splendidly!

"I really would love a job in the Ministry," she said, but before she could the lights above their heads dimmed out quickly. All the flames of the candles were blown as the wind from outside threw the front doors of the restaurant open. Sarah frowned, jumping back from the counter to hurry around and shut the doors, "Looks like we're not in Kansas any---"

Her joke was lost as some of the patrons leaped out of their seats and began to scream. Sarah had no idea what could be causing such a commotion, but the cry of death eaters made her freeze in place. What--what---her eyes caught sight of the cloaked figures through the windows and she gasped in shock, "Shut the doors!"

Brier had no idea why he was going on and on about his work, really it wasn't that interesting but she'd asked about it and now he found that he couldn't stop, even though he was making his boss look like a jerk and while Brady might be that wasn't really the impression he should give her but there really was no backtracking when his mouth was just going and he really didn't even know what he was talking about at this point, explaining some form that you had to fill out in order to get other forms and when he was done with the explanation, Brier looked a little embarrassed that he'd explained that all.

"They could always use secretaries - " Brier was about to explain when the lights dimmed and he spun around at the screams. No. NO NO NO! This was like last year and he was away from Rory. Brier rushed up behind Sarah and tried to push past her, "No, let me out, I have to get Rory."

Rory! His baby! Sarah watched as Brier rushed by her and---he couldn't go out there! There were death eaters out there! She froze in place, knowing that it was all too risky to go out there and down the road to the day care. But--they wouldn't hurt babies, right?

Sarah wanted to hit herself as she forgot where she worked. The Three Broomsticks, whose owners and daughter had been slain for no reason at all.

Without thinking any further (she didn't do that much, think before she did anything---it explained a lot), Sarah rushed after Brier into the street, turning around only to lock the doors of the Three Broomsticks to give the customers inside some sort of fighting chance. Oh--oh, Berk was going to kill her if she didn't die in the streets.

She didn't call out after him, she didn't want to be a distraction, but Sarah ran as fast as she could to catch up to Brier, clinging onto his arm to pull him toward the buildings to create some sort of cover.

Liz spun happily in her seat, "Annnnd after this, we'll have the newest United wife in with us for a chat, Bess Fawcett!"

She waited until the commercial had begun before spinning again, and Liz almost fell out of her seat as the room went black. Oy. Had she sparked out all the spells, again? Sometimes that happened when she got too excited and used all the fun sound effect charms they had conjured for her. Liz let her seat slowly move with the little momentum it had left, waiting for the lights to come back. It had been terrible all week, and she really wanted to get this interview with Bess over with---she had noticed a certain bump that she would definitely question the woman about.

The door of her studio opened and Liz spun, hoping for some light. Her wand went up with a twirl and she was proud at her wordless magic--a pride that quickly dissolved at the sight of the death eater in her doorway, the door shutting closed behind him.

Liz shrieked, hoping to everything above that someone would hear her and save her and---well, she could fight back----She hurled a severing curse at him, hoping it would--do something!

The Order had gotten too cocky lately, thinking that as long as the direct members weren't involved in something then everyone that they cared about was safe. The fact was that nobody was safe as long as they supported anyone but the Dark Lord, and it was sure as hell time that the Order began to realize that. Grayson had volunteered happily to take special measures with the blonde girl in front of him, Liz Bell. She was well-known among the circle as being close friends with many an order member.

How unfortunate for her.

He scoffed at the shriek -- of course he'd had the foresight to put up a sound barrier. His brother's ... unfortunate death had actually begun to make him more cautious with his dastardly deeds. Grayson took a few long strides forward and did his best to deflect the severing curse, continuing his walk toward Liz.

"This isn't something you can stop," he huffed from beneath his mask, already feeling his skin prickle.

Liz let out another strangled sound as she backed up against the counter. No, no, no this couldn't be happening this---she didn't really know anything about the Order and---and how would the death eaters know, anyway! How---Liz knew that James and Lily had been super tight-lipped about their location and stuff, she didn't even know where her best friend was living these days so---why Liz had never thought that the death eaters knew more---

Her mind was too frazzled to do much thinking. For someone who talked for a living, she couldn't find anything to say in her frantic state. Liz held onto her wand with both hands tight around the grip, but it felt like all seven years of schooling at Hogwarts had been completely washed from her brain.

"Expelliarmus!" Her thoughts went back to one of the first spells she'd learned, but Liz knew that it wouldn't do much in the confined space. Even if she did manage to get the death eater's wand from him, he could still overpower her with a few steps. Liz's breaths became short as she reached a full-on panic.

"Please---please, I have a daughter---all I do is--talk gossip." Liz had enough sense not to deliberately give away her small amount of knowledge about the Order of the Phoenix. She wasn't brave enough to fight for them, but she was brave enough to keep her loyalties in check. "What do you want?"

Grayson laughed from beneath the mask, pleased with the way the mouth of it distorted the sound into something far more sinister than his throaty chuckle. Had she honestly just used that spell? The spell of stupid school children who honestly thought that taking away a Death Eater's wand would do something to stop them?

He had already had enough of her sniveling, however. A few large steps were all it took to close the space between them, and he wrapped a gloved hand around the wrist that held her wand. He squeezed until he was sure he heard bone grinding on bone. "You would think that a woman with a daughter would have more sense than to put herself in the middle of a war. Not very smart," he tutted, moving in close enough she would likely not be able to try to kick him away.

"And a liar, too. What I want ... is for you to suffer. You'll be begging me to make it end soon enough."

"I'm not!" she let out before she could even think. She wasn't a fighter! She'd been offered the role and she'd declined. She knew nothing of value! She knew--nothing! The only thing that Liz had done to help the Order was the entrance behind Fortescue's and that had been compromised! By---whoever! She didn't know!

Liz began to tug and pull and scream to try and get out of the death eater's grip but to no avail. Tears began to stream down her eyes as she realized that she was most likely going to die, right now, and vivid images of the last time she was held against her will resurfaced with great ferocity. Evan Rosier was dead, but everything he'd done to her hurt just as much as this death eater's hold on her.

"Please, please," she cried, continuing to tug and pull even though she knew there was no chance of escape. Katie, her Katie--Ian, oh, Ian---

Oh, this girl was really starting to get annoying. All the shouting, and he was sure that the charm had worn off by now in this area ... he couldn't have her making this much noise.

Grayson tutted again and brought his hand up to strike her harder across the face, hoping to knock her into unconsciousness. That would make things oh so much easier on everyone. He gritted his teeth, hoping to feel her body go slack against him so he could transport her out without too much more fuss.

Dedalus!

There was a distinctive crackle of the lights going out. Their complex was mostly muggle, save for a family on the first floor, so the Diggles (hee, she loved saying that) had experienced their share of blackouts. Of course, they had the ability to use their wands and other magical sources of light to get them through the times of darkness, so it had never been an issue.

Eliza let out a breath as she reached for her wand, having been writing out short notes for their family and friends about their new location. The move was something they all desperately needed, and with Dedalus' concerns about the Order (Eliza had kept herself in the not-so-literaly dark about their activities, as it helped her sleep at night not to know) they were going to be very careful about who they let know about their new location.

She frowned when her usual spell to light up the candles around the kitchen fizzed and did not produce any light. That was---strange, very strange. She tried again, and it almost felt like something was invisibly blocking her. Her lumos worked, and Eliza stood, calling out from the kitchen, "Dedalus?"

Since when did traveling in Diagon become such a life risk? All Adrian had wanted to do was go to Gringotts and return home. A max twenty minute errand. But no, there had to be an everlasting darkness outside, with people fighting and death eaters; he didn't remember them being this daring before. This sort of reminded him of certain occurrences in Portugal that he had heard about, but never seen. He had obviously never been a target. But it still gave a very eery resemblance to---

Adrian dropped to the ground as a shot of red light barely missed his head. Really? He had half a mind to be more aggravated than concerned for his life at this point. This was just--- intolerant in every way. Intolerance that made everyone inconvenienced and Deus he was a Quidditch player for fuck's sake! What did he have anything to do with the political-- social-- events happening here?

After a few more moments of clamoring, Adrian finally grasped a door handle. Wrenching it open, he figured being inside any shop or store would be better than the street. Or at least he hoped. Breathing heavily for a few moments, he tapped his wand to create a beam of light.

"Hello?"

"No----NO---no, dear bloody GOD!"

Noah lit his wand as quickly as he could, but it was as if the ink he had spilled when the room went black had a mind of its own and was now sinking deep into the rolls upon rolls of parchment he had just finished setting. The littlest of smudges could change the coordinates of every galaxy, they could make it seem like there were new solar systems and----and the bloody new plans for the star show and----"Fuck! FUCK, fuck----"

He stopped his frantic movements as the window looking out toward the alley began to light up in a vast array of colors. Noah froze, watching the red, blue, purple---the green fill up the window panes. He rushed across the room and pressed his face to the glass, shocked at the fighting and---he shouldn't be shocked, but the lights going out could not be a coincidence, and--the middle of the day! Just like the earthquake---too many of the supposedly good people in this world were working for You-Know-Who and---

Noah's wand dropped its light at the sound of a voice, doors opening down in the main entrance of the planetarium. Fucking---hell! The door of his office had been open the entire time, whoever was down there had probably heard him cursing up a storm, so---so----He peered out quickly, hoping that they hadn't come up the stairs---

"Hell." He let out a relieved breath at the startled looking stranger, and Noah wasted no more time. He ran down the stairs as quickly as possible, past the man who looked just as bewildered as Noah felt, and to the front doors. He quickly let out the string of locking spells he performed on the planetarium each night. When he was sure he'd remembered them all, Noah backed away quickly, looking at the man, "Come on, come on! There's a back way out--"

Adrian felt as if he had jumped out of his own skin; this new person's sudden presence jolted him into a new state of shock and panic that he hadn't previously felt. Where had he come from? Brows high, Adrian gripped his wand tight. While attempting to calm himself he jerkily began to move his legs forward. Though, he stopped after a few steps out.

A back way out where? Onto another street? Going onto the streets wasn't a very good idea. While this darkness was not ideal, out on the street was even less so. Adrian began to shake his head. Obviously this other man was not a death eater, but that still didn't change the fact he had no idea who he was, and therefore there was still the issue of entrusting for others to make decisions including his life in unstable times like this one.

"I don't think---" Adrian started in an unassuming tone, now having completely come to a stop. Not thinking of how rude it would be, he raised his wand to get a better view of his new companion. This was very strange. Giving a weary glance over his shoulder, he shook his head at the sounds becoming louder outside. "Are you sure?"

Noah stopped for only a second to look back at the random stranger whose life he was going to save. He didn't want to follow him? Fine. Noah let out a shrug and continued through the hallway of the planetarium. The back entrance to the building led out to a muggle street, and the second he got out there he was going to crack, get out of there. Fine! He was going to be fine, he was going to get back home to Odette and the kids, and---

"Fuck," Noah let out, his hand on the door. He couldn't just leave. What if the death eaters got through the wards on the door? One, he'd have a dead body he'd have to clean the blood stains out when everything opened again and---two, he'd feel really, really guilty for leaving him behind.

Noah ran back, looking around for the stranger, wondering if he'd begun to wander. His wand was lit again, and he winced at the flashing colors through the row of doors leading into the planetarium. "Hey! HEY! Come on! My wife's gonna kill me if I die in here so---come on!"

His gut instinct about this man had been right--- completely unreliable. Had he actually just shrugged at him as he ran away? What kind of person did that in the middle of war time! In Portugal no one would have ever done that. Someone would have at least tried to help you a little before running off. But no, all he gets is-- is-- this was one of those times where Adrian was a firm believer in karma.

Pulling his lips in tight, Adrian attempted to bring himself back to the issue at hand; finding a good place to lay low until the fighting outside was broken up. That would be the safest thing to do at this point, most definitely. So keeping his wand raised high, Adrian began to look for stairs to lead either up or down. He had found stairs and got halfway up them when he heard shouting again.

Oh, so he had returned? How thoughtful. Adrian had half a mind to stay where he was. But, of course, staying alive did override that a bit. Jumping back down the stairs, he gave the man another weary look. He would say the biting comment he had on the tip of his tongue for later.

"Is it safe?" Adrian asked quickly as he started to follow anyway.

"Yes it's safe, I wouldn't have gone back there in the first----"

Noah ducked as the glass of the front doors of the planetarium burst and shattered, rays of spells, jinxes, and hexes shooting in from the street. Holy shit, holy shit, they were actually going to come in here! Noah felt his body seize with stress and fear, knowing full well that the little dueling experience he had would do nothing against angry death eaters. Noah's breathing became sharp and quick, and he jolted again as a door burst off its hinges. No, no, they were coming in, why would they want to come in, what would they want with a bunch of space toys and astronomers and---

"GET DOWN!" Noah shouted, as a rather burly death eater hurled a crackling purple hex down the hallway he and the random stranger had just started down. Noah gave the much larger man a shove and let out a howl as the spell hit his shoulder, spinning him around and into the wall.

Dizzy, dizzy, everything was shaking and fuzzy and he tried to wobble forward, mumbling and muttering as the spell had been some twisted form of the confundus, "Jupiter's in the---Terry doesn't like----It's moons are---Odette's got---Anna's my---" Noah faltered, slipping back and down against the wall.

What was happening! What was happening--- so many different things were occurring at once that Adrian could not keep up. The glass was breaking, they were running, there were spells, his heart was beating faster than it ever had before; his head was pounding, making it feel impossible to understand. Just a few second ago he had been fine... relatively anxious, but fine! Now, however--

Adrian let out an instinctive shout to his new companion, watching as he flew out of what little light source they had produced. Wait-- wait--- no, this couldn't happen, the man had come back for him, meaning they were both going to get out, because no way his career was ending here of all places because he died in a riot. Fumbling up from the ground, Adrian jerked his wand to turn the light off. The death eaters were getting closer, but maybe he had enough time to reach and get---

Just as he took one step to the side, another purple spell hit Adrian straight in the back, sending him flying to the other side of the room. Disoriented, his sight spun, until he landed head first into a corner of the room. Pain erupted from his back, feeling as if he had been shoved into an awkward box. But that didn't last too long as he quickly drifted into unconsciousness.

Ralph!

Her heart sank into her stomach as the lights shut, the quiet of the waiting room feeling even heavier on her shoulders. Miranda blinked to try and adjust her eyes, but she actually had some sense to light up her wand and that helped a little. Bugger--this couldn't be good. There were a lot of people admitted to St. Mungo's at any given time, and right now, Greta was in a room after being bitten by some bloody snake that Miranda had only managed to kill because it had snuck behind the book case and she had--squished it with a spell shoving the bookcase to the wall. Gross and terrible and---

"Brilliant," she said with a sigh, pressing back into the seat and leaning onto Ralph's shoulders. They'd been on Greta duty for the past hour or so, with Kingsley standing a silent guard by her bedroom. Her family was constantly in and out, of course, but Miranda didn't mind. Greta was her roommate and one of her best friends for the longest time, so. "Should we stay here, or---"

Miranda let out a nox at the sight of a red jet of light shooting down the corridor right in front of their waiting area. Greta's room was down that way! She turned to Ralph fearfully, pulling her legs up off the floor as if it would help her disappear.

Ralph had experienced blackouts before, but never in the wizarding world. He didn't even know that they could technically happen. It was all magic, wasn't it? And magic didn't run out did it, unless--- unless someone interfered with it. Ralph perked up just as the hallway near them lit up red. Here? Death Eaters were-- it was a bloody hospital, people were already injured what more did they want? A sinking feeling filled him as his mind jumped rather quickly to the progressional conclusion.

So then--- for a brief moment, Ralph had trouble deciding how to act next. Stay or go, stay or go, fight or flight--- Miranda was with him. He couldn't--- he had to get her out of here. Then he would come back for Kingsley and Greta. In all honesty, Kinglsey was probably a lot better off then he would be; being an Auror really helped with that. And Kingsley had yet to leave Greta's room, so---

"We should leave," Ralph whispered tightly, his hand gripping hers more firmly by the second. Moving slowly from his chair, he contemplated where to go next. The lift? No, no, that was too close quarters. So that left the stairs. Not so great of a choice either; he had heard warning stories from Order members about battles happening in the stairway of Mungo's. But how else could they get out? At the very least it was only one flight...

"Come on," Ralph spoke quietly again, imagining the layout of the room.

Where were they going to go? Miranda didn't have much experience dealing with death eaters, but it wasn't as if she---she knew it go in the opposite direction, at least! But they could be anywhere! At the peace rally, at least it had been an open space, when she was attacked in March, Macnair had made sure she could see him, but right now they might as well have been blind. Forget about the lights being off, if the death eaters were already in the hospital, that meant they had planned to be there, that they had already studied the area and would be able to move in and out faster than she or Ralph ever could.

She let Ralph lead her up, but she couldn't stop herself from repeating over and over in her head that this was a bad, bad idea. The death eaters were here for specific reasons, they wouldn't have---they wouldn't be here already if it was a random raid, if----Miranda stared at Ralph's back, wondering what exactly his plan of action was. He was a member of the Order of the Phoenix, they were the ones that were running into the mess alongside the aurors and hitwizards. But unlike the officials, the Order didn't have the training to defend themselves, they were just---lucky.

And even then, a lot of them didn't have much luck at all.

"What about---an empty room?" she whispered, all the thoughts about the Order members being idiots rushing away as she thought of a way to help protect Greta. This was going against every instinct she had, but---Miranda didn't want to hide. "To---keep watch? But out of the way and--"

She cringed at the shouting down the corridor, but she couldn't see what was going on.

What else could they do? Ralph felt poorly for turning away, but they were defenseless at this point. Miranda was defenseless. He at the very least-- he was the one that was a member of the Order of the Phoenix, wasn't he? He should stay-- would stay! But first he would get Miranda out of here. And then-- and then contact the Order to let them know that Mungo's was under--- the Order! That was the first thing he should have done! Almost immediately, Ralph stopped moving to raise his wand high in the air. Would this be a bad idea? A patronus produced such a large amount of light...

Ralph closed his eyes for a moment, ignoring the spells and shouting from behind them. The-- Order had to know. There was just as equal as a chance as no sing him produce his patronus to someone seeing it. So---

"Expecto Patronum!" Ralph spoke as quietly as possible, focusing on the memory of the first time he had found out he was a wizard (and believed it). A fat raccoon sprouted out of his wand, multiplied, and shot off into different directions n the darkness. He really hoped that had been the right move to make.

"Downstairs--- and out--" he rushed, gripping onto her hand a bit more with every passing second that they grappled for the door in the dark. Ralph suddenly wished for his invisibility cloak, despite knowing that the darkness cloaked all of them to that affect.

Somehow, somehow they had found the door to the staircase. Miranda couldn't even feel her hand anymore, with how hard they were gripping at each other, and all of her other senses were working on overload. Her eyes were starting to adjust as if it were light out and her ears were catching every zip and zing of the spells bouncing around the corridors.

They opened the door of the stairwell slowly, as quietly as possible, and Miranda stuck her feet to the ground to stop Ralph from hurrying down the steps before she could take a good listen to the echoes of what might be going on. It sounded clear, but Miranda couldn't expect that to last long. There was no way they would be the only ones trying to duck out through the stairwell. They would have to try though, right---

"Wait---" she let out in a quick breath, the sound of shouts bouncing up the walls of the stairwell. Miranda tugged Ralph roughly toward her, surprised by her strength. It must have been the adrenaline, because there had been many times when she had tried to do the same thing and had failed. Miranda pushed them into the corner, suddenly realizing that their chances of escape were ridiculously and terribly thin. "Don't, don't--don't go down there, please---we'll find another way--"

How were they going to get out of this unscathed? Even if-- even if they somehow managed to get down the stairs, there was still the issue of the no-doubt infested first floor. And then there would be outside, which again had duels and fighting going on... they were trapped! There was no way out. Legitimately no way to maneuver in the dark here! How-- how--

As Miranda shoved him into the corner, Ralph's thoughts became increasingly desperate. How would this all end? By-- by--- he pulled his lips back tight at the thought he couldn't even finish. It was bad, very bad, their situation was not idea--- Miranda pressing herself closer up against him suddenly washed away all his negative thoughts.

No, he refused to die here, in a hospital of all places. This was not how it was all meant to end, and he wouldn't-- he wouldn't! They were going to get out of this, it was just a matter of thinking quick enough. Blinking quickly (though in this atmosphere the affect seemed lost), he began to nod.

"Yes," was all Ralph could muster quietly. It was even possible the people on the lower level would help. Unlikely, but they could still wait here and see.

Miranda felt like shutting her eyes and hiding in the front of Ralph's shirt, she felt like crying, she felt like shaking and screaming because---she was a Gryffindor, yes, but she was not meant for this. She was not meant to fight, she couldn't understand the need to fight. She'd gone out to the peace rally and in her near mania she had performed admirably...but the moment she had gotten home she'd cried, broken down into tears and couldn't stop for hours. Miranda just could not be part of the war in this manner.

But--it would hurt more to just stand here, beside Ralph, and crumble. He was the only thing that she'd give her life for, and if standing up and pulling out her wand right now meant that he could have another second on this Earth----Merlin's beard, she'd become so morbid and dramatic (in the serious ways, not the childish manners she had been so prone to--), but it was the truth. Right now, in this war, Ralph was what she was fighting for, so--

Miranda pulled out her wand, her other hand wiping some tears away as the sounds coming up and down the stairwell grew louder, as the lights continued to bounce up and down the walls and creating great billowing shadows.

"I'm sorry I gave your ring back," she said, keeping her eyes on the stairs to watch for the first dark cloak of the impending death eater attack, but her free hand went to grab Ralph's, "I'd marry you tonight if I could--"

Miranda feared the finality in her voice, but all of their exits were blocked! Any route of escape was filled to the brim with death eaters. She had to let him know.

Donovan!

Danielle tugged at the color of her green robes, irritated that she'd been scheduled for rounds today instead of being on the field. She knew she'd officially come back as a healer, and was an on-call mediwitch because it seemed like there was a disaster every other day here, but...to actually have to fill out charts? Write reports? She grew frustrated just thinking about filing the bloody charts.

The tight tie she had around her hair had to come out if she was going to deal with the massive headache this work was going to bring her. Danielle let her hair fall as she dropped her gaze down to the counter in which she was working. It was better than sitting at a desk, or in the break room because at least there was bustle, like something was actually going on----

Her charts went flying around her as someone grabbed roughly onto her wrist, pulling her down the corridor. Danielle let out a sharp yelp at the sight of Donovan Rookwood tugging her away from her work and the counter, and she yanked her arm back but couldn't pull away from his grip.

"Donovan! What---are you doing?" He looked to be on a mission of sorts!

“Shut up…”

For the first time since she had returned, his words, though not the most pleasant of phrases, were not laced with venom, or spite – instead, they relayed the urgency that she remain quiet for the time being. He would have loved to stop and explain why, out of no where, he was dragging her through the hallways of Mungo’s after trying so desperately to avoid her for the last couple of weeks, but that wasn’t an option. There wasn’t any time, because if he stopped to explain, the short window of time he had would go to waste.

This wasn’t the first time he had been informed by his older brother that there were big events in the work, if only because Augustus didn’t want Donovan being caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. He never told him anything major, just…hints of where to not be at certain times.

Mungo’s was on that list…and immediately, his mind went to one healer in particular. One halfblood healer, who wouldn’t stand a God damn chance if she was caught in the crossfire, or even tried to take on another wizard in a duel – especially if that wizard was a Death Eater.

Donovan really knew more than he should… It was one thing, to not know anything and find out there had been an attack on Mungo’s, but knowing and just not doing anything? That was something he couldn’t do.

Looking around, Donovan entered into a closed off ward of the hospital, continuing to pull Danielle along with him. “This way.” He approached one of the many vacant rooms, a ways down and to the left, and opened the door to pull her inside, closing the door behind him. As they were walking, the lights of the hospital flickered…but it wasn’t until they were inside that they went off completely, leaving the two of them in complete darkness.

This was so---confusing! Danielle had sent worried looks toward the healers she passed, but everyone was too busy to notice and...what was he trying to do? He hadn't spoken to her since that first night in the hospital, she had thought he'd have completely ended whatever sort of relationship with her and---Danielle had been forcing herself not to think that way, but she'd partaken in some drunken nights with old friends from school that just made matters worse. Donovan hated her, it was evident now, and---well---

He shut the door and Danielle whirled around on him. "What is it? What do you want?" She was angry because she was confused, and he was confusing and--there was no reason for him to be here, or to want to speak to her in a private enough of a manner to just whisk her off. "I'm serious, Donovan, if this is some kind of joke---"

The lights shut and so did her mouth. Danielle blinked to adjust to the darkness. Had he done that? No, the hospital lights were always on, unless a patient was asleep, so this was strange, this was wrong. Danielle jolted at a loud thudding from the floor above, and her heart began to race. "Donovan---what's going on?"

She was confused and nervous, now, which ebbed her anger slightly, but it was making her terrible uncomfortable. "What's happening?"

He had only just turned around to react to her demands for answers when he found himself blinking, trying to get his eyes to adjust to the pitch-black room they were standing in. He looked up when he too heard the thud, swallowing thickly as he imagined what could have made that noise.

Or rather, who.

Even though he couldn’t see anything as he looked up, unable to see through the plaster above them to confirm his beliefs that what he had known would be happening there at the hospital started much sooner than he expected it to. It wasn’t until he heard the tension in Danielle’s voice, something that went beyond confusion and frustration that he looked in her general direction. They were still near the door, but due to the moonlight leaking in through the window her back was towards, he could make out the faint outline of her silhouette. He stared at her for a moment before he let out a nasal sigh. When he spoke again, his voice was low, quiet…basically a whisper, but not quite.

“Death Eaters…”

He allowed that to sink in for just a moment before he took a half-step towards her. “Danni, I know you have a million questions running through your mind right now, and you should…but I can’t answer any of them right now. All I can tell you is they’re here, and because of your bloodline, they won’t hesitate to kill you on sight.” Blunt, yes, but he needed to convey the urgency of the situation so she would remain quiet, so she wouldn’t lead first string of Death Eaters who were plowing through the hospital like they owned the God damn place straight to where they were hiding.

It was strange. Her first reaction to hearing that death eaters were invading St. Mungo's was not one of fear or shock. Danielle's eyes narrowed as she felt almost insulted that they would dare attack those who were weak in their beds, and the people who were trying to keep them alive. They had no morals, no sense of fairness, if---she could understand fighting aurors, but healers who had probably more than once fixed the masked cowards up when they'd come hobbling in after an attack in their casual cloaks---

Danielle shook her head. Donovan was from a respective pureblood family, it would make sense that things were whispered and warnings were spread. When was the last time that a pureblood who wasn't a death eater or a supposed 'blood traitor' had been killed in one of these attacks? It wasn't fair, it wasn't something that should be happening and Danielle could not handle this shift in her workplace. The hospital was supposed to be safe, a sanctuary!

"I have patients," she said quickly, stepping forward, her hands going up. She had---Susan Shepard, and Jackson Marsh, they were--little, their parents had been asleep in the waiting room just a half hour ago, they were---oh, God, they were muggleborn---Danielle took in a few sharp breaths, she needed to get out of there!

"My patients need me, I have to get them out, I have to get them out before the death eaters get them!"

He knew, knew this would be how she would react, and his arm extended instinctively to catch her around the waist on her way to the door, turning in order to face her now that she had moved. They were close, now…closer than they had been in years, and he might have paid more attention to the long forgotten sensation that occurred in his stomach as he felt her body pressed to his if this situation was not so urgent.

“The only thing you can do for them right now is be the one to take care of them once everything settles down…going out there right now is going to do nothing except take away a trained healer from this staff, and after this, they’re going to be exceptionally short-handed as it is…”

Even though the only light within miles was merely celestial, his pupils had adjusted to the darkness, and he was able to make her out better than he had been able to before. He realized, after a few moments, that his hand was still around her waist…but he was afraid to let her go in case she decided to run out the door regardless of his warnings.

“Don’t go.”

Again, he swallowed, Adam’s apple bobbing with the motion as he looked down at her. Those words were so hauntingly familiar, ones he had repeated so many times before when they were younger…and once again, they held that hint of desperation, regardless of whether he wanted it to be obvious or not.

“I’ve tried to stop you from leaving once before, and was unsuccessful… There’s no way I’m letting that happen twice…not when I know it’s going to get you killed.”

Danielle was more stunned by his words just now than his announcement that death eaters had invaded the hospital. She stared up at Donovan, blinking quickly, feeling like she was in some sort of dream. He hadn't said anything that specified...anything, nothing besides the fact that some part of him did still care about her. Whether it be just as a friend or romantically or---he didn't hate her. Danielle felt her heart swell in her chest as the thought raced through her head, taking over everything.

Donovan didn't hate her. He didn't hate her, oh--that felt so good to know.

She nodded involuntarily; she was not was going to leave him now, or again. Danielle knew that his words could mean nothing but what they said. He could just not want her to die, that he did not want the guilt of knowing about an attack on his shoulders. Danielle knew that her heart should not be racing like it was, but the tone of his voice...the look in his eyes...She felt like a fool, but Danielle was allowing herself to be overwhelmed by the closeness of Donovan. It wasn't until his arm had wrapped around her that she'd truly realized how much she had missed this, and the need to be closer engulfed her every sense.

Her hand reached up to his face to touch his cheek, her breaths slow and her words deliberate,

"I thought you hated me," she whispered, her eyes jumping across his face to capture every bit of him. Her eyes welled with tears as her mouth twisted, trying to hold herself together. Maybe it was the stress of the situation, or maybe it was the enormity of the realization that the love of her life did not hate every fiber of her being. Her mind didn't know, so she just let her heart take control. Danielle lifted her other hand to take Donovan's face, just staring at him as the most truth that had ever come out of her mouth began to spill, and she choked out, "I wanted to die, thinking you hated me."

Mackenzie had been just about ready to go home when the lights unceremoniously shut off. She paused, half of her things in her arms, waiting for them to come back on any second. She waited and waited until with each passing second her stomach began to fill dread rather than with annoyance. This wasn't right. Mungo's was very tightly run maintained, with just as an efficient staff, so it was only natural when her mind went to the worst.

Those fears were affirmed when shouting began to come from outside, followed by the flash of spells lighting up the outline of the door. Mackenzie dropped the things in her arms, her hands automatically going to her mouth to stop herself from making any noise. They're here? Why? Why now? Why here? This was only for healing the already wounded, what could death eaters possibly want now?

She felt her heart begin to race as panic set over. What should she do? What could she do? Should she-- send a patronus to Sebastian? He and Caradoc had been teaching her, but she knew that would only bring him here. Mackenzie clutched her wand tightly as she closed her eyes to remember the dimensions of the room. There were no windows in this room either, no way of escaping--- the door to wing's relief room opened violently, stopping her thoughts so fast she felt reeled.

This person was not her friend, she could feel it through the air. Mackenzie bit down on her tongue to stay as quiet as possible. Stay hidden, stay hidden; that was her best bet to stay completely still. Ever so quiet footsteps... the exact opposite of her loudly pounding heart. Just leave, just leave, no one was here. Much to her split-second dread, Mackenzie felt the ever-so-lightest brush up against her side. Before she could even react, her eyes were filled with read and she collapsed unconsciously to the ground,.

Oh, of all the bloody times for the power to go out -- it would have to be when he was taking a piss, wouldn't it? Bertram gritted his teeth, annoyed that he'd have to try and shake it off without getting any on his robes in the dark, since he wouldn't be able to reach his wand without getting it ... erm, wet.

The footsteps in the dark told him also that he wasn't alone - Merlin's wrinkly balls, could this be any worse? If he bumped into another guy's chubby in the dark he was reasonably sure that didn't count as gay, but what if that started some sort of horrible mental trigger and --

Bertram nearly jumped out of his skin at the feeling of a hand on his shoulder.

"Hey," he started, "If this is your way of coming on to me, I have to say --" he was cut short by a fist connecting with his jaw, and silenced by a bright flash of light that left him with no more fight or wit left.

This was just bloody lovely. He felt his head swimming and tried to have the sense to call out for someone -- Bianca, she was a hitwizard, she could do something -- but he was vaguely aware of someone dragging him out of the loo and away.
