Character's Name: Haruno Sakura
Character's Age: 20
Character's Model: Erika Toda
Year in School: 2nd year of College
Major / Minor: Medicine School: Internal Medicine (like House but better, shh). Online major in Literature.
Clubs / Activities / Job?: jujitsu club / part-time job as a waitress.

History / Biography:

Looks: Sakura comes from a Japanese family, but due to some weird marriages in the past, and her ancestors' genes haunting her, she's the first Haruno in 5 generations to have pink hair again. She bears it with pride, although no, she won't freakin' prove it's natural. Her eyes are green, also thanks very much, great-great-great-great-parents. She's skinny and stands at medium-height, athletic. Her only pain is that her breasts refuse to grow higher than a B-cup, but oh well, can't have it all. She's more of a leg woman, anyway.

Personality: She is outspoken, brave and gives everything she has for her friends, if she has them. She loves with her whole being, and hates with her words and her fists. She's diplomatic and polite, but not afraid to be blunt and speak her mind. She's pro-dialogue, although violence does the trick too sometimes. She's strong, and at the same time her heart is fragile, but she holds it hidden well behind iron walls. She's not afraid to love, but she's afraid of not being loved back. She is against pretending to be more girly or more pretty for the sake of a guy, and thinks that her personality will do the shining for her (if it ever gets out from behind that book). She's more turned on by a thick book and a cup of tea than by some pretty, mindless boy--although a bit of yaoi will never be turned down. She's sociable, helps everyone in need of help, and hardly ever asks for help herself, certain that she's self-sufficient, and refusing to be a bother to anyone else. She doesn't think about herself much, though if she does, it's mostly to buy a new book. She hates shopping for clothes, and social classes, high-school, and arrogant people. She's always been an exemplary student, best of the best, class valedictorian, scholarship and all--but let's forget that one time she broke that guy's nose for making a pass at her innocent little friend, or the time she ended up in jail for a night for punching one pervert on the subway, shall we? Her sense of humour borders from sarcastic, to cheerful, and it should be clear from first meeting that words are actually Sakura's major strength.

Background story: As a child, there wasn't much that could be said about Sakura, except that she was shy, weird, had no friends and liked to look for frogs in puddles, and climb trees. When she found herself in kindergarden, she met two boys: Naruto and Sasuke. It was a bit odd at first, because for some reason, climbing trees better than boys did didn't earn you many points, but sooner or later they weren't rivals in tree-climbing anymore, and became very good friends, instead. Tightly-knit triangle. And then the shit hit the fan. Sasuke was take away, Naruto was put under the spotlight, and Sakura tried her very best to protect him --since he was the only friend she had left-- from the light as best as her tiny fists could. Then her parents decided, oh no, we can't have that. That boy's nothing but trouble. So for Sakura's 'own good', they moved to the city. That sort of isolation changes a person, and for Sakura, it wasn't for the good. Her young mind decided to spare her the mental trauma, and locked it all up. She remembered Naruto, and would always remember him, no matter what her parents did to put distance between them. Faced with a new start though, she was thrown into a lion's den, and shown that if you wanted to make friends in school, you had to be cool. So Sakura did what she thought was appropiate: she pretended. She pretended to be girly, and perfect, and sweet; she pretended that boys and family was all that mattered to her, and that she was the typical Japanese girl. She pretended so damn well that by the end, it stopped being pretend.

So there was Sakura, 13 years old and fully aware of what she wanted from life. She wanted to marry the pretty boy from her class, and even if they'd never get out of Shibuya, that was fine, really. She could work too, maybe as a waitress somewhere, or something to help support their family. Their lovely, lovely family. Until the pretty boy decided to move away from Shibuya, not without a last word of "you're so childish and girly". So there was Sakura, 14 years old and heart-broken for the second time, because for some reason, boys and her were always bound to be separated. Incidentally, that year her parents decided to move out again. Her mother, sick of seeing Sakura depressed, told her to take this new experience as her new chance at a new life. And oh, did she ever.

The bustling city they moved to presented Sakura with a whole new perspective. Here, she would be liked, here she would be loved, and here, she would not pretend. She'd be everything she wanted to be. If people disliked that, they could suck it up. Never one to back down from her own set goals, she did exactly that. Sakura had always been a girl thirsty for knowledge, but pushed by peers, she'd formerly put studying aside in exchange of hairpins and make-up. In the city, however, she had no peers to pressure her. One book every three days was her minimum, and soon Sakura became well-known at the Library. Her passion was literature. To keep herself strong in front of bullies that had pestered her and caused her troubles when she'd been young, she signed herself up for jujitsu. She didn't expect to love it as much as she did, but Sakura was the sort of person that when she found something she liked, she gave it her all. Slowly but surely, she became the champion of her high-school in jujitsu, attending competitions at times, and winning them. But the competitive life wasn't for her. She loved the sport for how it made her feel liberated, but books and knowledge were still her two principal passions.

When she was 17, close to the end of high-school, when the time came to chose careers came, Sakura remembered the other promise she'd made herself long back: never allow her friends to get hurt. So, she did the best thing she could think of, and signed up for med-school. To appease her thirst for other sort of knowledge, and maybe because she's a masochist for working overtime, she also picked an online major in Literature; to pay for it, she works part-time as a waitress.

So here's Sakura, 20 year-old: overachiever, workaholic. Although every Thursday evening, she's sure to be found in some tea-house, reading in a corner.

Third person writing sample: re-submitting an app for an already owned character. Do I need to make another post D:?

Other Notes: Still the same Sakura, minus the Major and Minor studies. :)
Any Questions: WHAT.

Character's Name: Tenten
Character's Age: 20
Character's Model: Mika Nakashima
Year in School: Junior
Major / Minor: History and Philosophy Major / Creative Writing Minor
Clubs / Activities / Job?: Clubs: Archery (Kyuudo), Kendo
Activities: Volleyball, Martial Arts
Job: Part-time waitress at the Far and Wide Cafe

History / Biography:

- Personality: Originating from a middle-class background, Tenten knows the meaning of hard work and dedication. These principles she puts into her schoolwork as well as every other aspect of her life. Often overlooked by the other students but always a presence, whether in the lives of all those around her or just in general, she serves as a maternal figure to the other students and puts forth an even mix of determination, confidence, and respect to all those around her with an ever mellow attitude; she provides a quiet comfort to anyone she comes across.

She is very talented in math (it's reminiscent to her 100% accuracy; math would play a big part in that I'd imagine), but struggles a bit in science. In her high school days, she served as a tutor with great influence from her mother who works as a teacher on a primary level (elementary school). She might consider doing so again sometime in college for any who seem to be struggling with the subject as Tenten finds some satisfaction in helping others. But it is her pragmatic personality that drives the young woman to study history and philosophy. Tenten is fairly good on the piano, having received lessons in her early days, but will decline in joining the school band or orchestra ("I'd rather play for fun."). Tenten is not exactly anti-social, but she has a tendency to blend into the background, which in turn actually aids in her observational skills.

But there are two sides to every story. While mostly reserved in the classroom (blending into the background), she appears to be one of the more aggressive kind of girls which keeps her stuck under the label of tomboy. More of a jeans and tee kind of girl, Tenten is always ready to get down and dirty with the guys. But that’s not to say that she doesn’t have the capacity to be feminine as well when the mood strikes her. A typical average girl in a typical modern world, her only noticeable flaw would be the lack of confidence concerning her love life. Not one to go searching for a relationship, she is at a loss when one comes looking for her. And as comfortable as she is with the boys, it’s a whole different story when faced with one she actually likes in that way.

- Biography: [Let it be known that I assume the school's in Japan or the general 'real world'] Both her parents belonged to the strict codes of the working class, her mother Mei making her living as a teacher while her father Shirou rented himself out as an artisan crafting beautiful works of mostly steel and wood. Because of this, Tenten likes to view herself as being well balanced between logic if reality and the fantasy of creativity. Her younger days are a fair example of that belief.

When she was only three years old, her mother had been transferred to a school in Japan that offered a slightly better salary for her teaching career, forcing Tenten's family to pick up and move for the sake of maintaining a better income. It was during the process of finding a place to stay that Tenten came across a lady who owned a piano. Curious, the young girl spent her time studying the keys while her parents talked with the landlord, a woman by the name of Ms. Suzume. While they decided against renting in that particular building, Ms. Suzume had seen the spark of interest Tenten held for the black and white keys. But she understood that money was tight and so proposed another option for the young girl's family to consider. Tenten would help around the building doing small errands in exchange for piano lessons and a babysitter for days when both Mei and Shirou were unable to stay home to care for Tenten until she started school.

And so, at the young age of three, Tenten began her lessons and continued them with a love and talent that held no comparison in the young girl's life. Unfortunately, it did not last.

At the age of ten, both her parents were killed in a tragic fire caused by an electrical storm. As Mei's younger brother and next of kin, Tenten was sent to live with her Uncle Katsuro in China where she eventually began working part time at his restaurant until she graduated from high school.

Since beginning college at a major university, Tenten has been living on her own in an apartment a few blocks away from campus and working as a part-time waitress at the local coffee shop to help pay for rent and tuition, occasionally receiving aid from her Uncle and Grandfather (when she lets them). Occasionally, while on campus, in between classes and clubs or practice, you will find her in the music department toying with the piano like she used to so many years ago, never having lost her love for it. The coordinating professor in charge of the department had been kind enough to extend the same agreement Tenten had with her high school music teacher, giving her permission to come in from time to time to practice on the piano as long as she was no disturbing anyone else.

History / Biography: Neji was born into a well-functioning family business in pharmaceutics far from poverty and unemployment. Despite having been shielded from the worse parts of society with a lot of fiscal stability, he would be far from calling his childhood a happy one.

Neji lost his father Hizashi when the Hyuugas made the mistake to bargain with a member of a Chinese Triad clan who was able to provide the means to let them turn new chemical entities into a medication in a far less pricey way than their former one. In turn, he demanded 25% of their profit. Begrudgingly, Hiashi, Hizashi's superior and older twin, consented to the arrangement. He had no plans of sharing the money, however, and came up with a way to leave his former liaison without a pinch of his share and no contract to refer to. He only realized his mistake when his eldest daughter was kidnapped by the furious man who demanded him in turn for her safety. Hizashi, usually one to simply follow his twin's decisions instead of assuming responsibilities, was turned in in Hiashi's stead - by choice, but his son was not told that fact until he turned fourteen. Neji was four years old.

Since, he had been at odds with his uncle and the rest of the family, also refusing to be successor to a corporation that engaged in such dirty business despite the fact that he was the most suited boy of his generation. Essentially, however, he grew up with his uncle and two cousins. He has been dealing with Hiashi's high expectations instead of loving treatment and the warmth of a family - something he would not have chosen if he could, grateful for the lack of false-faced happy family farce.

The experience turned Neji into a quite aloof, poignantly bitter child; early teenagehood only worsened those traits. Gifted with natural talents and a well-educated background, it did not take long for him to exceed all of Hiashi's expectations. Soon after entering college, he became a member of student council. Unfortunately, he had the high tendency to look down upon the less sophisticated kids and refrain from giving them the same rights as those he would consider 'deserving' of their position in this particular school.

That, apparently, was a thick thorn in the eye of one in particular, and Uzumaki Naruto confronted Neji about it.

Neji didn't get to hear things he was entirely unused to, but usually he was able to shoot down such protests with a few well-chosen, icy words. Accordingly surprised by the fact that Naruto just wouldn't back down, he allowed himself to have it turned into an argument - a mistake, maybe, as the argument turned into a full-fledged fight. As a martial arts genius, however, it shouldn't have proved to be a problem. Naruto was nobody in particular, another of those people blinded by optimism, someone Neji was genuinely surprised to even see entering college.

Which made the fact that he, Hyuuga Neji, lost to him, such an mind-boggling, infuriating fact. It was hard to accept that, somewhere along the way, his views on life and destiny had been miscalculated, but he was not foolish, nor superstitiously assuming that fate was playing tricks on him. A few surprisingly affecting sentences of Naruto beat him to proving it to himself: He was wrong, and the others had been right.

Little time later, when he turned fourteen, his uncle deemed him old enough to learn about the real background behind the death of his father. It fit just fine into the puzzle of the new world view Neji was developing. He warmed up a little to his family, but moreso to his fellow students - still a little reclusive, denial close on his heels whenever it came to admitting to actually respecting and liking anyone from the bottom of his heart; but he enjoyed sharing his quality time with others in both casual and sophisticated conversations.

With his obvious interest in human nature and mindset, his major choice for college was quite obvious from the start. Interpretation of literature, spending hours in the library only to return home with two bags full of books to continue, made the decision for his minor just as easy.

Knowledge is the first of Neji's two guilty pleasures. In his spare time, he can be found studying or researching about whichever subject might have caught his interest; due to that, he has gathered up an impressive general education. He is never disinclined from solving crosswords, puzzles and riddles; however, his main interest had always had its focus in human anatomy and accupressure, the inquisitiveness on the matter most likely to be blamed on his constant work on perfecting his personal martial arts style.

His second, far more simplistic guilty pleasure is tea. He is rare to be found without at least a cup of it next to his piles of studies; to him, who has shunned the exaggerated alcohol consumption among youths, a good cup of tea can be just as calming and satisfactory as a scotch to an old retiree.

Neji is a vain person. Although changing his hair style occasionally (which comes with the job), he usually keeps it quite long and in a low ponytail. You're never going to see him in slacks and a shirt that has not been freshly ironed; he considers trainers an insult to the eyesight. His occupation after school allows him to fully indulge in said vanity and is more of a relaxation to him than anything else; the fact that it pays well is only a welcome bonus. He does get financial support from his family and has his father's heritage to rely on, but those he refuses to spend for more than his education.

Third person writing sample:

Neji walked down the gravel walk of the park in quick strides, pulling his coat around him tighter. He would have enjoyed the shooting if not for the freezing temperature and the wonderful timing of the managers who had scheduled an outdoor collection shoot in the park for today, of all days. Despite the fact that he had already finished his extended essay on autistic savantism and hardly required to return home for school work, he had just changed his mind about paying the library a visit, and instead looked up the next scheduled bus in direction of his favorite tea house. His fingers were freezing even inside his pockets; with a small frown, he accepted that that fact was not going to change in the next hours, and no steaming cup or pot of rooibos was going to help it. He had a tendency for cold hands, though, and did not dwell on it for longer than necessary - whining was foolish and pointless, and his mood had not reached a level that would allow it.

Yet, he inherently added when he saw that he had half an hour left before he could establish a new record on how to enter a bus that was bursting with people, without having anyone invade his personal space. For a moment, he considered walking the bus route; that would save him a few cents, but essentially keep him out in the cold for longer than in the case of waiting at this stop. Warmth, or money. He did not actually depend on money; still, he had his moments of thriftiness.

Not today, though.

"Warmth," he murmured, brow furrowed, readjusting his scarf for the duration of his wait.

"... And one less dango stick."

Well, maybe just a little.

Other Notes: Photographic memory, he still has it. Now with 100% less virginity!
Any Questions: 8

History / Biography: Though the boys were not literally born joined at the hip, they were inseparable until the age of nine. Anywhere Sakon went, Ukon tried to follow. He did a terrible job most of the time, having been born with a valvular defect in his heart that made him constantly tired. He ran out of energy quickly and often passed out as a boy. Stairs were even difficult when he was very young and he was left to crawl behind Sakon. In turn, however, whenever Ukon had to take a visit to the doctors Sakon would always go and hold hands for comfort. He was afraid his big brother would just disappear on him or turn to ash with a strong blow of the wind. They loved each other and were the best of friends.

Then, as the two got older, Ukon made more and more frequent visits to the ER and had more and more appointments with his doctor. There were more complications with his heart than the defect he had been born with, but within a few years they either went away or were fixed. Surgery. It did everything! Though he would never be free to run a marathon without having major heart surgery, Ukon was given the gift of living a comfortable life. By eleven-years old he was attending day school and making friends, leaving his brother behind. Sakon started to have outbreaks of rage around that time. Those kids were taking away his beloved brother! When he pitched a fit on the playground, their parents thought it was only a phase.

The twins continued through public school together until the eighth grade when Ukon contracted the flu. He could hardly move and began to fall behind in school. Even after he was cured of the disease he was left feeling broken. The family hired a tutor to take care of his education as he refused to leave the house in such a state. Sakon complained, tried to get him to go back to class with him, but the elder brother wasn’t budging. Hatred on his face, Sakon continued through normal school until he graduated two years ahead of his twin. Ukon said he didn’t care, he insisted it was great that Sakon was getting ahead in life, but neither really believed it. One was jealous, the other still sore from being forced into the real world. Why should it be that Ukon got to live a life of fantasy, mother waiting on him hand and foot while father worked his ass off to supplement the costs? And yet, why was Ukon the one that had to be sick in the first place? Couldn’t it have been someone else?

It would never be someone else. It would always be Ukon. And Sakon would always be the sibling cared about last. When he got sick “Aniki” was the only one that really noticed and he, sometimes even being ill himself, took care of his brother. They would always be a pair no matter the friends they made or the amount of times they were dragged to jail. On the occasion they committed acts of shoplifting, Sakon often was ticketed for speeding, and Ukon had once been taken in for drug use—he was left off easy because of his “condition.” Sakon had to be bailed out. Growing up was fun, they had good laughs, and now it was time to be an adult.

Character's Name: Inuzuka Kiba
Character's Age: 20
Character's Model: Jiro Wang
Year in School: Junior
Major / Minor: Veterinary Medicine
Clubs / Activities / Job?: On the soccer team/volunteers time to walk the dogs at a local shelter/works in his family's clinic

History / Biography:
Inuzuka Kiba has had a fairly normal life - normal for someone with an excessive amount of energy who is prone to getting into or causing mischief if not productively occupied. Kiba grew up as a fairly typical, energetic and carefree child. His family has lived in the same place as long as he can remember-a two story unit attached to the back of the veterinary clinic that his mother runs. The only major change in his life came at age seven when his parents divorced, his father going so far as to take a job that moved him out of Japan.

Inuzuka Tsume was more than capable of taking care of her family and the clinic on her own though. They don't live extravagantly, but they get by with a bit of creative planning and both Kiba and Hana pulling shifts and doing chores around the clinic. Kiba's only real time away from home were the years that he attended Konoha no Gakuen on a soccer scholarship, putting him in the dorms. With his outgoing and energetic personality it wasn't hard for him to fit in and make friends there, some of which have managed to carry over into his college years.

And despite the fact that school has never been one of his strong suits, he manages to keep his grades just high enough to keep his soccer scholarships, not wanting to put the financial burden of his schooling on his family, even if he is working towards following in their footsteps by studying to become a vet. This is not to say that he isn't notorious for sleeping in class, forgetting his assignments until the last possible minute, and doing frantic cram sessions the night before a big test. Plans or no, he's still Kiba, and things like his dog, playing soccer and goofing off with friends still tend to take priority in his life.

Third person writing sample:
Soccer practice was one of the best parts of Kiba's day. The energy that had been building up throughout the day as he sat through lecture after lab after lecture was finally put to use in a manner that didn't get him in trouble with any professors. His mom and older sister weren't there to tell him to clean out the kennels and, best of all, Akamaru was actually allowed to hang out. In fact, the large dog had become something of a team mascot over the past couple of years, barking out encouragement from the sidelines. And once practice was over, they'd steal a little bit of time to roll around the field like a little boy with his puppy.

The only downside was on days like today. They'd been wrestling around in the grass like usual, not minding how the sky got a bit darker, a bit cloudier until it was too late. The sky had ripped open above them and they were both soaked and covered in mud by the time they reached the locker rooms. So not only was he stuck with cleaning the both of them off, there was a nice trail of muddy sneaker and paw prints all the way in.

Kiba heaved a weary sigh as he dragged a mop bucket from the supply closet. Tsume was going to be on his case for being late now and they'd surely be soaked again before they even got home. But Coach would kill him if he didn't clean up this mess. He'd just wrung out the mop, ready to make his first pass when Akamaru emerged from the long bank of shower stalls, tongue lolling happily out of his mouth, pausing only to shake off the excess water all over the bank of lockers that had been dry only seconds ago.

The whimper that echoed through the locker room then did not come from the large beast.

Other Notes:
*Plays guitar, fairly well, but only for fun
*Wears glasses, usually opts for contacts though unless he's tired or trying to impress a smart girl
*Avid soccer player and fan
*still lives at home...much cheaper and it's attached to the vet clinic...not to mention they obviously allow large dogs

Any Questions: why do you keep making me do these? /whimper

... FORGOT THE MODEL SECTION, LOL GOD. Sorry.

Character's Name: Sabaku Gaara
Character's Age: 20
Character's Model: ( Shou of Alice 9 )
Year in School: Junior
Major / Minor: Double Major: Philosophy / Geological Sciences
Clubs / Activities / Job?: Activities: Martial Arts, Riflery, Sailing
Job: Bouncer

Background History: Born the third child to the renowned General Sabaku, Gaara's birth killed his mother and she died with curses on her lips, including the name of her newborn son. As luck would have it, Gaara’s life only went downhill from there.

A difficult baby, it was a mystery that he rarely slept though never ill. As his father could hardly be expected to spend legitimate time raising his children, Gaara was left in the care of his maternal uncle, Yashamaru. In his father's absence, the household was with militaristic precision. Awake at 5AM, in bed by 9PM, with constant drills, stringent lessons, all unsympathetic to the needs of a child: the siblings were not allowed much frivolous. Whether his role in their mother's death was related or not, Temari and Kankurou turned to and relied on one another, or on themselves (each child having a propensity toward his or her solitutde), leaving Gaara to his own devices. As a result, Gaara’s life felt as if it revolved around Yashamaru. Yashamaru was an unsuccessful doctor, burdened by the shame of his failure, by the pain of his twin's death, and by the responsibility of caring for the boy he blamed for it.

When Gaara was six there came another mystery. There had been nothing to alert the rest of the family, but when Gaara left his room for dinner he was bloody and silent, his forehead wounded to scar. They found Yashamaru dead. The truth would never be pried from his lips, or otherwise discovered: his uncle had tried to kill him.

Over the next few years, his personality became increasingly unstable; in part because of his severe insomnia, in part due to his having lost his mind that night, thrown into an existential crisis that half-broke him (at six, no less!). There was something off about the kid, to be sure. Because his psychosis in part instilled in him paranoia (sometimes he thinks people want to kill him), he tossed himself into all available classes on martial arts, self-defense, offense, weaponry. At the worst of times, he hears voices: mostly a female one he calls mother. At ten an incident lead to his expulsion from school. If not for the timely intervention of the teachers, Gaara would have killed another student, and in cold-blood – he wasn’t hysteric, wasn’t anything but calculating.

His family deposited him into a mental hospital for the following six months. Once deemed rehabilitated he was released, but General Sabaku had run out of patience with his troubled son. Gaara found himself shunted to a military school until age fifteen, whereupon years of consecutive reports of his excellent performance prompted his return. He finished secondary school, and moved on to college.
During this time his father made it clear that he did not consider the boy to be anything but an obligation, anything but abnormal, anything but insane. Gaara's disdain for his family and the place in which he lived caused him to skirt curfew, to spend as little time as possible within those walls, near people who may well have been lumps of meat. At first content to wander, at seventeen Gaara resolved to dismiss any reliance on his father by securing a job for the night hours. When the short, slight teenager had presented himself at an interview for the position of bouncer for Luxuria, the management near laughed him out the door. Ten seconds later, and the outgoing bouncer was writing on the floor, his arm snapped in three places and his nose gushing blood. Fifty seconds later Gaara had the job.

It kept him out of the house. It kept him out of trouble; earlier years had brought on the temptation of the darker side of city life, but Gaara had found that much of it involved too much posturing, ego, and reliance on drugged up morons. Once in college, he moved into the dorms, and within the month found his double become a single. He didn't need to wonder why.

Character's Name: Nara Shikamaru
Character's Age: 20
Character's Model: ( Nikishido Ryo ) for some reason google image search makes him look a lot gayer than he already is. 8(
Year in School: 4th year, advanced standing
Major / Minor: Medical Sciences, Pharmacology
Clubs / Activities / Job?: shougi club, go club, archery / lazyass TA of the biology+chemistry department

Background History: Details like Chouji and Ino omitted for flexibility re: future applicants!

Born to the family of a small, but long-running pharmaceutical company, Nara Shikamaru was born with an extraordinary mind, but always aimed for the ordinary. Growing up, he never made it his goal to be acknowledged by others. Rather, he made it a point to blend into the background, never wanting to be noticed for anything extraordinary. He could do with being overlooked by others. By the time he became a junior high student, it was a wonder why Shikamaru even bothered coming to school. Year by year, his mother would nag at his lack of achievements—to which Shikamaru would yawn and flatly reply: "I'm content with what I have."

That was, and always would be the truth and the lie behind the matter. Shikamaru was someone easily contented with the mediocrities of life, but at the same time, it was because there was nothing else to do or expect. He could pass the days without the unnecessary hassle of studying, but by watching clouds, hanging out with friends, and even napping unnecessarily out of schedule—but what else beyond that? He didn't see the point. He was bored. And just like how he dealt with everything else around him, he accepted his boredom without much of a fight.

Years passed, and Shikamaru barely scraped the school system with passing marks, somehow making it into yet another run-of-the-mill public high school. It was his first year there he met a teacher who saw not just Shikamaru's lazy exterior, but his bored as hell mentality. He was being observed by the teacher and in turn, Shikamaru observed the teacher right back through closed eyes, lazy exchanges of dialogue, and failed examinations.

He passed the necessary tests with mediocre marks, but what stood out was the fact that in all of his examinations, only a third of his papers had been filled out. He hadn't even bothered with the easy questions that didn't require thinking. But of all the questions he had answered in all of his examinations, he had scored perfect marks.

It was at the end of his freshman year in high school that the teacher confronted him.

"You're a genius."

Genius he was, but what was the point? Shikamaru scoffed at the accusation. But before he could counter with anything, the teacher had seen Shikamaru for who he really was. From then on, the warm summer days became a hassle, but he learned simple (to his standards) games like Shougi and Go. He learned to enjoy his teacher's presence, learned to appreciate his talents, learned to put his mind to some use. By his second year of high school, he still didn't get the best of all grades, but the improvement in his attendance showed.

Halfway through his junior year in high school, his teacher died in a car crash.

Unsure of what to do, Shikamaru went missing from home and school for about a week. Whatever happened during this time is only known to Shikamaru, but what the people saw upon his return was a glint of motivation in his eyes—something that he was lacking all his life. From that point on, his exam scores were consistently at the top of the class, and while his overall class average was nowhere near the top, it became apparent just who the smartest in the class was.

It was almost unfair to others just how fast Nara Shikamaru kept rising to the spotlight.

Personality/Likes & Dislikes: In all his proclaimed laziness, Shikamaru does get a lot of things done. He's efficient in the way he does everything, and for him, everything takes a shorter amount of time—especially when it comes down to studying. That's not to say that he's impatient—rather, he's the exact opposite of that. Always acting like he has all the time in the world, Shikamaru is accommodating to others regardless of his bitching and complaining. If someone asks him to do something, he will, because if there's anything that defines Shikamaru, it's his steadfastness as well as his reliability. It's too bad no one really expects this of him, due to his notorious reputation of being a lazyass good for nothing. No one ever bothers to look beyond his reputation, and he couldn't care less.

And because of his reputation as well as his current status in the school, Shikamaru can be distant from others. It's not that he's socially inept, but the fact that he can be an ass and not care. He's dry, sarcastic, and most of all, blunt to others, and if others decide to not look beyond his sharp words, so be it. In terms of his relationships with the people around him, it's questionable. Shikamaru is not the type of person to hate someone outright, but also not the type of person to fall head over heels over someone. To him, people are just there. But if someone gets lucky enough, maybe they'll be able to notice the subtle differences in the way that he treats others.

Character's Name: Yamanaka Ino
Character's Age: 20
Character's Model: Aya Kamiki
Year in School: 3rd Year / Junior
Major / Minor: Dramatic Arts / Psychology
Clubs / Activities / Job?: Associated Students Council (Vice President of University Affairs), Drama Club, whatever acting/modeling jobs she can get.

Background History:

The only daughter of a pair of successful florists, Ino never wanted for much in life. Her parents ran the Yamanaka Flower Company, a chain of flower shops that, while not obscenely lucrative, was lucrative enough that money was never an issue with the Yamanakas, especially not Ino. Ever since she was a baby, she was doted on and spoiled by her parents, her father in particular; they showered her with toys and presents and most importantly, love. She, in turn, kept them wrapped around her little finger.

Ino grew up into a precocious, feisty girl, winning over the adults with her charming personality and winning over the kids with her easy confidence. But why would she ever doubt herself? She was pretty sure--with her parents to corroborate it--that she was the most amazing little girl in the whole world. She was Daddy’s Little Princess through and through.

When she was in elementary school, she met--and subsequently lost--her best friend to, of all things, a boy. Ino prided herself on her judgment. She also prided herself on being an excellent florist, having helped out in the local shop since she could walk; she saw something in this girl in spite of the way the others teased her. Even the most ordinary flower could be beautiful if you presented it right, or so she’d been taught.

So she reached out, introduced herself, and gained a friend. Thanks to the umbrella-like protection of Ino’s popularity, the other girls stopped their teasing. At least until they both started nursing a crush on the same boy, and the friendship ended.

Ino took it hard; she hated losing a good friend over something so stupid. She hated being wrong.

It was the only blight on her otherwise fairy tale childhood, though she didn’t let it slow her down, even throughout middle and high school. Unlike a lot of her peers, the gawky teenage years seemed to pass Ino by; sometime over one summer, she metamorphosed into a beautiful young woman, with her natural blonde hair and big blue eyes (Yamanaka legend attributes it to an American GI during World War II), and that was that. Puberty cowed before Yamanaka Ino.

In high school, like your stereotypical queen bee, she joined the student council as vice president, worked her way through the baseball team, the soccer team, and the karate club, and commanded the students like a general commands his troops. Popularity and peer management came easy to her, thanks to her self-confidence, good looks, and minor sense of entitlement.

But in spite of being the most popular girl in school, Ino was also an excellent student, earning some of the highest grades in her class and eventually, a spot at one of the top universities in Tokyo. Unfortunately for her parents--though her father came around eventually--her interests never really leaned towards academics or taking over the family business, though she does and always will love flowers.

Ino wanted to go into show business. She wanted to be famous, because no other spotlight was big enough for her. But most importantly, she wanted to be an actress, to express herself on her own terms.

Being adored by millions of fans would just be an added bonus.

So she took that scholarship to the big Tokyo university. But instead of majoring in Business or Psychology or something sensible, she decided to bide her time with a Dramatic Arts major, as least until she made it big. And she would make it big. Eventually.

Personality/Likes & Dislikes:

Ino is a girl that’s all about appearances. There’s a large gap between how she acts and how she feels, which can translate into superficiality in most cases and self-preservation in other. She won’t hesitate to judge a book by its cover, and to judge it quickly and harshly. She’ll rarely beat around the bush--unless it’s a situation that requires some delicacy (see: flirting), which makes it a special circumstance--preferring to be straightforward, sometimes shockingly blunt in her choice of words.

She definitely doesn’t mind being shocking, though. An attention whore at heart, Ino will gladly take the spotlight in any situation she can. She’s used to getting it, after all, and she can be mightily put out if she doesn’t, because she’s also a drama whore at heart. The acting thing didn’t come out of nowhere; her first reaction is usually an overreaction, loud and animated and if you’re feeling kind, passionate.

However, this also makes her kind of a bitch. Thanks to her father spoiling her silly, she doesn’t take too kindly to people trying to deny her things, and will usually make her displeasure known in a loud, shrill way. It doesn’t take much to set off her temper; one misplaced comment and she’ll start the shrieking.

That also goes if you tell her to butt out. Her confidence can come with an overconfidence, which can come with unrelenting bossiness and butting-in. For your own good, of course. Obviously, she’s the foremost authority on Everything, so you better listen or perish.

Unless, of course, you’re a very hot guy. She has a penchant for them; you could say that they’re her weakness, specifically the tall, dark, and handsome type, which is where her superficiality comes in--she usually fails to look any deeper than that, and gets bored of them pretty quickly. Her flirting style, much like the rest of her, is slightly over the top and very thinly veiled. She’s not shy in the least, confident in her beauty and her ability to seduce. If you’re looking for a cutesy little girl, you’re looking in the wrong place.

None of this is to say that she’s a total bitch. In spite of surface level impressions, she does, ultimately, have a sympathetic heart, even if she doesn’t always show it in the right ways. The true friends she has are always fiercely guarded. She can’t turn down anyone in need. Underneath it all, she wants to act in order to connect to people, and below even that, she can’t admit it to anybody.

Her insecurities are much like other girls, though she combats her fear of being fat and unwanted with obsessive dieting, her fear of being alone with a wide circle of friends. Ino is definitely not a passive participant in her life, taking charge and sticking to her guns. She’s stubborn and headstrong and you can’t ever fault her for being a girl that knows what she wants.

First person writing sample:

Has anybody ever noticed how auditions always make you feel like cattle? I’m serious. Well, okay, maybe none of you have noticed, because none of you have really gone to any auditions lately, but just go with me on this one.

They stick you in this little room with a horde of other people and yeah, you’re all trying out for the same role. Then when it’s your turn, they stick you into another little room, usually with a few people sitting behind a table or desk or whatever, looking disapproving from the get-go, you know, before you’ve ever opened your mouth.

Then the lady--I swear, it’s always a lady--is like, read these lines to the best of your ability blah blah. Which, let me tell you, isn’t an easy thing to do, in spite of what you all think. Shikamaru. I mean, you have to deliver this big speech about your dead mother or your dead baby or whatever and you’re supposed to be really sad about it, but all the people you’re talking to just look bored.

What. Gives.

I mean, they could at least try to be involved. Or you know, try not to stare at my breasts. I know a D-cup is rare in Japan and all, but seriously. You’re balding. And old.

Background History:

(heykwurweyigkr just… putting it out there… that anything that concerns yet unapplied for characters is more than up to their applicants’ change & consideration, this is just an outline that I don’t plan to impose on anyone, should I get approved orz)

Second son to the rather wealthy main Uchiha branch, Sasuke had an all in all loving family, and not all that much to complain about. One of his few FMLs was the hereditary reduced melanin in his retina; he doesn’t quite verge on ocular albinism, but certainly gives the impression of occasionally red eyes even now, under various lightings. Aestheticism aside, it also strongly impaired his sight. He’s been undergoing treatment since childhood, and he wears corrective black contact lenses even now; he’s sadly been warned that continued eye strain might lead him to blindness.

But back to ickle Sasuke (the nerd). His brilliant brother’s successes frequently eclipsed his achievements, and certainly stole enough of his father’s attention, but Sasuke was never truly neglected: he had his doting mother, and the elder Itachi’s constant affections. He also had LEGO blocks. Lots of them. And trains (red ones). He liked the trains best.

He met Naruto and Sakura during his first school years, and as luck would have it, actually befriended the idiots (The BFF 4EVER, let’s cut our palms and shake like blood brothers because that’s totally cool and completely hygienic, what are you talking about, kind of friends).

They say bad luck comes in threes, which is possibly why this charming acquaintance was followed by the downfall of his close family. To this day, Sasuke can’t really say what happened. He remembers Naruto and he going to the Uchiha estate for dinner, possibly pondering new and mysterious ways to gtfo without eating their vegetables. He also remembers finding every one of his relatives in a bloodied mess. Somehow, Itachi was spared.

Sasuke wanted the natural (to find his brother), and the obvious (to get out NOW), which is why he followed the Craven’s Guide to Massacres and ran. Naruto followed. Eventually, so did the police. The boys were separated, and Sasuke ended up in temporary state custody and in his very own 8 x 8 mental ward. (There were no trains ._. ) He was informed that he couldn’t be handed over to his brother, because bluntly, Itachi was a primary suspect. Incidentally, he also couldn’t be found.

Two things contributed to Sasuke’s eternal woe: his brother’s disappearance act (10/10, would see in a magic act again), and Naruto and Sakura’s apparent silence. Unknown to him, the psychological treatment recommended to him required his isolation from the people and things closely related to that day; he hadn’t broken as hard as he could have, that day, and his exceedingly many doctors weren’t taking any chances. If there was any hope that the child was young enough to somehow forget or come to peace with the event, they’d take it.

Consequently, Sasuke went : ( .

He took Sakura’s, and specifically Naruto’s absence as both rejection and affront, because brothers don’t give up on their own when the going gets rough. Ultimately, he decided they were both simply too cowardly to help him figure out what in God’s name had happened that day, and that if they didn’t want to be involved, Sasuke could certainly understand – no. No, he really couldn’t. What Sasuke could do was make sure they paid for it, and given time, Sasuke would.

The legal situation surrounding the inheritance line was strenuous enough that repeated custody trials between the distant members of his family left him in the care of various lawyers for the better part of his minority. He tried to play teenage detective, but obviously failed. Given the business empire at stake, the case was wrapped up in media love, and Sasuke himself was the subject of some attention; in particular, he caught the eye of Orochimaru, a dubious individual with what Sasuke thought was financial gain in mind. Orochimaru made him realize the obvious: the odds of Sasuke’s earning his vengeance for his family’s death through legal means were particularly slim. Better try the shadier city networks, kid.

Character's Name: Houzuki Suigetsu
Character's Age: 20
Character's Model: Yamashita Tomohisa [Hair will be shopped of course~]
Year in School: Sophomore
Major / Minor: Marine Biology
Clubs / Activities / Job?: Swim team, Water Polo referee, underground cage fighter (shhh, that’s hush hush),

Background History:

Suigetsu, the youngest child of the Houzuki family, was born and raised in a harbor town, where everything revolves around the water. He grew up surrounded by boats, by red-faced fishermen shouting to one another in their uncultured drawl, by the hustle and bustle of a busy port. In fact, Suigetsu comes from a long line of fishermen—and if there was ever any doubt of this, his father would point to the extensive family tree that took up half of the dining room wall and begin rattling off names by rote. (He would go through the entire tree if you let him, and…hardly anyone did.)

Needless to say, the Houzukis were proud of their humble origins.

Suigetsu and his older brother, Mangetsu, had relatively carefree childhoods. They spent many long afternoons in the water, swimming, catching fish with their bare hands (one of many methods their father taught them), playing games that they invented and inevitably drew a crowd of other harbor kids (rough and tumble games where more often than not, most of the kids went home with cuts and bruises and occasionally broken bones—but never Suigetsu or Mangetsu). They would be at the port when their father and his partners brought in a new haul and help unload. The brothers figured they would go on to become fishermen themselves down the line.

Years passed with this routine. Suigetsu joined the swim team in high school with the intention of getting into college on a scholarship—his father was adamant about the importance of education, despite the fact that he never received a formal one. Everything was hunky dory, until Mangetsu was killed in a deep-sea fishing accident when Suigetsu was 16. And something in Suigetsu changed after that. He’d always had violent tendencies (remember those games?), but they really came to the surface after Mangetsu’s death. So he got involved in cage fighting. And who introduced him to this shady activity? An equally shady guy named Orochimaru who was more than happy to give Suigetsu an in despite his age. There was a catch, though, a catch Suigetsu didn’t find out about until he’d already gotten himself ensnared—Suigetsu answered to Orochimaru, was subject to his whims (which often involved a lot of poking and prodding and nameless drugs). He met Sasuke once or twice prior to the Incident that freed him from Orochimaru for good. Suigetsu miraculously finished out high school, got that scholarship, and entered college as a Marine Biology major.

He wouldn’t be a fisherman, but the water would never quite leave him.

…and neither would his penchant for cage fighting. But again, SHHHH that’s on the DL.

Personality/Likes & Dislikes:

Suigetsu is the kind of guy who will tell you he doesn’t like you if he doesn’t like you (if you fall into this category, be prepared for cheap shots at every opportunity because he is what you would call a baiter), and will do the things he wants to do, even if they are in direct opposition to what others may want. Kind of a ‘what you don’t know won’t hurt you,’ mentality. Or, consequently, ‘eh, they’ll get over it, they’ll forgive me.’ His nature has a lot of darker elements to it that he manages to suppress as he goes about daily life. Class, swim team, refereeing…but he can’t completely shut out his desire to fight. It’s a part of who he is, and when he can’t hold back anymore, he turns to cage fighting, which he excels at.

The loss of his brother is a sore spot—it hit him harder than he cares to admit, but he isn’t averse to talking about Mangetsu (one of his favorite subjects to discuss when he’s drunk, as a matter of fact, along with daytime talk shows, sharks, and indie porn). And, as I mentioned in the personality section, Mangetsu’s death is the reason Suigetsu got into cage fighting in the first place.

He’s an ambitious person, though he put his ambition on hold when his brother died—their plans for the future involved each other, after all. Over time, he was able to shift his ambition from one goal to another (there aren’t any marine biologists in the Houzuki family; he’s gonna be the first, come hell or high water). Want to really piss him off? Go on and mock that ambition.

Because his focus is often limited to the things that interest him, he can come off as indifferent from time to time. That is, until you give him a reason to pay attention to you. And if you manage to earn his respect, grudging or otherwise, he’ll more than likely step up to the plate for you when push comes to shove (but that doesn’t mean he’ll stop taking shots at you).

He has no qualms about walking around naked. He has no qualms about accepting bribes (and has done so on more than one occasion—here’s looking at you, water polo, you’ve got a classy referee). He has no qualms about lazing and taking frequent breaks.

He is a competitive swimmer.

He is pleasant sometimes, smiley sometimes, coarse and sarcastic sometimes—or all at once, even, if you’re lucky.

Aaaaaand he filed his teeth into points by himself, of his own accord. :D

Writing Sample:

First Person

Once upon a time, Mary had a little lamb. His name was Uchiha Sasuke. His hair and his heart and his very soul were black as coal, and his couch was a lumpy piece of shit. Are you reading this, Sasuke? A lumpy piece of shit. I don’t know how you expect me to get anything done when I’m sleeping on a couch with the consistency of cottage cheese. This has to be bad for the body. If I lose my scholarship because my back is all fucked up, I’m billing you.

On that note, swim meet this weekend, ladies and gentlemen. Yours truly is competing in the 200-meter relay and the 100-meter breaststroke. If your inclination is more toward water polo in regards to spectator sporting, come to the game tomorrow afternoon. 4:00 sharp. Nobody blows a whistle quite like I do.

Sasuke—the subject always rolls back around to you, doesn’t it—what the hell happened to the bottles of water in the fridge? I put seven of them in there. Seven. And how many are left? One. I know you don’t drink that much water, you poor, pasty creature. You better not have thrown them out. Bottled water isn’t cheap.

Man, thirsty enough to drink ten of ‘em in a single sitting.

But I’m always thirsty, and water hits the spot just right. I really never understood how anybody could think water tastes gross—I’ve met people who feel this way, and it makes absolutely no sense to me. Water tastes like water, and it’s good. Clean.

I like water, Sasuke. In bottles. In the fridge. Where I put them.

…pretty sure I have an assignment for organic chemistry due Friday, and I haven’t even started it yet. Because I am distracted by the lumpy couch and the lack of bottled water in the fridge.

Black, black heart, Sasuke.

I need Jell-O. Stat.

Character's Name: Hyuuga Hinata
Character's Age: 19
Character's Model: Nagasawa Masami
Year in School: Freshman
Major / Minor: Nursing
Clubs / Activities / Job?: works part time at a local day care center in the baby room

History / Biography:

Hinata was the eldest of two daughters born to Hyuuga Hiashi and his wife. Being the child of such a successful businessman gave her a life of comfort and ease, with little to want for. Except her parents. Her father was always working, even at home it seemed. And her mother's heath was not the greatest. While pregnant with Hinata she had been diagnosed with ovarian epithelial carcinoma. The treatments and surgeries she would later undergo always seemed promising, but in the end they would never truly cure her, and she would die shortly after the birth of their second child.

Even with her fathers absence and mothers illness, it seemed to have little effect on little Hina. She had been a happy and bubbling child in the early years, always running after her cousin or clinging to her mother's leg when she was around. Even her nanny couldn't get over what a sweet little child she was. Her world had been warm and safe then, filled with smiling faces and kind people until one day a few short months after her third birthday all of that changed.

The nanny had taken her out for the day, down to the local park to play in the sun and chase the ducks by the pond. A goose had snuck over and stolen something from her... and that's when the man had shown up and everything seemed to blur into a horrible nightmare. Even now, as a young girl on the verge of womanhood Hinata is still plagued with the memories of her nanny screaming, of the horrible man and his companions that held her till the violent standoff that ended in her uncles murder. Her family tried to help her cope afterwards but the damage was done. Their sweet little girl was gone, replaced with a quiet, timid little shadow who shied away from almost everyone, especially her father whom she'd thought she'd watched die.

When her mother finally died it seemed to make things worse, as she was the only one Hinata trusted. Her cousin Neji, whom she'd adored when younger, seemed cold and distant to her. Hiashi, not knowing how to deal with the loss of his wife and his daughters problems buried himself in his pharmaceutical business. As the years passed even her own sister Hanabi, who was 5 years younger then her, came to find that her distrust of the world made her no fun anymore and began to look elsewhere for entertainment. In school the other children barely noticed her and never bothered to invite her into their games. In high school she followed her fathers example and buried herself in her work to spare herself from the rumor mills. It seemed she had achieved total anonymity and with it, safety from anyone ever hurting her again. But soon she realized that it wasn't really what she wanted. She watched silently from her corner how the other girls would laugh and make plans with each other. They had friends to share news with, cry on, to ask for help. And Hinata had... no one really. Late one night, bothered by these thoughts and the aching loneliness that was growing, she snuck into her sisters room waking her up with only the words "I... don't want to hide anymore. I... I want people to... to notice me."

Now, after a year of social lessons from her sister, Hinata is trying to start over and build her life as a new person in college. It's her hope that she can find a few friends, learn to trust people again, and maybe get back the happiness that had been taken from her so long ago.

Third person writing sample:

Today was not going well at all.

First her alarm clock didn't go off, leaving her to wonder if she'd forgotten to set it or if her roommate had shut it off and left her to sleep. Either way Hinata was left with 20 min to get ready and get off to anatomy class. Apparently she wasn't the only one running late, as most of the bathroom was occupied, eating up a good 10 min of her time. Then she couldn't find the one bio-chem text book that she needed for the class that started almost immediately after her first ended. Looking in the drawer they had stashed most of the snackey foods she found her roomate had also taken the last of the cereal bars and left the empty box behind. Now she was going to have to go hungry till 1pm when she would finally be able to break for lunch.

Groaning, she grabbed her bag and ran out the door still in her flannel pajama pants and bunny slippers. Going as fast as she could she managed to make it across campus, down the hallways and into... a completely empty class room. Breathless and confused she looked around the hallway, spotting someone leisurely making his way down the hall.

"Excuse me..." she gasped, waving for his attention. "What happened to the class that's supposed to be here?"

He looked at her for a moment like she was crazy, taking in her clothing and the frazzled look on her flushed face. "There's no class there today," he said, trying hard not to laugh at the poor girl. "It's Saturday."

Now it was Hinata's turn to stare, the color in her cheeks burning darker as she flushed now from embarrassment instead of exertion. "S-Saturday?" she stuttered, trying to determine if he was serious or just playing with her. She only wanted to die more as he responded by showing her the date on his cell phone. "T-thank you..." she muttered, turning in a daze to head back to her room, to humiliated to do anything but crawl back in bed and hope to god nothing else went wrong for her today.

Other Notes: Hinata is terribly shy and hopless when it comes to interactions. I know this might make it difficult at first for people to interact with her, but she will warm up after a bit. She's most comfortable around animals, kids, and people who aren't loud *lol*

2009-09-05 09:10 am UTC (link)
Background History:

Karin grew up in a upper-middle class family consisting of herself, her Father, and a poodle that should have died years ago. She was naturally intelligent, enough so that she didn't need to study much, but did it anyway because she liked to. Reading was a passion of hers, and early on she found she needed glasses. Up until a certain point, years later, they were chunky and unattractive but eventually she dished out the money for the more fashionable models of glasses.

That point came in some time during middle school, when she gained a better sense of how much money she had relative to those around her. An attitude finally kicked in that changed her into a popular, rich snob. Her friendships were shallow and she hid her passions for reading, dyed her hair some pretty weird colours, and let her grades drop (into B and C territory; she wasn't going to flunk herself) because she was more interested in keeping her posse around and entertained, despite not much liking any of the girls within it.

Promiscuity was the next step in keeping herself atop the friend food chain; Karin often stole boys from under the noses of girls who so adored her, so long as the guy was hot and she thought he'd make a nice trophy boyfriend. Some time around midterms, sophomore year, she wound up losing her big-bad-V to a (damn fine) senior that asked her to model for a painting he was doing. After finding that to be a pretty nice ordeal, Karin was game to bang who she wanted, when she wanted.

Anyone that called her "loose", however, was subject to being beat to a bloodied pulp whenever she found their sorry asses; Karin never had the best of tempers.

She went to a community college where she did little more than hang with her posse, party and drink, and when her grades went down Daddy dearest started to take away spending privileges of hers. This didn't sit well, of course (and Karin never admitted that her nerdy side had caught up and realised what a spiral down her life had taken) and she told him something along the lines of: "Screw you. I'm done here. I'm going to go live with Mom in China or whatever."

Karin's mother had moved to Europe years before, but she wound up attending school in Japan anyway. She'd printed out a list of schools that were relevant to her interests and played something similar to MASH with them all until it narrowed down to that one university.

Two months before the start of her junior year, she went for training in California to become a Mac genius (for the sake of money and self-reliance, since Karin was refusing cash from her Father out of stubbornness), and went onward to Japan.

Character's Name: Uchiha Itachi
Character's Age: 25
Character's Model: ( Kazuya Kamenashi ) (With some hair photoshoping in the near future)
Year in School:N/A Teacher
Major / Minor: N/A-His focus, howerver, is in teaching music and some literature.
Clubs / Activities / Job?: Job: Intro to Literature and Music Theory teacher. He also offers tutoring to his students and private lessons for the more aspiring individuals.

Background History:
Uchiha Itachi is the eldest son and heir of the main Uchiha branch. Or, was once.

His childhood had been, as far as Itachi could remember, pleasant. It had been consumed with the fire of knowledge that Itachi's father had lit underneath him and kept kindled with praise, expectation, and familial responsibility. It hadn't left the young man with much time for playing or friends-though he kept a few in his early years. What he did have was the constant, steady weight that his father pressed onto his shoulders, the unwaivering love of his mother, and the admiration of his younger brother.

It would be his brother, specifically, that haunted Itachi for many years. He had doted on his brother, loved him greatly and unconditionally-as siblings often do. Sure, there had been tussles-they were brothers-but Itachi had never felt anything less than adoration and, at times, envy for the young Sasuke who, it seemed to Itachi, had time for friends, for playing, for being a child.

As Itachi got older, his repsonsibilities got heavier and he shouldered into them with unquestioning obediance. Because it was his duty-or, atleast he felt so.

And then, as quiet and unobtrusive as the first falling leaf in autumn, came the massacre. Itachi had been home at the time and his eyes and mind had locked the incident into his psyche so vividly that, even many years later, he could recall the reflection in his mother's eyes in that last, fatal moment.

The people involved had taken him-Itachi never knew why they had, what their motivation had been, but, after a while, he didn't care. He could remember, through a blur of what he assumed to be sleeping pills, catching a snippet of the news on the television while in a hotel room about his parent's bodies being discovered.

After that, however, his contact with the outside world was cut off. He was shuttled away with these people via boat and moved into a large house in the country. Television, telephones, anything that might have allowed him to get away was taken from him. He saw little of other people during his years in that house but he was given books to keep him busy so he read. Often. And reread. His thirst for knowledge was never stiffled though he did not attend school. He taught himself a second language (which many of the books came to him in) and continued his studies in his own way-reading what he could, testing the boundaries of his confines when it was safe, teaching himself piano in the basement of the home to soothe his mind when books could not.

He was told quite early on that his brother had also been killed and he had believed that after seeing his parents murdered. He never questioned it. What reason did he have to?

Part II
[info]hushedlaw
2009-09-08 02:47 am UTC (link)
Shortly after he turned 17, he was able to slip away in the night and into countryside he had lived in for years but had hardly seen. By then, the Uchiha massacre was a far away and long gone issue-no one where he was knew who or what that was.

It would make sense to him as to why in the coming days when he learned that he was in Italy-of course no one would know what he was going on about. Feeling the point was moot anyway, since his family was long gone, Itachi settled in a city and, with odd jobs backing him, put himself through college as quickly as he could manage. He CLEP'd out of what he could took what he couldn't. Literature was his predominant focus but he found that his skills at the piano were not terrible and fell quite easily into music as well.

He stuck to himself during college-not having the social skills to blend or the taste or trust for friendship that he might once have had. That isn't to say that he didn't sometimes mingle-he is and was a young man at the time, and young men tend to do what young men are want to do-but, for the most part, he stayed to himself.

At 24, after several years of hard work and over burdening course loads, Itachi graduated and found that he'd learned as much as he cared to from institutions. Italy held little more for him and he began to send out resumes for teaching positions.

He took the first job that accepted him and headed off toward places he had not seen in many, many, many years.

Personality/Likes & Dislikes:
With having had his nose stuck in a book in his early years and his person literally secluded from the outside world, it's easy to say that Uchiha Itachi is a man defined by the word 'aloof.' It isn't that he doesn't know how to deal with people-he simply has no interest or need for them. This may make him come off as a bit of a jerk but there's not even an ounce of snobbery in him-He's just curt with people to get them to leave him alone.

Itachi is a very bright, patient, and tolerant man-which lends heavily to his teaching-but does tend to get a bit snippish if forced to listen to a lot of chatter. For most of his life, his world has been very quiet. And he likes to keep it that way.

Music is, perhaps, the only rule breaker when applied to all things Itachi. He will endure, quite happily, the company of any one playing music and, if he finds a particular style pleasing enough, will even seek out that person for company if he can listen some more. He is a lover of most any kind of music and any sort of intstrument (from the complicated human voice to the simplistic, ritualized beating of drums).

Literature, his second love, follows a close second to the melody of music. It was one of the few things he was allowed in his seclusion and he finds comfort in oh so many dog eared, yellowed pages.

That being said, when those rule breakers come into play, Itachi is a very passionate man.

He does have a sense of humor, but it is usually very dry and often only amusing to himself.

But that is all outward, all visible to the people around him. One can easily understand what being spoken to curtly means or see the reverie in another person when they are hearing something lovely. But it is the things below the surface of Uchiha Itachi that really make him who he is.

Brilliant or not, Itachi is haunted. Nightmares of his parent's and brother's death find him often-reliving one, imagining the other-and leave him to wake, alone and drenched in cold sweat, in the night. He has long since accepted their deaths and, on the surface, has appeared to have moved on. He has long since escaped captors-whom Itachi never turned in because, once his blood family was gone, they became, in a gruesome way, his replacement family-and does not speak of them.

He would rather his past lay quietly in its grave, hidden in the garden he buried it in.

But he's never gotten away from any of it completely and uses his classes, his work, his publications to keep his mind constantly busy and off of the pain and his constant (and, on his part, misunderstood) loneliness.

Character's Name: Zetsu
Character's Age: 29
Character's Model: Andy Lau
Year in School: Pff. College dean.
Major / Minor: Military Arts & Science major/ Life Science minor
Clubs / Activities / Job?: College dean (administrative), part-time protection interest work

Background History: Everyone is fairly certain that at some point, Zetsu had a family. He probably had a mother and a father; chances are he even had an younger brother. The most anyone can get out of him about that part of his life is that his family is no longer a factor in his life.

Zetsu does security. From a very young age he was raised to protect certain things by destroying other things. It’s not clear whether this began before or after his family ceased to have importance to him. He spent the majority of his younger years in rural Japan, training at a prestigious (but for all intents and purposes, nameless per a need-to-know basis) security academy. Spending so much time destroying things brought on an appreciation of simple living things. Plants hold a particular fascination for him; in his spare time Zetsu studied up on biology and botany. When he was allowed to keep them in his quarters, he spent time raising Venus flytraps, taking particular interest in the theory that talking to plants helped them grow.

That was when Zetsu began talking not only to his plants but also to himself.

Before graduating from the security academy, he was diagnosed with manic behavioral disorder and mild schizophrenia. There were no signs that this diagnosis had any actual implications on his ability to serve—Zetsu was considered among the top of his class—but rested heavily on his life from that point onward. It was difficult to get work with that flag in his file, most people unwilling to trust their lives in the hands of a vaguely mentally unstable individual, no matter how capable he might be otherwise. Frustrated with his life, Zetsu began pulling his tendrils out of society, accepting work for the seedy underbelly of society while becoming more and more of a recluse.

That was when he met the man who changed his life.

Through connections better not discussed in polite company, Zetsu was able to offer his services to a member of the Tokyo ‘elite,’ who accepted them without qualm. Initially he remained transient, taking care of little leftover bits of business that still needed to be cleaned up. Before too long, however, he was imported to Tokyo into the city proper and placed in an administrative position at an influential centre of academia, where he could be both more closely monitored and more proactively useful. Zetsu bounces around now as he is needed—recruiting talent when he sees it, breaking knees when he’s asked to, and generally keeping the fear of god in his employer’s employees.

Personality/Likes & Dislikes: It’s not really a question of “Who is Zetsu?” It’s more of a question of “Which Zetsu will you talk to this time?”

There are at least two sides to the coin of who Zetsu is. On the one hand, he’s a diligent worker, someone who can be counted on when things need to be brought back under control from careening too near the edge. On the other hand, he eats people. No, really; there are actually rumours that he’s cannibalized a man before.

Zetsu has a very serious side. When being given orders or completing a task, he becomes very driven and focused, comparatively single-minded in the completion of his objective. In this ‘go mode,’ he is usually calmly deferential to his superiors and has no trouble taking those below him to task. Things tend to get done when he wants them to get done. It is his public face, the one most people meet when they first encounter him. Once he relaxes from that mode, however, he tends to flit back and forth between something serious and something much more childish. During particularly difficult weeks, he can sometimes be found muttering to himself in a vaguely schizophrenic fashion. It’s a part of him seen primarily by those he considers his superiors, as well as by a few very unfortunate persons before their imminent disappearance from the face of the Earth. Then again, he’s been loosening up lately. He’s found it vaguely beneficial to keep those below him on the food chain guessing.

No matter which part of his persona is “active” at the moment, Zetsu has his own sense of humour. Little things amuse him, although it’s sometimes hard to tell what the rationale for his amusement is, in part because what he finds amusing changes from one second to the next. The only universal is the amusement he gets from being able to cause people small amounts of harm… or large amounts, although that tends to be more business than pleasure.

The final word concerning Zetsu really ought to be ‘respect.’ His superiors respect him enough to give him freedom and his underlings respect him enough to know to fear him. There’s something about a half-faced smile that simply commands esteem. Or maybe it’s the fact that knowing him for more than a few seconds gives you the distinct impression he’s eyeing you for a side-dish.

First person writing sample: [It’s a little short; another could be forced but he’s really not much of a communicator in this sort of medium.]

The plants have noticed, even if the people haven’t. They’ve begun to brood, because they know. The winter is going to be particularly difficult this year.

This is always the way of things. The land understands. It feels, notices, reflects. It isn’t as obvious in the city like this. Concrete and steel and other unnatural things choke the land off from its understanding of itself. People live here like a blight, thoughtlessly. Not that it will matter in the end; everything can be pruned back into a state of nature. It simply means spending more nights out and about like a good gardener.

Difficult winters are so different in the city. There’s very little to prepare. We might get a lamp at the office meant to encourage growth during the decreased season of light. It seems like a foolishly vain attempt to combat natural selection. If, however, it keeps productivity up, I don’t suppose we can really object to it. It’s certainly nothing to encourage. Much of life here is like that—permissible at best. It’s likely that’s why he wanted to have me here. There’s a lot of work to be done. More than any single person could manage, most likely.

Such an honour to be that person who gets to trim the hedges.

Character's Age: 20
Character's Model: Seung Ri
Year in School: 2nd year
Major / Minor: Biology major, zoology minor (specializing in entomology)
Clubs / Activities / Job?: Iaido club; research assistant, library intern

Background History: Some children are raised in bright cheery nurseries with lots of colours and shapes to stimulate their minds. And some children are raised in brightly lit university laboratories with lots of biology students and tiny insects to captivate their attention. The Aburame family raised their children in the latter environment.

Shino comes from a scholarly, fairly well-to-do and intensely quiet family with a long history of weak eyes. An only child, he was raised in a world of academic adults without much interaction among peers of his own age. After a brief stint of being dragged around the country by his parents, Shino was finally settled into something of a ‘normal’ life at the age of 12. The socialization process was difficult and unhappy for him, the sort of thing that never actually stuck with him, particularly when his parents began drifting apart and eventually parted ways.

School was painful, a long awkward experience he was ready to get away from as soon as possible—that is, from secondary school, as he was fairly certain university would be some sort of hyper-intellectual sanctuary. It was difficult, of course, to think about leaving the safe haven which was his home nest, so Shino very wisely split the difference and threw himself into academics, a familiar field which had allowed him to escape his slightly disjointed childhood.

Then, of course, he was actually at university. There was a lot more talking, a lot less time when he was actively allowed to hide, a lot fewer people who were willing to let him live his own life in his own quiet corner of the world. As an added bonus, it became increasingly isolating to live on his own when he parents decided to separate while remaining married. After an initial period of resistance, Shino began working his way into the system. He learned to talk about things other than his major, joined a club that helped him keep his mind in a state of calm and let himself smile from time to time. If he couldn’t be a recluse, he would learn to live with the swarm.

Personality/Likes & Dislikes: Shino is a fairly social creature. He likes to smile, talks easily, and revels in the time he’s allowed to spend with his friends because it just feels so damn good to be open and sharing and having opinions.

That is, for an Aburame.

Compared to the ‘normal’ world of not-his-family, Shino comes off as fairly reticent. He tends to keep his thoughts and opinions to himself when there isn’t glaring error to correct or a direct question addressed toward him. He’s the sort of person who’s constantly analyzing a situation, keeping everything in his head until it’s fully formed before letting it out into the real world. That said, his verbal tact has often been noted to be… slightly lacking. All that quiet thinking brings him to the right answers, not necessarily the nice ones.

When first getting to know him as a student and worker, people are often impressed by Shino’s level head and innovative solutions to problems. When first getting to know him in a social setting, people often find Shino unapproachable and a little unduly harsh (because of his lack of a brain-to-mouth politeness filter). People who actually know him well enough to penetrate the bubble of solitude, however, tend to consider him a ‘nice’ boy, the sort you’d bring home to mother if he weren’t so goddamn weird around people he didn’t know well.

Then again, lots of things about Shino are weird… or at least, a little off-beat. He’s always had a preternatural affinity for creepy-crawly things; it makes him great to have around when you need to get rid of a spider, of course, but does nothing for the state of his dorm… or his social life. Shino established fairly early on in his life that it was more interesting to sit around with a book on entomology or studying a jar full of ants than to go out and attempt to make friends. The madness may have changed—it’s a broader range of books to study these days—but the method remains the same: if given the choice, Shino will opt out of interaction in favour of sitting by himself somewhere dark and quiet. It’s not that the right people couldn’t pull him out of his shell; it’s just that he rather enjoys the solitary confinement.

First person writing sample: [once again, not a talkative character; longer could happen if necessary, but it’d be a little out of character]

We started on Elasmostethus interstinctus today. According to my father, they were my first Acanthosomatidae. It was reassuring to work with them, although certainly not the most enlightening project we conducted thus far. Most of them were rather lovely.

The literature course is still… going questionably. The constant reminders that there are, in fact, no right answers have become rather frustrating. There are still wrong answers. Plenty of them have been offered up during class sessions. It remains counterproductive to discuss incorrect answers at length only to have them written off as incorrect answers. Only a few classes left in the humanities after this one, at least.

Weekend plans have once again been disrupted. Father isn’t going to be in Tokyo until the week after next. On the bright side, this means I’ll actually have time to finish dissecting the Heike monogatari without having to attend the study session. I’m fairly certain that course work is still a reasonable excuse for not letting my floor-mates drag me out until whatever ungodly hour it is they trickle home. Perhaps I can perfect the art of instant noodles while I’m reading.

2009-09-13 08:05 pm UTC (link)
Background History:

It isn't fair to say that Temari wasn't a happy child. She had a nice home, a mother who took care of her, and a father with a comfortable career. She had everything a child needed to be raised happily. On the other hand, she also had to deal with the minor dysfunctions of her family.

There was her father, who never missed an opportunity to tell her how disappointing she was. How he always wanted a group of sons to carry on his legacy, and how right off the bat he was met with her and her failings. How she never did anything right, and that she would never meet the standards of the family. And her mother, who was often not in her right mind and let Temari believe that everything her father said was right by never saying anything at all. Then her brothers, who... Well her brothers were just what they were. A violent goth and a hapless giant. None of them were very close. It could have been the atmosphere of their parents (or their father, in the case of Gaara) keeping them emotionally distant, or it could have been the unique personal flaws of each of the siblings. Either way, Temari was very much left to take care of herself.

However she did not take her anger out on her brothers. No, they had their own issues and she wouldn't slap on hers to go along with them. At a young age, she took it out on her classmates or teachers. The playground bully who insults everyone constantly, always gets into trouble and has no friends? That was Temari. In the time after her mother died, she was a violent, angry, wretched little girl. Her file in the Washington Elementary School's principal's office was three inches thick. Eventually after instance after instance of being sent home or suspended only to earn more degrading slights from her father she knew it had to stop. She had to be better than this. She could be better than this. She could be a great, successful, intelligent person if for nothing else than to prove that bastard wrong. To start off with, she would need some friends.

Every child at school could pretty much be counted out. Temari had a reputation as the rather mean and insufferable sort. Thusly, the only logical alternative was to go to someone within her family. She chose her larger, less mentally unstable brother. Kankuro was reluctant to bond with her, being, of course, skeptical of her motives, but over time they did connect on some level and she learned that it wasn't as hard to make friends as she had made it up in her head to be. So once she hit middle school, she was finally armed with the tools she needed. The next year, in her introduction to middle school, she didn't instantly make enemies with her teachers, fellow students, or faculty, so her plan was a brilliant success. Without the impediment of being distracted by rivalries with everyone around her, she could focus her energies on making good grades and creating opportunities for herself through extracurricular activities. She excelled in all her classes, made comfortable relationships with tolerable people, and let out all her anger at her father out through sports and mild academic competition with her classmates.

She would get into a good school, get a well paying job, have a successful career, and make her father eat his taunts through a bendy straw.

Character's Age: 25
Character's Model: ( Miyavi )
Year in School: N/A - Teacher
Major / Minor: Creative Writing Major / Psychology Minor
Clubs / Activities / Job?: Job: Intro to Creative Writing and Fiction Workshop I teacher.

Background History:
Haku was born into a family of moderate means, living in a relatively small town. His parents were happily married, and his father had a steady job that provided them with enough to live in relative comfort. He led an innocent, happy childhood during which nothing particularly notable or interesting happened. That is, until he was eleven. His parent’s deaths were eventually ruled a murder/suicide – the father has clearly killed the mother, shot her right between the eyes. The gunshot wound in his own head was under suspicion, though; the angle was wrong, and the way the skull had broken around the exit would made it difficult to determine if it was, in fact, an exit wound. The investigator in charge of the case pled heavily in Haku’s favor, however, remembering how they found the boy, curled up under the deck, practically frozen by the snow.

Of course, not everyone believed he was innocent. His only close relative, his father’s sister, believed fully that her brother had been murdered, and refused to take the boy in. A lack of other relatives landed him in a juvenile care facility, where the other boys were, for the majority, bigger and stronger than him. His delicate, almost feminine features did him no favours there.

High school for Haku seemed like an endless, thankless task, with days and nights of studying only punctuated by fights with other boys to prove he wasn’t just a girl. College was thankfully different, providing an atmosphere in which he was not asked to prove himself except academically. Throwing himself into his studies, he achieved the highest he could, and although he was not the top of his class, he did do very well. After graduating, Haku had no clear path. Although he loved writing, he didn’t have the drive to make a career as a writer or a journalist. Luckily, however, a chance meeting with Zetsu scored him what he decided has to have been the most interesting interview ever. After looking at his piercings, his tattoos, his rather colourful clothing selection, and his hair (he had not had the chance to dye it back to a presentable colour beforehand) and gave him the most alarming grin he’d yet to see. Haku was not expecting a position as teacher, but he got one, and he wholeheartedly believes it was given to him because he looked so different. Whatever the reason, he’s thankful for the opportunity.

Personality/Likes & Dislikes:
If there is any one word that can fully described a person, then the word that describes Haku is nice. He is unfailingly sweet and polite to everyone who speaks with him – baring those who tease him for his androgynous looks, of course. His personality may seem at odds with the sheer number of little quirks in his appearance – the tattoos and piercings most of all – but those who get to know him better see that they fit him as well. Something that he originally adopted to help him look at least a little more masculine ended up complimenting his happy nature in an interesting way.

However, accuse him of being a girl and risk upsetting him. Although Haku doesn’t hold grudges, and gives most people the benefit of the doubt for assuming, he suffered through too many taunts as a child and a teenager to take such things lightly. He is self-conscious about his appearance, even though he sometimes makes his more feminine characteristics all the more noticeable, it is often without realizing he’s doing it.

Of course, no one can be happy with every aspect of themselves. Since his parent’s death, Haku has felt himself to be unnecessary. With no family connections and no positive influence inside or outside of school, he has spent the larger part of his life without a real goal in mind, because he believes he is not needed by anyone. He holds on to the hope that someday he will find someone who will see him as important, but he isn’t looking for that person. He now just takes what life hands him and goes with it.

Perhaps because of this, Haku has been extremely protective of the few friends he’s had. On their pointing out to him that he basically lets them treat him like a doormat, he has simply shrugged and smiled. If it will cause people to want him around, Haku will be willing to do it. If he finds you to be worth the effort and respect, he will be extremely faithful to you.

First person writing sample:
I’m not sure you can say that interview went well.

…I mean, yes, I got the job. But that doesn’t really constitute as going well, does it? When the dean sits there and stares at you for a full-on twenty minutes with a blank look on his face? Because I didn’t know I was having a job interview today, so my hair’s still pink and blue and my clothes aren’t exactly professional, you know. Add to that, I can’t take my lip-ring out for at least another month or it’ll close.

And I wasn’t expecting him to smile like that. He seems like a very nice man, but that look was very close to terrifying.

Oh well. I’ve got the job. Now… now I just have to teach whatever group of students they hand me how to write.

Of course. That will be easy.

Anyone can write, after all. It’s just a matter of having an imagination, and everyone’s got an imagination, just some people haven’t developed it. Fiction isn’t that hard, you just write anything you’ve ever dreamed or fantasized about and there you have it, right on the page. No right answer and no wrong answer, just yourself.

I suppose that’s why I like it. It’s something that’s just me, no one else in the mix. I suppose that’s why I haven’t got the drive to write a novel. How would I end it? If it’s me, how could I end it? It would have to be open, to let the ending come on its own. And I bet editors don’t like that. I bet in their world endings are short and sweet and wrap up all the loose ends, or else the end isn’t really the end because it’s a steep cliff that the reader nearly falls off, and then they have to wait a year or two to find the bridge.

I guess that’s like life, too. But you’d have to keep writing forever, and you’d never finish the story. Someone else would have to write your end.

Deidara [2]
[info]might_badtouch
2009-09-22 02:38 am UTC (link)
Background History:
Deidara remembers first seeing the beauty of True Art when he was four. His father worked on the destruction of buildings ("It's less expensive to knock a hotel down and rebuild it than to fix it while it's standing," he'd explained) and brought Deidara to watch one day. His mother had died during childbirth so until he started school he had to be with his father most of the time. "It's a shame she's dead," he'd said when he was finally old enough to understand, "I want a little brother so he can be just like me, yeah."

When Deidara was eight, news was delivered to him by his landlady that there had been a terrible accident, and his father had gotten stuck inside one of the buildings when it went down. "Really?" he'd asked. "It must have been awesome, yeah. If theres any way to go--" It was then he'd found out that not everyone shared his opinion on True Art. Obviously, everyone had to be stupid. When Deidara looks back on his father, he admits he was a pretty cool, artistic guy.

He was allowed to continue living with there. The landlady kept an eye on him, cooked, and did her best to mother him despite Deidara assuring her that he could take care of himself. He had little interest in school, starting to skip classes and entire days at a young age. The teachers, at first, were sympathetic for his 'situation' and passed him with low grades. Once he'd gotten older, and the teachers less understanding, he conned friends into doing the work. Deidara paid them back with errands, and by getting the landlady to make them lunch (he could take care of himself, but she was a fine cook). Since he was hardly there, his teachers never found out that Deidara was barely literate. (This, however, never seemed to hinder his ability to understand chemicals. Perhaps it was because of an obsession, or a specialised genius that came only to a person as mental as he is.)

One interest he'd kept through the years was his love for True Art. Often, he'd go out into areas of town where the cops didn't dare to head, to go mess with chemicals and set off fireworks. He'd once had to go to the hospital because he'd hurt his eye when he'd guessed the size of an explosion wrongly and didn't get out of the range where debris would be flying in time. Being only fourteen, the cops didn't suspect him for being the one who had set the explosives up, and he got away with them thinking he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Now, he has a busted eye, but it isn't completely blind. It was because of that he started wearing his hair in front of his eye; it was less irritating to see nothing with that eye than to see poorly.

He gained skills in things he never should have needed, like hot-wiring cars and tricking security cameras by getting them to glitch as he snuck by. With these skills he terrorised the rich neighbourhood not too far off from the landlady's apartments, but never seemed to turn his trickery on the landlady's home. It wasn't necessarily a respect for the woman so much as it was him thinking it wouldn't be any fun to pick on an old lady.

Why he decided to go to college, nobody but Deidara really knows. Maybe it was to appease the old woman, who still writes him letters that he never responds to, or maybe it was just to get the fuck out of there and discover new territory. It might have something to do with a ring he received in an envelope one day (slipped under his door, though the landlady sure as hell didn't put it there), that he's worn on his right pointer finger like it has some sort of significance to him that no one else knows.

He doesn't take his classes seriously, and scoffs at all the art students like he has something to teach them, and as far as Deidara is concerned: he does.

Lee [2]
[info]artgasming
2009-09-28 11:25 pm UTC (link)
Background History:
(T-taking liberties with Gai considering we don't have one yet. Ssh.)

Lee lost his parents to a car accident before he was old enough to really remember them. He was old enough to recognise the loss, and unlike some orphans around his age Lee never held anything against his adoptive family: an elderly couple who may have made better grandparents than going through the full stages of raising a child. They were loved and respected by him all the same.

Through his younger years and into middle school, Lee underwent a lot of teasing, though whether it was for his peculiar attitude, his eyebrows, or just because he couldn't bring himself to be mean enough to fight back, it was unclear. He made few friends (such.. as.. Tenten, possibly. I need to.. ask. Um.), which he cherished dearly, but it never was enough to push the bullies away. (It was strange, considering he kept himself physically fit enough --mostly due to his excess of energy leading him to sports-- to take them on, but they chanced fighting him, knowing he'd never strike back.)

One incident was worse than any other, in middle school when the punks were truly rearing their ugly heads: someone with a cruel heart had found he'd been taking care of a stray cat nearby the school, and Lee was unable to save the animal before the worst of the damage was done. It was the first time he hit back (and the only time he ever needed to, as no one messed with him once they heard the damage one punch had done), and afterwards Lee felt so awful that he couldn't do anything to help that he took it out on himself. This resulted in multiple cuts on his hands, a trip to the hospital, and scars which are still visible to this day.

It was somewhere between point A and B that Lee met someone who changed him forever. Though Lee had always led an innocent and energetic life to this point, this man, Maito Gai, had stepped in and brought out the best in him. Lee had a new sort of optimism and drive do be his very best, and very rarely let others put him down. Despite him becoming a New and Improved version of himself, Lee's quirky, strange appearance made little change -- except for, perhaps, his outfits becoming bolder and more offensive to ones retina.

Lee had moved to attend a new high school, in Tokyo (as his father had passed of old age, and his mother would have an easier time there in finding assistance in terms of her elderly needs) and easily made friends in this new place. A few people still thought him weird, but the city had certainly seen stranger. Being a more liked guy, however, somehow did nothing to help girls find more interest in him. Lee's dating scene was nothing impressive; he was a perfect gentleman that always got turned down because being kind and totally honest somehow was too much for the fast lived girls of today.

However, there was one girl he met, that Lee had first seen during his final year in high school. She never turned him down, and yet she never really accepted his courtship either. This endless beauty was the wonderful miss Sakura, and Lee was completely and totally head over heels in love with her, from first glance. They went on a few dates (or Lee thought so, but Sakura seemed to view it more as "friends hanging out") and soon enough it was time for him to graduate. Graduation certificate in hand, Lee confessed to her and promised he'd be back one day, because he couldn't afford the colleges of Tokyo even if they had more to offer.

He moved away to attend a cheap community college, working two jobs atop of his schoolings, and putting it all away. Lee mailed his mother (snailmail, and never email, as neither of them were terribly computer savvy) and made a trip into the city every holiday to visit, even if it meant taking a day off of work and spending a little of his earned cash. He built up enough to afford two years at university (which was all the schooling he'd need), and transferred back into Tokyo. Lee, after all, couldn't break his promise of returning.

Haku, part II
[info]silentlucidity
2009-10-25 05:32 am UTC (link)
Background History:
The very early years of Haku's life are typical-small, happy family in a little suburb living on the wages of a blue collar man. His mother was a home-maker and, in his youth, the light of his small world. From a very young age, he showed a great deal of promise-as he had clever hands and a mind that was eager and willing to soak up any and all knowledge available-and the prospect of Haku making more of himself than his parents presented itself. However, the sunny, eager child was not blessed with a stable home-his father had started his family young and on earnings much too meager to stay ahead of bills, so when things got tough, his father turned to wayward activities and trains of thought. The family that the man had once doted on began to hold hidden and frightening demons and, in the midst of a cold and bitter winter, he finally teetered off of the edge of the sharp and steep cliff of mental breakdown.

When his father came to slaughter his mother, Haku slid out of a window and onto the high ledge where he stayed, for hours on end in the cold, bitter air, until, atlast, the authorities found him.

For the next several months, Haku was passed back and forth in The System, shuttling between home and home and foster parent and foster parent. Though he was a pleasant and well behaved child, a permanent home seemed to be missing from his particular deck of cards. It wasn't until Zabuza, a man who had not seemingly been looking for a family, met with the fickle Lady Luck and happened apon Haku quite by accident.

The adoption issue had been over quickly and Haku began his new life with the only person in the world that seemed to want him, to have a place for him, and who needed him. Zabuza gave Haku's young life a purpose that it had never before had and, in doing so, gave the child who so believed he was alone and unwanted a reason and a goal to live for.

His schooling had not been typical for a great many reasons but, all in all, in came down to the simple fact that Haku's world revolved around Zabuza. Haku ate any and all knowledge eagerly but focused on the things that seemed to please his gaurdian. Haku learned to clean, to cook, to take care of the man as if, indeed, he was his wife. This skewed view on the world lent to Haku's bent androgyny-he threw himself into a role unmeant for him at an age wherein the difference between a man and a woman were unimportant.

Even Haku's personal interests reflected that of his greater purpose. He took dance-ballet mostly-because it appealed to his need to please people. A crowd who enjoyed his movements on stage or the cast he practiced with for months to create something lovely and moving was allowing him to be needed. And as he grew and Zabuza's need for him lessened, Haku threw himself more and more into his art.

When he turned 18, Fickle Lady Luck agained knocked on his door and, due to reasons Haku still doesn't care to speak of, he left the man who had taken him in and loved him so. With many skills to speak of but none that made Haku happy, he enrolled in college to further his dancing and took to the theatre like a duck to water. More so than dance, bringing a story to life with a cast of others allowed Haku to feel he was serving some greater purpose and bearing wieght for others.
