Being the center of attention was not at all easy on Rowan. She wasn't used to it, except whenever she tripped or fell or in some other way embarrassed herself to be there. This time was a completely positive experience and she wasn't quite sure how to handle it. Thankfully Rowan was a good dancer and could just move with Keegan to the music without much thought.
His words made her smile and blush. "T-thank you. And congratulations to you as well. You certainly deserve it. I still think I should ask for a re-count..." she said with that look of bewilderment still on her face.
A light laugh escaped him as he smiled down at her, nodding his head a little bit in thanks. He couldn't really have cared whether or not he had gotten the title. "No, no re-counts. You won this fair and square, Rowan." And not to mention shocked at least half the school.
Keegan didn't bother paying any sort of attention to anyone that was standing around watching them move on the dance floor. As far as he was concerned it was him and her. Both because it was their moment, and because he didn't want to make the already blushing Queen more aware that they were being watched.
"I suppose I did. But I still don't think I deserved it. I mean, I'm not exactly the most popular girl in school, and isn't that what this is usually about? Popularity contest and all that?"
She was still smiling as she spoke, looking up at him as they swayed to the music. She really felt like it was just the two of them, which was a good thing since if she thought about all the eyes on them she would probably trip over nothing and make a fool of herself. It's the popular, gorgeous girls that get this usually. So why am I here?
He simply continued to move with her along to the music. It was hard not to take another step closer to her. "Yea, that's pretty much what it is. You've gotten to be known by more people through me, and hell, maybe people's mentality changed a little bit this year?"
Keegan couldn't really say why exactly she had won. Not that it was a bad thing, but it was a surprise to him almost as much as it was a surprise to her. Part of it could have been because she was his girlfriend, and those that voted for him just voted for her too. He was pretty sure at least a few of her friends voted for her as well.
Their dancing seemed almost formal, seeing as there was actually space between them. It felt good but it didn't quite feel right to her. Ah well, there would be more dancing opportunities later for the two of them.
"I guess I have, yeah. I hope this isn't a "Carrie" moment though, you know? Not that I've made any enemies here. I don't think. But still..." She was mostly joking. Mostly.
There was plenty of time left in the evening for other dances, and more in the vein they preferred when not everyone was watching them. Keegan couldn't help but to look forward to those.
"This definitely isn't a 'Carrie' moment. I also think it's impossible for you to make enough of an enemy out of a person for them to do that." Besides, if anyone so much as tried to ruin Rowan's night he would unleash hell on them.
She always looked forward to dancing with him. Ever since she had come to a dance with him the year previous, she realized that she loved to dance with him. Faculty watching or not. She did move ever so slightly closer to him, her thumb moving over his jacket in its usual way when they were close.
"Hmm, you might be right about that. I don't usually make enemies easily. Mostly because, well, I don't really do anything that people notice enough to object to. And I don't really talk to the kind of people who get that kind of angry that easily. Or people in general." She gave a kind of a wry smile to him. It was true that she wasn't entirely a social creature and wasn't in the habit of talking to most people, current friends excluded naturally.
Faculty or not, he certainly didn't argue when Rowan moved a little bit closer. "You're starting to talk to people more. And you were voted this position fair and square, however you managed to do it."
It sounded as if the song was coming to a close, and their time on the floor alone was ending. In a way, he was relieved. Though any hope of melting into the crowd was shot; they both practically had beacons on their heads. "So enjoy it, Homecoming Queen."
