Pippi's answer, at least, is simple. "I don't have to. But you're my friend... if you need anything, you can always ask."

Pippi's mother is not a font of wisdom. She's not even a slow trickle of occasional intelligence. Its not hard to see the daughter in the mother. The one thing she is, however, is self-aware. She uses her talents to her advantage, and she has always had good people around her - her head "handler" is a gay man that Patricia accepted without question twenty two years ago, because they were friends, and because he was good at what she wasn't.

The one lesson she's always taught Pippi, that has stuck with her like few other things aside from fashion advice: "Be good to the people who are good to you."

She gives her friend the time at the graveyard, not intruding. But when Mitzi is done, Pippi is right there. And Patricia's handler may have just made sure that there was ice cream, movies, and a quiet couch for a couple girls to curl up as long as needed.

"Of all my friends, you, Irey and Lily are the ones I deserve the /least/." Mitzi says, wiping her eyes and offering her friend a smile. Pippi was the only one of the Raiderettes who'd never made Mitzi feel bad about being poor. The other girls weren't /overt/ about it, but sometimes they said things that drove home just how different they were.

Pippi never did that. In fact, most of Mitzi's 'hang out money' and few months of rent when Mom really botched the job, she was convinced came from Pippi, who listened more often than she spoke...except when a cute animal was involved.

"Okay, enough sadness. Let's do something fun before I have to get back to studying." she smiles, walking away from her mother's grave with her friend.

Yes, her luck is rotten...

but sometimes, it balances out.

"We have ice cream and movies! Any movie you want!" She offers back with typical Pippi-ness. Informed that its time to stop being sad now, Pippi goes from sad to bouncy in 0.03 seconds.

"Oh yeah... uhm, speaking of studying, there's something I needed to ask you."

"Okay, sure. What's up, Pip?" Mitzi asks, wondering exactly how Pippi managed flip the switch so quickly. Mitzi would be grateful for that particular bit of knowledge.

The world through Pippi-vision can be an interesting, and often very cheerful place sometimes.

"So, uhm, one of the things mom's people wanted to talk to me about was the family trust. And I was really confused for a while, because, you know, of course I trust my family. I only really have one family... err, how would you say that? One person who is family?"
There's a little more rambling. Eventually it somehow devolves into talking about koalas.

Thankfully, when she runs out of steam, she finds the original topic again. "So, anyway, it turns out that trust means more than one thing. It means at least two things... and apparently one of them is money. But anyhow, part of the trust-money-thing involves college. There's a big fund that Twin Cities Soap and Beauty put up for a scholarship fund. Oh yeah, since that's a big word... uhm, scholarship apparently means money for college! I don't know why they didn't give mom more money... but its some tax thing, and cause they thought I might want to go to college sometime."

Deep breath. "So, see, I know college has some good things. But I don't date, and I've heard frat boys are even worse than high school boys. And I'd have to go to classes and things... so I'm not going. But New York has a /really/ awesome beauty school. They might be able to help me get a job at Playboy or Vogue or something doing hair stuff... but it doesn't cost near as much as the trust thing... for scholarshippy things... I said what a scholarship is, right?"

Deep breath. "So the question is... do you want to go to college?"

Mitzi has learned to make allowances for Pippi-vision over the time they've known each other, expecting the conversation to turn to cute animals several times while her friend speaks. The fact that they only get side-tracked /once/ tells Mitzi that this is something she considers important.

Mitzi continues to listen as Pippi describes the trust fund and scholarship money that she's got set aside and Mitzi can't help but be a little envious. Mitzi had thought about college, but figured it just couldn't happen, since she didn't have the money, even if she had the SAT scores. Sure, she had a little bit of money /now/, after finding that lottery ticket, but that wouldn't last forever. Not with life and things happening.

So when Pippi says she's not going to college, Mitzi is about to protest and tell her friend not to throw this opportunity away. She's ready to give Pippi about twenty or thirty reasons not to walk away from this, but she holds her tongue for just a minute more, though her expression says she really wants Pippi to reconsider.

Which makes her look a little bit silly when Pippi asks her if she wants to go to college.

"Pippi, I'd /love/ to go to college, but I'll be working for the rest of my natural life to pay it off. Oh, that is, in between going to school, working and being a Titan. The only college I got accepted to was in New York, and the only reason I can stay in New York is because I can live at Titans' Tower for free and teleport." Mitzi says.

It's clear that she didn't exactly follow her friend's line of thought.

Pippi blinks. Then she blinks a little more. She spends a few moments trying to do some mental math.

Finally, she answers, "Ok, that doesn't even make sense. Do you want the Peppers-Twin-City trust money to pay for college, or not? Cause if you want to go to college, its all yours. I don't need it."

That stops Mitzi cold.

Pippi was offering her the chance of a lifetime, to go to college. No one in Mitzi's family had gone to college. Annie always lamented that fact over several alcohol-soaked evenings at the dinner table. Now she had the chance to do that.

"Really, Pippi? I mean...yes! I really want to, more than anything." Mitzi says.

"Oh, ok! Cause you totally weren't making sense for a second there. Yeah, mom's handlers said someone had to use it. They wanted to know if I was going to school... when I said I wanted to go to beauty school, they asked if I knew anyone who wanted to go, or they'd offer it in a contest or something. I told them I'd ask you. Uhm... so I'll tell them, and we can get it all worked up. They're really good at these things. I bet Dinah and Irey would help with your homework too!"

"Pippi, you are quite possibly the most awesome person I know." Mitzi says quietly.

"You know I'm going to need my hair done once you finish beauty school, right?" Mitzi asks with a grin.

"Well... if I pass beauty school. They have written tests and things." she offers, uncertainly. "But you know I'll do your hair any time. I'm also going to get you some new clothes for school... and you need a new swimsuit. Summer is coming!"

"Hey, English was the one subject I didn't fall on my face in. I'll help with the written stuff if you need it." Mitzi offers.

The idea of a new swimsuit makes Mitzi wince a little.

"Um, I'm too skinny for a swimsuit, really. Besides, I'm not a great swimmer or anything. I'd rather sit inside with iced tea and the TV. And since I'm graduating this year, I'm going to take the first few days of the summer to just be a vegetable." she says.

"How are you going to tan without it? I mean, now that we're out here. I'll find you one that flatters your figure, don't worry!"

She pauses, then springs forward to give Mitzi a hug. "Thanks! I'll need the help."

Mitzi hugs her friend, smiling again despite herself. Sometimes, it was hard to be upset about anything around Pippi, and that was before she kicked in with the Feel Good Vibes.

"That'll do, Pip. That'll do." she says.
