A Night of Outcasts

Paulo Seganti knocks on the door to the loft above the Popular Outcast nightclub, waiting for his master to bid him to enter. There are several soft moans of pleasure, which signals Paulo to wait before entering. When he hears the sound of a muffled scream, followed by silence, Paulo straightens his suit coat before the door opens almost of its own accord.

Julian Gallio’s eyes glow momentarily as the young woman crumbles to ashes beneath him, littering the floor of the loft. He eyes the mess and sighs in disapproval. Feeding never manages to be clean. Julian dusts off his hands, then moves to the closet to change his slacks and shirt, choosing a light grey suit and dresses as Paulo looks on.

“Mister Howard… ‘Now I Can Has Machinegun’ will take the stage in just a few minutes.” Paulo said. “You said you wanted to be informed when they did.”

“I did, Paulo. Thank you. By the way, did you manage to get the invitations to Mister Summers, Mister Reed and Mister Reynolds?” Julian asked.

“I couldn’t get directly to Mister Summers, sir. The Embassy was a bit crowded and security was tight. I had to settle for handing them off to a secretary who would see that they were delivered. But the others were sent without issue.” Paulo said nervously.

Julian closed his eyes for a moment, thinking. When they opened again, they were clear and brown, no trace of the illumination from his feeding present. He took a deep breath, remembered that Paulo would have done his best to fulfill his duty, and let it out.

“Very well, Paulo. Either Andrew will come to me, or he won’t. I cannot control that outcome. You do good work for me, old friend.” Julian says as he finishes dressing. His grey lies easily over his black shirt and Paulo comes over to straighten it for him before stepping back and nodding approvingly.

“You look good, Mister Howard. Some of the ones you've sought are already here, or in line; we’ve been watching for them. Do you think they will be amenable to your idea?” Paulo asks.

“I do. They want fame, acceptance, money, power, and a place to belong. The world wants mutants it can trust, that it can 'control'. I’m in a position to give everyone what they want, and in the end, I get what I want.” Julian says, moving past Paulo to the door.

“Clean that up, will you? I might be in the mood for a snack when this is all over and I don’t like a messy house.” he finishes as he heads out the door and down the back stairs to the stage.

DJ paces the stage like a caged animal, all nerves and intensity. He always gets this way before a show. The sound check went perfectly - this place has better acoustics than anywhere else they've played, and the offer was too good to turn down, even if half the bands in the city have to have tried out.

He checks on Pauline, to make sure she's ready, then hits the first chords of 'Sects and Violence'. Its not their best known song, but they like to open with it - three minutes, fifty-six seconds, if no one improvises, of sheer energy and intensity.

Pauline sings at the top of her lungs and bounces on her heels. This may not be their usual venue, she's already forgotten that by the time they start, and the performance is radiantly passionate from the little blue girl.

Lisa heard this event was going to be a veritable melting pot of mutants and otherwise altered individuals, so she wouldn't miss it for anything. She'd already gotten an initial hit off a male speedster and a follow-up from a girl who could climb walls. She was devouring her third energy bar of the hour to replace some of the calories from the former, and looking around for whatever else the evening might offer.

She was practically floating on the euphoria kick her powers gave her with each use. The look in her eyes as she surveyed the crowd was like something that lurks in the tall grass, only given away by a slight flick of it's tail when something young and tender might amble by.

Wearing dark sunglasses and a baseball cap Harry entered the club hoping that he wasn’t recognized the disguise wasn’t much and a close look would easily reveal who he was but it was better than nothing. Having so quickly gained celebrity status Harry still wasn’t used to it and wasn’t sure he ever would. The club was blooming with a large crowd and loud music. Harry was uncomfortable being in crowds so the club scene was not his normal scene, but the current band was very good which did help make him feel better.

The reason why Harry was here was because of a letter he had recently gotten from a Mr. Julian Gallio. The letter had asked for him to attend the club today at roughly this time but did not explain anything more than that. Normally he would have just ignored the letter but something about it had peeked his curiosity and Harry was determined to find out what his host wanted him from him.

Julian comes down the stairs into the club proper and surveys the place. N.I.C.H Machinegun has this place packed to the nines, which is what Julian likes to see. The energy from the crowd is nearly palpable as he watches DJ, Pauline and the others do what they do best.

They're a damn good investment. he says to himself.

Julian scans the crowd, hoping that Andrew decided to come. When he doesn't see him, he makes his way over to the bar (serving non-alcoholic drinks to the minors), passing the blond woman and offering her a smile before settling his eyes on the guy in the black sunglasses and the baseball cap.

He walks near the young man and stands next to him, smiling to himself a bit.

"You know...I think you and I stand out the most in this whole place." he says, indicating his own finely pressed suit, and Harry's ball-cap and shades.

Harry had ordered a ginger ale at the bar when he was approached by Julian.

“If I had to guess you would be Julian Gallio,” says Harry to the man in the finely pressed suit as he takes off the hat and sunglasses.

“I suppose your right I do stand out but at least I was able to get here and to the bar without being hassled to much,” says Harry with a sigh, fame really did not suit him much but what is done is done and that can’t be changed now.

“So I am very curious as to why you asked me to meet you here,” asked Harry.

"Well, let's dispense with the guessing games." Julian says, offering a hand. "Call me Julian Howard around others. That's the name I go by." he says.

"May I ask why you're hiding? People know you. One would think you'd be using that to your advantage, taking it for all it's worth. You're not the only famous person I've invited here tonight, Mr. Reynolds.

And your certainly not the only mutant in the crowd." Julian says, nodding toward the corner, where Jason is standing. It had taken weeks of work, but the man was here, finally.

Of course, as he does so, he catches the eye of the blond woman and smiles at her again.

"I do have a reason for inviting you here tonight, Harry. I think I can help this new-found fame thing get a little easier for you." he says.

"Think on that a moment." he says, then turns to the bar tender. He points Jason out, and asks one of the guards invite Jason to join his conversation with Henry, if he desires.

Shaking Julian’s hand Harry says “It’s nice to meet you.”

Then breaking the grip Harry says, “Fame might be nice for some people but I’ve never been a fan of the spotlight and was more than happy to let others have it. I kind of like anonymity but I don’t think that much of an option anymore.”

Harry took a sip from his soda and looked around the club before continuing, “I’ve never had a problem with being a mutant or even hide it more just didn’t saying anything about it to people. One of the advantages of a subtle power I guess.”

Harry takes another sip to give himself some more time to think before saying, “Thanks for the offer in how to deal with my new found fame. I do have to ask what is it that you think you can do to help with that and what does it have to do with theses other people you have invited.”

Julian didn't blame Harry at all for not wanting to attract more attention to being a mutant than he already had. Some people enjoyed fame, others didn't.

"Look, this is normally the part where the guy in the suit tries to sell you his vision of the world and why you should be a part of it. I'm going to make this simple, though, Harry. You're a mutant, and you've accepted it. You're out and proud, even when you know what the backlash could be. That's inspiring, not only to me, but to others." Julian says.

"Now, I understand you're not big on fame, but you're in a position to help millions of people like you come to terms, not only with who they are, but their place in the world. You probably saw that Reverend Butler guy talking about how mutants need to register and identify themselves.

I don't believe that's necessary. People are scared now on both sides, but forced registration is only going to drive the divide deeper, especially if they're targeting a specific race of people. Why don't the Avengers have to register? Or the Fantastic Four?

What I'm proposing is...a little off the wall, and maybe dangerous. I'm proposing that a group of people stand up and show the world that forcing people to register isn't necessary. Both sides can find a common ground, if someone's willing to lead the way. You're known. So are DJ Whedon and Pauline Argosy. So is Jason Reed.

I think that if people stand up and show that mutants are trustworthy, and above all, proud of who they are...it might cause people to think about forcing everyone to register and starting a witch-hunt that's going to end poorly for everyone." Julian finishes.

"Of course, you can tell me I'm completely nuts right now, and I won't bother you further, too." he smiles.

Lisa was riding an absolute rush from playing around with some electrical powers, snatched via a little bit of grinding with a redheaded number on the dance floor. She couldn't let loose too much inside, of course, but she was quite pleased with being able to raise lightning between her palms.

Someone else had caught her eye though. Pale guy, not ghoulish, but just looks like he spends a little more time inside than others, relatively clean-cut... and working something. She couldn't hear what was being said over the din of the crowd, but the body language between him and someone he had cornered was a little more intensive than you'd expect for the usual nightclub chatter.

She slips a little closer, catching the tail end of an exchange, and throwing her own two bits in. She's fishing for responses, since mutant or not, she's a little bit intrigued.

"As far as life's taught me, it's usually the ones that are completely nuts that are the most interesting.." She gives the boys a relaxed but not quite playful smile and gaze.

Well, the name of the band was pretty funny. But nothing else about them was funny. Instead, they were quite good at what they did. If only they had a better attire. Jason watched and listened in a comfortable spot to the side of the crowd.

DJ is all energy, throwing everything he can into the performance. He wants to win this one, damnit. It could really make them right at this moment in their careers.

They only have so much time, and so many sets to show off. This is a battle of the bands, after all. So they finish the high energy 'Sects and Violence', and go into the punk rock powered protest of 'Of Rice and Yen'. Yeah, he's a punk. But he's an educated one, and studied enough to remember a time when at least a few of the punk rock songs out there were supposed to have some meaning.

Wanting to finish up really showing off Pauline's best though, he tones down the power chords, and goes into the finish of their three song set, filling the hall with soulful guitar wails accompanying Pauline's voice on their most recent alternative ballad 'Shadow Lovers (of Hiroshima)'

She's good at doing things The Right Way and not straining herself from sheer sloppiness, but Pauline by the time gets to the long last notes at the end of the set, she knows she's going to have to keep a rein on her talking for the rest of the night. That doesn't stop her from holding them just the right amount.
She's enjoying the energy of the crowd as much as she can without kicking it up a notching and exposing herself to god-knows-what-happens-but-probably-stripping by actually scanning the place.

When it's all done, she gives one of those short, simple bows her grandfather used to after faux conducting the stereo orchestra. No, the stylistic contrast doesn't bother her in the slightest, thank you.

She beams as she takes the mic again. "Thank you. We are Now I Can Has Machinegun!" She winks and whispers a staccato "Ho. Ho. Ho."

And that's a wrap. She doesn't just hope they did well. She knows it.

Julian looks at Lisa and gives her a smile.

"Well, they say there's a fine line between genius and insanity. I'll let history be the judge of that." he says, leading the two over to Jason near the edge of the room.

Meanwhile, Julian doesn't fail to notice how DJ and Pauline have taken control of the crowd. He raises a toast (such as it is with an non-alcoholic drink) to them during "Of Rice and Yen" and watches them work the crowd. They're his favorite to win the competition, but the crowd will decide that.

He turns back to Harry, Lisa and Jason. "Mister Reed, I'm glad you came. I'd like to be able to speak with you as well about my idea if you got time tonight.

I think it will benefit all of us."

Having Pauline singing is almost cheating sometimes. He can't believe they let her be a backup singer for so long with all that talent. Its like she thinks music. Of course, she's also hot. A thought which occurs often, gets her plenty of sidelong glances from him, and always the internal question of whether he's checking out his sister's ass or not. Damn.

He notes the toast, giving a nod back before his attention is back to making Pauline sound her best, while he helps provide some eyecandy for the punker chicks in the front row to go with the music. Now and then he glances towards their hosts table, noting the little conference, but no time for that quite yet.

Lisa smiles like a cheshire as her target pulls her along. There's something there as well, she just can't figure out what yet. She needs more info, and his permission, before she's willing to try to take a taste. She's also somewhat hesitant to give up the electrical powers until she can cut loose with them a bit more.

As he mentions something of an idea, she gives him a smoldering gaze and smiles more naturally. "I've got nothing but time."

She hesitates for a moment, her mind running over pseudonym versus real name cost/benefit analysis.

"Lisa. Just Lisa, for now." She tilts her head back and to the side slightly. "We'll see if the evening gets you the other half."

Harry looks over at the woman Julian is now talking to who introduced herself as Lisa who now seemed to have electricity flowing through her hands. Harry hadn’t said anything in a while as he was thinking about the conversation he had just had.

"Well, I want to get everyone together first, before we go over this idea. That way, anyone who's got questions can ask them for the benefit of the group." Julian says.

When Jason speaks up, Julian turns to him.

"Thank you, again, for joining us, Mr. Reed." he says. "If I can have the three of you come back to my office, we'll relax for a bit, get to know each other, and then I'll go over my idea with all of you.

I will preface it with this, however: Not only will others benefit, but each of you will, first and foremost." Julian says.
