Checking on the home team
Commander Fontaine, Deputy Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., made the rounds when the special ops team came back in. After their last disastrous outing, she wanted to make sure they were still in one cohesive piece. The reports had been favorable.

She hadn't met the newest member yet, though she knew the contents of his file. She'd been the one to have it sent to Sammy for consideration. Her little gun nut, and Walker and Dugan, could always use someone with the ability to build a better gun.

Sammy's report had been terse but informative. The others' a little more informative. Landon was next on her list.

Johnny and Elvis are classics. Hardly in the same category as Willie Nelson or those others." She put a hand under his elbow. "You can call me Jeeves and pretend I'm just the driver while you sit in the backseat and sleep or read or assemble a semi-automatic cannon.'

"Apologies, but I just can't find it in me to call you 'Jeeves'." Tech says, starting to chuckle before it tweaks his sore ribs and he winces in pain.

"You did that on purpose." he says, mock-annoyance in his tone.

"However, I think I shall find the real Fury on this trip. Besides, I didn't bring my tools, so the semi-automatic cannon idea just isn't viable this time around." he grins.

"Of course I did," she lied briskly, humor surfacing despite her effort to keep a straight face, "because it feels so good when I stop. I also stopped in Medical for a pain prescription so you'll have it if it all gets to be too much for you."

She waited for him to move, sparing a glance at one of the pilots waiting for them to board. If there was any comment on their slowness, it was wisely kept quiet.

"I left the real Fury having coffee with the deputy director to plan an overnight getaway. I'll be surprised if they actually get it."

Tech is silently grateful for Fury's thinking ahead. He'd foregone the pain medication because Jacob always told him that it was better to learn to deal with pain rather than shut it off with drugs. Drugs made you feel okay when they were in you, but the pain always came back worse.

About now, he could tell that he was going to need the meds.

Tech gets into the shuttle and sits down, waiting for Fury to sit with him.

"Ah, your father is friendly with the the Commanding Commander." Tech whispers, smiling as he looks at Sam. Suddenly, an odd look crosses his face.

He sees Fury's face, then Commander Fontaine's...then Fury's face...then Commander Fontaine's.

Tech blinks stupidly in realization.

"She's your mother! I knew she looked familiar!" he says, still whispering.

Sammy sat down next to him and gave him a surprised look. "It's not a secret. She's been my mother for a long time, and deputy director for about forty years."

"But when she came to talk to me about the mission, I knew there was something familiar about her. I just couldn't place what it was." he says.

"You favor her, in a good way." Tech says. "I see how life could be interesting, growing up in S.H.I.E.L.D." he says.

"I guess she wanted to make sure I hadn't killed you or sent you running for the CIA or FBI." Mom checking up on her was a bitter pill to swallow, but she held back on the irritation as best she could.

"Life was interesting," she agreed. "But there were a few things I could have done without. It's all a matter of perspective. Did the Commander have anything specific to say?"

"She and I discussed the mission and I asked her about other opportunities within the organization. I am also going to speak with her on Wednesday about furthering my education, since I've not been to college. I was supposed to be the first person in my family to go, and maybe I still can be." Tech says.

"Other than that, she knows that you did a great job leading us." Tech says.

"You still can, it's entirely possible. Alice and I are students, and Aleks does work for advanced degrees. The downtime can be boring without something outside of S.H.I.E.L.D."

She took a small vial of pills from her jacket pocket and handed them over. "I expect you to take one when you need it. Don't make me stop time, search you for them and shove one down your throat, okay?"

"Well, hopefully I can get enough of an education to make something of myself and make my Gran proud. I told her I was going to rebuild and refurbish our house back home. Our family's lived on that land for almost 200 years, and I want us to live there for 200 more." Tech says.

He takes the pills, raising his eyebrows. "In the interest of not having you stop time to do that, I'll take my pill as soon as I need it and not before. I don't want to become beholden to them." he says.

"That's all I ask. I understand not depending on pills, but I don't agree with suffering. You're going to hurt with all the moving around before the day is over. The doctor said they'd only take the edge off."

The shuttle doors closed and before long the shuttle was taking off. Sammy relaxed into the motion of the aircraft. "Two hundred years. That's quite a legacy. I'm impressed that your family's held onto the land for so long."

"Well, I won't say it hasn't been a struggle. My grandmother is a good woman, a proud woman, and she raised two boys into manhood the best she could after Grandpa passed away. That was part of why we got into The Business. Jake started doing jobs for the local kingpin, and before long, we had money to repair stuff at the house, with good material, and buy good clothes." Tech says.

"Gran never asked where the money came from because she didn't want us to lie to her, so we never volunteered the information. Still, she tries to do for herself as much as possible." Tech says.

Sammy nodded as she listened. She passed no judgment on how they supported their grandmother, only appreciated that they had. "Does she know about the deal with S.H.I.E.L.D. about your brother?"

"Yes, she does. She loves Jake, but she takes it personally that his choices led to where he is now. She was glad to hear about S.H.I.E.L.D. especially when I told her that I've seen Nick Fury.

Apparently, my grandfather served under him in Vietnam for a short time. Your dad likely won't remember it, but Grandpa did, and he said it changed his life." Tech says, settling into his chair to stare straight ahead.

"She also doesn't think I should be working to get Jake released, but I'm...aware of things that she's not." Tech says.

"I'd be surprised what Dad remembers. He can tell stories like they happened to him yesterday."

Sammy noticed his posture and lightly placed her hand on his. The sound of the engine disappeared to leave an odd silence behind.

"Does flying bother you?"

The touch of her hand is a different sensation, and Tech is grateful for the touch, even if it's not for the reason she thinks it is.

"No, flying doesn't bother me. I was just thinking. I'm working to get my brother out of jail for more than just his own good, Fury." Tech says, still staring ahead.

"Jacob's fiancee is two months pregnant, and she's alone. I...was thinking of going to check on her after I saw Jake, which is why your coming along surprised me." he says.

"She can't see him because of the distance and restrictions. I'm only allowed to see him because of my S.H.I.E.L.D access. He asked me to look in on her when he was convicted." he says.

"It's really the only thing I can do for him short of a magic wand to get him out." he smiles, though a bit sadly, looking at Fury now.

There was a lot to admire about Tech aside from his talent for weaponry. She hadn't made up her mind about his character yet, but he was gaining ground on that one by the second.

"Then you'll check on her. I'm just the driver." She squeezed his hand and released it. The normal sounds returned, the people around them returning to life.

"Dare I ask if you arranged for a car at the directorate?"

Tech hadn't noticed the sound was gone until it came back. When it did, he smiled at Fury.

"Thank you. You just helped me more than you'll ever know." he says.

"Well, I did arrange for a car...and then I realized that said car will likely be lo-jacked, especially if you're in it." Tech tells her.

She smiled. "That's what I'm here for, Tech."

"I have been lo-jacked since birth. It's one of the perks of being a Person of Interest. We'll see what's available when we get there. One of these days I'll get my hands on a hovercar."

"Oh, that must be fun when you go out, knowing that S.H.I.E.L.D. could show up at any time to interrogate a date, a friend, a classmate, a lunch buddy." Tech chuckles.

"I know a little of what that's like myself. I had guards from the time I was thirteen until last year. Not that I ever went out, but it was a pain when I did, especially at school." Tech says.

"What was it like growing up with Director Fury? I mean, you must have been able to meet so many important and influential people. Someday, I hope to have Reed Richards or Tony Stark take a look at my designs. Or even Hank Pym. If any of those guys can see what I do and like it, I'll allow that I might be as talented as some people say." Tech says.

"You mean, was I taken to political and social functions and told to behave myself? All the time. I've been to some amazing place and met amazing people." She laughed softly. "I didn't date much because no guy wanted to face Nick Fury on the other side of the door. Most of them had grandfathers and great grandfathers who could tell war stories about him."

"Getting one or all of them to look at your designs isn't as hard as you think. I was an Avenger for the last three years before I took this position. I know all their kids and had play dates with most of them growing up."

"Facing Nick Fury is a daunting prospect any day of the week, much more so when the reason in question is a date with his daughter. I'm certain that some brave soul has, in the past, weathered the storm to distinguish himself?" Tech asks.

"Wow. I guess it's true that S.H.I.E.L.D. does know everyone and their mother." Tech jokes.

"S.H.I.E.L.D. has been partnered with and against most of the hero teams out there. Dad's old enough to have known many of them from the beginnings of their careers. His floating poker game includes Captain America, Reed Richards and Ben Grimm, and Dr. Henry McCoy. Our special ops team will be working with second generation heroes as well on occasion. Dad made sure I was given the chance to know them so they'll know me when I take over S.H.I.E.L.D."

"Your dad...plays poker with Captain America? And Reed Richards?" Tech asks, as if he's unable to believe what he's hearing. He doesn't even notice that she evaded his first question.

"I would serve potato chips if it meant being a fly on the wall at one of those games. The things they must talk about." he says, wondering if such interesting guys worked out complex plans to save the world as easily as he put together weapons.

Of course, it might break Tech's mind to realize that they talk about beer, sports and women as well.

"Cap is my godfather. You've never heard boring until that man lectures you on proper behavior at five am on a Saturday morning while you're training. I'd feel sorry for his kid if I hadn't grown up with him."

Tech would indeed be surprised to hear what they actually talked about and who showed up from time to time.

"Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk are the only two women who've been at the poker table more than once, I think."
