Checking on the home team
Commander Fontaine, Deputy Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., made the rounds when the special ops team came back in. After their last disastrous outing, she wanted to make sure they were still in one cohesive piece. The reports had been favorable.

She hadn't met the newest member yet, though she knew the contents of his file. She'd been the one to have it sent to Sammy for consideration. Her little gun nut, and Walker and Dugan, could always use someone with the ability to build a better gun.

Sammy's report had been terse but informative. The others' a little more informative. Landon was next on her list.

"Oh, that must be fun when you go out, knowing that S.H.I.E.L.D. could show up at any time to interrogate a date, a friend, a classmate, a lunch buddy." Tech chuckles.

"I know a little of what that's like myself. I had guards from the time I was thirteen until last year. Not that I ever went out, but it was a pain when I did, especially at school." Tech says.

"What was it like growing up with Director Fury? I mean, you must have been able to meet so many important and influential people. Someday, I hope to have Reed Richards or Tony Stark take a look at my designs. Or even Hank Pym. If any of those guys can see what I do and like it, I'll allow that I might be as talented as some people say." Tech says.

"You mean, was I taken to political and social functions and told to behave myself? All the time. I've been to some amazing place and met amazing people." She laughed softly. "I didn't date much because no guy wanted to face Nick Fury on the other side of the door. Most of them had grandfathers and great grandfathers who could tell war stories about him."

"Getting one or all of them to look at your designs isn't as hard as you think. I was an Avenger for the last three years before I took this position. I know all their kids and had play dates with most of them growing up."

"S.H.I.E.L.D. has been partnered with and against most of the hero teams out there. Dad's old enough to have known many of them from the beginnings of their careers. His floating poker game includes Captain America, Reed Richards and Ben Grimm, and Dr. Henry McCoy. Our special ops team will be working with second generation heroes as well on occasion. Dad made sure I was given the chance to know them so they'll know me when I take over S.H.I.E.L.D."

"Your dad...plays poker with Captain America? And Reed Richards?" Tech asks, as if he's unable to believe what he's hearing. He doesn't even notice that she evaded his first question.

"I would serve potato chips if it meant being a fly on the wall at one of those games. The things they must talk about." he says, wondering if such interesting guys worked out complex plans to save the world as easily as he put together weapons.

Of course, it might break Tech's mind to realize that they talk about beer, sports and women as well.

Tech would indeed be surprised to hear what they actually talked about and who showed up from time to time.

"Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk are the only two women who've been at the poker table more than once, I think."

Tech just blinks.

"Someday, I shall be important enough to sit at this poker table amongst such august company. I may lose all of my money, but I will be rich in the knowledge that I rock enough to sit a poker table with Nick Fury and other most-illustrious persons!" Tech thinks.

"We should do a team poker night. It would be a fun teamwork exercise or something." Tech says.

Tech gets up slowly, and the sudden pain at moving again makes him decide to take the pill now. He swallows the pill, then gets up slowly to exit the shuttle.

"No, nothing. I've never really seen New York, though I keep getting told I should. Someday, I'll have to take a day and come enjoy the Big Apple. Maybe even be one of those annoying tourists." Tech says.

"Oh, she lives in Bon Temps, Louisiana. We've got a huge plot of land on which Gran's house resides. Down the road a few miles, but on the same land, is the house where my parents lived before they...left." Tech says simply.

"That's where Jake and Jessica lived, and where Jessica lives now. My parents house is the newer one, but Gran is just as protective of it as her own house. Her son is my father." Tech says grimly.

"My father abandoned my brother and me after our mother died." he says, for clarification.

That's about a fifteen hundred mile round trip. I would've packed an overnight bag if I known. With extra clips, too. I think we're going to need a flight out to Leavenworth." "I wouldn't intrude on your family time because I invited myself along. I'll get a hotel room." She took out her cell phone to call the deputy director's office and ask Valentina's assistant to check the flights for an accommodation that would allow her to board with her gun. She had the carry permit as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and a carry concealed permit on a needs basis for all UN countries, but it was better to advise an airline ahead of time that she was legal for it.

The airlines really didn't like it when you held them up waiting for a faxed confirmation from Nick Fury's office. Neither did Nick Fury's office.

"I'll take you were you want to go and then let you visit. It's really no problem."

	"Actually, it would be good if you stayed. If you drop by and Gran finds out I didn't ask you to stay, I may as well find a room at the hotel myself. Gran wrote the book on 'Southern Hospitality'."
